The Desmond family from Connecticut, before that Tennessee, irish (before the potato famine).

Looking for information on the Tennessee Desmond family. Through a marriage record, I found out that my Desmond family from Connecticut goes back to Charles A. Desmond (father of Ralph Oviatt Desmond, my great-great-grandpa) born in Murfreesboro, Tennessee in 1837 (I think this was before the potato famine in Ireland). In the record it list his parents Samuel P. Desmond and Margaret. In his census record for the year 1880, it says his father (Samuel P. Desmond) was born in Tennessee and his mother (Margaret) was born in New York. That's all the information I have.

Are you still searching for Patrick McCarthy and Johanna Desmond? May I ask how you are related? Look forward to hearing from you.
Jill Bolton

He also has a brother John (my gt grandfather) who I have located

My last trace for Jeremiah Desmond is on the 1881 census when he is an inmate aged 14 at the St Nicholas Industrial School in West Ham. I can't find death certs either

His brother John turns up on the 1891 and later census returns

This family originate in Ireland and I wonder if they returned to Ireland after falling on hard times or something else that I havent considered.
Well- I just started searching about him last night so I am on the first bits of looking. I do believe there is a picture of him - was in the civil war etc. But, as you say, very hard to tell that it is the M.J. Desmond of the family I am searching for. I do believe I have the right one, as he is connected on other people's trees on Ancestry.com that I saw. It is difficult to piece together. I think he had 12 children, five of which did not live past the scarlet fever rage of that time. The descendants of one of the sons, that is, William Richard Desmond, is the father of my husband's grandmother. Since everyone is deseased, it is so difficult! But thank goodness for these sites and connections. Would you mind letting me know what you do find? I will do the same. You are selcome to check on ancestry- my info for this is under the Barnes family tree.
ELizabeth

Hi Ann,

Here's the thing, my ggrandmother was Nora Earl(s)(e) from
Galway, specifically Claddagh. When I first sarted geanology 20 years ago, I wrote to the Galway Historical Society. The only family they had the father name was not legible. It was either Thos. Jno or Leo. the mother was Margaret O'Donnell. There was one son Simon, and Nora (Honor, Honoria) married 3 times.
Huband 1 was Curran, Thomas in NY (we think)
Husband 2 was Lee, no one knows his first name, but Jack O'Donnel (in his 80's when we spoke when my dad was still alive, thought it was John), we know he came from the Aran Isles (not which one). Husband 3 (my ggrandfather) was Bartholomew Gallery, born in Scotland of Irish parents. He had been previously married to a Bridget (or Ellen or Mary) Otis. When I found him enumerated with Bridget Otis (mother in law) in 1900 census his wife was already gone but two children remained: Bartholomew Jr and Ellen. They were in Hudson City NJ. Bridget was marrid to Lawerence Otis and in 1880, they had 3 daughters (thus the confusion of which one he'd married). Anyway, both children were born in NJ, but they could find no record of birth for either.

So, it's a possibility that Nora or her father are related to your line, however, this my most confusing line with very little verifiable sources. I have the cemetery and death dates for Nora and Bartholomew, but that's pretty much it. Nora is the woman on the right in the attached photo. Hope this helps.

Julia Maude Desmond (Snodgrass, Hodge O'Neil) ~1878-1940

I am looking for the parents of Julia Maude Desmond and a marriage date a place. Her granddaughter provided the maiden name. Julia was born 23 Aug 1878 in Boston, according to her obituary. The Canadian census of 1901 lists her birth date as 23 Aug 1876. The 1910 US census lists her as 34. The 1920 census has her as 43 year old. And in the 1930 census she was 52.

She married John DeWitt Snodgrass of LaGrande, OR, some time before they were counted in the 1901 census of Canada in Yale/Cariboo, BC, without children. John died in BC in 1907. She is listed as Julia Snodgrass.

For the 1910 US census she and a son, John Francis Snodgrass, were in LaGrande, OR. Julia Snodgrass is a widowed nurse, born in Massachusetts. Her parents were born in Ireland and Massachusetts.

In 1918 she married David Hodge in Bend, OR. He died in 1919. For the 1920 she, listed as Maude Hodge, and son John were still in Bend. She was born in Massachusetts, her father was born in Scotland and spoke Irish; her mother was born in Ireland and spoke Irish. On the other hand, her son's mother was born in Scotland and spoke English, so there is clearly some confusion here.

Some time between 192s and 1930 she married George O'Neil, and appears in the 1930 as Julia M. O'Neil in Bend. She was born in Massachusetts, her father in Irish Free State, and her mother in Massachusetts.

She dies 20 Mar 1940 in Bend and is buried in Pilot Butte Cemetery there, listed as Julia Maude O'Neil.

After Anna died, William wouldn't take care of my grandma cuz he thought it was her fault that Anna died, so their grandpa took the kids until they couldn't take care of them anymore. That's when they went to the orphanage but we weren't sure which one. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!

We have very little since my grandma was an orphan and she didn't know much about her family. We know she came from Ireland, married William L Kuehn and they lived in Chicago. She would have died around in 1923 or 1924 in or shortly after giving birth to her 3rd child, Katherine. She had 2 other children Laura and John.

You and I are somehow related. My grandfather, Michael was baptized in Blarney. Parents Hannah Healy and John Desmond were married in Inniscarra with witnesses Patrick O'leary and Catherine Crowley. My grandfather, Michael also had siblings named: William, Mollie and Nora(who are unidentical twin girls that is carried by a Desmond male. My mother happens to be one of those unidentical twins), Jeremiah (Known as Jerry) Patrick, Daniel. My grandfather, Michael, is the youngest. According to the 1911 census a stepdaughter is listed to John Desmond. Her name is Catherine Leahy, the 1901 lists it as Lealy.

Desmond married to Matilda Green. Phew, I feel like I just entered a jousting competition (have you seen the movie Knight's Tale? I digress.)

Cornelius J. is as far back as I've been able to trace. I have been researching high & low to find James' 1st wife, John C. Desmond's mother. Do you have information on her? James was single in 1890 and widowed with a 5 yr old son by 1900. Can you help me fill in this important blank?

Dale Desmond
Idaho Falls, ID

DESMONDs from Kilmurry, Cork
I am looking for assistance in locating any records related to some Irish ancestors who were from Kilmurry parrish in Cork. I do not have exact dates of birth, but a realistic estimate would be 1800-1801 for the Desmond ancestor and 1775 for his and his wifes parents.

These couples are:

Denis Desmond and wife Ellen Buckley

& John Callaghan and wife Mary Kenney

Denis and Ellen are listed as parents of my 3rd great-grandfather, Patrick Desmond born in Ireland around 1800. He may have emigrated first to New Brunswick, Canada and then to Quebec with his parents at a very early age because later documents provided by his descendants indicate that his “native tongue” was French as was that of his wife Mary Callaghn.

Patrick married Mary Callaghan at the Notre Dame cathedral in Quebec and the marriage record (in French) says that his parents were Denis Desmond and Ellen Buckley from Kilmurry, Cork and that the parents of the bride, John Callaghan and Mary Kenney were also from Kilmurry.
Any assistance or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Dan Desmond
Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, USA
I am also searching for Desmond's from areas in Cork; Blarney, Tower, Inniscarra. Jeremiah Desmond and a brother worked in the Blarney Mill and one may have lived at #5 Blarney Square, where there was housing for the employees. The relative surnames: Forde, O'Callaghan, Sullivan, Wall, O'Mahoney. I received an Email years ago from a Bill Desmond, living in Cork, who also had an uncle but it was Gerry not Jerry and his other uncles were John and Dan. He believes they are connected. His searc also yielded a Hannah in Blarney. I came to a dead end after that, so I wanted to check with you after reading this.

Do you have any idea where the parents or granddparents came from in Ireland? I think most Desmond`s hail from Kinsale area. I have learned there are quite a lot of Johanna Desmond`s so knowing where they originated from is all important.

Hello ~ I have an ancestor named Hannah/Johanna Desmond who I believe was born in New York state in 1866. She was my grandfather's sister. Their parents were Jeremiah Desmond (1818-1897)and Mary Burns (born around 1820-25). The family lived in the town of Lawrence, Lawrence County, upstate New York, very close to the US/Canadian border from the 1860's on. I do not know Johanna's married name. I know the birth date does not match the birth date of your Johanna but perhaps there is some tie between our families.

Not definitive where in Ireland they hailed from--some records say Cork, others say Limerick. I have more work to do on the Ireland side of this family!

Hi there Raymond

I apologise, it's been many years since your reply, I've only just now started researching again and found that Martin John Desmond was my great grandfather's father after all. People have often mentioned Martin, but they have never heard of him having a son named Edward Ignatius...

This evening I looked through some military records a researcher sent me and finally made the connection. :) For some reason Edward (I always only known his second name, Ignatius)'s second name was written down as Augustus, then crossed out and replaced with Angnestus on his military info from the early 1900's, I'm guessing he became fed up with correcting it to the enrollment officer... or for some reason chose to use the name. His next of kin was listed as Martin Desmond living in Victoria Road, Grahamstown. That is Martin John, is it not? Excited to make some progress...
