I have a Margaret Mckellar married to a Duncan Clark/e who died in Benalla, Vict. approx 1876. Seeking any information on her: marriage, children.

Also seeking her connection with William McKellar of Benalla and Lima Station , Vict. and any information on him.

I have seen mention of Margaret having found her way to Australia via Canada. I also have seen her son in law (John) Charles Dickens as being friends with William McKellar (in postings about their run-in with bush ranger Harry Power). Also have Margaret Mckellar's daughter Elizabeth married to a man named Black. Wondering if it is the partner of William Mckellar (or his son). Would appreciate a look-up on that Elizabeth Black nee. Clark/e.

(John) Charles Dickens named his son William McKellar Dickens (my ggrandfather).

Grateful for any information unwinding this...

I'm so glad if it has been helpful! I tend to do family history in bursts (often when I am avoiding doing something else I am supposed to be doing) but I love helping other people with their family history. The Dickins family have been quite frustrating. As you can imagine I was so excited when I read the family tree information in the History of Church Preen, but since then I have signally failed to find John Dickins's birthplace. Everywhere I look there is a big hole where JD should be. I went to the Public Record office at Kew to look at the records for his regiments... but either there would be a gap for the "Di"s or a gap in the years I needed. There he was - gone. He IS in the Army Lists, thank goodness, or I would begin to wonder about whether he actually existed!

John Dickins was in Colchester around the turn of the century, and so his first few children were baptised in Essex. His first wife died, and he then remarried in Castle Church Stafford, although the first few children of that marriage were born in St John's Deritend, in Birmingham. Then he moved to Trysull, and finally to Forton.

His second wife, Ann Campbell, seems to have been pretty well connected. Her sister married John St George and has a large memorial with her husband, and mentions in various landed gentry lists. I *think* that Francis Campbell Dickins (who was definitely another son of John Dickins) may have had a case in chancery relating to his mother's family, as his children are described as wards in chancery on one of the census returns. I actually tried to read the chancery documents - which were about the size of a hearth run and many pages long! It's no longer cases took years to come to court.

Contact my in a private message and we can exchange emails, and I will let you have everything I can find for your Dickins and mine.
bws
Fee

Your blog has been a godsend for our search! I can't thank you enough for all your efforts. It has meant a lot to my mother and I to learn more about our family history. It took a while to connect our Dickens with your line, since our William Mckellar Dickens, son of Charles John Dickens, used a different birthdate and had his parents wrong on his 2nd marriage certificate, but we finally confirmed the connection this week. (he married a much younger second wife so perhaps the mistake on his marriage certificate was not accidental...)

Hello cousin!

I have a LOT to tell you about this family, as I have been researching them for a long time. I will invite you to my family tree, and make sure I have updated it. I do quite a lot of research offline, and so have to revise my online family trees from time to time.

John Dickins born circa 1772 had at least 11 children (that I have found so far) with two marriages and at least four different locations.

Nice to make contact with you :-).
Fee

Still searching after all these years for a birthplace for John Dickins born 1772. He was a soldier and farmer, and I have an enormous amount of information about him and his many children, mostly born/baptised at St John's Deritend, Birmingham, Warwickshire or Woodford Grange, Trysull, Staffordshire. These include my great-great-great grandfather George Dickins, baptized 1824 in Trysull.

His son Robert Archibald Dickins carried on farming in Trysull until his death in 1893. He had one son who predeceased him. Other members of the family - Francis Campbel Dickins, Henry Fowler Dickins, George Dickins, had multiple children, and I have details on them all.

Anyone have a stray John Dickins born 1772? The other areas he was associated with are Shropshire, Chelsea and eventually Forton in Staffordshire, which is where he died in 1851.
Thanks!

UPDATE

Florence L. Dickens father was Ellsworth but he went by the name Edward E. Dickens.

Edward worked for the RailRoad, Great Northern RR.

Annie Elizabeth Beird Dickens was Florence's mother.

Florence married Harry William Davis. I believe they married in LaValle, Wisc. That is where Florence was born in the year 1898.

Florence and Harry had the following children.
Leonard William Davis died and buried in OHIO.
Daniel Elsworth Davis died in Oregon.
Hazel H. Davis, married an Alfred Reule. They lived in Bismarck, North Dakota. Hazel is buried there, but Alfred is not. I think Alfred was buried in Washington State, where his son Ron Ruele was stationed, at or near Fort Lewis.
Harry Junior Davis, born 1928, is the only one still with us, all other children of Flo and Harry William Davis have passed on.
William John Davis passed on while living in Idaho. Uncle Bill was called "Willie" when he was a kid. I have a few pictures with that info.
August Isreal Davis was also called "Chuck" while serving in the Koreon War. Photos to this effect. Given name at birth was August Isreal Davis.

All children of Flo and Harry William were born in Miles City, Montana, except for thier first born.

Phillip Dickens also had a son George W. Dickens, born about 1823/ March, or Sept., depending on source.
This Geo. W. Dickens, Brother is Elsworth Dickens, yet Geo. W. Dickens also had a son Ellsworth E. Dickens. I decipher these two E Dickens' by spell the first one (Geo. W. brother)with one L, "Elsworth", and spelling Geo. W.'s son, "Ellsworth E.", the second one with two Ls. This E.E. Dickens is my great grandfather, he also went by the name of ED. Edward or E.E. Dickens(ins) married Elizabeth A. Bierd, July 3, 1881. This couple had a daughter, Florence Dickens born April 3, 1898. Florence married Harry Davis on April 9, 1916. Harry William Davis was born in Baldwin, WISC. June 20, 1890. This grandfather is my main focus at the moment.
Sometime between 1916 and 1920 they moved to Miles City, Custer Co., Montana.
I have a paper that says Harry Davis was from Madison, Wisc. Can anyone help me her with this.
I need a search for the birth of Harry William Davis. I need to know whom his parents were so I can follow back in time. I have been searching 20+ years.
Harry is, I heard from Ivy? that Harry is registered WWI. (I need to speak with IVY. IVY please email me.) jfkcrsd@yahoo.com (Where did that info come from and may I access it on the web? If it is available?)
Thank You very much for the info sent aleady, for I think we have been in touch before about these Dickens?
Have a Great Day.
well I just lost what I was working on, so here goes again.

On Florence L. Dickens Davis Johnson, born 3 April 1898, Wisc. Where In Wisc? Died Spokane, Spokane County, Washington 3 Nov. 1961. This Info and follow'g are from her Funeral Record. I go by the Cemetery so often that one day I stop'd and pick'd this paper up. I also have Grandma Florence's death certificate.

Her husband is list'd as Floyd Johnson, family phone #FA8-7475. Her father's name Elsworth Dickins. Mother Unobtainable, I have found out it is Elizabeth Anna Bierd/Beard. Florence was a housewife whom owned her home. This paper list the Doctor, the Clergyman, the cemetery, Fairmont of Spokane, WA. Other stuff about cost and what have ya.

At the bottom is the list of family members known. They are: Husband, Floyd Johnson, unknown. Daughter, Hazel Reule, Bismark, N. Dakota. Sons, William J. Davis, Spokane, WA., Harry Davis Jr., Spokane, WA., Daniel E. Davis, Astoria, Ore., Leonard W. Davis, Dayton, Ohio, August (I.)Davis, Miles City, Custer Co., Montana. Florence died 3 Nov. 1961, so that is where these people were in time. Funeral record also says Florence had been in the Spokane community for 20 years, since 1941.

1941 is about the time that Grandma Florence and Grandpa Harry W. Davis were Divorced? Harry Junior Davis, born 14 June 1928(Miles City, MT), my father, son of Harry W. Davis, born 20 June 1890 (in Wisc?).

I have Birthdays for all Children of Harry and Florence. but if Harry Junior Davis was born 1928, he would have been about 13 years old.

Old enough to be put into a boys school, in Miles City. Dad has told me. His Brothers too went in other directions, Daniel lied about his age to get into the Military, Leonard was old enough(how old did one have to be???) Hazel went to Helena, Montana to a girls school. (I have a letter from someone to Aunt Hazel when she was getting ready to Graduate, @ 1945?).

Would like to make connection with Leonard William Davis Family!!! of Dayton, Ohio?

E-mail at jfkcrsd@yahoo.com also at genealogy.com

Thank You PEACE on EARTH Chris Kirsten

Thank you so much for the informative answer. I have cousins who also trace their name to Dickins but changed it, although they don't know the reason. They know Smith Dickins was the patriarch, and his sons changed the name when they formed Dickens Brothers LTD in London, which is still in operation today, run by Brian Dickens. I know back in those days it wasn't uncommon for the spelling of the name to change depending on who was writing it. I haven't been able to tie any of my family to a crest since I wrote that message, and find no evidence that they would have had wealth, estates, or position to have cause to have one. Thanks again!
Regards,
Bob Dickins

The Dickins family crest involves a swan. My grandfather passed to me one very old pre-postage stamp letter with this seal on the back.

The odd thing is that my family seem to have changed the spelling of their name to Dickens at the end of the 19th century in order to strengthen their claim to kinship with the author.

Charles Dickens meanwhile adopted the family crest without the least idea whether he was entitled to do so. He never proved the link he suspected with the Shropshire Staffordshire Dickins/Dickens family, and I don't think it has been proven to this day. There are a number of criteria for adopting a crest, which should be satisfied before you use it at all.

I am looking for information on Raymond DeWitt Dickins for a friend. He was her birthfather.

Felisha Kay Dickins was born 19 July 1969 in Humble, Harris, Texas to Elaine McDonald and Raymond DeWitt Dickins. She was the second child, the first was her brother, Guinn DeWitt Dickins, born 20 Feb 1968, also in Humble, Harris, Texas. There was a third child, a boy, probably born in 1971 or 1972. He was adopted by a different family than Felisha and Guinn.

Felisha is open to contact from Raymond, or another family member, if it is wished by Raymond, or someone in the family. She is extremely interested in family information, including any medical history that is available.

Felisha is now 37 years old with 4 children in N Central Texas.

If you can help, please contact me at gcb49@flash.net.

Thank you,
Gloria Baikauskas

Jane, I've been trying to find you but your email doesn't work. You responded to a post of mine in 1999. Our granparents were brother and sister, William Alva Dickens and Anna May Dickens.

Contact me as soon as you can. I've been meeting lots of other Dickens cousins and I have information for you...and some pictures...one of your grandfather and grandmother.

Penny

Re: Elsworth Dickins; his daughter, Florence L. Dickens, Davis

Hello Jane, Yes, yes, Elsworth is a son of Philip C. Dickens, and they are all from Wisc..
have we emailed eachother before? I am glad to hear from you again if that is the case.
I am in need of some info on Elsworth. I have had a time of it, trying to find anything. There is one other person, that I did recieve some Dickens info from, but have not been able to reach this person, yet.
Might you know anything about Elsworth Erastus and Elizabeth Anna? Where were the children born? Florence Lavina Dickens, thier daughter, my grandmother, Where might she have been born? The papers I have end with Florence on the bottom of the last page. It states her birth day as 03 April 1898. That is also stated on her death certif. Place of birth was unknown.
Florence married Harry William Davis on 09 April 1916. Where I would also like to know? How many times did she marry? Once I am guessing. They had eight children. Leonard, William J., Daniel, Harry, Hazel, August, and a Elanor May born and died 1917? in Madison, Wisc? Uncle Leon died in Wisc. Uncle Dan, Portland, Oregon., Uncle August died in Spokane, Wa., But buried in Portland, Oregon. Aunt Hazel died in Bismark, North Dakota. Uncle Bill (William John) lives in Bayview, Idaho, and my Dad, Harry Junior Davis lives in Spokane, Wa. That's seven kids by my count. Might you know of the eighth child?
Is Florence's Middle name Lavina?
Email me at jfkcrsd@yahoo.com
Thank you, Christina
