Classification: Query
Surnames: Dewitt, Cook
I have a Samuel Dewitt who is my 4x great grandfather. He was born in New York around 1828. I have him in the 1850 census with a wife and some young children, his wife was named Dorcas and I believe her maiden name was Cook. They were residing in Wolcott, Wayne, New York. In 1860, they were in Plymouth, Richland, Ohio. The weird part is that the 'parents' who should be Samuel and Dorcas Dewitt are listed as John and Mary Dewitt, or Samuel and Dorcas' children are living with a different couple. Am unsure but the children match up. Their children include: Nathaniel, Levi, Eudolpha, Edith, Almander (Daar), and Anna.
Anyways, I am looking for info on who Samuel's parents might be. He is lost in that info gap that occurs between 1850 and 1840. There are some Dewitts in the Wolcott, Wayne, NY area in 1850 but I can't just assume. I am planning on approaching my grandmother's brother about the Dewitt DNA test (he is the only son of my great granparents that had sons to continue the Dewitt line), but am unsure how well he could afford it, I know I can't even if I could take it...
Does my Samuel belong to any of you?? I know that the Dewitt name is heavy in New York, but hopefully someone has my Samuel in their trees.
