My grandfather (died in Florida in 1958) is Wlllis Orlando Derry. Most of his life he worked for the railroad as a station agent in Michigan. His wife (my grandmother) is Maude Sutphin. They had seven children, all of whom are now deceased. Grandfather had one brother I believe whose name may have been Mark.

Here is the information I have on the family of IVAN DERRY:

(1) Peter Derry (1740-1831) m. Catherine Feldman
(2) Jacob Derry (1764-1831) m. Catherine UNKNOWN
(3) William John Derry (1788-?) m. Barbara Rapp
(4) Jacob Henry Derry, Sr. (1812-1883) m. "Sally" Badgett
(5) Jacob Henry Derry, Jr. (1853-1931) m. Cyrena Cook
(6) Burlin William Derry (1876-1954) m. Ella May Barnhart
(7) Ivan Dale Derry, Sr. (1903-1988) m. Inna Viola Campbell
(8) Ivan Derry, Jr. (?) m. Linda Olroyd

I hope this is helpful. The family originally lived in Loudoun County, Virginia and then slowly began to move out West beginning with William John to Ohio. The rest settled Illinois.

Joan Brown Derry
MDMama2841@aol.com
I'm looking for Josephus J. Derry, "Joseph", b 1857, Mercer Co., MO. He was the oldest child born to Abraham W. Derry & Emily Isabelle Hodges. According to census records in 1860 he was in Mercer Co., MO; in 1870, in St. Clair Co., MO & Woodson Co., KS; and in 1875 in Perry Twp., Woodson Co., KS with his family. I've not found any trace of him after 1875. For the 1880 census, the rest of the family was in Dallas Co., MO.

Thanks!
Judy Derry Mahoney

Most likely this was Harold W. Derry. For the 1910 census Harold has a printer living with his father, John R. Derry, who was a newspaper editor in nearby Greene Co., MO.

The lineage would be John R. Derry - Oliver Hamilton Derry - John R. Derry - John Derry (d 1862 Brown Co., OH) & Anna Rardin. This line tracks back to 1791 Allegheny Co., PA

To Carter A. Dary:

I just now found your posting from 2004. I am hoping that you are still receiving messages through this site.

I was able to find the complete line that you are referring to and am delighted -- I have been stuck for years on the question of what happened to PHILIP DERRY (Dary) and his children after the 1850 ILL Census in Stephenson County. It never occurred to me that they crossed over into Wisconsin. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

If you receive this message -- please contact me at my home e-mail address below and hopefully I can shed some more light onto the earlier generations.

Joan Brown Derry
MDMama2841@aol.com

Hello, cousin! For the sake of other DERRY researchers, I will report the following BASIC info that your Ellen Bridget DERRY, (b abt 1835 in Ireland; d abt 1912), married Benjamin Cornell (himself b 19 Mar 1822 in Caledonia, Livingston, NY and died 30 Apr 1899 in Saginaw MI). They had at least 9 daughters! - all born, I think, in Lewiston, NY.

Ellen Bridget had siblings:
JANE, b abt 1829, Co. Derry, Ireland, and married Michael Joseph McANDREW of Crossmolina, Co. Mayo, Ireland and raised their family in coal-mining Girardville, PA.
THOMAS Derry, b abt 1830 in Londonderry, Derry, Ireland and married Mary Elizabeth GAREY (b abt 1837 in Marine City, MI)
MARIAH (b Jan 1834 in Derry, Ireland), married Mark Clair. Mariah died aft 1920 in Iowa City, Jefferson, Iowa.

We'd love to meet other DERRY descendants from this branch, who came into USA through Canada in the early 1840s. Regards, Mary W.

Wayne,

You may gain more from corresponding with my uncles than myself. They are also the grandsons of Francis Marion Derry and sons of Frank Derry, your mother's brother. If you would care to e-mail me your contact information, I would be happy to send it on to them. Or you can just e-mail me your e-mail address. Both of the uncles are online.
Frank's ex-wife, my grandma, is also still living and her memories would be fun for you to hear as well, but she does not do much with the computer, so you would have to correspond on paper.
You can e-mail me at amandabreitbach@yahoo.com.

Dian,

Frank Derry was my great grandfather. He was Chet's brother, and they and a third brother, Virgil, were all involved in the smokejumping program.
Frank died in 1968 in Kalispell, Montana, so I never met him. His son, also named Frank Derry, was my maternal grandfather. His widow, my grandmother, is still living in Libby, Montana. Frank Derry Sr. also had a daughter, I believe named Francis.
We attended a smokejumpers reunion in Missoula in the late 1990s and I met Virgil's widow, Jeanne, at that time. Virgil died in 1995 in Sun Cty, Ariz. I'm not sure if Jeanne is still living, but they had several children as well.
I believe Bob Derry is another brother of the first Frank and your dad, Chet. Last I knew, Bob and his wife Colleen lived in Wenatchee, Washington.
If you are interested in more information, I would be happy to give your contact information to my grandma. She was still in touch with Bob and Jeanne a few years ago and would know where their children are also.
For smokejumper history, try http://www.smokejumpers.com/history.

Amanda Breitbach Ragsdale
My great grandfather, Frank Derry, owned the Derry Parachute Company in Englewood, Calif. He and his two brothers, Virgil and Chet, were all parachutists. All three brothers later became involved in the first smokejumping program in Montana, with Frank serving as program supervisor.
For more information about that history, check the smokejumpers website at: http://www.smokejumpers.com/history/the_winthrop_experiments....

Later in life, Frank owned a marina on Flathead Lake near Bigfork, Mont. He died in 1968.

Chet, Frank, and Virgil had a younger brother, Norman. I am one of Norman's grandkids and I spent a summer at Virgil's place in Texas back in 1983.

Thanks for the info you sent me. I thought that my Grandmother Ellen Cumberle(i)dge might have been born out of wedlock since her birth certificate shows her being born after bans. Know know why. Would still like to reseach both these two families more since they were actually Ellens parents.

Hi,

DERRY was Mary Ann's former married name. Her maiden name was SMITH and she was born in Birmingham in 1853 to Charles and Eliza SMITH.

Mary Ann married John 'Amos' DERRY in 1870 and they had 4 children, but she left Amos c.1878 and ran away to Yorkshire with William CUMBERLIDGE - Mary Ann and William married bigamously in 1885. Divorce was out of the reach of most ordinary folks in the 19th century and Amos DERRY lived until 1940.

Regards
Sue Lote nee DERRY

DERRY Parachute

Hi,

First of all, I'm not a family member, but I have some information you may find valuable. I know that family history is difficult to trace after even 20 years, or so. I was somewhat lucky, in that my family history, on my mother's side, was traced back to the 14th century by a family in Europe. So it came to me free of charge.
..........................................................
I was just reminiscing, and happened to remember a professor for Basic Aeronautical Engineering I had at the Northrop Institute of Technology in 1965.
..........................................................
My instructor was Paul Derry. I can't swear to his first name, as I always thought of him as Mr. Derry. He and his father had a business in Inglewood, California on Isis Avenue called Derry Parachute, so "madusa" is correct about the spelling of the town, which is close to LAX (Los Angeles International Airport). You might be able to verify Mr. Derry's first name through the University's records. I haven't checked recently to see if the University still exists, but it was bought by Rice Aviation in Texas, and became Rice/Northrop Institute of Technology.
...........................................................
There also might be a connection to Lancaster, PA, where I am from. I happened to be talking to the Marine Corp Recruiter in Lancaster in the early 1960's, and mentioned Mr. Derry, since Mr. Derry happened to tell the students one day that he knew the Marine Corp Recruiter in Lancaster. When I asked the Recuiter if he happened to know Mr. Derry he replied in the affirmative. The Recruiter's name was Peter Paul Coconus (I can't swear to the spelling, so it is typed phonetically.)
