Who are you? Which one of Uncle Chick's children was your parent? I will have to mention this to my mom. Do you remember their sister Mattie? That was my mom's mom. I am not currently subscribing to ancestry.com because I am focusing on finishing my degree, but I do want to get back on here as soon as possible. Have you gotten very far on the Deville side? I haven't been able to get past our great great grandparents. I said our because apparently we are third cousins!

Marius DeVille's parents

Need help sorting out my Mariuses:

1. DEVILLE, Marius b. 13 Dec. 1859 in VP (Jean, fils & Azolide SAUCIER) m. 1 Dec. 1880 Josephine B. FONTENOT, b. 27 Jan. 1865 in VP (VP Ch.: Mar. v. 2, p. 304)

Question: Who is Jean DeVille Senior in this family? I have an Azeline Saucier who married Fremont DeVille; don't think it's the same person. This Marius, married to Josephine Belair Fontenot, is the father of Emilia DeVille, b. 15 Dec. 1885.

2. Who is Azolide/Zeolite Saucier? Two possibilities I came across: a) SAUCIER, Mary Azeline (Arcene & Aurelia DARBONNE) b. 8 March 1899 (Opel. Ch.: v.7, p.448); & b) Marie Zeolite Azoline Saucier 1839-1870; found in someone else's family tree.

There appears to be yet another Marius DeVille, son of Arsene Jacquemon Chapman. These two Mariuses appear to be crossed up in many family trees. Thanks for your help!

She lived in Ville Platte, was born in 1911 and died in 1984. I also believe that she had a twin sister Lina who married my grandfather's first cousin Henry Brown.

I found Elta & Sina on the 1930 census but nothing earlier.

By process of elimination, using the dates as key evidence, and also employing the old naming tradition, I have a STRONG HUNCH that he was the firstborn of Isabel Huffman and Valentino Valerio "Vallery" Deville. Ancestry gives their marriage as 1825, but at their age it could very well have been 1821-1822. I can't prove this, and am not claiming that I can. Please use this info as a starting point for your own investigation, only.
Also using the logic of that good old European naming tradition, his wife Louisa b. abt. 1839 (from 1860 and 1870 Rapides census) was very likely surnamed Kilpatrick. If you have access to the whole Ancestry.com site, look in the trees at Andrew Conger Kilpatrick and his wife Jane Sophronia Tanner; if they were her parents it would explain some of the names in the next generation of the tree....

My name is Linda Deville, I am new to this search. In referance to your your grandmother. My father was Joseph Deville, son of Artemon Deville who I believe his mother to be Augustine Gradeni. My father used to talk about his grandmother being a short Cherokee Indian that could really ride a horse. Maybe this is a just a similarity but I do not think so. I would love to talk to you about any information that you may have.

Linda

Hi Bruce! No, I am sorry but I was unable to locate Arstille. He must be from a different clan. Have you tried Carla DeVille? I don't know if she is still on this forum. If I can get hold of her, I will ask her to come visit here and see if these folks are from her husband's line.
Best, Mimi

He has some Chapman and Fontenot neighbors, so I think I may know what line he descends from. Give me a couple of days to do some digging and I may have some more info.

I would estimate Arstilles birth at approximately 1889. One of his sons was born in 1909, so his age is just a guesstimation. I have no other info. According to his grandson Arstille should be the correct spelling. I believe they were from the Turkey Creek or surrounding area.

I spoke to Mr. Nick Fontenot from Grand Prairie who is a great historian and writer about the area. He knows Ms. Anna Belle's family. Here goes: Annabelle's father was Joseph Elford Vidrine, not sure of his wife's name. Joseph Elford Vidrine's parents are Dominique Vidrine and Mary not sure of the last name. Dominique's parents were Dominique Vidrine and Algee Doucet. Algee Doucet's parents are Lastie Doucet and Emelie Deville. Some of this information can be found in Father Hebert's books Southwest Louisiana Records at the library. Fred must have been a nickname or shortened version of the Elford. Sorry I do not have any information on the Granger side but I am very interested since my mother was a Granger. All of this is very fascinating. Do you live in Mamou? I live in Belaire Cove. I use to work at the Mamou hospital up until December 2007. I have one year left of school to become a teacher.

Hey Carla, how are you? I still get the notifications in my email. Nice to see your name.

The only variations I have seen are in presentation:
de Ville or De Ville when spelled as two names. ("de" is a preposition so my family uses it as our elders did.) Then there is Deville or DeVille with no space, and I've heard that Devilliers branched off from the de Villes, but no source to back that up.

Their marriage record may provide you with their parents names.
The Deville name doesn't really have a lot of variations. The D'Avil name has lots of variations such as the wakine, ghiavil, chavil, ghavil, seraphin, wakin, diaville, deaville, de avila, and D'Aville to name a few. Yes there are a few devilles that were recorded under the deaville and diaville name but for the majority of the devilles they are found under deville.
