Mary Davis Dickenson/Dickinson b. 1725 daughter of Adam and Catherine Stevenson Dickenson

Samuel Brown son of Henry Brown and Mary Giles was born 1717 and died 6 Dec 1749. He married Mary Davis Dickinson daughter of Adam Dickinson and Catherine Stevenson (Stephenson) about 1743. She was born 1725 and died in 1770 August Co. VA. Sam and Mary had two sons Adam b. 1745 and William b. 1747 when he died in 1749 - she was pregnant with son Samuel born in 1750. In 1753 Mary Brown married Humphrey Madison cousin of President James Madison. They had one daughter Catharine born 1754. He was the sheriff of Allegheny County VA. He was killed by Indians in 1756 and step-sons Adam and William Brown were carried off by the Shawnees. Legend says that one boy later escaped. The other boy married an Indian girl and decided to stay with the Indians.
Mary Brown Madison married a third time to James Littlepage and bore him a son John Dickinson Littlepage b. 1760.

Does anyone know more about the sons of Samuel and Mary Dickinson Brown? Adam, William or Samuel?

Leslie Barker Thomas

Thank you so much for answering this post. It was a bit of a shock to get a response after so long. My grandmother was 7 when her father remarried and for some reason stayed with her grandparents so we never knew much about James after that. I would very much be interested in the pictures and documents you have. I also have some that I would be willing to share with you and your family. Please feel free to contact me at angeldevil28@hotmail.com

James Edward Dickenson was my grandfather. He married my grandmother in 1928 and had 3 sons, one died in infancy, the other at 16 years old. My father is the only surviving son from this marriage. I live in London, England but all of my family live in Warrington. My grandfather died in Dec 1935 from TB and is buried with his first wife, Mary Ellen Robinson and their 2 sons. My father was only four when his dad died so sadly has no memories of him. I have some documents and 2 photos relating to my grandfather. I hope this information has been of some help.

Josie Mae Dickenson, b. 1891 Texas

Josie [or perhaps Josephine] was a daughter of John Breckenridge Dickenson & Anna J. Smith. She had been married several times. It is said she had been married to a Bill Rollins, a B. J. McIntyre, and an H. D. Jackson. If anyone has any information about Josie and/or her husbands, I would very much like to hear from you. Would you know where she might have lived or died or if she had any children? Her name sometimes was spelled Dickinson or Dickerson.

I'm looking for any info on this Samuel Dickenson or Dickinson. I'm reasonably certain--reasonably, I said!--he married Margaret Passmore and they had a daughter, Rebecca Dickinson. I have her death cert. It shows she died 12-21-1899 in Michigan, and it gives this couple as her parents. It also shows her last name as Grubb, which I have seen in one entry on rootsweb as if it were her middle name. She--Rebecca--is my ggm, so Sam and Margaret must be my gggf and gggm. Hence my interest in them. I've tracked down some info on Margaret but I'm drawing a blank on Sam and their daughter.

Re: Frances "Fannie" Dickenson (1758-1796-Russell Co. VA)

John and Judy: Here’s a bit that I have on Thomas Johnson and Fanny. Thomas Johnson and family by first wife were from Maryland and settled in Elk Garden in the upper end of Russell County, and was a neighbor of my ancestor, John Ervin. His son William by first wife married Sarah Ervin, dau of John. Thomas’ second marriage (in Russell) was to the widow Fanny Dickenson Scott. Thomas was a large land holder and trader, and besides his holdings in Elk Garden, he also owned tracts in the Castle's Woods area. It is surmised that is how he came to meet Fanny of the Castle’s Woods Dickensons. Interestingly, on 22 July 1790, Thomas Johnson bought land (Wallens Ridge, Powell Valley - later Lee Co) from James Scott, brother and heir of Archibald Scott, Fanny’s deceased first husband. According to the Virginia historical marker, marking the vicinity of her grave in Elk Garden, Fanny died in 1796. I think it is based on the notes of the Rev. Asbury who wrote that she died in 1796 and was buried at Hayter’s Gap (at top of Clinch Mtn. above Elk Garden). (Lee Co. marker also says she died May 1796). Thomas Johnson moved to Carter County, TN, before 1805 at which time he sold 416 acres of his Elk Garden holdings to John Ervin. The deed listed him as “of Carter Co.” at that time. Johnson County, TN, which was formed from Carter County, was named for this Thomas Johnson, and his Will is recorded in Johnson Co. Based on the above sketch, it doesn’t ring true that Thomas and Fanny lived in NC nor had a dau born there. I have Mary and Elizabeth as their children, but no source listed. (There were other Johnsons in Russell who were from NC).

Judy,

I have names of at least some of the children of Fannie Dickenson and Thomas Johnson. I have not attached a source to this information and provide it as help in further research as opposed to being from a primary source.

I have Fannie Dickenson and Thomas Johnson's marriage date as 1787. This does then make it a question concerning when their daughter, Frances Johnson was born. I have her DOB as 1785 in NC. two years befor the marriage date I have for Fraqnces and Thomas. I show that daughter Frances Johnson married Richard Price Sr. They are in the 1850 Russell Co., VA. census shown in HH# 967, according to what my notes indicate. Other children's names are Mary Johnson b. 1788, who married Benjiman Sewell and moved to Claiborne, TN. Henry Dickenson Johnson, born 1792 who married 1st Dicey Wilson and later Lavina Peoples (Peeples?). It appears he married both women in Carter Co., TN (from which Johnson Co., TN was later formed)in 1814 and 1825 respectively. daughter Elizabeth Johnson, born May 22, 1792 and died June 22nd 1880, who married George W. Johnson. George's father was the brother of Thomas H. Johnson, making George W. his nephew. I have they were married in 1814 in Russell Co., VA.

If you have information to add or corrections to my notes, please let me know. Please review my other surnames for connections. All from SW VA and Eastern TN.

Have found her grave at Norwood Cemetary in S/E London. Died 7 December 1963 aged 76. That makes her born in 1887 but marriage cert and 1911 census says it's 1891.

Can anyone help

Thanks

Linda

Nathaniel Dickenson of PA

Does anyone know of Nathaniel Dickenson of 1800, living in Robeson Twp Berks Co Pa. He purchased 55 acres and house of Daniel Garred (Jarrett)his neighbor? It was the sale of David,s estate in 1801. His descendents lived there for several years. I have the chain of title for the property and also a platt showing the division and sale of the farm at that time. I also have a photo of a two story stone house located there.
