Update:
Arthur & Hannah Mary Stoeszel Dickhut's Son Wilbur L. Dickhut was the one that mysteriously disappeared sometime after 1922 and possibly in the 1930's. He graduated from Maplewood High School, Camp Point, Adams, IL c1913. He allegedly had married a Mary Fisher (Fischer?)from Camp Point, IL after 1913. Mary rented out the farm after Wilbur's disappearance.

Most of this information was gleened from a cousin and a family friend of the Stoeszel's.

DICKHUTs in Illinois

The other messages on this board are a couple of years old, but I believe I am related to you Dickhut descendants. Do any of you have new info? Charles Dickhut was my gggrandfather, born in PA in 1833 to Christian Gottlieb DICKHUT and Johanna SCHMIDT, both from Germany. They moved to Quincy around 1835. Charles and Christian went to CA in the gold rush of 1849, returning in 1856. Were they the first DICKHUTs in the Quincy area? Did other relatives follow them? Do you know about family gravesites in Quincy? Do you know any more about their roots in Germany?

Henry G. Dickhut

I am trying to research my father's family. His grandfather was Henry G. Dickhut, whom I have found on a census in Brookfield Mo when he was 40. I know that he is from one of the Dickhut families of Quincy, Illinois, as I have in my possession a family photo album with 25 or 30 formal photographs of various family, some at studios in Quincy and others in front of a home. They are very old. Unfortunately, they are not marked as to whom they are photos of, except those taken in Brookfield of Henry G, his wife, Elizabeth, and sons, Russell,M. Clarence, and Lloyd E. I have found out quite a bit of info on the Dickhuts' of Quincy, but have been unable to link Henry to which of them he belongs. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Dickhut/Dickhuth

Arthur DICKHUT b. August 1863 married Hannah Mary STOESZEL, b November 23, 1868 in Adams Co., IL on February 1, 1893. They are listed in the 1900 Adams Co., IL Census in Columbus Township with a son, Wilbur b. February 1894 in Illinois. Arthur DICKHUT is shown as being born in Illinois with his mother and father born in Germany.

Arthur (and possibly son Wilbur) mysteriously disappeared sometime in the early 1900’s and allegedly, I understand from relatives that there were several newspaper articles in Adams Co., newspapers regarding their disappearance. Some years later, Arthur was found dead in a New Jersey residence or apartment and New Jersey law-enforcement apparently attempting to locate relatives or next of kin sent some old “school papers” they had found to law-enforcement officials or a school (probably in the Columbus/Camp Point area) in Adams Co., IL. Subsequently, it was found that Arthur had changed his last name to DICK and the mystery unraveled with more articles in local newspapers.

Wondering if any DICKHUT followers had ever run across any of this information. Also the names of Arthur DICKHUT’s mother and father.

Hannah Mary STOESZEL is the twin sister of my grandmother Katherine Elizabeth STOESZEL FINGERLIN.

Searching for any newspaper articles is very hard when you don’t have dates. Thanks in advance, Don - Texas
I have since discovered that Arthur DICKHUT committed suicide by shooting himself on their family farm near Camp Point, IL on 2/11/1911. As to the dissappearance to NJ, I have not been able to substantiate any of that. The newspaper article regarding Arthur's death and inquest do not mention his leaving home previously. Should you find the newspaper copy of Hannah Mary Stoeszel Dickhut's death in 1949, I sure would appreciate a copy of it. Wilbur was listed in the 1920 Census on the farm with Hannah. I do not have anything additional on him.
If you would like a copy of Arthur's death please email me direct a pmdslocum@aol.com.

My information is slightly different from yours, but is obviously for the same people. I cannot quote the sources of my information, as my notes are not very organized.

Arthur DICKHUT b. 22 Sep 1863 IL & d. 8 Feb 1911 IL married on 1 Feb 1893 IL to Hannah M. STOESZEL b. 23 Nov 1868 IL & d. 20 Sep 1949 IL. My records show them in Columbus, IL 1893-1897, and in Camp Point, IL in 1911 (when Wilbur was a HS student), with burial at Evergreen Cemetery in Camp Point.

I am not familiar with the other family history in your message.

I assumed son Wilbur died before his mother (as I probably have her obituary somewhere), but that may be incorrect.

Arthur DICKHUT's parents were Johann (John) Andrew Adolph DICKHUT (b.13 Oct 1823 in Muehlhausen, Thuringia, Germany, d. 22 Feb 1899 IL) and Augusta MEUSELWITZ (d. 29 Sep 1885 IL), married 5 Mar 1857 Adams Co, IL. This was John's second marriage, and he had 9 children by Augusta and 4 by his first wife, Margaret MAUS.

I am a descendant of a brother of John's.

Susan, I was looking at some old family group sheets that I had written infor about Dickhut's from Quincy Illinois. There was a Henry Dickhut, born about 1850 in the 1870 Census of Ward 2, Quincy Illinois, head of household was William Dickhut age 60, wife Catherine-both born in a foreign country, household #53, real estate $30,000.00, personal $20,000.00. Besides Henry there was Eddy-17, Phillip-13, and Cary-16. Do you think this might be your Henry? Please e-mail
