Ok, I'm a little confused now after reading all of this! The Silas DeMoss that I have found was married to 2 different women and was born about 40 years earlier! So who has the correct family tree to connect to on this to get the correct information? I'm related on the Shelton side of the family.
Thanks
Judy
islanderjudy@yahoo.com

Sale of Property, William Demoss, Jennings County, Indiana

I am the Jennings County Local History & Genealogy Librarian and am going through some of our old records. In an old Probabe Record book of our Court of Common Pleas is a document dated April 14,1855. Joseph Draper administrator of the Estate of William Demoss is petitioning for the conveyance of Real Estate from the Estate. It lists the following heirs of William Demoss - Wilson age 18, Elizabeth age 15, Charles age 12, Martin age 9, Maria/Mary age 7, Martha age 4 and the Widow Phebe. The entire record is four pages in the book, but I thought I would post this just in case someone is researching this family. William Demoss may have died quite a while before this was done as these Estates take a long time to settle and sale of Real Estate is not one of the first things usually done.

Sheila Kell

George Washington Demoss & wives M E Price/ (Mrs) P C Fowler

the marriage records for Hopkins County KY (as transcribed on Family Search) list George Washington Demoss (son of John Demoss/Sarah Barker) as marrying first Mary Elizabeth Price on 24 Nov 1847 in Hopkins County. Mary Elizabeth died in October 1880, and on 17 Sep 1883, GW marries a Mrs. P. C. Fowler in Hopkins County (who then dies before the 1900 census).

I hadn't previously been able to fine a "real" name for this Mrs. P C Fowler, and today started doing a bit of detailed looking. In the 1880 census, there is an Eli C Fowler (age 600 with wife Pheby C (age 47). The Kentucky marriage records indicate that Pheby C and Eli C were married on 19 Feb 1878 in Hopkins County, and that her name at the time of that marriage was Phebe Catherine Hawkins. Looked in the 1870 census, and there is a Catherine of the correct age married to a Randolph Hawkins. The Kentucky marriage records list a marriage between Randolph Hawkins and Catherine T Samuel on 22 May 1851 in Franklin County, Kentucky.

I can't prove this further than circumstantial evidence at this point, though.

Demoss (age 9 in 1870)

Both are still living with Greenup Barker and wife in 1880, where their relationship to Greenup and Elizabeth is listed as Grand-daughter.

Although the various transcribed marriage records available online for Campbell County KY list a marriage in 1858 for Thomas Demoss to a Maria Barker, I suspect that either this is a transcription error, and "Maria" should really be "Julia" (a documented daughter of Greenup and Elizabeth) or that Maria was a Maria Ann.

Hope this helps.

I have a Rachel Demoss married to John Wesley Gilbert in 1877 in Wayne, OH. She died in 1856 giving birth to my ggrandfather, Albert DeMoss Gilbert. The 1860 census of 1860 in Canaan, Wayne, OH show him living with his grandparents Joshua and Abigail Morgan. Any of this sound familiar?

Peter DeMoss and Mary Scogin

I am looking for the parents of my gr gr grandfather. His name is Lewis DeMoss, born Fleming, Ky in 1812. I cant find parents or siblings for him. I have reason to believe we are connected to the DeMoss Springs, OR group, but havent found how. I keep going back to Peter's first wife, Mary Scogin. I believe they might have been married in 1810 and had my ancestor in 1812 when she was only 15. She died at the age of 29 (I found a photo of her tombstone) and it lists her as Mary DeMoss. Peter married Elizabeth Stewart the next year. I can find no record of children of Peter and Mary. Does anyone know anything that might help? Sharon Williams

What, exactly, are you looking for?
His daughter, Dora Mae DeMoss said that Peter DeMoss
(Virginia, 1788) was his father, but we have been unable
to prove it.
Ok - I guess I need some updating too! I have Samuel Everett DeMoss' parents as Russell DeMoss and Ola Belle Paugh. Let me ask this: would it be possible to have you list what you have from the oldest ancestor down to u? I have much information and just need to work out where mistakes are. Do you descend from William DeMoss and Rachel Winchel?

I have been working to clear up errors in my research. I am tracking all DeMoss lines (I have done this from the start and am a little roadblocked on my direct line at the moment). I was trying to clear up some obvious problems and was trying to work out some information on Cyrus Edgar DeMoss which brings me to you. (long story)

I would sincerely appreciate it if we could compare notes on this line.

Regards

Hi Roxanne;

OK, here goes my nutshell summary of where we intersect - tell me if you have any additions or corrections and let me know what you may need upline, and I can fill some detail if you need it:

I have Israel Sellers (183? - aft 1900) who married Nancy E DeMoss. I don't have good dates or places on either of them, but do have their marriage date - 25 Jul 1861 in Pendleton Co. I have seen that paper, so mark that one confirmed. Israel later married Mary Carter DeMoss, (b abt 1846) married 31 Dec 1868 in Campbell Co, KY. Israel married a third time to Melvina Orcutt (1842-1923) on 16 Jun 1887 in Campbell Co KY. Again, I have seen all the marriage bonds.

I also have Israel's brother Foster (1837-1920)who married Sarah Emily DeMoss(Abt 1838-1908) on 1 feb 1865 in Campbell Co KY.

And I have their Lydia M Sellers(1828-1905) who married John Fletcher DeMoss (1835-1923) I guess the two families liked the looks of one another! John Fletcher was married 2 other times, and Lydia one other marriage. I have a few details on those.

I have as parents of Lydia, Foster and Israel:
Phillip Sellars (spelled that way) and Kezziah Green. I thought it was interesting that Lydia's first marriage was also a Green. I have siblings for Lydia, Foster and Israel:
Nancy, Andrew Jackson and Martha Sellers.

I only have firm dates on Andrew Jackson Sellers. I could use dates and places on the rest. I also need Nancy DeMoss Sellers dates and places (except marriage), and Mary Carter Sellers dates and places (except marriage), and a birthdate for Sarah Emily DeMoss Sellers.

Ok, that's my list - what info can I give you - I have much more on the DeMoss line.

Does anyone know how I can obtain cemetery records & marriage records in Knox County, Indiana? I live in Texas so it would be hard for me to travel to Knox County in just a day or so
