It sounds like you're referring to Dr. Francis Despins, the Civil War surgeon, and his wife Mary Jane Kelso. They were the parents of Francis Edwin Despins (b. 1854)

Dr. Despins' father was Isaac Despins, and Mary Jane's parents were Henry B. Kelso and a woman called Susan, whose native name was Awanata. She was the daughter of Chief Big Wave of the Menominee.

Frank Despins' mother was actually Anna McCabe. Frank is my great uncle. His sister, Alice, is my great grandmother. Mother to Elinor Julia (born Julia Elinor) Smits nee Steffen.

I hope that clears up some confusion as you plot along finding information! :)

If anyone has information on Edwin Francis Despins (Frank's father) parentage, that would be very appreciated.

Thank you!

I am doing some research and I am trying to find ancestors for Joseph Leon Despins (1906-2000) son of Joseph Casimir Despins (1881-1973). Supposedly Casimir had a brother named Hendrick and one of the ancestors went by the name Napoleon. Do any of these names match what you have?

Additionally, the family name was changed years back from Lefebvre dit Despin to Despin to avoid confusion with the other Lefebvre dit families.

His father was Edwin or Francis Edwin. His brothers were George, Arthur, Vernon,, Edwin, and Jim(called John). My grandfather was born in 1881 in Wrightstown. Vernon was his younger brother. My grandfather died in 1937, not 1935, at the age of 56. His brother Arthur (Art) died in 1938 and his brother John was killed in Winnibago. We have the death certificate of my grandfather, but would like to talk with you about the family tree. There is another relative, called Caleb Despins, who also has information. I rarely check this location. I use my other e-mail.

My great great grandmother was Awanata or Susan Despins who married my great great grandfather. My grandfather lived in Racine,WI. He died in the late 1930's. I am a descendent of his second marriage to Helen Best. Dr. Frank Despins was first married to Mary Martin? and had five children. He had two boys and a girl with Helen.
Dr. Francis Despins was my grandfather, but I never met him. He was my mother's father, but they were never married in the Catholic church. He had several children by his first wife, Mary. He then married/lived with Helen Best. He was a chiropractor. His grandfather married Awanata, a Menominee Princess. Her father was Chief Big Way. We have contacted Art Despins, his nephew, but he recently died. His widow, who is no relation, refuses to show us the family tree or share any pictures she has in her possession. I have recently been contacted by Caleb Despins, who states he is the great-grand nephew of Dr. Francis Despins. How are you related? My mother is 70 . Dr. Frank Despins and Helen had three children born in 1929, 1930, and 1931. One, Bill Best, is dead. My uncle as Alzheimers. Only my mother is left. Please give us any information you can or perhaps we can work as a team. Thanks, Diane Lazewski 414-258-8730

I just wanted to make a few clarifications. First, the Menominee chief is "Big Wave", not "Big Way". You can read about him on the Menominee's web page. Second of all, I beleive you are confused about "Susan Despins". I believe you mean Susan Kelso, the wife of Henry B. Kelso. Susan (who was Indian) and Henry had a daughter, Mary Jane, who married Dr. Francis J. Despins. I have no idea who Jacques Despins is. I would be EXTREMELY interested in contacting you so we could exchange info, preferably photocopies of actual documents.

I don't recognize any of those names but are family tree is limited because the records don't show where my grandfather Raoul Despins was born. I know it was Quebec, but other than that I haven't been able to find out anymore information. Wish you luck on your quest.

I am a little confused, because I've seen a lot of the Despins' first names used interchangably, but I'll tell you what I think I know. My father is Dale Francis Schmitt, his mother was Ruth Mae Despins. Her father was Vernon Charles Despins (1888-1969). His father was allegedly Francis Edwin Despins (1854-1935). His father was Dr. Francis Despins (married to Mary Jane Kelso of Pennsylvania). Dr. Despins' father is MAYBE Edwin Despins. My facts are secondhand from my grandmother, Ruth Mae. I will be receiving original records within the next week.

Joseph Alphonse Hendrick DESPINS

Debra,

Since you had an exact place and date, I thought I'd see what I could find in a few minutes. I looked first for a marriage of parents and then the actual baptism. The info you had is not fully correct. I suspected I had found the right marriage in Batiscan but it took the baptism to confirm that. Also the date you had was reversed. The baptism of Joseph Alphonse Hendrick(x?) DESPINS was on 12 Apr 1884 and he was born the day before (or as written in Canada 11-4-1884.) The register has the month written out. The parents listed are Napoleon DESPINS, farmer, & Calix ADAM of this parish. Godparents are Ephrem BRUNELLE & Antoinette DURAND FHL Film 1430862, Item 1.

The marriage also took place there and I found it in the printed marriage volume.

27 Oct 1880
Napoleon DESPINS of Thomas D & Lumina BRUNEL
md Calixte ADAM of Francois A & Adeline BRUNELLE

Her sister RoseAnna married Gustave LEHOUILLIER.

It is possible Napoleon remarried later to Bernadette L'HOUILLIER. By the way it appears the name in the baptism is written Hendrickx. I think it was an unusual name for the priest.

Charlotte

His wife was Marie Cecile Caliste Admas 1861-1900 That's as far back as my list goes. Feel free to contact me if you would like. Bernadette Despins was the daughter I believe.
