Jacob Wesley and Mary MOORE DITZENBERGER, IN, mid 1800s

I was previously confused about the identity of Jacob Wesley's youngest "children," unable to follow them through the records. The reason has now become clear, because of my realization that there were TWO census records listing them in the same year.

This information may help others.

As the Ditzenberger biography states at the Boone County Historical Society's webpage, there are actually fourteen children (not seventeen) of Jacob and Mary. There is a census record for 1870, Eagle, Boone, IN, which names Jacob as head of household and at the bottom of his household are three males, George, Charles and Conrad, whose ages dovetail so well into those of the older children that they appear to be Jacob and Mary's sons, thus...

Jac Ditzenberger 61
Mary Ditzenberger 52
Alexander Ditzenberger 14
Lewellan Ditzenberger 13
Mary Ditzenberger 11
Jonathan Ditzenberger 8
George Ditzenberger 7
Charles Ditzenberger 3
Conrad Ditzenberger 1

HOWEVER, another record for the same year, 1870, but for Center, Boone, IN shows the same three males, George, Charles and Conrad, this time residing with C.A. (Charles Augustus) and Henry, thus...

C A Ditzenbarge 35
Henry Ditzenbarge 8
George Ditzenbarge 6
Charles Ditzenbarge 4
Conrad Ditzenbarge 1

Further, the records for these four boys as sons of Charles Augustus are readily found (with the exception of Conrad), but if trying to piece together a history for any of them as sons of Jacob and Mary, there's nothing.

The three males, therefore, are grandsons of Jacob and Mary, despite the appearance as sons on the Eagle, Boone Co. census. The lack of relationship data on the 1870 census led me to the mistake, but finding the census for Center, Boone Co., set me back on the right track.

Hopefully, this will help others piecing together their Ditzenberger heritage.

Correction: A family record indicates Wesley (Jacob Wesley --the younger--Ditzenberger) died as early as 17 Apr 1908, which suggests Ruby (see post above) and Wesley died of same causes?

Who was Ruby Ditzenberger, buried near Wesley Ditzenberger, Alva Municipal Cemetery in Alva, Woods Co., Oklahoma? Cemetery records indicate she died 13 Apr 1908.

Wesley (husband of Capatola V. Eller) died in 1909 before the birth of his daughter, Myrtle, but who was Ruby laid to rest before him?

I'm looking at the vast number of Ditzenbergers, searching for a cousin named Ruby, but haven't found a candidate for her yet. Anyone have a Ruby D., died 1908, OK?

@goodbubbles

Those links have either been removed or updated. I can tell you what I know about the Catherine Ditzenberger, daughter of Jacob Wesley Ditzenberger, who is in my lineage. I believe she has been confused with another Catherine, who died relatively young.

Catherine Ditzenberger, born 1848, died after 1930 (There are census records for her up to 1930, which you can see attached to my public family tree.) I also have a photo of her as an aged woman (probably taken at one of the Ditzenberger reunions).

Catherine's father was Jacob Wesley Ditzenberger of Germany, an immigrant. He eventually settled in Eagle, Boone, IN. He married Mary Elizabeth MOORE, mother of their seventeen children (not all who lived to maturity).

Catherine's husband was Dietrich GLANDER, and they had two children, Henry and Ada.

It is easy to become confused among the large number of Ditzenbergers, and I hope this helps.

I am also a descendant of the Ditzenbergers through Henry Linguen. I have some information on the siblings of that generation, including a wonderful photograph posted to my "Sparlin Family Tree."

If anyone is interested, I'd be happy to make them a guest of my site so they can pluck information and the photo.

My great-grandfather was Wesley Jacob Ditzenberger, who died young in 1909. I have many questions about his widow, my g-grandmother, and her family. If anyone has information on Capatola Viola nee Eller born Okla territory (1887-1956) or the Nick Eller family through letters, photos, bibles, etc., I'd be very interested.

1860 U. S. Federal Census Eagle Township, Boone, Indiana, M 653 Roll 245 Page 778.

1870 U. S. Federal Census Eagle Township, Boone, Indiana, M 593 Roll 300 Page 85.

I rechecked these censuses to make sure I had everything correct. The only thing I found was that the mother/wife's name was shown as Mary & not Catherine. It could be Mary was a middle name (German's are notorious for having multiple christian names). Also, I've found many persons officially named Mary have been nicknamed (& shown in census records as) Polly. Same with Sarah as Sally/Sallie, etc. so when I saw Mary, I thought it was another name for Catherine that she used. In 1860, William Nelson was shown as William N.

Note for father Jacob: 1860 U. S. Federal Census states born in Hanault. 1870 U. S. Federal Census states born in Hesse. 1870 U. S. Federal Census Index listed as Jac DITZENBERGER.

Another habit German families had was to name multiple children with the same name if the previous child died. Makes research more challenging to find the same name with multiple birth dates! That's what I thought (& got confused over) about the 2 Conrad's.

I have marriage records for:

Francois Basilie This to Catharine Ditzenberger.

Frank M. Thies ro Clara Elizabeth Hart.

Francois Basilie This to Justine Nurdine.

John Baptiste Thomas and Amelia This.

Please feel free to contact me at slimkim@gci.net anytime.
I am slimkim the author of the first tree. I got everything I know from census records that are shown on each persons individual page so everything can be verified by checking those. I also have a marriage record for Catherine DITZENBERGER & Francois Basilie THIS. Their son, Francois Martin, married my great grand aunt Clara. I also have their marriage record. Their daughter, Catherine, married John B. SCHRANTZ 14 Mar 1885 in St. Clair co. Illinois. Francois Basilie married 3 times & had 9 children that I know of. 2 with Catherine & 7 with 2nd wife Marie Rose GRENOUILLET. 3rd wife, Justine NURDINE (nee' FINLEY/FINDLEY) had children from previous marriage, but none that I know of with Francois Basilie.

Sometimes people will go with their first (or christian) names in 1 census and middle names in another. I did the best I could with what the censuses provided.
I think I have confused myself. If someone could please assist me in untangling this mess in my head it would be greatly appreciated.

So, my third great grandmother is Catherine Ditzenberger. She was the first wife of Francois (Frank) Basilie This in 1863. They lived in St. Clair, IL. She passed away in 1866.

I have been searching for her family. Everything I have been able to find or have been told is that Jacob Ditzenberger is her father. When it comes to her mother is when I get confused. Instead of trying to explain it too much I am going to include links to two different trees.

http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op...

http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op...

Very similar trees but yet different. Are these supposed to be the same Jacobs? If so, how is that possible? But if not, how can there be so many coincidences? Is there some sort of information crossing here? I'm trying to figure out where I belong. Maybe I've just gone over this too many times & am confusing myself now. Can anyone help? If so, THANK YOU in advance!

Dear Pat,
So glad to hear from anyone so quickly. I just started looking into my ancestory last month. I have only been able to get back about 5 generations. I don't know who Jean is, but I have seen her name alot on the net. Not sure if she is the same Jean, something to do with animal services in Indiana. I have learned that most of the Ditzenberger's still live in the midwest area. I did find a pic of Mary Ditzenberger, not sure if she is the same one married to Jacob though.
I live in New Mexico, and have five children. I have four sisters, Charla Dee, Diane E, and Darlene K. And my little sister patricia died when she was an infant. My email address is debditz44@yahoo.com. I am looking forward to finding out how Jean fits in the Ditz. line as well. Thank you for your quick response, I noticed that some of the messages on the board have been there for quite some time.
Sincerely, Debra Ditzenberger

Hi I'm a descendant of Charles Agustus Ditzenberger. I just started looking into my family line and finding out alot of interesting things. Charles A. was my Great Great Grandfather, who had a son named George Jacob Ditz. 7-19-1864. George J. was my Granfathers father. My Grandpa was George Jr. and he was the sweetest man I have ever known. He died in feb. 1978 the same year I had my first child. My father's name was Charles Roland Ditzenberger. I lost him this year on feb. 17th 2004. I don't know why, but he isn't on the list of children for George jr. I will try to figure out how to update that info. I hope I have been helpful on your search. Oh also I have learned that My gr.gr.gr.Grandfather Jacob, came from Haunalt Germant, and that the name Ditzenberger was spelled differently in Germany. Diesenberger. Good luck with your search on the family line! As Always, Debra H Ditzenberger
