I hope I receive an answer.. My father, Samuel Morris Spriggs, is half brother of James. His mother was Dorothea. Dorothea, Samuel, James and Richard are all buried in the same family plot, in Mulkey Cemetery in SouthWest Eugene.
Do you have any ancestry of Dorothea, my Grandmother? I would appreciate any information you might have.
Thank you
John Spriggs,
j.spriggs10@yahoo.com

Harriet Ditton b 1859 in Indiana

Hello Dittons with connections to Indiana,

I’m looking for the parents of Harriet Ditton who was born Sep 1859 in Indiana (probably Whitley Co., but possibly neighboring Wabash Co.). Before age 10 (but possibly shortly after birth) she was adopted by John Graham (my husband’s gg grandfather) and lived most of her life in Richland, Whitley, Indiana. I’m certain she is one of your cousins and I hope you can help me figure out how she fits into your family.

Here’s the rest of what I know about Harriet: Harriet married George W. Smith (b Dec 1855) on 31 Dec 1882 and they had a daughter named Mary Ruth (b Dec 1894). The 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930 census records list Harriet’s father’s birth place as: OH, NY, PA, IN, IN respectively - so that’s no help! Birth place of her mother (IN, NY, PA, IN, OH) is equally useless. (John Graham was born in Ireland so she isn’t giving info on her adopted parents)

George Ditton (b 1813 in England) and his family are the only Dittons in Whitley County at the time (but Lagro is only about 20 miles to the south). I found John Ditton (b 1780 – 1790) in the 1840 Whitley Co., Indiana census so I suspect George Ditton is his son (and therefore brother to Obediah & William (the one who married Susannah Shaubhut)). George Ditton’s first wife was Jane (b 1829 in NY) and she died bef 6 Sep 1860 (the marriage date of George to 2nd wife Mary). Harriett could be daughter of Jane & George.

John Graham’s 1st wife was Mary C. ____ (b 1833 in Ohio) I wonder if she might be a Ditton?

Does anyone know how Harriet fits into your family?

Suzi
Hi Lorraine,

I have a reasonable amount on Mary Ann DITTON etc. Are you in Australia. Another DITTON researcher has put together a CD on the Ditton family. Let me know what you have already and I'll see if we can add to it. I am in Sydney. Am related through a son from Robert Ditton and Jane Waller (his second wife) Mary Ann's mother was Druscilla, his first wife who died before Robert came to Australia.

The Dittons in my family originally came from Oxford although during the mid to late 1800s most of them seem to have made their way up to London.

Lynne

I too have connection to DITTON family from Woodchurch. Robert DITTON maried first Druscilla FURRELL and after she died he married Jane WALLER and in 1839 came to Australia and went on to have several other children. Have lots of info on the Australian connection but trying to connect up the Ditton branches in England. At this stage I believe Robert DITTON's PARENTS was John DITTON(born 1781 and died after 1851) and Elizabeth SUTTERFRED. It looks like they may have been first or second cousins to your family. would be interested to see how far back you have researched in Woodchurch.

Regards, Bev bainton, Sydney Australia.

Kristi,
Don't think I can be of much help to your research, interested as I am. I live in England and come from, probably, a very small branch of the Ditton family. I know of my grandparents - just - and my father's siblings (all of whom died without issue). The only Dittons we have left are my older sister and me. I am the last born Ditton that I know of from our bit of the family. Hence my surprise at such a healthy and widespread contingent of American cousins.
Please do let me know if you suspect that we are linked.
Cheers Julie

My g-grandfather was Robert Ditton, married Hannah Freathy 15.1.1877 Mile Town, Sheerness. Hannah was from Lydd, Kent and they returned there to live. My grandmother, Agnes Maria Ditton was born 1.1.1878 and Robert Ditton died 4.5.1878, aged 39. All I can find is that he was an illiterate fisherman and his father was William Ditton, also a fisherman. I have been able to find out nothing more about Robert or William Ditton - they could be from the Woodchurch, Kent, Ditton families, but I don't know. Can anyone help?

Have since located following info also but am looking for additional information.

My husband's grandfather was Benjamin Harrison Ditton b 1848 Staten Island, NY. His siblings were Nelly, William, Isabella, Nelson, Mary Ann, William R., and Hutson. Their parents were William Ditton (1821-3/20/1886) and Ann Steers (1825-4/21/1898) - both born in Woochurch, Kent Co., England. William's parents were Robert and Catherine Ditton who came with their family to New York on the Ship Colulmbia 5/7/1828. William's siblings were Celia, Alfred, Richard, Thomas, Sarah, Daniel, Robert and Charlotte - all born in England. They lived in Staten Island, NY, but William and Ann moved to LaGro, Ind. between 1857-1859. Moved on to Sedalia, Mo. in 1870 where they died.

Have death certificates and obituaries pertaining to my William and Ann and some are incorrectly mixing them up with William and Susannah Ditton who also settled in LaGro and died there.

My William's father born about 1777 in Kent Co., England and his wife Catherine also born about 1777 in England. These Dittons were related to those in LaGro, but having difficulty making exact connection. I believe Robert's parents were Daniel and Eleanor Blatcher Ditton and Robert's siblings would be Sarah, Charlotte, George, John (who married Bennett King), and Elizabeth. However, other information on internet raises questions on this. Does anyone know where and when John (who married Bennett King) Ditton's parents, Robert and Catherine died?

Any other descendants of Alfred, Thomas and Daniel Ditton who lived and died in Staten Island? Thank you for any help. Jo Ann Ditton
