Am wondering, Fran, if you know parents or ancestral line of Hardin Dick? I have large database on DICK families who first arrived in PA from England c1700, then into VA, TN, GA, MO with my line ending up going West over Oregon Trail to west coast in 1840's but I do not have a Hardin Dick. Thanks for anything you can share.....Don Houk

Elizabeth Dick/James Flanigan 1867

Elizabeth Dick, dau of Hardin Dick, is on the 1870, Jefferson Co, IL census living in the household of Hardin Dick. In that same household is her husband, James Flanigan, and their two year old son, William. It is possible that William was born in IN. Hardin Dick and his family moved to Jefferson Co IL after living in Choctaw Co MS from abt 1839/40 to abt 1861. Before Choctaw Co, they were in ST Clair Co, Alabama.

I am seeking information regarding the DICK/FLANIGAN descendants. Thank you for your help.

Fran

Kenneth Dick from NH born approx 1938 - my dad

I'm looking to reconnect with my dad and half siblings. I know he lived in Littleton about 20 yrs ago.
I was born in Concord, NH in 1960.
If anyone knows where he is, if he's still living, please contact me. I know he had more children...Donna I think. And Brian.
My dad had a brother named David who was blind and crippled. I don't know what happened to him. I think he lived in a community for the blind in Colebrook NH possibly. I'm going off memories from 1969-71, so I doubt it's reliable.
I wish I could find my grandmother still living... She was Catherine Dick but she remarried the '70's and I can't remember her married name. She lived in Lunenburg, VT I think.

I am having a lot of problems finding relatives with the Dick family name. My Great Granfather was John Peter Dick and his was was Daisy Evans. I know John had a sister named Bonnie whose married name was Chapman. John's children are Bernice and Omer Bernard Dick. I found a birth record for a Bonnie Dick which says the parents names are J.W. Dick and Elizabeth Everet. I CANNOT find anything else. Please let me know if you have any information. It would be greatly appreciated.

Hilleary is my Great Uncle. I never met my Grand parents either as I was born 2 years after my Grandmother died, so I know how you feel.

Dear Patricia Malone: Your Great Grand-Father James W. Hilleary was my Great-Uncle(my Mother's, Mom's brother) My daughter and myself have been working on our families genealogy for awhile now. I have been to Schellsburg, Pa. to where your Great Grandparents are buried along with one of their sons Levi S. Hilleary who died in 1968. I know that James and Clara had a lot of children and we have been trying to get back to Bedford County Historical Society to find out where all of their children are. I'm guessing you are a daughter of one of their daughters, thus your last name Malone, correct? We have a lot of information on the Hilleary side, but we are running into a problem with information on your Great Grandfather's Mother "Rosa Belle Squire." My name is Mary Ann Eisler.
Hello: One of my Grandfather's was born 09 Nov 1880 in Rutherglen, Scotland and arrived in Canada (not sure from where) in 1904 at age 24. His name was William Milne Dick. I do not know his parents names or if he had siblings. He had a very interesting life and I'm not sure when he died or whether he returned to Scotland, Canada, Alaska or remained in the US. I even have a picture of him - he was quite handsome. Any ideas? Thanks. Pat Spencer.

Dick/Gall/Haddow

According to the OPR my gggrandfather was born Thomas, son of Thomas Haddow, farmer, Longhouse (Douglas) and Ann Dick in Uddington 22 Nov., 1797 and baptized 29 Nov., 1797. It does not say lawful son of Thomas Haddow.
In the Horse Tax Records of 1797/1798, I found a Ja? Haddow, Longhouse with a tax leveled for two horses. In the Horse Tax Records there are also three other Haddows listed in Douglas and Lesmehagow. I also found a William Dick of Lesmehagow of Hillslark with a horse tax leveled on him for one horse. I also found a Hugh Gall of Tower with a horse tax leveled on him for two horses.
Does anyone have knowledge of this Ja? Haddow of Longhouse, Ann Dick of Uddington, or William Dick of Tower?
Any suggestions would be welcome.

I am sorry. I do not have any relations to the Dick family. I just went to the cemetery and started taking pictures of the headstones so I could put them up on Ancestery and Find A Grave in the hopes that they would be useful to someone. I was staying right next to Bathgate, in Livingston. I am wondering if you might be able to contact the parish church or to go online to the National Archives of Scotland (I went there and it is incredible) www.nas.gov.uk or www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Good luck

Hi again!
Of course there are many many branches of the Dick family of Scotland with fascinating histories of how they have
become dispersed around the world,my own branch included.
The original question was how and when the name and Scottish family came into being.
I was just going back to records in Scotland dating back about 900 hundred years.
Regards Robert Dick

How interesting that Dick is a Dutch variation.

My Scottish Dick family came from Bellshill, Scotland to PA in the early 1900's.

My Dyke/Dike I have been able tot talk back to Spar Dike who was born in Virginia about 1809 and lived in Ohio.

So if i ever get far back enough, it will be interesting if I can connect the two.

It could very well be another branch of the Dick family. My ancestors that came to America from Scotland via Northern Ireland were coventers (protestants) and refused to take an oath to the King of England as a result many were imprisoned or sent to work the plantations in Northern Ireland. I think it was as much political as it was religious as the Popes supported the Catholic King of England when they were trying to conquer Scotland. Yes, I know that Albany had a very, very strong Dutch merchant presence who came from the Netherlands. However, My ancestors came a century later on the ship "The Earl of Donnegal". The Stone families married into the Dick family around 1860. Both the Maryland and Virginia Stone families were in America during the founding of Jamestown, VA...then were granted large land grants In Maryland (the Stones of Poynton Manor). William Stone was the 3rd colonial Gov. of Maryland and Thomas Stone, his relative, was a signer of the Constitution of the US. They began to move south through North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana to Texas and furthr west to New Mexico. These famillies were truly pioneers fightintg Indians and clearing wildernesses as they moved south and west. My ancestors, the Dick family moved from SC, KY, AL, AR,LA, and west to Texas. This information about the Dick families (my ancestors) was mostly from Bible records and Oral tradition handed down through the families not from a book that someone had researched and written. I would say that it is not first hand knowledge, but it is history within the famiy backed up by some census, lalnd records, and marriage record records found is family Bibles.

Not wishing to get into arguments but there is well documented, written evidence that the scottish Dick family came from Holland and their original name was De Dyke. They were catholics. William'de Dyck'was a magistrate and alderman of Edinburgh in 1296.They still had strong connections with the Netherland as they still had an important trading post there.

My Dick ancestor arrived on one of the prisoner ships which carried the coventers from Ireland. Many were purchassed as indentured servants. The ship, "The Earl of Donnegal" has passenger lists of many coventer Scots who were sent came from northern Ireland (Thus, the origination of the name Scot-Irish). My Dick ancestors arrived in South Carolina on these ships in the early part of the 18th century. I wish to inquire if anyone knows if a Charles Dick (proven ancestor) is a brother of Samuel and John Dick of South Carolina. They all arrived about the same time (mid 1700s) to South Carolina and lived in teh same area. They are all mentioned in records as serving in the American Revolutionary War. Some were on the same ship.

They may have orginated in Scotland and moved to the Netherlands because that country was tolerant of the their religion around the 14th century. The ones in Northern Ireland who were sent from Scotland to work on the plantationswere called coventers. They refused to take an oath the the king was supreme. They believed that on God was supreme.

Another interesting tid-bit is they were nearly all educated because they learned to read when the Bible was widely available in print. At the time many of the Catholic noblemen were unable to read.

They may have gone to the Netherlands before arriving in Scotland. From Scotland in the 16th century they were percuted for their protestant religion. Many were sent to plantations in Northern Ireland. From there most came to America. Others arrived in America from Canada.

Dick is a variation of the the name Dyke, which is Dutch.
