There is a list of prisoners on this webpage:
http://prisonshipmartyrs.com/gpage1.html, evidently the best list available (8000/11500), all the British Admiralty had to offer. Thanks to the Ft. Greens Rangers.
I did not find George Dieter, or any Teter for that matter in this list. If you know of any this is the page to alert to that fact (then us).

I am working on the PUTERBAUGH/PUDERBAUGH/BUTERBAUGH family history and came across this surname in Frederick Co, PA and was trying to see if this could be connected with my surnames. Also, have you come across the TETER/DIETER surname connected with the DIETRICH surname?

I am reposting this message as the last did not take. If there would be a connection, It would have to be back to Hanover Germany.Hienrick Dieters was born6/27/1823. As you probly know many of the records before WW2 in Germany were destroyed. Many of the dieters at one time or other lived in Bucks county. You may be interested in this (House of Names) This traces the Dieters to Pomerania. I don,t know how correct it is.
maynard
md1931@bellsouth.net

From what I gather, all of those names are derivations of "Dieter", "Deeter", "Deter", "Dietrich", German derivatives. Our PA Dieters were early German settlers notably in Northampton. Some of them were located in Lehigh County, PA and some in Lancaster Co., PA. Some of them were "Lutherans", some were "Moravians". A recent posting talked of a "Dieter" church in Moore Twnship. Captain John Joseph Deeter served in the Rev. War. His Birthdate is Dec 1751, Hanover Twnshp, Northampton, PA. Died April 1824. I've seen his name "Dieter" and "Deeter". Perhaps this is helpful information.

If it is correct ,it would trace the Dieters back to Pomerania.I believe the site is House of Names. com Many of our ancesters were from the Bucks county area.I don,t believe Capt Dieters is in my relation, unless it is in Germany. I have traced mine to Hienrick Dieters born Hamburg Germany 6/27/1823.It is hard to go back to records , because most were lost during WW 2.

Thank you, Steve. The quest will have to continue to sort out the Kohl/Cole/Dieter entanglement during the Revolutionary War Period. I received another reply re: a "Dieter Church". Located in Moore Township, Northampton, PA near Dainesville. I still believe this is the Dieter line and I wonder how far back Ms. Gundry's book goes? Will share any treasures I glean along the way. -Jill

Hi Jill: I'm glad I could be of some help to you. I can email you some scans of the first several pages of the Dieter book if you like. You'll just have to wait a few days until I get my new system (incl. scanner) completely set up. Please reply to the e-mail address in my profile and I will send the scans to that e-mail address. If you could see the book, you'd realize there is no simple list of the Dieters but there are some charts that may be of some help to you. It sounds like you believe that your Mary Dieter was a daughter of Capt. Dieter (since he was against the marriage to Mr. Cole)? From the book, it looks like it would not be possible for a Mary born in 1776 to be a daughter of Capt. Dieter. Mrs. Gundry's book only goes back to John Dieter, father of the John Dieter Jr you mention and there is apparently little known about his ancestry according to the book (which was originally published in 1973).

Hi Steve: Thank you so much for replying. We do have multiple names...George, Conrad, Maria Magdalena, John Dieter (aka Deeter). This is what I have learned from my family sources: John Dieter, Jr. (b. 1725, Germany, d. 1773, Moore Twnshp, PA) married Anna Catherine Thowison (1729-before March 1770, PA). Their son: Captain John Joseph Deeter (1751-1824), Northampton, PA married Maria Magdalena Kohl (1757-1840) she was the daughter of Conrad Kohl (born bef. 1731, Wirtemberg Dourlach Palentine, (now Bavaria Germany). I think he was known as "George Conrad Kohl". Sergeant George Kohl was in Captain Dieter's company in the American Rev. He married Margaret Frum. Their son, Conrad Cole (he Americanized "Kohl")(1775-1795) married Mary Dieter (b. 1776 or 1772) Lehigh County,Northampton, PA, in front of a Justice of the Peace, 1797. In 1798 Conrad Cole and Mar4y Deeter Cole went westward across the Alleghenies. They were among the earliest settlers in Crawford County, PA. They were reputed to be very wealthy and owned 400 acres of land in Crawford County. They gave money for a public school and Evangelical Lutheran Church were Conrad Cole and wife, Mary Deeter Cole are buried. It seems Captain Dieter was against this marriage which resulted in their move Westward to Crawford County. I would love to have a simple listing of the Dieters from Mrs. Gundry's book beginning with the German Dieters of 1632. There is no doubt these two families both from Germany became American patriots together and were significant settlers in PA. Thanks for the good info. -Jill

Hi Jill:

I, too, have the book and decided to answer since the post to which you replied is from 2001. I can't seem to find a Conrad Cole (Kohl) marrying back into the Dieter family. The main connection to the Kohl family in the book is that Capt. John Dieter married Maria Magdalena Kohl. Maria Magdalena's parents were Conrad Kohl & Anna Maria Drach. Before marriage Capt. John and Maria Magdalena sponsored (in 1772) the baptism of John Kohl, son of George Kohl & his wife Catharine. It is surmised in the book that George and Maria Magdalena were siblings. Perhaps this is the George you mentioned and Conrad is the brother of John Kohl above. There are numerous Mary Dieter's in the book but none I can see that fit the info you have (none that mention marrying a Kohl). Do you have any further info that might help?

I'm wondering if the Kohl family is like the Dieters in that there are many with the same name and it becomes confusing. I have 5 ancestors with the name John Dieter and is it hard trying to keep from being confused.

Sorry I wasn't more of a help but if you have any additional information on Mary, I will give it another look. Good luck.

Steve

Hi Carrie,
Good to hear from you again. I know what you mean about the Puter problems. I have gone through that. In reference to snail-mail, I use that to compare it to Email. No reflection on the quality of the the deliverer.
But the Caroline Deiter and Caroline Tucker are the ones who got me started in genealogy. I may have already mentioned this but there were a couple of newspaper clippings in my grandmother's Bible that mentioned Caroline Tuckers in them but they were married to different men. I was curious as to whether it was one perso with 2 husbands or what. That's how I got started. And yes, you have them listed right. As near as I can tell at present, we are fourth Cousins. I will have to get all of your family lines down right before I can say for sure.
As for myself, I just turned 77 on the 12th of August, and now I am an old coot. Pauline, my wife and I have 3 kids. I should say adults. Deborah Ann is 52, Joseph is 49 and Diane is 46. Debbie has no children and Joe has a daughter, Jamie Michelle, who is 23 and a son, Christopher Lawrence, who is 17. Diane has 2 stepsons, Michael, who lives in northern Ca. and Jason who is in the USAF and is stationed in Germany at present. She also has a son, Adam James, who is 21, and unmarried, but he has a son, Lucas James. My first g-grandchild. Diane also has a son Jacob Andrew, who is 18 and just enlisted in the USAF. She also has a daughter, Sydney Lynn Noelani, who is 17 today. We are celebrating her birthday here tonight. Boy, I can really ramble on when I get going, can't I? I have been retired for about 17 years now and loving every minute of it. I just had quadruple bypass surgery on the 1st of May and am pretty well recovered. I am still trying to find out about the Deiter line prior to Caroline and Thomas. I noticed a reference to an Elizabeth Beir in one Tree and can't find any connection. The info about Adam Deiter and Elizabeth Kocher is from Caroline Deiter's death certificate. I can't find any reference to them anywhere else. But I have to go now so will say good bye.
Hi Larry,
Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you, but I have been having a heck of a time with my computer. I've had to uninstall and reinstall my internet security several times. I think I finally got the problem fixed, for the time being any way.
I grew up in Paramount. You'd be hard pressed to find a more rural community but I love it.
When I renew my accout with ancestry.com (probably in October when it starts to rain) I can check all my info.
I'm sending a picture of my grandfather Edward Casterlin who is/was the son of Lydia Dieter Casterline who was/is the daughter of Thomas Dieter who was/is the brother of Caroline Dieter Tucker who is/was the mother of your great grandmother Caroline Tucker. I hope I got that right, it can make your head hurt afterwhile. Either way, we are related but I'm not sure what the relation would be called do you? Are we distant cousins serveral times removed or something like that.
Tell me, Larry, what do you do for a living? Or are you retired? I only have 6 more years until I can retire but I think I will still work longer providing my health holds out.
Do you have children? and grandchildren? I have two kids Kassidy, she's 20, and Kyle, he's 18. They are both in college this fall, another reason to keep on working. Anyway, speaking of working I better get off to bed morning always seems to come too early. lol
Thanks in advance for sending the info. I have to look through my mom's photos to find the ones of Lydia Dieter Casterline but I will do that soon.
Have a good night, will write again soon.
Take Care,
Carrie

Hi Carrie,
Larry here again. Thank you for your fast response. I was waiting anxiously for it. The Dotterer name is where I descend from. My emigrant ancestor was born in Germany in 1683 and arrived in America between 1717 and 1721. His grandson, Johan Conrad Dotterer is the first Dotterer sttler in Northampton Co. Pa. As for the Deiters and Tuckers, I have quite a bit of info on them and even some pics of Wm. Tucker and Caroline Deiter. Also of four of their daughters and their one son Thomas Tucker who died in the 1930s I believe. Regretfully I do not have one of my g-grandmother, Caroline Tucker, who by the way was the instigator of my getting into genealogy. My sister, Doris died in 1990 and her sons were going thru her things and came across my grandmother's bibl;e. They gave it to me and I stuck it in a drawer and as I was moving it one day it fell and came apart and a couple of newspaper clipping caught my eye. Two Caroline Tuckers, married to different husbands. I had heard we had a Tucker line at sometime but did not know who or when. I got curious as to who the two Carolines were. Was it one women married twice or what. And right now I have almost 24,000 people in my Tree. But anyway, you mentioned in your other message about your family have some black sheep.  Join the club. I came to California at the age of 4 years. My father ran off with his brother's wife and they took all of their kids myself included and we headed west. That was in 1936. They left her only daughter with our grandparents and she was raised by them.We didn't go back to Pa. until about 1947. So I never really knew my mother and as a result we never binded to well. But to shorten this, If you nwill send me your snail-mail address I will send you a package on what I hve regarding thie Deiters and Tuckers. And whatever else you might want. By the way, my snail-mail address is as follows;
Lawrence R, Dutter
232 N. Angeleno Ave.
Azusa, Ca. 91702

Thank you again, Larry
I am decended from a Thomas Dieter who is listed in Buck Township in the 1870 census I believe. His daughter, my g-grandmother Lydia married the boy next door named John Edward Casterline. I know that Thomas had a sister Caroline who married a man named Tucker, who if I'm not mistaken lived in Buck Township as well.
I just look at the date of this posting and realized you might already have found the answers you were looking for.
My greatgreat grandfather is Silas A. Tator. Could be one in the same as your Silas Tator? He was originally married to Helen VanZandt. If we're on the right track, please contact me directly: ediescott@verizon.net I have lots of info!

Re: Dieter's in Ohio

George Ditler (Dieter) married Helenn McKimm (McKim) in Stark County, Ohio in 1855 (familysearch record).

On the 1860 Census George and Ellen Dieter are in Canton, Stark County, Ohio with children Robert and John. Plus an older Bridget McKim (age 63, born Ireland). Ellen (Helen?) says born in New York.

In 1850 Bridget McKim is in Nimskellin, Stark County, and a Helen McKim is in household. Plus an Ann and Mary. 1850 Census indicates a move from New York between abt 1832 and 1839.

In 1840 a George and Robert McKim are in Nimskellin. Robert McKim has 3 female children and an older female that closely matches the 1850 Census for Bridget. George has no females in his household.

Thank you for your information re George Dieter and his wife Ellen (Helen) McKim. I have visited a cemetery in Wayne, Ohio and George's parents are buried there along with other siblings. If you are interested, Graham Cemetery is just south of Wayne. Have been planning on visiting the Canton area and your info re the township of Nimishillen will be very helpful in possibly locating a burial place for Robert and Bridget McKim and maybe Ellen. In the interesting world of genealogy, I grew up in Crawford County Iowa and there are McKims in a nearby town. Small world or travelling west together? If you have any questions, contact me at pdreidell@aol.com
