Can anyone help to look for my Grandmother Mary Elizabeth Smyth? She was born in Northern Ireland 15 Dec 1883. I can find no record in any searches. She lived in Ballycastle until 1903 when she emigrated to the states. She married Samuel F Diamond, also from Ballycastle. Mary's father was William Smyth and her mother was called Elizabeth. I would like to know Elizabeths maiden name. I believe the records are held in the south of Ireland. Mary had 2 sisters that are known, Jane and Ellen. There is also a possible brother called William. Ellen went to the states and Jane married Robert Leinster from Belfast. Any leads would be appreciated. Thanks

I have some information on the diamonds of Santa Rosa County. My Great Grandmother was Amanda Diamond who Married James Hardy Peacock.
I am also related to the McCurdy line you mentioned in that my Great Grandfather was George Washington McCurdy. I have information on this line as well.
Jennifer has a wonderful site on the McCurdy family of Florida that explains better the relationships within the family.
The Jay Historical Society has many items from the John Diamond family that talks about the people and the relationship in and around Jay Florida.
Please contact me if I can help in any way.
The last time I saw my cousin Arthur Diamond was in 1958 and he was about 11 or so then. So it's probably a different Arthur...he would have had to be 15 then. But it's interesting that your name is Paul...my cousin Arthur has/had a brother named Paul.

Anyway, I hope you find them! Or maybe you have by now....

Searching for my missing father and any relatives of his

My father went missing about 13 years ago. We lived in Ocklawaha FL through the late 90's but my parents worked in Ocala FL at the chiropractic clinic they owned- Diamond Chiropractic. My fathers name is Raleigh Baxter John Diamond Jr. My mothers name is Debra Ann Nemerovsky (married and changed her name to Jacobs). My fathers parents were Raleigh Diamond and Kathleen Causey (maiden name), both Native American decent. My grandmother was married to a famous Mexican boxer before my grandfather, but not sure about my grandfathers previous marriages if any. My father had relatives in the NC area- Garland and Milly, whom I think are still alive. And he also had many many cousins spread out- names like Fischer whom currently live in Ocala FL and whom I have contact with. From what my mother told me my dad was involved in some sort of tire shop in the Georgia area (?) at one point, and after my parents split i found addresses in Tamarac, FL, Orange Park FL, Boca Raton FL. He has a son whom I am in contact with John Diamond Jr. who lives in the Tennessee area and has a son. He also has three daughters from a first marriage Sandy Shorey, Michelle and Sherry. I am in contact with Sandy and Sherry but not Michelle, however I know Michelle has two or three kids..Cassandra and a little boy.. and her husband died a couple of years back. I dont really remember alot from growing up, and since my dad is gone I dont have any contact with his cousins or other relatives besides my brother and two sisters.. however any information on my dad would be great. I know there are some legal things that happened in the past, but Im not worried about that. I just want to know if he is alive and well. Ive gone as far as checking the State John Doe websites to see if something happened to him and he was never claimed. So please, please reach out to me if you have any info, pictures, or info on his family. Thank you :)

Possibly Flower's Cove, Nameless Cove, etc?
Not much documentation from NFLD since it only joined Canada mid 20th century and before that they were all pretty isolated communities.
Regards;
Duane
Nova Scotia

I didn't find out anything new about our Diamond ancestors over this summer break, but I'll be sure to let you know if I find out anything further. I think your reasoning about the Ireland Diamonds is very plausible. Hopefully we can find the baptismal records for the children at some point to confirm this, but I think you're right in identifying them as our Diamonds. All best wishes for now, David

Hello David,
Thanks for your reply. I first found Philip and Charlotte at the WDYTYA exhibition in London at the Irish stand. The archivist there was convinced they were mine partly because of Charlotte. The name was extremely unusual in Ireland at the time apparently. I looked on - www.rootsireland.ie myself to check but didn't pay and so saw only indices. When I went to Belfast and met the archivist he found the same record and gave me extra detail including Philip's mother's maiden name Burrus and that they were married in the Church of Ireland, and that Philip was baptised by Rev. Millstreet. I later checked this myself on Irish records. I haven't found primary evidence for the connection but am personally convinced. That's something for you to decide, I'm afraid. Sadly I understand that many Irish records were destroyed in the 1920's, so have not got round to checking baptisms of James and his siblings.
I am sure that the family were essentially RC and not C of E nor C of Ireland.
The reason for the marriage in St Thomas C of E was because the Catholic churches did not have a registrar. Catholics often went through a 'legal'Anglican marriage and then nipped over to their own church for a 'proper' Catholic marriage. Certainly James married officially in the Parish Church in the centre of Wigan but all his children were baptised in the RC church and 4 of his grand daughters went on to become Ursuline nuns.
Can you fill me in on your side from Charlotte and Robert Leech. Funnily enough, my father was called Robert and until now he's been the first one in the family. One of my sons was called Philip before I knew about the other Philips! That's about it for now.
Regards
Judith

Hello Judith,
Thanks so much for all this info. I tried looking for the same Irish records online but couldn't find them, did you find these records on a fee paying site? It would be great if we could find evidence that Philip and Charlotte's children (including my Charlotte) were baptised in the same area in Northern Ireland, then we would have a very good confirmation that this couple are our Philip and Charlotte - do you know whether the baptism records for the area survive, or maybe even are available online? It's interesting that this couple - if they are the same couple - seem to switch from Church of Ireland to Catholicism then back to the Church of England. I was talking to an Irish friend the other day and he said he thought it would be implausible that a working class Irish couple in the early 19th century would switch between denominations like this, particularly once in England, because they would effectively lose their (majority Catholic) immigrant Irish support group if they moved from Roman Catholicism to Anglicanism. Now I suspect that the Wigan Diamonds moved in immigrant Irish circles - certainly one of the two witnesses at my Charlotte Diamond's wedding was Irish, and I seem to remember that there were many Irish living in the same area of Scholes, Wigan, where the Diamonds lived in the early census years. So this would make it more likely, perhaps, that they did not switch from Catholicism to C of E but were Irish Protestants all along (unless their Irish friends/contacts were all Church of Ireland)? But if this is the case then the wedding in a RC church is surprising. But then maybe there was more switching between denominations, and less social consequences for doing so, than my friend thinks. Best wishes, David

Hello again Chris,
I think we must be connected. If we can connect our Napoleons and Hannibals we should be able to sort it out.
My first Napoleon was born on 4th Nov 1853 in Wigan. He was married to Ellen Holland in 1887 and they had 8 children, one of whom was called Napoleon born 13th Oct 1899 and another after his uncle, Hannibal born 26th Feb 1890. Napoleon senior died on 26th July 1923 at 142 Pecker's row, St Helens. His son James was the informant.
My first Hannibal died aged 20 on 9th Oct 1882.
Do these ring any bells? I hope so.
Judith
Hello again David,
I've had a little more time over the past couple of days.
I did go to Belfast and by chance met the archivist of St Anne's Cathedral where Philip was baptised into the Church of Ireland ages 8, possibly so that he could attend the Church of Ireland school. He and Charlotte were married in the RC church in Dundalk.
I am convinced that this is our Philip and Charlotte. Philip's parents were Philip and Elizabeth Burris, Church of Ireland in Belfast.(from Irish records online).
I have found another Diamond - Patrick on the 1841 census, a soldier in Canterbury, aged 35. I have a death cert. of Patrick died of cholera 26th Oct 1849 aged 44. and of Philip aged 86 also died of cholera a day later. The informant of both deaths was Edward Diamond.
Incidentally there is an Edward Diamond on 1851 census in the House of Correction Preston who was born in Drougheda. Speculation!!!!
At first I thought Patrick could be Philip's brother but now think he could be Philip's son - and possibly young Margaret's father. Her mother dies, Patrick joins the army and leaves her with grandparents. More speculation!!!!
Edward died on 29th June 1860. The informant was his wife Jane nee PORTER. They had 7 children, some of whom, twins were born in the workhouse and one who was blind. One was born in Acton's Houses. I have discovered that now Acton House is sheltered housing for old people and am looking into the possibility that it was originally the workhouse.
Finally, I'm sure you're right that your Charlotte is our family. They often seem to have lived next door to each other and sometimes one member moved in with another married sibling. I shall add her to my tree.
If I can add anything of interest about the Diamond's after James and Edward just let me know.
Regards
Judith

Hello Judith,
Thanks for your reply. That sounds very exciting about the Ireland connection, look forward to hearing about it! Sorry, the 'Charlotte and Robert' bit must have been a slip, I meant 'Charlotte and Philip'. (By the way, on an ancestry search of the 1841 census I only picked up *one* other Diamond in Wigan - a Morris Diamond, from foreign parts (probably no connection) - so I think the connection between the next door neighbours Robert & Charlotte, and Philip and Charlotte must be pretty certain.)I think I found Robert and Charlotte's marriage on the Family Search website first, and then I got a copy of the original marriage certificate from Wigan archives. In the meantime I tracked it down on ancestry too, and it is also on 'Lancashire Parish Clerk project' (I can send you the link if you like).
I'm very excited to hear what you have found out. All very best wishes,
David

Hello Chris,
For some reason I missed your posting in April. We must be related as I'm sure nobody else will have Napoleons and Hannibals in such numbers. I have TWO Hannibals and FOUR Napoleons!!
I'm a bit pushed for time just now as we have the grandchildren staying for a few days but I'll just tell you where I fit into the Diamonds. My father was ROBERT Diamond (bn 1908), son of CONSTANTINE and SARAH DANIELS.Dad's siblings were Jane, James, William (died young), Ann, Elizabeth, William aka Bernard, Joseph, Francis, and Edgar. Constantine's siblings were Charlotte, Elizabeth, Napoleon, Josephine, Louisa, Hannibal, Ellen and Julius Caesar.I have lots more info but nothing to match up with you. Maybe we can share.
I'll be in touch
Regards
Judith
