Susie MaeDEXTER GREEN---Arkansas

Hello,

I am trying to find the birth parents of my grandmother, Susie Mae DEXTER who married Alfred Eulin or Eulin Alfred GREEN in 1934 in Bald Knob, White Co., AR.

Susie Mae was born abt 1917 in Earle, Crittenden Co., AR or possibly even in Augusta, Woodruff Co., AR. The story goes like this: Susie's mother ran off with a man when Susie's father was sent to prison for murder. Susie was sent to live with a paternal aunt and uncle and 2 female cousins when it happened. The aunt and uncle lived in Earle at the time which was around the 1920's. One daughter of the aunt and uncle was named Pat who married a man who owned a furniture store in Bald Knob in the 1960's. No name for the spouse or the store.

I am trying to figure out if DEXTER was the birth surname for Susie OR if her surname was changed to the paternal aunt's married surname when she went to live with them.

If anyone can help me with any additional information on this family line, I would be very grateful. I am just getting into searching the family genealogy.

Thank you,
Pattie LaRue

DEXTER story England

There is a story my dad, born 1892, used to tell me. My maiden name is SMITH and I have my line traced back to Cayuga County, New York, 1792. Then the line vanishes.

The story goes like this:

Twin brothers fell in love with the same girl. They fought a duel and 1 killed the other. the surviving one fled to America along with his younger brother. In America, and probably before they got on the ship, they changed their name from DEXTER to SMITH.

Any stories in y'all's families match that?

Josiah Dexter / Sarah Bohall

After many years I've found one more clue relating to my Dexter family.
Great grandfather was William Wyatt Dexter born in Cleveland, Ohio about 1846 or abt 1856.
His father was Josiah Sherlock Dexter born in Oneida Co., New York, date unknown, but probably early 1800s. Josiah married Sarah Bohall, born in Ohio, date unknown. I can find no evidence of this family prior to 1890. They were probably in NY since William Wyatt Dexter states in 1919 that he'd been living in NY for 65 years. Any help with this family would be wonderful. I have William Wyatt Dexter's family traced forwared if anyone is interested in them.

My family line is also available in a few spots. My William was an English immigrant, a child when they came over in 1856. Family settled in West Lafayette, IN. William was one of the brothers to my gggrandfather, George James Dexter. I believe my records reflect most of his life spent in Indiana, so I'm sure this is not the William you're checking out. To all, good luck in your searches. Also, consider joining the DEXTER-L list at Rootsweb. Sometimes the queries get things going there too, and consider starting your own DEXTER lineage page on Facebook. See you all around!

Nottingham Dexters - Ellen Dexter

Hello I am new to this site. My mother is the daughter of Ellen Dexter who was the youngest of 13 children from Nottingham England. My grandmother, Ellen Dexter Adams wa widowed in 1943 in Birmingham after the city was bombed by German planes. My mother who was only 11 years old at the time, and orphaned as a result, does not know exactly how old her mother was but believes she was about 50 years old at the time. Meaning she would have been born sometime around 1893. Her mother also had a sister named Fanny who was about 3 years older (possibly the 11th born). In any regard, my mother now living in Canada is almost 80 has no real understanding of her heritage. If related to your line, any information you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Richard

Yes according to the records we have Thomas Dexter and Sarah Morris married in 1854. Thomas's dob 1828, Sarah's 1832. They had three sons George 1863, Thomas 1855, Joseph 1860. There was also a daughter Elizabeth 1858 who died age 5. In the 1851 census Thomas is shown as a blacksmith living at 13 The village, Kingston upon Soar (aged 22). In the 1861 census he is living at No.7 The Village with his wife Sarah and three children one of whom is Joseph aged 6 mths. The others are Thomas aged 5 and Elizabeth aged 3. The three boys George Thomas and Joseph were given employment and trained on Lord Belpers Estate. Thomas who became Louisa Goodey's husband was a crapenter, Jospeh went to America and George went Blue Coat school from the army to be a PE teacher.

Does this help with your family tree to tie up with ours?

Sandra

Hi Pam,

I am related through Edward and Mary Hill as well, but my GG-grandfather was William, their oldest son. William had twin sons, Alfred and William (1865) and Alfred was my G-grandfather. Alfred and his wife Emma (Thomas) moved to Hamilton, Ontario where their youngest son Charles was born in 1908 (my grandfather).

I honestly haven't done a lot of research on the Dexters because another member of my family had done a bunch of research already, but I can tell you that none of us have gotten any further than Samuel in 1798 (yet). Someday, I hope to change that! I'd love to see old portraits/photographs if you or anyone if your family has any. The only old photo I have of my G-grandfather Alfred Dexter (b1865) is attached to my public tree. As far as we know, it's the only existing photo of him and I am not aware of any of his parents or other family members.

Warm Regards,
Shelley
