I suspect that Nancy Detamore was the mother of my 3rd Great grandfather, William A. Stanton, b. 1831 VA. She was married to Garland Stanton c. 1800-1837, and they were the parents of 7 children, all born in VA. She married George W. Detamore around 1842, most likely in OH and had three more children. I'm hoping to find some confirmation about this relationship and would be happy to share what I have found.
Re: Hessian soldier - Jacob / Christian DETAMORE

Pamela,

Sorry I have taken so long to reply. I thought I would get an alert from Ancestry when you replied but I did not. My mother was a Detamore, so I have spent quite a lot of time on that line. I am a stickler for proof, so I have had to debunk several erroneous stories about Jacob Detamore, the Hessian. He never existed. Rather, the first Virginia Detamore was Christian, and he probably was the offspring of some PA Detamores. Here is an excerpt from a longer piece that I have written on the subject. There is more if you are interested about the possible roots of Christian Detamore, Sr.

"Origins of the Detamore Family in Virginia,” Revision 5.2, December 6, 2010, Roger J.Mattson, PhD. This paper contains the following information: Three historical records have been found to bracket the time of arrival of the earliest Detamores in Virginia. The first of those records is an extract from the court records of Augusta County. An entry in a list of Circuit Court "Causes Ended" reads "13th September 1816, Christian Dedimer, aged 60, deposes, has lived within 2 miles of Craven's plantation for 36 or 37 years." This entry leads to two conclusions, namely,
• Christian Dedimer was born about 1756, and
• He lived near Craven's Plantation in Virginia from about 1780 to at least 1816.

The second record comes from the first census of the U.S. It was conducted in 1790 but fire destroyed many of the records. In Rockingham County, VA, the first census was reconstructed from a county census conducted in 1784. Records from that census list the heads of households and the number of buildings. In that census, Christan Deadmour headed a household of four persons living next door to John Shoulderman’s household (more about him, below). Unlike later censuses, this one contained no age or birthplace for the persons named.

The third record comes from the American Genealogical-Biographical Index. It cites the same census listed above as the source for the information that Christian was born in Virginia in 1750. It is not a reliable source because the census it cited contained neither the place nor the date of birth of the participants.

Based on these records, it is probable that Christian Detamore was born in about 1756 and came to the Augusta County area of Virginia about the time of the Revolutionary War.

David C. Detamore conducted extensive research of land records from the late 1700s and early 1800s for Rockingham County, VA, which was created from the northern part of Augusta County. He found land records involving Henry Coaler. Henry had three daughters, namely, Ann (Susannah who married Conrad Hulvey), Elizabeth (who married Christian Detamore), and Catherine (who married Henry Shoulderman). The most important of these records show that in about 1782 Henry Coaler willed Christian and Elizabeth Detamore 120 acres and that this land was near to land located on East Fork of East Cooks Creek (now Blacks Run) owned by Robert Cravens and land adjoining Cravens owned by Lanahan and Quinn. This area was located between heads of Curtises Creek (now Pleasant Run) and East Crooks Creek and bounded on the north by Harrison. This area is a few miles northwest of Friedens Church. David concludes that the Craven plantation and the Christian and Elizabeth Detamore property were probably between Friedens Church and Harrisonburg; some references refer to Craven lands "crossing and recrossing the Great Road" (Route 11).

Early census records from Rockingham County corroborate many of the names and associations connected to early Detamore land records described above. The 1784 census of Rockingham County shows the household of Christan Deadmour consisted of four white souls living in one dwelling next to the household of John Shoulderman with four white souls and no dwelling. This information indicates that the Shouldermans and Detamores were living together, perhaps on the lands left to them by Henry Coaler.

Christian Detamore, Sr. was 45 or more years old and had a wife of his same age group (born before 1765) in both the 1810 and 1820 censuses. These same census records also describe the size and makeup of the Senior Christian Detamore's family. In 1810 Christian Detimore and his wife had two girls aged 16 - 26 and one boy aged 10 - 16 living in their household; in 1820 the family included only one female aged 16 - 26. There are other census records of the children of Christian Detamore, Sr. The Federal census of 1810 lists the Henry Detimore family in Rockingham County and the Jacob Detimore family in Augusta County. The age categories of the heads of household residing in these residences according to the census records are consistent with birth years of 1784 and 1787, respectively. The Federal census of 1820 lists Jacob and George Detmore in separate homes in Rockingham County with age categories that are consistent with birth years of 1787 and 1796 (or 1794), respectively. The Federal census of 1810 lists Cruistian Dedimon (Christian Detamore, Jr.) in Montgomery County, VA with a wife his age and a female child under 10. In the 1820 census of Montgomery County, Christian Detimore (Jr.) and a wife his age (still Mary Doreman) are listed along with 5 children.

Early tax records from Rockingham County also corroborate names and associations connected to early Detamore land and census records. Tax records show that in 1788 Christian Detamore listed personal property of 120 acres and three horses; in 1790 he registered one white male over the age of sixteen and four horses. In 1793 Christian's personal property consisted of two horses, and in 1800 and 1801 he registered one white male over 16 and four horses. In 1792 there were three white males over 16 years of age in Cris. Deadman's home that was located in Captain George Huston's Company Number 4, nearby the residence of Henry Shoulderman. The two white men over age 16 living with Christian in 1792 have not been identified. His oldest son Henry would only have been eight years old at the time.

Knowing that Cris. Deadman resided in Captain George Huston's Company Number 4 in 1792 provides further evidence about the location of the Detamore land. Company Number 4 contained persons living near the old Keezletown Road from Augusta County north into Rockingham County, an area that extended east as far as Port Republic and Weyers Cave. Company Number 4 evidently included the fertile Mill Creek Valley. Mill Creek heads at Taylor's Springs (later Massanetta Springs), flows south and enters the North River a mile above Port Republic. Many of those listed in Company Number 4 attended church at Friedens Church and Old Peaked Mountain Church in McGaheysville.

The order to construct the Keezletown Road was recorded in Orange County Court in May 1745. One of the people listed as an overseer of the construction was Robert Cravens. An historical map of Rockingham County shows that Friedens Church was near Shaver's Hill and about three miles north of the county's border with Augusta County. That border is formed by the North River, a tributary of the Shenandoah River. Friedens Church was about seven miles southeast of Harrisonburg and ten miles southwest of McGaheysville. This is the southeastern quadrant of Rockingham County.

Church records provide further information about Christian Detamore, Sr. His family was associated with Friedens Church and its pastor, the Reverend Johannes Braun, for a number of years. Records from Friedens Church give a partial chronicle of their membership, confirmations, and marriages. (The baptismal records began in July 1786; the communicant records began in September 1802.) On March 4, 1787, Christian Dettemer and his wife Elisabeth (nee Coaler) presented their son Johann Jacob, born February 19, 1787, for baptism. On October 13, 1793, Christian Dettemer and his wife Elisabeth (nee Coaler) presented their daughter Mar. Catr., born September 30, 1793, for baptism. On May 29, 1803, Elisabeth Duttermann was a communicant. On March 11, 1804, Elisabeth Dutemer was present for the baptism of her granddaughter Sara, daughter of Heinrich Detmer and his wife Elizabeth (nee Miller). On the 14th Sunday Past Trinity, 1804, Christian Dettmer and wife, Elisabeth Dettmere, Jacob Dettemer, Heinrich Dethmer, and Elisabeth Dettmern were Communicants. There are numerous subsequent entries for the Detamores in this reference, including the baptisms of the children of Heinrich Detamore and his wife Elisabeth Miller, namely, Sara, Katharina, Jacob, Mari Elisabeth, Johannes, Christian Friderich, and Eva. Another son of Christian Senior, Jacob Detemer and his wife Soffe (Sophia Lotz) presented their son Jacob for baptism on April 5, 1813. Another reference provides further data from Friedens Church. It is a set of records by the pastor of Friedens, the Reverend Johannes Braun. Christ. Dedmer was recorded as a communicant in 1799. This was probably Christian Detamore, Sr., since Christ. Dettmer Jr. was not listed as a confirmand until February 14, 1805, with his birth date given as February 1785. Confirmands at Friedens Church on June 17, 1810 included Marg. Detmer, baptized October 8, 1791, and Mari Cath. Detmer, baptized October 3 (13?), 1793. These were daughters of Christian Detamore, Sr. and Elisabeth Coaler Detamore.

The records of Reverend Braun also show that he married Heinrich Deademer and Elizabeth Miller on March 27, 1803 and Christian Dettemer (this was Christian Junior, as demonstrated below) and Maria Doreman in January 1809. The Rockingham County records of marriage bonds provide additional information to supplement and confirm the records from Friedens Church. Both Christian Dedimore, Jr. and Sr. are named in a bond dated January 17, 1809 with John Tyler for the marriage of Christian Dedimore to Mary Doreman. The younger Christian Dedimore was the groom in this case. He was 24 years old at the time. There is a secondary reference to this marriage indicating that Christian Detamore, Sr. married Mary Doreman. That secondary reference is in error because Christian Detamore, Sr. was 45 or more years old and had a wife of his same age group (born before 1765) in both the 1810 and 1820 censuses. Also, there is no evidence that Christian Detamore Sr. and Elisabeth Coaler Detamore parted before his death in 1822.

Christian Detamore, Sr. and his wife Elizabeth both died in Rockingham County, about ten years apart. On June 3, 1822 Daniel Kyser was named administrator of Christian Detamore's estate; Christian apparently had died intestate. On about November 1, 1832 George Detamore entered into a bond as executor of Elizabeth Detamore's estate. There was a will mentioned in this bond, but it has not been located. There is also a January 20, 1834 record of George Detamore's service as the Administrator of the estate of Elizabeth Detamore. By a process of elimination, this Elizabeth Detamore is believed to be the wife of Christian Detamore Sr., because she definitely is not Elizabeth Miller Detamore, the wife of Henry Detamore. Elizabeth Miller Detamore died about August 16, 1860 in Preble County, Ohio and left a will dated December 12, 1859 and a bounty land declaration in 1855 that clearly established her identity.
Perhaps you already know and have searched this excellent West Virginia records' link below:

http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_select.aspx

Under MARRIAGES, I found a Will DETAMORE who married a Belle ALLEN Feb. 15, 1907 in Charleston, Kanawha County, WV, and he is listed as 29 yrs. old and she is 23. The actual record image is available for viewing.

I also found a Belle NICHOLS, age 18, who married a Thomas ALLEN, age 21, on Oct. 20, 1902 in Kanawha County, WV. This would put Belle's birth year near your suggested time frame. You say she was "born around 1886" and if you got her age from a federal census, then don't hold your breath, as frequently birth years are off a few years. At least among my family... If the family wasn't home to talk with the census taker or if a visiting relative answered the door instead of the residents, then an approximate age might have been given to the enumerator instead of the correct data.

I would suggest using the wild card when searching, as frequently names are misspelled.

I am so surprised, my first message from you was in 2003, but I have been without a computer for 3 years and did not realize until today, that in your message (Jan.12,2009); we have a match.
My grandmother's maternal grandparents were Jacob and Amanda Detamore. They are buried in our family cemetery plot in Kearney, Nebraska. (as are my grandparents and as of last year my parents)
I would love to have a copy of "The Little Red Book"s contents as I have had no reply to anyone having "More and More Detamores."
My gggrandmother was their forth daughter, Leonia E Detamore, born October 17,l867.
I knew Caroline,(Aunt Tiny),Aunt Laurah, and Aunt Lula. I don't remember Marion; Clara, Viola, and Craten died before I was born.
Craten s. was their ninth and last child and the only info I have in my 'Grandmother's little black book' is that he was born February 27,1877,died 1933, and was married to Clara Sample.
I do have boxes of pictures, including one of Aunt Tiny's first husband, James Clark, taken in 1894.

I am trying to find the maiden name of a Belle Detimore born in West Virgina- she is listed in the 1910 census as Bell Allen with 3 children named allen and youngest as Eva Detimore - Eva's marriage certificate has spelling of Detamore. Bell signed her child Polly's birth cert as Belle Alen in West Virgina.

Belle was born around 1886 in WV as was her husband only listed as Allen no first name - no record so far of Belle's birth or parents. No mention of which Detamore she married but she is listed as married twice and a widow.

Thanks for any help.

PS: Her 3 Allen children are Poly, Thomas and Hallie.

Re: Mythical Christian Detamore, Hessian soldier

Sorry to answer so late. Haven't been at this site in ages. I would love to believe that Christoph, Christian, Jacob are one and the same person but there seems to be no proof one way or another.

Since Christoph Dettmar was born in 1750......and this is recorded in German records, and since all they know about him is that he either was killed or deserted, it would appear that most likely he was the first Detamore to come to the Shenandoah Valley. Christian appears on Virginia tax rolls in 1810.....not Jacob.....no other.

The Reform Church at Old Peaked Mountain has no evidence of a cemetery due to abuse over the years. All headstones are gone. It is a lawn. Personally I see no way to prove just exactly who the first Detamore was who came to Virginia. Bear in mind that Christoph being born in 1750 makes him 26 years old when the Revolutionary War was at its height. And we all know the British burned everything in their path. I doubt if we will ever know.
There supposedly was a Hessian soldier deserter, Christoph Dettmar, however the Joseph Schwalm Historical Society, www.JHSA.org and HETRINA.com both state it is inconclusive whether Christoph deserted or was killed. There is no firm connection between Christoph Dettmar and all the different Christian/Johann/Jacob Detamore everyone includes in their trees as factual. Check ship passenger records at the genealogy dept. of your library. There were hundreds of regular old every day immigrants Dettmer, Dettmar, Dettemer, Dettimore, Dedmore, Deadmor and on and on. I think unresolvable situation.

According to the book 'Genealogy of the Detamore Family' Jacob Detamore a Hessian soldier and was a minister and is in the Old Peaked Mountain Cemetery next to his wife.

Not Christian. But since I do not have the name of Jacob Detamore's wife I suppose there is the possibility that the two men could be the same. What do you think?
After reviewing the Book 'The Genealogy of the Detamore Family' I think I have a mistake. Unless I am now mistaken, William Detamore May and Margaret E Clark are not related to Christian Detamore and Elizabeth Coaler. Catherine Detamore is the mother of William D May and Jacob Detamore the Hessian soldier is the father of Catherine Detamore.

Jacob Detamore (1750-?)
Catherine (Detamore) May
Michael May (from Tennessee)
William Detamore May
Margaret E (Clark) May

My Detamore line does not appear to go through Christian Detamore and Elizabeth Coaler is I had previously thought.

I hope I did not mislead anyone.
I am also looking for the book More and more Detamores. I am unable to find the book in the LDS Family History Center Library Catalog. I have found only 3 copies of the book in 3 libraries in Indiana.

Allen County Public Library Ft Wayne, IN 46801 US

Marion Public Library Marion, IN 46953 US

Indiana State Library Indianapolis, IN 46204 US

There is a book in the LDS catalog called Genealogy of The Detamore Family. I did get a copy of that book which is 39 pages. My connection with the Detamore family is through the Tennessee branch (Michael May and Catherine Detamore)and the book is very sparse about this part of the family. It is just enough information to make the connection.

I am a descendant of Maria Catherine Detamore b. 30 Sep 1793 in , Rockingham Co., Va who married Michael May b. 1790 in <, Rockingham Co., Va> who had son William Detamore May. William D May moved to Clinton TN and married Margaret E Clark. I have some data but I am probably missing much.

I would really like to find stories, pictures and books. I would like to know these ancestors better.

I think Maria Catherine is the daughter of Christian Detamore and Maria Elizabeth Coaler of Rockingham VA.
Mythical Christian Detamore, Hessian soldier

I have searched for several years in an attempt to find actual, real, honest to G, documentation proving that Christian Detamore is who everyone says he is. I have reviewed the Arthur C.M. Kelly records, Hessian troops in the American Revolution from the Hetrina. Also Notes on Hessian Soldiers who remained in Canada and the Unites States after the American revolution, 1775-1784 by Clifford Neal Smith. I have contacted HETRINA in Germany who have no such record. There is a CHRISTOPH DETTMAR shown as remaining in America and no, repeat, NO, Christian Detamore. Also, the Johannes Schwalm Historical Association (www.jsha.com) has NO Christian Detamore in the group of soldiers who have been proven to have remained in America by documented evidence. Christoph Dettmar is in the patrially researched category and no documentation has been submitted to prove he became Christian Detamore. There is no evidence of a Christian Detamore, minister, at Old Peaked Mountain Church records, nor is a Christian Detamore buried at the Old Peaked Mountain Church at MacGaheysville, VA. There are NO ship passenger records of a Christian Detamore arriving in America as an immigrant. WHO CREATED THIS MYTH?? Someone please tell me I am wrong with documented evidence.
Charlie, I challenge you to find another Christian Detamore/Dettemer/Dettimore/Christoper Dettmar. This is the guy.....our common ancestor. Some old guy named William A. Detamore wrote a 29 page history on the Detamores and submitted it to the Mormon church files in 1946. In it he mentioned Christian became a devout and beloved Reform church minister. I found it on the Mormon church records. I went to www.familysearch.org, clicked on the Search icon, and next screen clicked Family History library, next screen entered Detamore in Surname search. William's book came up and is available to order on loan from the church on 35mm film and can be reviewed and copied at any nearby Mormon church that has a Family History Center, which practically all of them have. William also stated that Christian and a compatriot slipped through their picket line (we call it the front in modern wars) and switched to the other side and were never captured. You still didn't answer my question......do you know if Christian or whatever his name was had a daughter named Mary Elizabeth? I have records from Frieden Reform church in Rockingham county, Va where Mary Eliz was married to my GGGGF Samuel but can't connect her to Christian eventhough he was the only Detamore/Deadmore/etc., in the Shenandoah valley at the time. I have a record of his sons but the Mormon church records indicate his two oldest children as "Names Unavailable". Sure wish I could slip Mary Eliz into one of those unavailables.
Elizabeth married Samuel Good, my 3GF and their first born son David, Sept 20, 1807 is our only clue to Elizabeth. A few of us decendants are in a research group trying to find from whence Elizabeth cometh! If you go to rootsweb and search for Jacob Good about 52 trees will come up and the very first on the list is Christian Jacob Detamore. The family composition shows the first two children as "unavailable". One of those unavailables has got to be Elizabeth but we can't make the connection. Please reply and join in the hunt!
