Looking for parents William Dicker's wife, Johanna Toms who were married about 1878 Plymouth, England. Immigrated to canada approx. 1885.
Now that I have found, Williams Mother died when he was fairly young, 6 years from what I can find. I wonder if a Thomas and Mary Dicker cared for him as a child and that is where the misinformation came from.
Marriage Certicate found and now on line for William Dicker & Johanna Toms. The Toms family is still a mystery waiting to be solved

Thank you. Rowland Dicker has been a god send and lives in England where he has access to the actual records. It seems William's father married twice. Both ladies had a last name of Rogers or variation of Rogers. I have updated the information on my site. Many thanks for all your help as I searched to find the truth. Number one thing I have learned from all this research over the years is to document, document, document and follow the information you find, not what you think you will find ;-)

You are correct It should be William Dicker married to Joanna Toms.
William Dicker died from a kick to the head with in days of my mother's birth. She was born Oct 28, 1919. William died Nov 3 1919. I found his death ceritficate. It states his father's name as Thomas Dicker and his mother's name as Mary Flowers. Marriage Certificate now on line. The marriage certificate list Williams father as William not Thomas. Since this is information that would have been provide by William when he married, we now assume the information on the death certificate to be an error

Moved to newick between 1851 and 1861. Appears that the story handed to me by my father that we all were based on Upper & lower Dicker near lewes may not be true!!
Chris Dicker

Hello

I am working on the family genealogy.

My branch of the Dicker family appears in the 1790 US Census and living in Winthrop Maine. A page from a book about the history of Winthrop indicates that William Dicker, an Englishman (as he is decribed) settled in town. That he died on 2 Apr 1827 at age 87. So, by my wonderful math skills, he was probably born in England in 1840. HA!!! William did own land in Winthrop (a deed describes the parcel)

He was married to a woman named Ann (Maiden name unknown at this time). They had 5 children. William Jr., CHarles, James, Hannah and Esther.

WIlliam Jr appears to be my ancestor. Birth year is approximately 1788 and he married Sarah Burnham in 1808.
They had 8 children: John Alden, Anna Wells, Sukey Prescott, Thomas (born 27 Feb 1815), Louney, Henry Frost, Emeline and Catherine.

I am interested at this time in Thomas.

So to recap.

William Dicker, DOB abt 1740 in England, don't know where in England or how he arrived in Maine.

Ann Dicker, would like to know her maiden name.

William Jr, would like to know DOB.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you
Frank
Hi Martyn. I see that your branch of the Dicker family goes back to Sussex. My family has Dicker's on my father's line as well as that of my Mother-in-law. You have been contacted by my brother Rod about 'our' Dickers - James (1819 - 1903), who appears to have moved from around Exeter to live in 'London' most of his life. We are stuck with his father Philip (1802 - 1883), who was born in Crediton according to his census entries. But parish entries are proving elusive. My wife's Dickers lived in Hampshire forever - Pamber back to 1792 and Kingsclere before that (Walter was Christened there 13 Nov 1688, and his Mum and dad were Walter and Joanna). So, do we have any information to share? Best wishes, Terry

Hello Gwen. Thank you for your reply. There is always a risk in family history research of making a wrong connection. In your case, I think we should try to find some good evidence to connect the Mabel I mentioned and your grandmother. Here are a few questions in order of importance. 1. Did you know your grandmother? If so, where did she live and when did she die? Do you have any other information about her? 2. Do you know of any of her brothers or sisters (your great-uncles and great-aunts)? Do you know any of their names? 3. Was there a brother who died in WW1? 4. Is the location of Croydon meaningful to you in terms of family history? 4. Any other information at all?
If we can make the connection, I do have a good deal of interesting information to send you.
By the way, it would be better to correspond via our regular e-mail addresses rather than this website. If we do this, it will be possible for me to send attachments including census entries which will answer your question about Mabel's siblings. But we do need to make that connection first.
I look forward to hearing from you.
All best wishes, Martin Baxter, Deal, Kent U.K.

The best 'match' I can find for your grandmother is a Frances Mabel DICKER, born in 1902 in the Croydon (Surrey) area. She is listed as 'Mabel' in 1911, daughter of George and Fanny Louisa DICKER, living at Croydon with her parents and siblings. She died, apparently unmarried, in 1976 in Croydon. I know this is not Fulham, but I can't find anything relevant there. The important question is: do you have a copy of your father's birth certificate? This should give his mother's name as she reported it in 1924, and will help in your search.
I am very happy to correspond further if it could help. My e-mail address is martin@dmbaxter.f2s.com
All best wishes, Martin Baxter.

I suspect that Susanna may have been Susanna Bridger. This was the only Susanna born in Ringmer at the right time (1670) who was not subsequently recorded (IGI) as marrying anyone. Also Walter & Susanna called their first daughter Jane which was Susanna Bridger's mother's name.

William Dickers UK to USA

Would like to find out if possible William's UK origins. I have the following New York City census info for him:

1850, Age 26, Rigger, England.
Married to Ellen (born 1830, NY).

1860, Age 33, Rigger, England.
Married to Catherine (born 1837, IRE) maiden name Beechinor.
With son Joseph (born 1856, NY) who could have been son of Ellen or Catherine.

Birth from the above between 1824-27. Appears to have died 1860-70 as not listed 1870 census and Catherine has re-married. Arrival in New York must be prior to 1850 - no idea when he married Ellen - if age 16 when married then 1840-43 is the earliest period for this but feel it more likely to be later.

Have got only one possibility of arrival in USA - on a ship's manifest dated 1836 with family - father Isaac Dickerson (born 1793) - appears to be from Yorkshire but the handwriting is very difficult to read - definitely a Shire though.

Any suggestions welcome.

Dicker: Surrey and Hampshire 1750-1800

Hello readers!

As a researcher into the descendents of my 5x great grandparents John and Mary Stephens of Wimbledon and London, 1786-1873, I am very interested in the Dickers of Wimbledon - specifically Thomas Dicker who died in late 1793 or early 1794.

Thomas Dicker gives his name to two of John and Mary's children - Tamzen Dicker Stephens, and my 4x great grandfather Thomas Dicker Stephens, both christened in Wimbledon in 1788 and 1796 respectively.

It's not clear whether Thomas Dicker is related by blood to John Stephens or his wife Mary Fellows (birth name unknown - she was a widow when she married John). However, he is present at John and Mary's wedding at St Giles Cripplegate on 13 May 1786, and signs as a witness.

Thomas Dicker's will describes him as a "Gentleman". He leaves behind named benefactors including his wife Ann, a daughter Mary, a daughter-in-law Rachel (his son Thomas had died by this time), a brother William whose location is not mentioned, and another brother Stephen, yeoman of South Warnborough, Hampshire. My 5x great grandfather John Stephens, a gardener who died in Wimbledon in 1802, is an executor and benefactor of his will.

Thomas Dicker must have been a very significant figure for John and Mary. Who was he? Given John and Mary's marriage licence records them as both living in the parish of St Giles Cripplegate in 1786, it seems Thomas may have been the reason John ended his days down in verdant Wimbledon. Was John or Mary related by blood, were they employees of Thomas Dicker - what's the connection?

I am very keen to find out more about Thomas Dicker and his family and the connection with my Stephens/Fellows ancestors. I welcome other researchers' thoughts.

Cheers, Grant

I've just checked the censuses for 1861 and 1871 and there is a family in Clewer that matches Margaret DICKER (sister to Thomas (1843) of the subject) born in Westminster, Middlesex in 1841, marriage to Thomas HUGHES in 1860. They have children John William Hughes (1854), Emma Sophia (1862), Mary Agnes (1866) and Alice Jane (1867). Does this match your family?

Cheers Sue Knight

Hi Anthony
Did the William DICKER who married Lucy Williard have a son called William?
I have a possible William born abt 1748 that I am sure is a direct decendant of mine. He married Elizabeth ? & their children (I think) were Lucy 1775, Elizabeth 1778, William 1780, Mary 1782, Lucy 1783, Ann 1787, Fanny 1789 and perhaps another son John who died 1796.
According to the records, there were a few DICKER families in & around Lewes so it gets a bit more difficult when you're back this far to prove the links. I'd love to hear from you further.
Kind regards
Barbara Williams

I have a Walter Dicker who died in Chiswick in 1796 - no relation, just have his will as part of a piece of local history research. It is PROB 11/945 and you can download it for £3.50 from the TNA website.

He does not refer to a wife but leaves bequest to a large number of people in the City of London and at Hampshire addresses. No mention of Lewes.

He occupied a house belonging to John MacCulloch, a wealthy local resident - I have not yet identified exactly where he lived, but he had been there long enough to want to make local bequests to the poor, to a school for poor children and to some neighbours.
Hello Sue. Thomas was baptised at Clewer, Berkshire, son of John & Sophia DICKER of Dedworth Green, carpenter, 1 Jan 1843. I believe his birth was not registered at the GRO. I have searched my database and there is no other 'Thomas DICKER' likely to be confused with yours. His siblings were baptised either at Clewer or Bray. The Bray parish register shows the marriage of John as follows: John DICKER, bachelor of this parish married Sophia BLOWFIELD, spinster of this parish, 24 Feb 1828. Witnesses: John BLOWFIELD & John BOWYER. I don't have any information about Gilbert DICKER senior, apart from the comment by Ruby CONNOR that "Gilbert and Harriet DICKER emigrated to the USA late 19th century from The London area". Unfortunately, I have not been able to find out more. Good luck with your searches. Martin Baxter, Deal, Kent U.K.

Hi,
I have had a look at what information I have to hand, which, unfortunately is not much but is as follows:-
John Dicker born approx 1796 Oakley Green Windsor.

I have found a record for the death of a John Dicker(s)
March quarter of 1857 reference Cookham 2c 263.
Sophia Dicker is shown as a widow in the 1861 census so this possibley ties in.

Sophia Dicker was still showing as living at 3 St Andrews Cottages, Clewer, Berks aged 79 in the 1881 census.
source FHL film 1341322 pro ref RG11 piece 1325 folio 48 page 20.
Sophia's maiden name was Blowfield the 1881 census shows just 131 Blowfields in England and only 5 in Berkshire.

I think her nephew might have been a William Blowfied a Blacksmith/whitesmith and general smith shown in the 1881 census Bray, Cookham, Berkshire source FHL film 1341319 PRO Ref RG11..Piece 1316 folio 113 page 46.

John and Sophia Dicker's daughter Jane born 5 March 1838, was registered in Bray, Cookham, Berkshire so it ties in.

1st of January 1869 Louisa Jane Dicker, Gilbert Dicker's 1st daughter was born. At this time the address registered was 1 Queens Road East, Chelsea, Middlesex, SW London.

August 1873 Emily Dicker - my grandmother was born the address shown is 86 Pimlico Road. Chelsea, SW London. (Pimlico Road still exists).

In the 1881 census Gilbert Dicker, His wife Harriet nee Duke, with their two daughters Louisa and Emily are shown to be living at 75 Kinglake Street, Newington. source FHL film 1341123 pro ref RG11 piece 0543 folio 48. Gilbert's occupation is shown as Chandlers Shop Keeper.

Louisa Dicker and her brother Gilbert (whose details I do not have to hand emigrated to America along with one of my femail Bell(possibley Florence) ancestors. I do not have Gilbert Juniors birth details to hand at the moment.

I am sorry I cannot give you any information on Thomas or any of the other Dicker's apart from Sophia and John but I hope this helps locate Thomas as it is obvious the majority of Dicker's did not stay in the Windsor, Berkshire area but moved to central London. If you too have any further information on the Dicker's I would love to hear it as you are the first person with what seems related Dicker lineage I have been in contact with.
All the best. Linda
