Re: Lillian J. (Dickey) McJunkin - Butler, Pennsylvania

Genweb for Butler County, PA lists a delayed birth certificate for Lillie Jane Dickey (file number 2431), with a link to request the full information.

FamilySearch gives the marriage date of Roy McJunkin and Lillian Dickey as 9 Jun 1904. Lillian’s father is listed as Jos. Dickey. The question is what is the full version of Jos.

In the 1900 US Federal Census, 18 year old Lilly Dickey is listed in Butler Ward 1, Butler, Pennsylvania, as a servant in the household of Robert Grossman. Her birth date is May, 1883.

In the 1880 US Federal Census in Cherry, Butler, PA there is a 24 year old Joseph Dickey with his 19 year old wife Martha and 10 month old daughter Allis A. Dickey. Joseph Dickey is in dwelling 200. John Black is in dwelling 201. John Black is also in the 1870 US Federal Census in Cherry, Butler, PA with his family, including his 10 year old daughter, Martha.

Alice A. Dickey is listed as the wife of Ira Eddy Henderson in a family tree on Ancestry. Her parents are not given. Alice and Ira appear together in Butler, PA census records.

I cannot find a fit for the above Joseph Dickey in any previous or subsequent census records. Interestingly, I find a Josiah Dickey, who is a fit by age, in the 1860 and 1870 census records in his parent’s home in Washington, Butler, PA. The Henderson family tree lists Alice A. Dickey’s birthplace as Washington, Butler, PA. I cannot find a census record for Josiah Dickey in 1880 but do find him in 1900 and 1920 in Butler Ward 2, Butler, PA as a widower. I think that Jos. is Josiah and that Joseph is an error that is also supposed to be Josiah.

I hope these clues help. I am not related.
I just always wondered about the Kansas thing. That was a long treacherous trip in those days, and I wondered if there was something that drew them to that area. At that time, that was pretty much the prairie and not settled.

Please feel free to tell your cousins about me. My name is Jayne Small, and I live near Walton. If they email me, I'll be glad to provide phone number.

Keep me informed of any new information you discover.

Maybe you can fill me in on something that has always puzzled me. Why on earth did they emigrate to Kansas in the 1880's when it was such an underdeveloped area? Do you have any idea about that?

Also, are there still relatives near Peru? I'm only about 15 miles from Peru.

She was the great, great grandmother of my late husband, whose grandmother was Elizabeth (Libby) Rairigh who married Frederick Coblentz.
Hello,

I hope you are still active with the genealogy. I just ran into your post. I am a descendant of the William Dickey who settled in macon county and died in 1832. I have been trying to definitively discover William's lineage. My mother and grandmother were accepted into DAR but they have since blocked any additional descendants due to new guidelines. They are requiring additional proof as to his lineage. Curious if you have discovered any more family connections in regards to the Dickey's in this time frame. Your help would be greatly appreciated. my email address is cwalor@gmail.com. Thanks in advance.

I'm refreshing this topic in hopes that someone has discovered some new information through their research.
Samuel Dickey (b.1787 d.1851)was married to Esther Simonton (b.1786 d.1856) in Washington Co. PA in 1811. The mystery is around Samuel's parents, Samuel and Martha. I have land deeds, between father and son, but not the original grant which may have come from Gen. Washington in lieu of payment during the Rev. War in 1776. Looking for any information (land, immigration, etc.) on father Sam or Martha.
Thanks, Tom

Thomas Dickey - 1790-1878 - Soldier in War of 1812 and Settler of the Sufferers Land in Ohio

I have posted a review of "History of the Fire-Lands," published in 1879 by WW Williams on the "Firelands History Website": http://firelands.wordpress.com.
Included in this book is a biography and portrait of Thomas Dickey, a soldier in the War of 1812 and settler in Ridgefield Township of the Firelands of Northwestern Ohio. Also included in the book is an illustration of his residence and portraits of him and his wife, Abigail (nee Morse) De Witt.
The Firelands, or Sufferers' Land, was set aside for "Sufferers" in Connecticut whose homes were burned by the British during the American Revolution. It includes present day Huron, Erie, Ottawa, and Ashland Counties in Ohio.
My post includes a short synopsis of "History of the Fire-Lands" and the Table of Contents with links to the free on-line book's histories, biographies and illustrations of the pioneers and their families.
I invite you to check out this interesting biography of Thomas Dickey and other pioneers of the Firelands.
