I also have an old rifle with the name Lt. Denis on it. Does anyone know who made this and when. I have read the other posts but no one seems to know. I am really curious about this rifle and would appreciate any help or suggestions where I could find more info.

Thanks

Hi! I just logged on to leave the same query. I have found other Denis family in the same area as Francis but have not been able to make any connection. I have indication from the census that his parents were both from South Carolina. My interest is Robert Bailey Denis. Which child is your line? I will be still looking so I will be happy to share if I find anything. Good luck in your search.

There are many "DENIS" in the Green Bay WI area. My great grandfather was Leopold Cianee Denis. He was apparently born in Belgium, but he was found in a church tower and was raised by a woman whose name was DENIS, so he also took that name.

It involves the Maceo brothers who fought in a major war in Cuba, one brother fled to Jamaica and subsequently Bronx NY. The name was changed to McClean and eventually changed back to Maceo. The cousin who is the direct grandson is currently living in Florida.

I have a Mauser 71 Jager rifle inscribed to Lt. Denis too. I've just been doing some research on it and it appears to have been manufactured in 1880 or 1882 (both dates on the rear of the receiver). The inscription reads: L, F, & P on top with Lt. Denis underneath. This was my grandfather's until a few years ago. There are a number of "I under crown" proof marks on various parts of the receiver. I'm very interested to know who Lt. Denis was.
The serial numbers on the action are all 80026.
Sorry I can't so much but ask more questions but maybe this rings a bell for someone.

I have a rifle with the name Lt. Denis on it as well but stamped 87 1883 on the right side of the receiver. It's also stamped J. G. M/71 on the left flat of the receiver. I've not yet identified the high crowned proof marks to figure out where it was manufactured or who for. It's single shot, and it seems a smaller bore size than the standard 10 or 11mm. I was wondering if maybe it was a special model manufactured for a specific customer because some of the markings are inconsistent with the standard Mod. 71 Mauser. But since it seems there are similarly marked guns out there but with different years on them I'm not sure. The serial number is 4366 and it matches on all the parts. So if anyone has more info to contribute it would be of great help.

I am looking for information on James Allen Denis, born July 4, 1888; and died in January of 1951. He was my maternal grandfather. My grandmother Eula Mae Ridings was his second wife. I would like information on where he was born, and who his parents were. I think he may have been from Tennessee.

I am not related, but I was just browsing in an antique store in Kalamazoo MI and saw a photo of a lot of folks, and a sign that said Denis Reunion, Memorial Park, 1923. It is about 10 inches wide and 4 inches tall, just guessing. I think the price was $20. I think this likely came from either Michigan or Indiana. I can pass along the store name and phone number if anyone is interested.

Hi Jill,
Unfortunately I can't be much help to you as I have not yet started researching the French side of my family. However, I do have a connection to a LeTellier family from Caen. All that I know of them is that this surname is the surname of one of my great great grandparents. The LeTellier family of Caen married into the Foucard family - my great grandfather Emile Paul Arthur Foucard migrated to London some time after the 1840s where he and his brother Charles Auguste Arthur Foucard established a few businesses - one being Charles Foucard Goldrei and Son. If you do an inter-net search you will find details about this company. My cousin in Sweden informs me that the Foucard Estate in Caen - which was quite large - was completely destroyed by the Nazi's during the second world war. It was used as some kind of Nazi base and I suspect a lot of family items were looted, so much of the family history was lost at this time. I wish I could be of greater assistance, but until I start researching this side of my family - at least in France - I can't offer more than this.

Cheers,

Don Cameron.

I'am not searching for Denis in my tree, but I do have an old rifle with the name Lt. Denis engraved on it. I don't know much about rifles but I do know it's a single shot bolt action, Mauser. It has 1881 on it but I don't know if thats the yr. I was told that it could be 1920. So if anyone has a Lt. Denis that was in the service, maybe we can find the history. Thank you! Claudia

Michael Joseph Denis

I'm looking for any information on my grandfather, Michael Joseph Denis. The information that I know is that he married my grandmother, Margarite DeLeo, had two sons, Raymond Louis Denis and Michael Felix Denis. They lived in NJ (New Brunswick) and NYC. I know he was a sailor in the US Navy and served in Rhode Island ? (dishonorable discharge, I think) and he died in 1980 in NYC. I understand he was of Hungarian decent, but I have no idea when they came to the US and from where. I believe his mother's name was Teresa but I don't know a last name. My grandfather had a half-brother Joseph Balazy and a sister, Teresa (Denis?). I would really like to just fill in some of my family tree and just have hit one dead end after another. I can't find birth info, marriage info, ggparents names or dates, ect. ANY help would be greatly appreciated
