Re: Descendants of Noah and Hannah Dickinson

I should like to make it known that the cemetery mentioned in the email by midwife990 is the Edwards Family Cemetery, located near Ingleside, NC. As spokesman for 12 Edwards Family Descendants, I would also like to make it known that we unanimously oppose any plans to disturb the integrity and sanctity of our family cemetery by disinterring and relocating gravesites. We do not feel that disturbing the historical record is justified except in extreme cases were relocating a gravesite is the only means by which it can be preserved. We are also concerned about potential damage to the cemetery, which includes unidentified gravesites within its perimeter.

For more information on gravesite relocation please see the excellent website of the Chicora Foundation (http://www.chicora.org/cemetery-relocation.html).

Here is a direct quote from a representative of the Chicora Foundation when I wrote to them of the intentions of Louisburg College: "I would argue in the strongest possible terms that a cemetery relocation company is not appropriate for the removal of a historic burial. Such firms have no forensic or archaeological expertise and will not do an appropriate job. More to the point, however, I question the appropriateness of a removal by anyone -- even us. I see no point in such a removal, at least based on your discussions."

The Edwards Family Descendants recognize that Louisburg College had only good intentions in considering ways to honor their first president. We believe, however, that intentions to relocate his gravesite are misguided. We have proposed instead that the college should seek to have his present gravesite included in the National Register of Historical Places under Criterion B, “Graves of persons significant to a particular State, region of the country, or cultural group.”

If you are a descendant of the Edwards or Dickinson families and would like additional information, please don't hesitate to contact me.

My wife (herself a DICKINSON) descends from the DICKINSON family that come from in and around the village of Flockton in Yorkshire.

There are literally hundreds of them in the parish registers and yet I cannot find anyone researching them, or who links in to them.

If you have a DICKINSON from Flockton, or nearby (my wife's branch moved from Flockton to Middlestown, for example) I would love to hear from you.

Descendants of Noah and Hannah Dickinson

Louisburg College in Louisburg, NC. had it's beginning as Franklin Male Academy. Matthew Dickinson, was the first president. LC is celebrating 225 years. There is an effort underway to relocate the grave of Matthew Dickinson to the college campus near the original Male Academy building. His grave site is currently in the middle of an agricultural field along with the graves of a family that had befriended him. It is an unmarked family cemetery and is not being cared for. Matthew never married and has no direct descendants. However, if there are descendants of his siblings, we would like to include them in this celebration and recognition of his significance to the college. Matthew's parents were Noah and Hannah. His siblings include Hannah, Love, Submit, Noah, Parley and Ruth.

While I cannot help with your initial query, Iam pretty sure that there is a connection between our families. As far as I know Dickinsons from the Queens County {Laois since 1921} are of the same family. The earliest ancestor I have found is Thomas Dickinson,my great great grandfather. I do not have his date of birth, when he married or when he died.I do have a record of his children and their birth dates, all between 1839 and 1850.Their names are: Richard William Elizabeth Jane Thomas and Anne The names Anne or Annie recur right down through the generations.

,,,,.

Brown & Dickinson link

Samuel Brown son of Henry Brown and Mary Giles was born 1717 and died 6 Dec 1749. He married Mary Davis Dickinson daughter of Adam Dickinson/Dickenson and Catherine Stevenson (Stephenson) about 1743. She was born 1725 and died in 1770 August Co. VA. Sam and Mary had two sons Adam b. 1745 and William b. 1747 when he died in 1749 - she was pregnant with son Samuel born in 1750. In 1753 Mary Brown married Humphrey Madison cousin of President James Madison. They had one daughter Catharine born 1754. He was the sheriff of Allegheny County VA. He was killed by Indians in 1756 and step-sons Adam and William Brown were carried off by the Shawnees. Legend says that one boy later escaped. The other boy married an Indian girl and decided to stay with the Indians.
Mary Brown Madison married a third time to James Littlepage and bore him a son John Dickinson Littlepage b. 1760.

Does anyone know more about the sons of Samuel and Mary Dickinson Brown? Adam, William or Samuel?

Leslie
Hi Sandi, thanks so much for getting back to me.
I will be happy to send you what I have on the Dickinsons but I don't know how to send it via Ancestry. Can I send this to your home e-mail address if that is OK?It will have to be done in stages as it is a very big file.
It appears that your husband and mine are distantly related then, through Hannahs marriage.Do you have any info on any other younger Dickinsons at all?
I also have some photos of the earlier Dickinsons starting with Edwin. There were Dickinsons in New Zealand too, Edwins brother George emigrated there under the Canterbury scheme but this line has died out now.
My main info is from Hannahs brothers line ,his children etc.
I do not know any Dickinsons at all who are still in Yorkshire, but Hannahs descendants are still there I think. It would be nice to find some living Dickinsons after all this time.
Did any others go to the USA?
I have a Mary Fanny Sellman whose niece Fanny married Edwin Dickinson. Mary went to Utah, she married Richard Fox. They were Mormons, as were some of the other ancestors of both my husbands parents (Dickinson and Rowney)and these are well documented.
I can send this all off tomorow some time if you have an e-mail address.
It is almost midnight here in Oz, so I will wait to hear from you again.

My e-mail-
tjdickinson@bigpond.com

Bye for now,
Jac

Hi Jackie, Thank-you for the information that you provided. Hannah Dickenson is my husband's 4th Great Grandmother through her son John Steel. John moved to Canada around 1830 and married Mary Ann Burney from Nova Scotia in 1832. By 1842 he moved to New York State and settled in Sullivan County. That's where my husband grew up. I don't have any more info on the Dickenson family, I was pretty much stopped at Hannah. You have provided info for two more generations of my husband's ancestors. That is wonderful! Do you have any church records or other details that will help us research further?
Sandi Hamilton

Nancy Dickinson born 1786

It seems that Jonathan Dickinson father of Nancy was fond of Marys, there being three different ones listed as a wife. Several people have the mother of Nancy being Mary Hamilton, they also have have this Mary being dead 18 years before Nancy was born. Jonathan married Mary Hubbard Matthews March 3, 1786, is this Mary mother to Nancy. There is also a Mary Warner.

Mary Hubbard Matthews(widow of Aaron) is my connection. Is she also the mother of Nancy?

I was wondering if anyone can help with my mystery grandfather George Dickenson/Dickinson. All I know is his was born in 1899 I think North of England on his marriage certicate his father was John and (deceased)Tea planter.
The stories were that my grandfather George went to America and worked with Fred Astaire for a while and travelled all over different countries. I found him at the age of 17 on the SS Cedric going to America but would love to have information if he had returned to England on the same boat or whether he did indeed travel to all these different countries.
Mary Davis Dickenson/Dickinson b. 1725 daughter of Adam and Catherine Stevenson DickensonD

Samuel Brown son of Henry Brown and Mary Giles was born 1717 and died 6 Dec 1749. He married Mary Davis Dickinson daughter of Adam Dickinson and Catherine Stevenson (Stephenson) about 1743.

Leslie Barker Thomas

Charles Dickinson , RI line : 12 questions

My Line descends through Samuel-Xfer-Xfer

I have been developing a number of questions wondering if anyone has any answers.

1. Charles seems to have lived in Hartford after marrying Hester. Are there any land records or other pieces of civic information that have come to light?

2. Did the child of this union live with him in RHode Island? Is there a death date?

3. Did Charles or Phillippa leave a will? At 82 Charles certainly must have had time to think about this.

4. Did the Carrs and the Dickinsons have any relationship after Phillippa's marriage?

5. The Greene's, the Almy's, the Gilbert's and the Carrs were all people of note and well to do. Charles must have come from a similarly well-placed family. He had servants in CT in 1688. He had the #1 pew in the Narragansett Church.

6. I have seen other posters claim that he abandoned his first wife Hester. I was under the impression that she died and he was a widower with a young son. His former MIL Mary Gilbert must have helped him out financially in some way as he owed her according to her will.

7. At least 3 of Charles sons were called "Captain": RIchard, John and Jonathan. Did Charles have mercantile or shipping interests? Was he a planter or something different?

8. IF Charles was wealthy, which son(s) benefitted the most from the inheritance at his death? For some reason, Samuel, who left for Dutchess County (when?) was reduced to giving his children but 5 shillings sterling each upon his death in 1750. It doesn't seem as though he benefitted from any great wealth passed down. His son Christopher 1 is listed only as a weaver.

9. Do we know the cause of Jonathan's (1700-1728) death?

10. Christopher (1729-ca1800) had a number of male children who were of an age to have served in the Revolutionary War. Checking the DAR and online records, I haven't found even one who served. Was Christopher a loyalist by any chance?

11. Christopher Sr. was said to have lived in Connecticut before he was found in Beekman's Patent. WHere?

12. What is the evidence for Christopher's marriage date and his wife Mary's birth place?

It's a lot of questions, I know! I lived in Rhode Island for 2 years. If I'd know anything about my genealogy back then I would have had a great time researching. Now I'm several states away and it's quite a hike!

Thanks to any responders who shed some light.

Interesting parallel. My gt gt grandfather, William F Dickinson (b1822) came to America from Yorkshire area in 1845 and settled in Rockford, IL. His wife was Anne Coward, also born in England. He was active in the community as a liberal. His farm in Rockford, Winnebago County, IL was carried on by his son Frederick Dickinson (b1850)

After a break of over three years I am pleased to be back in the land of genealogy again. I am picking up the pieces of my DICKINSON research and would love to hear from anyone with an interets in this line, particularly from the Pilling area.
At some point in the New Year I hope to update the website and contents. http://johnpsmyth.co.uk/dickinson/
I look forward to renewing old acquaintances and making new ones. One further point, there are no connections, that I am aware of, to the USA, Canada or Australia. According to the research I have done so far, they rarely set foot out of Lancashire!
Best wishes
John

Photo found of H. Baron Dickinson, Tunbridge Wells, England c.1885.

I found a photograph of Henry Baron Dickinson, taken by Charles F. Wing of Tunbridge Wells, circa 1885. I've done a little digging into the history of Mr. Dickinson and found that he was Curate of St. James Church in Tunbridge Wells circa 1881+. He was born in Brixton, Surrey and married Esther Wakeling in 1873. He worked at St. Peter's, Streatham 1890-1904 and then at St. Stephen's, Lewisham from 1904 -?.

I am not related to H. Baron Dickinson, but would like to see this go back to a family member. Please contact me if interested.
