Your grandfather Henry Birt Dewitt III (1909-1930), was the son of Henry Birt Dewitt Jr (1885-1932) & Lilly Rebecca Englebart (1885-1952).
I share a relative in common. Your grandfather's brother, Clarence Albert Dewitt (1906-1968) is a greatgrandparent in my family. A living grandparent confirmed the names and relatives. I live here in Spokane. I will attach a census record for you. The lineage is quite extensive. Dewitt relatives still live here in Spokane.

Seeking to share information about, and correspond with descendants of Charles DeWitt, born 1795 in Windham, Connecticut USA, died August 28, 1868 at Dewittville, Quebec. Married Elizabeth Ferguson, born ca. 1800, died May 21, 1871. Both are buried at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church cemetery, Ormstown, Quebec. Charles DeWitt was a steamboat captain, merchant and Justice of the Peace in the Chateauguay area. He was charged with High Treason during the Lower Canada Rebellion in 1838, and was jailed in Quebec for several months before being released. According to Elizabeth Ferguson’s will, they had 10 surviving children – Charles Benjamin; Mary Jane (m. William Manuel, to Brockville, ON); Henry; Caroline (m. John Graham, to Iowa); Jabez Dean (in Virginia City, NV in 1871-2); William (d. Louisiana late 1871 or 1872); Rebecca (m. Andrew Jack); John; Harriet Amelia (unmarried); and Charlotte Elisabeth (unmarried).

I believe so, too...I was particularly interested in the sons named in Charles of Orangeburg's will (1770), where he named James (my gggg gf) and Joseph as his sons. I don't know why the majority of trees on ancestry think that Joseph is the same one that lived in Horry County, when he was born in St. George's Parish in the Dorchester/Colleton area. He may well be, but I'm just looking for any evidence that may have led them to that conclusion...or is everyone just making an assumption? Thanks, Stephen DeWitt

Francess DeWitt is my Grandfather's sister. Her parents George Sidney (known as Sidney)DeWitt and Caroline Rockwell raised 12 children in Carleton County, NB: Laura (1875), Frances (1877), Gideon (1878), Whitfield (1881), Willard (1883), Bertha (1884), Celia (1885), Lucinda (1886), Harrison (1889), Adolphus (my grandfather 1890), Silas (1892), Rena May (1896). Many of the children married in Maine and raised famlies in Maine and other New England states. I have lots of info on some of them, a just a little on others. This query is old, anyone still working on this family?

Many family trees on ancestry.com. show Joseph DeWitt Sr., and Joseph Dewitt, Jr. as the son of Charles DeWitt, Jr. of Orangeburg, who had the will recorded in 1770. This Charles named sons James and Joseph (Sr.) in his will. I don't see any evidence that this Joseph is the same Joseph that lived in Horry County in the early 1800s. Horry County is in the northeastern corner of the state. Charles DeWitt above lived in Orangeburg, and his descendants lived in the area where four current day counties meet: Orangeburg, Bamburg, Dorchester, and Barnwell. Not sure why Joseph would have moved to Horry County. It would seem he would have come from the Dewitts in the Darlington area. Anyone have any info or sources on this Joseph in Horry County?

I'm curious because Elisabeth Dewitt Severance was the wife of industrialist John Severance who built Severance Hall, the home of the Cleveland Orchestra, in 1930. My grandmother Bunker used to say the Dewitts "think wonders who they are," which is a nice way of saying they were elitist. I think the 1855 birth year works. Maybe after Elisabeth married such a high-powered person, "they" erased her humble beginnings. Just a thought.

Re: Barent DeWitt - b. 1666

I realize that no one has posted an answer recently to the original query, but I'm hoping that someone is reading this board.

The parents of BARENT DeWITT were PIETER PIETERSE DeWITT--son of Pieter Jans DeWit [notice the spelling] and Dorothea Volckerts [NO relation to Dirck Volckertszen]--and SARA ALBERTS--daughter of Albert Hendrickse. Pieter and Sara were married about 1670, probably in Bushwick, Long Island, NY.

After considerable research, I have come to the conclusion that the above Pieter Jans DeWit is NOT related to any of the other DeWitt families of Dutch New Amsterdam. This information is also based on the "Biography of and Descent from Pieter Jans DeWit" by Andrew J. Provost Jr. [The title here is abbreviated, but it can be found online.]

Barent's birth place is not stated, but he was probably born about 1675-1680, possibly in Pennsylvania, where his parents moved shortly after they were married. This is not, however, a confirmed location. Barent could NOT have been born in Holland, if his parents were living in the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam!

Barent married in 1694 to SARAH VAN TASSEL*, daughter of JAN CORNELIS VAN TASSEL/TEXEL and ANNETJE ALBERTS TERHUNE, who was born in Tarrytown, Westchester Co., NY, and baptized at the Sleepy Hollow Reformed Dutch Church there.

The name Texel is Frisian, but because of historical sound changes in Dutch, where all -x- sounds have been replaced with -s- sounds,...the name is typically pronounced Tessel in Dutch. [See the Wikipedia entry for Texel.]

{*Let me address here the misconceptions about Sarah Van Tassel's grandparents, CORNELIS JANSZEN VAN TEXEL and CATERONAS. Cornelis was born about 1600 in Texel, Netherlands, and married in about 1624 to CATERONAS (called Catherine by the Dutch). "We know from petitions to governors of the New York colony that Catoneras was a full-blooded Native American, the daughter of a sachem, and laid claim to land at the base of Eaton's Neck. We can infer from the petitions that the land was sold out from under the aboriginal inhabitants by men who did not have permission to do so. The plot described corresponds to a plot of land described in the records of Huntington, NY, as being sold by a sachem of the Matinecock band of Indians. We also know from that Wyandance--"grand sachem" of the Montauk tribe (whose homeland was the eastern part of Long Island, far from Huntington and Eaton's Neck)--was much, much too young to have fathered Catoneras. There is not a shred of evidence of her in his more well-documented life." So, yes, Cateronas was the daughter of a sachem--probably the daughter of Asharoken the Matinecock--but just not the daughter of Wyandance the Montauk. My thanks and a tip o' the hat to Mike Wolfe, another Van Tassel descendant!}

Barent and Sarah moved to Somerset Co., NJ, sometime after 1710, probably because many other former Bushwick and Brooklyn people of Dutch heritage had also recently been settling there. Among those were Barent's sister and her husband--Maria DeWitt and Dirck Volckertszen--and his formerly widowed sister-in-law Anna Van Cleef DeWitt and her new husband, Phillip Volckerts.

Barent and Sarah's children were as the original query lists them:

1. Andries (Arie) DeWitt, b. c. 1695.
2. Petrus {twin} DeWitt, bap. 21 April 1697 (Tarrytown). Sponsors, Abraham De Revier, Jr., and Elizabeth Heyert.
3. Paulus {twin} DeWitt, bap. 21 April 1697 (Tarrytown). Sponsors, Abraham De Revier, Jr., and Elizabeth Heyert.
4. Catharina DeWitt, bap. 24 April 1699 (Tarrytown). Sponsors, Jan Hermanzen and Aeltje his wife. Catherine is related to have m. John Smithson.
5. Barent DeWitt, bap. 25 March 1706 (Tarrytown). Sponsors, Cornelis Van Texal and Aeltje Storm.
6. Sarah DeWitt, bap. 30 March 1708 (Tarrytown). Sponsors, Pieter Korteljouw [Cortelyou] and Divertje [DeWitt] his wife. Sarah is related to have m. Leonard Smock.

Sarah's death date is not certain, but she may have died in 1708, following the birth of her last child.

Barent married a second time, about 1709, to Elizabeth [LNU] [possibly Titus, daughter of Francis Titus]. Barent and Elizabeth had one known child:

Titus DeWitt, probably born about 1710, who married Elizabeth Weatherly.

Titus birth or baptismal date is not recorded, but since he was much younger than his other siblings and because he also did not name either of his daughters Sarah, the DeWitt family biographer Provost believed he was the son of Barent's second wife.

Hopefully, this information answers some questions I have seen in this thread.

I am descended from Hiram Dewitt, but there seems to be confusion in the records as to who his ancestors are.

Supposedly, his parents were David Dewitt and Rachel Starner, but there are no records to prove this.

Supposedly, David's parents Paul Dewitt and Charity Haufman, but there are no records to prove this, although this seems likely since David is mentioned in Paul's will.

My biggest problem is that I see various researchers have different parents for Paul Dewitt, which undermines entirely the thought that Paul might be descended from Pieter Jans De Witt of Leiden.

Are there actual records that show the connections?

Thanks.

Paul

Mary DeWitt Hunter

I have been searching the DeWITT family for my 4th great-grandmother MARY DeWITT (b. ? and d. 13 Sept. 1846 in Daviess Co., IN). She married JOHN HUNTER (b. 2 Dec. 1755 DE-d. 26 Nov. 1835 Daviess Co., IN) on 28 June 1794 in or near Newport Campbell Co., KY.

Their marriage date comes from the family Bible, so this is correct, as are the birth and death dates of John Hunter, who was a Revolutionary War soldier originally from PA.

After looking exhaustively through many church records, I cannot seem to find my Mary DeWitt. Since she was married in 1794, she may have been anywhere from 18-24, making her born 1768-1774; however, there is a chance she may also have been just as old as her husband and born between 1755-1775.

Very recently, I have found a possibility for her parents is PETER DeWITT (b. 1725-1726?, Orange Co., NY; d. 1776 or 1790 in Hampshire Co., VA, now part of WVA) and MARYTJE [MARY] ROOS (b. 1728 or 1735, Orange Co., NY; d. 1773 NJ?) They were married about 1749, probably in New York.

From the Bennet-DeWitt family papers, written by Richard Bate: "Somewhere between 1749 and 1753, Peter and Marytje moved to nearby Somerville, Sussex Co., NJ [which is just across the county/state line]. All of their children were born in Somerville."

"Jacob was born first in circa 1750, followed by Peter II, born 7 July 1753, Barnett, circa 1754, MARY, circa 1756 [my capitalization], Paulus, born circa 1758, William, born circa 1760 and Abraham, born circa 1761. Later on the family moved to Hampshire County, VA (now West Virginia). Here the elder Peter died and is buried."

Is Peter's daughter my Mary? Or did she perhaps die in infancy or as a young child? I have searched Ancestry and FamilySearch to no avail. There is very little information about Mary born in 1756.

However, my Mary is NOT the Mary DeWitt also born in 1756 who married WILLIAM ROSE and who later lived in New Jersey.

If anyone has information about Mary DeWitt who married John Hunter in 1794 KY, please contact me. Thank you.

I realize this is an older thread, but I'm hoping that someone is still reading it!

There is some question as to whether PIETER JANSEN DeWIT [note spelling] is related to any of the other DeWitt families who arrived in the Dutch colony of Nieuw Nederlandt [New Netherland].

Andries Provost Jr. in his book, "Early Settlers of Bushwick, Long Island, New York and their Descendants," states:

"Several of the name [DeWitt] came to New Amsterdam before and after the immigration of PIETER JANS DeWIT in 1652, such as:

"Gysbert DeWit, who in 1664 testified powder had been smuggled at New Amsterdam by the ship St. Peter;

"Jan Albertszen DeWit, who in 1662 as a j. m. [young man] van Leedam [from Leendam] married at Brooklyn Dutch Church to Gertruydt Wyngaerden and who may have been the Jan DeWit, miller, fined for picking his mill stone on a Sunday....;

"Johannes DeWit, merchant, of New Amsterdam who in 1662 before departing for Holland gave power of attorney to his wife Janneken; and

"Tjerck DeWit from Grootholdt who in 1656 married Barbara Andriessen and who in 1661 removed to Esopus {now Kingston} to found the DeWitt family of Ulster Co., NY.

"NONE [emphasis mine] of these is found of record as in any way associated with Pieter Jans deWit who, in the selection of baptismal sponsors for his children, appears to have limited them to his neighbors and close friends.

"It is this compiler's considered opinion that, in all probability, Pieter Jans DeWit was the immigrant progenitor of a DeWit family that is distinct from and entirely unrelated to the other American families bearing the same name."

As I have found it has been extremely difficult to research some members of Pieter Jansen's family, I am inclined to agree with Provost.

I hope this helps.
On 7 Mar 1810 Peter DeWitt of Frankford deeded land to Abraham DeWitt of Frankford, being the land of "John DeWitt Junr late of Newton now Frankford died intestate seized and possessed of a certain lot or parcel of land and premises situtated in the said township adjoining Sharps upper tract on Pepocoting (Papakating) . . . and leaving issue two daughters named Anna DeWitt and Mary DeWitt the said Anna since married to William Wilson and the sd Anna and William (the said Anna being of full age) did on the 13 day of October 1798 sell and convey one undivided half part of the said lands," containing 22 acres where said Abraham now lives, recorded 8 May 1811. There was a land indenture in 1820 between Abraham and Mehitable of Frankford and Samuel Price of Frankford, real estate of John DeWitt, deceased.

Enumerated in Frankford Township in 1830 with 1 male of age 5 and under age 10, 1 male of age 15 and under age 20, 3 males of age 20 and under 30, 1 male of age 50 and under age 60, 1 male of age 60 and under age 70, 2 females of age 15 and under age 20, 1 female of age 60 and under age 70.

Abraham d. 30 Jan 1835. DeWitt was appointed administrator of the estate of Abraham DeWitt, 19 Feb 1835 (Sussex County probate file 58945). Col. Joseph H. DeWitt protested the appointment of administrator (#2875). An inventory of the estate filed 3 Mar 1835 amounted to $259.38 and was recorded 10 Mar 1835. The farm in Frankford township upon which Abraham and Mehitable had resided was sold to satisfy debts, containing about fifty acres and situated on the west side of the road leading from Newton to Deckertown. Also, a woodlot and pasture in Frankford township containing about ten acres.
I believe that I am descended from Pieter Jansen DeWitt of Leiden, Netherland + Dorothea Volckers, but I have never been able to find any documentation (birth, marriage, ship, death records) connected to Helen Perry's project.

Are there actual records that show the connections?

Thanks.

Paul

There are three main lines of DeWitts who came to America and settled in New York and New Jersey in the late 1600s / early 1700s. There's abundant research on the Tjerck Claessen DeWitt line (Albany / Kingston).

Abraham is a descendant of the Pieter DeWitt line (Long Island).

1. Pieter Jansen DeWitt of Leiden, Netherland + Dorothea Volckers

1.1 Pieter DeWitt (Pieter Jansen) + Sarah Alberts

1.1.3 Barnet DeWitt (Pieter / Pieter Jansen) + Sarah VanTassel

1.1.3.3 Paulus DeWitt (Barnet / Pieter / Pieter Jansen) + Catherine Johnson

1.1.3.3.5 Peter DeWitt (Paulus / Barnet / Pieter / Pieter Jansen) + Marytje Roosa

1.1.3.3.5.6 Abraham DeWitt (Peter / Paulus / Barnet / Pieter / Pieter Jansen) + Mehitable Hopkins

For more information:

The De Witt Collaboration Project

For those who would like the study Helen Perry's almost 2000 pages of research on the DeWitt name can view her records. They have been filmed and the film can be ordered through any LDS History Center. The name and call number is Helen Perry's Collection # 2,056,030

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~geneal/src...

Dewitt-Slankard

I am looking for any information about my 2nd Great Grandparents. I have Thomas Slankard married to Mary Ann Dewitt in Pope County Illinois, 24 Dec 1851. I show that they had five children from 1854-1866. Their children were Marion E, John L,Indian, Harriet, and Candessa.

My information shows Mary born in Ohio to John and Mary Dewitt about 1835. Depending on the record I am looking at, I have found her listed as Mary, Mary Ann, or Marian. I have been unable to locate Thomas and Mary in any census records from 1860. By 1870, I find her living with her father and the five children, but neither her husband or her mother are listed.

If anyone has any information on this line, it would be greatly appreciated.

I wonder if Catherine de Witt, daughter of Barent and Sarah (van Tassel) de Witt, was ever married to Thomas Heyert (Hyatt) after John Smithson. The Hyatt and de Witt families seem to have been very close, and both had ties to New Castle, Delaware. Thomas Hyatt (probably the son of Thomas Hyatt and Elizabeth van Lent) died in 1756 while married to a woman named Catherine with children Thomas, John, Valentine, Isaac, Abraham, Ephraim, Catherine, Mary, Eleanor, Susannah, Rebecca, Rachel, Sarah, Anne, possibly Hannah, and one other daughter whose name was not recorded in her father's will.

I suspect these are the same Hyatts that were later found in Edgecombe, North Carolina, but more than circumstantial evidence is lacking.

I'm so glad to see another DeWitt researcher tired of the dead end looking for years with DNA available. There's 33 of us now that's taken the DNA test and they break down to 3 different lines. You need to contact our group administrator Floyd DeWitt at dewitts@hughes.net and he'll guide you thru the whole process. Glad to have you aboard Ken
