Dear Mr Cooper

I replied to your e-mail on the 14th January 2010 thanking you for the information you gave me about the marriage of John Dormer and Alice Dighton and asking for the link to all the information you have about the Dighton family, in particular James Lucy Dighton and his connection with Ascott Park, near Stadhamton in Oxfordshire.

Can you send it to me please as I'm doing an update on the Ascott Park history. I rather think you may have responded before but I couldn't open whatever it was you sent me

Kindest regards
John Sykes

Thanks so much John for the marriage date of Alice Dighton and John Dormer. This narrows the abortive building work and landscaping at Ascott Park down to any time between 1712 and 1727, assuming John Dormer's estate plan was the proposal for this work (it incorporates the Dighton coat of arms)

The info about John Dighton is also helpful.

My e-mail is jds@norleigh.wanadoo.co.uk. I live near Witney so we are not that far away. Do please provide the link to the Dighton website and I will send you my history of Ascott Park

All best wishes
John Sykes

Dear Mr Cooper,

I have been researching the history of Ascott Park near Stadhampton in Oxfordshire. This property, as you probably know, was acquired by the Dightons from the Cottrell-Dormer family in 1760.Alice Dighton of Clifford Chambers married John Dormer and lived there until her death in 1780.

Are you able to tell me the date when she married John Dormer - it would help to pinpoint the date when they started building a house on the site which was abandoned, we believe, through debt. The site of this work was identified last summer in an archaeological excavation sponsored by The Oxfordshire Buildings Trust, of which I am a member.

I have read Conway Dighton's history of the Dighton family. Are you able to add anything about this insofar as it relates to Ascott Park. In particular whether the owner James Lucy Dighton ever lived or stayed there at the time his aunt Alice Dormer was alive, or later before he sold the estate in 1787. Do you know his main place of residence and why he sold up - Conway Dighton says he gambled so was debt also the reason.

Any information you can provide about the Dightons and their connection with Ascott would be much appreciated. I would be very happy to send you a paper on my own historical researches in return

Yours sincerely
John Sykes

Perhaps you can decipher it better. Wendy.

I'm looking for relatives of Samuel Reed Dighton. He was a sailor during WWII and listed his hometown as Sanford, Florida. He was aboard the sub, the USS GRUNION when it went missing in July, 1942 while on its maiden voyage in the Aluetians. The families were not notified for several months.

They were declared dead Aug 2, 1943. 70 men died on this submarine and until recently nothing was known about their fate.

Now a search is underway to locate the sub, it is being conducted by the son's of Commander Mannert and I have joined the search for relatives so we can share this exciting news. Any leads or tips would be greatly appreciated.....Thank you

Dorothy,
I am trying to locate the parents or siblings of my GrGrGrandmother, Alice Deighton b. Sept. 1860 and her brother, William b. 1864. Both were born in Illinois. and according to the 1880 Henry Co., Mo census, William Deighton 15 yrs, was living with my GrGrGrandparents, Robert Sharp 31, and Alice Deighton Sharp 19. It also states that William and Alices parents, were both born in England. Please let me know if you think there maybe a connection between my Illinois Deightons and yours.
Thank you,
Shelley
