I have only just come across this now but my grandfather was Marion Stewart Dimmock III, the great grandson of General Dimmock. He too, like his grandfather and namesake, was an architect. He graduated from UVA and made his career in New York City, ultimately retiring to Connecticut. In his career as an architect, among other things, he oversaw the construction of the iconic Jerusalem YMCA, while employed by Arthur Loomis Harmon.

Our family is fortunate to possess a beautiful oil painting of General Dimmock, plus his cavalry saber, which my grandfather spent many years fighting the Virginia State Capital to return as the items had been lost by the family in the fall of Richmond.

We have a fair amount of history regarding General Dimmock although much of it comes from the archives at West Point, which I assume you have access to. I believe he was the 100th graduate of West Point, at least that's family lore.

I haven't visited this line in a while and probably wouldn't until the 1940 census is released, but I do have some resources now that I didn't have a few years ago.

Donna married Raymond Morgan Jr. whose obit can be found on the Cleveland Necrology database. He died in 1957 and as far as I know, Donna is still living. They had a daughter named Lori b. ca 1945.

James died in 1998 leaving a wife Patricia A. Melhuish. They had at least two children.

Was hoping someone could help me locate a photo of Ernest Harold Dimmock or his wife Mary Mildred (Sandela/Senvela) Dimmock.

Ernest was born 1879 and 1956 in Cleveland, Ohio. He was the son of William Henry & Helen F. (Melhuish) Dimmock. Ernest married Mary Mildred Sandela/Senvela 1906 in New York - eventually moving back to the Cleveland, Ohio area.

Further note - Ernest's grandparents were Henry & Mary Ann (Shepherd) Dimmock from England. It appears they came to the US in 1873 with their children Catharine Marie, William Henry, Alfred John, Sidney Frederick and Florence Celina.

I am in fact searching for photos of all these family members if anyone is interesting - I already have a photo of Florence.

Either way - would love hear from others researching these families.

More detailed info:

Catharine Marie Dimmock married James Charles Macey
William Henry Dimmock married Helen F. Melhuish
Alfred John Dimmock married Hattie Alice McCarthy
Sidney Frederick Dimmock married Vashti M. Lefurgey
Florence Celina Dimmock married Henry Robert Wallace 'Harry' Potter

They all lived in the Cleveland, Ohio area accept for Alfred & Hattie who moved to Indiana and also Sidney & Vashti who moved to Michigan and then to Wisconsin and then back to Michigan.
I believe Gen. Chas. Dimmock had sons named Charles Henry, William Courtney, and another, a prominent Richmond architect named Marion. Perhaps more. Could they be links? I know one living 90+ grandaughter of C.H. Dimmock but never heard her mentio the name Wellington Dimmock. Of course most of us follow a family line and miss the families of sisters and brothers.

Gen. Chas. was born in Barnstable MA but married a Maryland girl before retiring in Richmond long before the War. But the related Dimmocks I would generally hear of from that branch were either in Maryland, or Tidewater Virginia.
Good hunting.

I just ran across your post. I'm interested in the family of this particular Charles DIMMOCK. I believe he may an uncle of my 2nd great grandfather, Charles Wellington DIMMOCK, whose father I can't find. Am sure the general isn't his father because the birthdates don't work:"my" Charles was born in 1818. Do you have more info on the general's family?

Thanks so much!
Judy Meredith
I just ran across your query online. If you remain interested in Charles Dimmock, let me know. I a lot of collateral information on the him and the family which is interesting. He was my grandmother Susan Selden Dimmock's grandfather, and one of many whose family was torn apart by the Civil War, as he was born here in Barnstable on Cape Cod, went to West Point, but later retired in Richmond where his service there as head of the Capital guard known as the Richmond Grays, and posiyion as head of the State armory, led to his appointment by the governor as the man to prepare VA's ordnance for possible war. And as you know he became a Brigadier General in the Confederacy, dying before the end of the war in 1863.

-Wm. C. H.
Thank you, Sarah, any help is much appreciated.
Bottom line of my Davis/Dimmock search is to try and prove/disprove a connection between DAVID DAVIS (b. May 1824 in Buxton, ME) and any descendant of John Davis who m. Mehitable Dimmock. IF this line is accurate, it would run something like this:

Gen. # 1 John Davis b: 02 Sep 1681 Barnstable, MA s/o
Josiah Davis & Ann Taylor.
+Mehitable Dimmock
2 John Davis, Jr. b: ca. 1708 Barnstable
+Anna Allen
3 Josiah Davis	b: ca. 1738 Barnstable, MA
+Thankful Gorham

Three of Josiah's sons had children born Buxton, ME. Could
one of them be the grandfather of DAVID DAVIS (Gen. #6)???

4. John Davis b. 1759
4. Sylvanus Davis b: ca. 1767 Barnstable, MA
Sons of Sylvanus who were in Buxton and MAY be
father of DAVID DAVIS
Gen #5 i. Ebenezer b. 1790 Gorham, ME
ii. Urick b. 1799 Buxton, ME
iii. Daniel Davis b: 21 Sep 1801 Buxton, ME (
iv. Lot b. 1803 Buxon, ME

4. Solomon Davis b. 1780 Gorham, MA Only one son,
Joseph, was barely old enough (17-19) when DAVID
DAVIS born.

Gen.# 6. DAVID DAVIS B. 01 May 1824 Buxton, ME.
Unfortunately for researchers, David married
(Mary E. Jaquith) in 1849, so was not included in
enumeration of parents in 1850.

Hope this format holds up well enough to make sense. DAVID DAVIS is my husband's gg.grandfather, and has finding his ancestors has remained a brick wall since 1984 when I took over my mother-in-law's research records. With a 76th BD coming up soon, I'm beginning to wonder if I'll run out of time before I find the parents of "G'pa Davis, glass-blower," who the family still talked about when my husband was growing up, partly because of the lovely hand-blown glass cane he left behind. Contact me direct email if you prefer.

Joanne

Joanne: I found in the Genealogical Notes on Barnstable Families under Dimmock the following:
Josiah Davis, son of Robert, born Sept. 1656, md Ann, dau. of Richard Taylor, (tailor) of Yarmouth, June 25, 1679 and had
12. John Davis, 2d Sept. 1681 md M. Dimmock Aug. 13, 1705.

John Davis had 8 other siblings. There is further a section covering John Davis and Mehitable Dimmock, dau. of Shubael Dimmock.

I don't have any of this entered into FTM yet but if this is the one your looking for let me know and I'll see what I can do. There are about 28 pages covering the Davis name.

Dimmock is one of my deceased husband's ancestors and also married into some of the lines connected to my ancestry.
Sarah

I have Tabitha Robinson listed as wife of Ebenezer Dimick who was born about 1730 in Falmouth, MA. They married january 6, 1757 in Falmouth. Their children, all born in Falmouth, were Chloe, Elizabeth, Jabez Robinson and Elvin.

The Robinsons were interwoven with the Dimicks from the time of Elder Thomas Dimick and Isaac Robinson in Falmouth 1647 to the late 1800's in Bridgewater, Vermont. The connections were recorded by my uncle is his history of the Dimick's. I have a searchable pdf file copy of his document which shoews 113 references to Robinson.
I have listed under Thomas Dimick (b. Mar 16, 1727) a listing for "Charles, b. 10 dec. 1756. He was a master ships carpenter; ch(ildren) included (a) the late John L. Dimock of Boston; (b) Col. Charles Dimmock of Richmond, VA."

There is no additional information on either Charles.

Hope this helps.

How interesting. Thank you! I still haven't made a connection between my Charles Wellington DIMMOCK and Charles DIMMOCK, b: 1756. Namely, I don't know which of the first Charles' sons was C.W.'s father. Any information on that?

You have a Mayflower connection!

Thomas Dimick (b. Mar 16, 1727, Barnstable, MA, d. Sep 19, 1806 in Barnstable) married Elizabeth Bacon of Barnstable on Oct 6, 1755. They had 3 children:

Charles (b. Dec 10, 1756)
Hannah (b Jul 21, 1758)
John (b June 16, 1764)

Thomas Dimick was descended from Elder Thomas Dimick of Barnstable, MA, Shubael Dimick, Thomas Dimick, and Edward Dimick (Thomas' father. Elder Thomas is descended from the Dymock line of Scrivelsby, England who included the King's Champion. The Dimick line can be traced back through the Marmion's to William the Conqueror and Robert Marmion, King's Champion to WTC. I have been able to get back to 1006 in Normandy.

Elizabeth Bacon of Barnstable was daughter of John Bacon who descended from John Howland (Mayflower Immigrant) by Desire Howland, Desire Gorham and Mary Hawes (John Bacon's mother). Here is your Mayflower connection!

Thanks, Buddy!
It looks as if John Lewis is a possible candidate. He'd have been 22 when my Charles Wellington was born (25 Mar. 1818). Interesting as to how "Jackson" came into the family. I was wondering about that, too.
Do you have any more info on John Lewis? I read somewhere that he moved to Boston and there was a thimble maker there by that name. (I have a thimble with "Mary J. Dimmock" engraved on it.)

Thanks, Buddy!
I've seen the Phinney book. I wondered about Elijah's brother, too. Elijah's son joined him in the business, as did my C.W. I think he also had a partner named James Stone at one point. I need to dig around in old Alton newspapers somemore, I guess. I've found any number of newspaper ads for Dimmock Boot and Shoe Co. I'll persue the leads you provided.

Judy Meredith

I have found it reported that he was a Col of Richmond, VA. Also that he graduated from West Point and was a General. I have only two children listed for this couple. Charles Henry b 18 Nov 1831 and William Courtney b 16 June 1845 in Eastern Shore of Maryland. There may have been others.

Charles was the son of Charles Dimick and Deborah Lewis

Funny though, I was just thinking that I should figure some of that out when you found me.

Very interesting about the grain elevator paper, considering the long history of that industry in my family with Acme-Evans, Tidewater also Early Daniel Co.

Could you please tell me more about the Robertson line through Mary Robertson's grandparents (or more if you have energy)?
PP. 503 through the entire Mix Family data were prepared by Donald Lines Jacobus for my great grandfather with Jacobus' name signed by his Irma Mohr testifying to the research. All documentation referenced. The copyright rests entirely with the family. There are few copies of this book and I would like to republish it if there were enough interest.
The Genealogical History of Edgar Hanks Evans, Mix Family Sketch starts with a background of the family & descendants of...
Thomas Mix, born in England, died at New Haven, Conn., in 1691; married Rebecca Turner, daughter of Capt. Nathaniel Turner.
"Tho: Meeks" first appeared in New Haven records 7 Mar. 1643, when with several others he was fined for tardiness in coming to military training the 18 Feb. preceding. He signed the oath of fidelity at New Haven, 7 Mar. 1647. He was late coming to meeting with his arms one Lord's day, for which he was fined 5 Sept. 1648, as well as for absenting himself from training the previous day...
Please let me know which Mixes are in your lineage. Jacobus, Tufts (Susan Cotton) & Evans traced Evans' direct ancestors with wonderful attention to detail.

Here's some data on Thomas Dimmock, brother to Mehetible. (Hope I get all of this right!)

Thomas Dimmock 1694-1741 (born in Barnstable died in Cuba?) m. Anna Mason 1704-1720 (Note: I think I wrote the wrong last name of Anna in a previous post - sorry.)

Thomas Dimmock 1664-9/9/1697 m. Desire Sturgis 1666-3/29/1749

Shubael Dimmock 4/15/1644 - 10/29/1727 m. Joanna Bursley c 1645 - 1727

Thomas Dimmock 10/7/1604 Pinchneck London - 6/4/1658 Barnstable, MA m. Ann Hammond b. 1609 Lavenham, Eng. - unknown death date

Probably (unproven) John Dymoke c. 1582-??? who m. Matharine Broxholme and married c. 1599 in Scrivelsby, Lincoln, England

----------
This doesn't help you on the Mehitible Dimmock Davis line, but is probably useful to other Dimmock researchers.

Desire Sturgis who married Thomas Dimmock was the daughter of Edward Sturgis Jr Temperance Gorham. Edward Jr. was the son of Edward Sturgis Elizabeth Hinckley. Edward Sr. was the son of John Sturgis Margaret Austin and that Edward was probably a son of another Edward Sturgis who lived c. 1557-1625.

Elizabeth Hinckley was the daughter of Thomas Hinckley and an Anna.

Temperance Gorham was the daughter of Capt. John Gorham Desire Howland. John Gorham was the son of Ralph Gorham probably a Margaret Stephenson (not positive). Ralph Gorham was the son of James Gorham Agnes Bernington.

Desire Howland was the daughter of John Howland Elizabeth Tilley (MAYFLOWER).
Della M. Dimmick (1803, MA-1881, IN); Holly Crawford (1796, NY-1879, IN) / Kellogg?Segwick?

I am looking for an ancestry that is truthful for Holly CRAWFORD b.1796, NY; d.1879, Gibson Co., IN and his wife Della Maria DIMMICK/DIMMIK b.1803, MA; d.1881, Gibson Co., IN.
I have seen several group sheets and LDS ancestral files on these two families, but I am suspicious of the connections that are being asserted and would like to work with someone on finding the truth.

Several ancestral files have Della M. Dimmick Crawford as daughter of William Beebe Dimmick and Pamela Kellogg. The Kellogg line ascends to a distant claim that one of the forefathers of the family was Myles Standish-- I found this to be not only untrue, but also widely known as a made-up genealogy.

I am very particular about accuracy and documentation and would like to either prove or disprove the notes I am working off of, but I need some help from someone else who may have been researching these families. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

srimell@chartercom.com

The Richmond General Charles Dimmock was indeed a West Point graduate. He died in Richmond 10-27-1863 and is buried in Hollywood Cemetery there. I have more. Could you email me direct (to bsallardice1@aol.com) the source(s) for what you have on your Charles Dimmock?

Dimmock Families in the 1600 & 1700s

There is a website called "American Silversmiths" that has lots of genealogy information from the 1600 & 1700s, and there are several Dimmock names there. You can click on any name for more information. The link for the site is listed below.
Joyce

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~silversmiths/names8...

Hannah Davis-wife of Samuel Dimmock/Jabez Robinson

Is anyone researching Hannah Davis who married Jabez Robinson, probably in Barnstable or Falmouth, MA, about in the 1730s?

According to the Robinson Genealogy, Hannah was the daughter of Joseph T. Davis. I haven't found any further information on her parentage.

Jabez and Hannah had 2 children before Jabez's death in Falmouth 1740. They were Jabez Jr.[1737-1812] and Tabitha [1739 - ?]. I believe Tabitha married a Dimmock.

There was a Hannah Davis who married Samuel Dimmock in the same area of Massachusetts. Samuel's mother's name was Tabitha. However, the dates of their children conflict with the dates of Jabez and Hannah.

Has anyone sorted this all out?
Thanks.
Deb

Hello Jeanette, Thank you for your response. My connection to the Dimmock line is through the Rices. Orton Dimmock's first wife was Mary Sweet d/o Warren and Rachel Rice Sweet. Rachel Rice was a sister of my GGGfather Abner Rice of Edwards, St. Lawrence Co., NY. She died out in Kansas I believe. Thanks again for adding to the family lines. Linda
