Timothy Dix (1710-1813) & Abigail Wilkins (1772-1808); who married 29 May 1826, Catharine Waine Morgan there were at least seven children born to this union.
There is a photo of his burial place on Find A Grave...
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=58...

One of the Family Trees on Ancestry has a PDF document of the newspaper article regarding his service to the military, to the political positions he held, and his illness the night he passed.
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/18306270/person/1090378891/me...

OBITUARY Pub. Thursday, April 30, 1879: GEN. JOHN A. DIX, died in New York City on Monday evening of last week, at the age of eighty-one. The career of Gen. Dix, was one of marked distinction, both in military and civil life. It falls to the lot of but a few men to be in public service for forty years. Gen. Dix, a son of a Revolutionary soldier, was born in New Hampshire, and at an early age was appointed ensign in a regiment. He had always been an anti-slavery man, and at the breaking out of the war, espoused the Union cause. During the war he distinguished himself as a Major General of volunteers, and subsequently was sent as Minister to France and was elected Governor of New York. Through all he retained the undiminished confidence and esteem of his fellow men, and bears to his grave an untarnished name, and a reputation for sturdy patriotism.
Source: The Herald And Torch Light Newspaper, Hagerstown, Washington Co., MD

Biography:
Dix, John A., major-general, was born in Boscawen, N. H., July 24, 1798, and received his early education at the academy at Salisbury, at the Phillips Exeter academy, and the College of Montreal. As a boy of fourteen he entered the war of 1812 as a cadet in his father's regiment the 14th U. S. infantry, stationed at Baltimore, Md., where he also studied at St. Mary's college. He was made ensign in 1813, took part in the operations on the Canadian frontier, served subsequently as adjutant to Col. Walback, and in 1819 was appointed aide-decamp to Gen. Jacob Brown, then in command of the northern military department of the United States and stationed at Brownsville, where he studied law. He was later prepared for the bar in Washington, under William West, but did not practice there, and in 1826 was sent as special messenger to the court of Denmark. On his return he was stationed at Fort Monroe, but ill health led him to practice law in Cooperstown, N. Y., and he subsequently held various important positions in that state. He was adjutant-general of the State of New York, secretary of state and superintendent of public schools, a prominent member of the "Albany Regency," and then, going out of office in 1840 by the defeat of the Democratic party, devoted himself to literary pursuits, being editor-in-chief from 1841 to 1843 of "The Northern Light." He was elected member of the state assembly in 1841, spent two years abroad, was United States senator from New York from 1845 to 1849, and in 1848, was the candidate on the Free-Soil Democratic ticket for governor of New York, but was overwhelmingly defeated by Hamilton Fish. He was appointed assistant treasurer at New York by President Pierce, and was the choice of the president as minister to France, but was never nominated, owing to political opposition. He earnestly supported Buchanan and Breckenridge in the canvass of 1856, and opposed the election of Lincoln in 1860, voting for Breckenridge and Lane. He was appointed by President Buchanan postmaster of New York to succeed Isaac V. Fowler, defaulter, declined the portfolio of war in that president's cabinet, and on Jan. 9, 1861, accepted the place of secretary of the treasury. It was while in this office that he sent the historic message to Lieut. Caldwell at New Orleans, to arrest the commander of the revenue cutter, adding to the message: "If anyone attempts to haul down the American flag, shoot him on the spot." At the opening of the Civil war he rendered effective service as president of the Union defense committee in New York, from its formation in 1861, and on April 24 of that year presided over the great meeting in Union Square which determined the attitude of the metropolis and of the entire North in reference to supporting the new administration. On the president's call for troops he organized and sent to the front seventeen regiments, and was appointed by Gov. Morgan one of the four major-generals of state troops. In the following June he was commissioned by President Lincoln major-general of volunteers, and was ordered to Washington by Gen. Scott to take command of the Arlington and Alexandria department. He was ousted from this post by political intrigue and given command of the Department of Maryland, which was then considered of comparatively minor importance, but which became later the center and key of the national position, and it was through Gen. Dix's energetic and judicious measures that the city and state were prevented from espousing the Confederate cause. He was sent from Baltimore to Fortress Monroe in May, 1862, and in June, 1863, was in command of a force of 10,000 men, in the movement up the York river to the White House, where he succeeded in cutting off Lee's line of communication with the Confederate capital, and in destroying bridges capturing Confederate troops, including Gen. W. H. F. Lee, and obtaining control of the whole country between the Pamunkey and Rappahannock rivers. Then, when the city of Richmond was almost within his grasp, he was ordered to fall back and send all his available troops to the defense of Washington and the Pennsylvania border, then threatened by the combined Confederate forces. After the trouble connected with the draft riots in New York, he was transferred to New York, in command of the Department of the East, superseding Gen. Wool, and he held this post until the close of the war, his energetic action preventing further trouble in the metropolis and restoring business confidence. He was the first president of the Union Pacific railroad company, and in 1866 was appointed U. S. naval officer of New York, and in the same year, minister to France. He returned to America on the accession of President Grant in 1869, was elected governor of New York in 1872, but in 1874, owing to political intrigue in the Republican party, was defeated of reelection. He became president of the Erie railroad company in 1872. Gen. Dix died in New York city, April 21, 1879.
Source: The Union Army, vol. 8; "U.S. Civil War Soldier Records and Profiles" available on Ancestry . com.
Hello Janet,

Mary Lois Golden was my great- grandmother. In fact, she had five children. There was another son called Edward who died in an unfortunate accident as a child.

My grandmother was the eldest, Mary Lois Dix, who was born in 1883. She used to talk a lot about her parents and what life was like growing up in London in the 1890's.

It sounds as if your great-grandfather would have been her uncle.

It's really nice to read your message but as you sent it six years ago I don't know if you will receive this reply.

I do hope so.

Best wishes,

Penny

Solomon and Betsy (Loomis) Dix, 1840 Windham Co., VT

Looking for info on their children. In the 1840 census in Windham, Vermont there are 5 children listed. I have found info on Almeda, Elmina and John E. but am unable to find Jerusha or a male born between 1825-1830. I am trying to see if Jerusha married a Putnam/Putman. In the 1880 census of Centerville, Crawford,Pennsylvania...Betsy is listed next door to her daughter ( Stephen and Almeda Atherton)Betsy indexed under the last name DIRE (but if you look further down the page at the name COX the "x" is the same)Betsy is listed with her grandson John Putnam. He is also listed with her in the 1870 census (Athens, Crawford, Pennsylvania) but he is listed as a DIX. Her son John E. was supposedly killed in the war and was older.John's father is listed as being born in NY and mother in VT.Any help is appreciated! Thanks.julie

I'm looking for family of a Noah Dix who served in the Pacific during WWII. I have a number of my dad's old pictures (without names) and the name Noah Dix is in one of his disability letters. He may have been from Oregon or Washington. I would appreciate any help I can get identifying the people in these pictures.

Does anyone have any information on the Dix family in Plymouth/Stoke Damerel from 1800 onwards. Key person is Amos Dix from Co. Clare (married Mary Berry in 1824). He had 3 children who survived (John Amos b. 1825, Edward James b. 1826 & Frances b. 1837). My line is from John Amos Dicks, whoes eldest daughter Mary Ann Dicks married John Easton in 1866
Thank you for the reply to my message board query about the Dix DNA tests. I haven't had the test but would like to sometime as I have had no luck in tracing my Dix lineage. I'm at a stone wall and thought the test might be an option to finding more. Not sure if you have viewed my "tree" but my direct male to male to male lineage is Dix, as my great grandfather Dix was adopted out and we've been Mentzer's ever since. I'm assuming you are a Dix, too. Thanks again and good luck with your research!

Send me your email address (I am wordwizdix@comcast.net), and I will send you the Bolles genealogy chart that tracks from 1880 back all Anthony decendants up to that time. I am descended from Anthony-John-Jonathan-Timothy-Timothy-John Adams-Morgan-John Adams-Dennis. Are you a Dix or other? I look forward to hearing from you.

I did the ancestry Paternal Lineage Test (Y-46). Have the results, which can be cross referenced to other with matching sequences on ancestry.com. Not had and close matches, the nearest MRCA is 9, which could be a link from between 7-15 generations, although we don't share the same surname. I've only pushed back 8 generations on the Dix surname, so the link might be more distant - hard to confirm at present.

I suppose it's a matter of time, as more people participate, I might get a closer match.

Mrs. Esther L. Norman Dix 1913-2010 Zanesville, Ohio

WINCHESTER, VA: Mrs. Esther L. Norman Dix, of Winchester, VA, formerly of Zanesville, OHIO, died Saturday, October 23, 2010, at Westminster Canterbury finding her "soft place to land".

If Esther had a theme song, it would be ACCENTUATE THE POSITIVE, ELIMINATE THE NEGATIVE. She would most like to be remembered by her favorite phrase: A JOY THAT IS SHARED IS A JOY MADE DOUBLE.

Esther was born in Zanesville, Ohio,(Muskingum County) in 1913, the daughter of Imri and Mary Norman.

She graduated with honors from Zanesville (Lash) High School in the Class of 1931.

She then attended Wittenberg College in Springfield, Ohio, and returned to Zanesville, Ohio where she joyfully taught for 38 years.
At age 50, she was proud to earn her bachelor's degree from Muskingum College. Esther taught not only elementary students but also instructed many teachers in workshops at local colleges throughout her long tenure as an educator.

Esther married David C. Dix on July 8, 1942, before he served in England and France during WWII.

At first, the marriage was kept a secret since female teachers in Ohio were not allowed to continue teaching if they had married. The local school board, however, met in special session and changed the rule, which resulted in statute revisions across the state of Ohio and the country. She was honored as a Martha Holden Jennings Scholar for "outstanding and creative teaching", inspiring many students, including her two daughters, Mary K. and Susan to become educators.

After her retirement, Esther loved working as a receptionist and school tour guide at the Zanesville Art Center and as a volunteer at Bethesda Hospital.
She was a member of the Muskingum County Community Foundation, the Beaux Arts Club, the Pioneer and Historical Society, the All Around Club, and Grace United Methodist Church in Zanesville. At age 92, she became a member of First Presbyterian Church in Winchester.

Esther was preceded in death by her husband, David; by her sisters, Kathryn, Eleanor, and Virginia; and by her brother, William Imri "Bill" Norman.

She is survived by daughter, Mary K. Armstrong and her husband, Dr. Jack Armstrong of Winchester, Virginia daughter, Susan Dix Clymer and her husband, Carl Clymer of Atlanta, Georgia; five grandchildren, Andrew J. Armstrong, Matthew C. Armstrong, Katherine E. Armstrong, Jessica Clymer Smith, and Brent Clymer; six great grandchildren, Hannah, Ian, and Drew Armstrong, Ethan, Olivia, and Adam Smith.

A celebration of Esther's life via her "Bon Voyage" will be held on Friday, November 27, 2010, from 4:00 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. at the Armstrong Residence, Launchris Drive. Interment will be in Zanesville Memorial Park in Zanesville, OHIO.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Esther N. and David C. Dix Family Scholarship Fund at Shenandoah University, 1460 University Drive, Winchester, Virginia 22601-5195, or Grace United Methodist Church 516 Shinnick St, Zanesville, OH 43701-3675

Local arrangements are being handled by Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, Winchester, Virginia.

Please view obituaries and tribute wall at www.ompsfuneralhome.com.

Published in the Times Recorder, Zanesville, Ohio on October 26, 2010
Stepney (later Rocky Hill), Connecticut Church records, 1805

This area was originally part of Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut where the Leonard Dix line emigrated in about 1644. My third great grandfather George (1783), son Elisha, is said to have "possibly" been the G. Dix who married Olive Hubbard in 1805. It cites Stepney Church Records. The info is from "Families of Ancient Wethersfield" and there are mistakes there, such as the one that makes Edward Dix of Watertown the father of Leonard when Edward would have been eight years old. FHL does have a record of the marriage. I can't find the Stepney Church records. There are some other databases for up to 1800. I'd really like to verify this connection before I claim Olive as an ancestor.

I would appreciate any info anyone might have,

Sue P.

Alan - I think there are some conflicts with my records. The original Anthony Dix arrived in 1623 at Plymouth on the ship Ann and drowned in a shipwreck off Cape Cod 15 Dec 1636. HE was married to Tabitha. Anthony had a son Anthony d. 24 Mar 1666 (no birth date or other data available). I recently ran into some of HIS descendants for which I have no information nor did I realize they even existed. I hope this clears up a few dates and persons?

Hi,

I believe I am also related to this Anthony Dix. The Anthony Dix in my family tree was born about 1635 and died in 1676 in Massachusetts. His wife's name was Tabitha and His daughter was Mary who was born in 1655 and married William Barker. The Anthony Dix born about 1635 was as far back as I could trace that line of my tree. If this is the same man this will extend things back at least one more generation.

As your message on Ancestry.co.uk is about 7 years old, this may not reach you, so I'll keep it short!
I have a large family tree which relates to the Dixon family. I have established that they originally were the 'Dix' family and had lived in N.E. Norfolk for centuries. I don't expect our tree to be related of course, but I was interested to find that you have a Mary Howlett in the late 1700's, who was probably the sister to my Eleanor Howlett, b 1778, I think in Trunch, but quite probably could have been in Antingham.
Anyway this may not reach you, so conatct me if you wish to continue a conversation.

Isaac Dix and Polly Metcalf

I'm looking for information on Isaac Dix and Polly Metcalf who were married August 6, 1803. I believe they were married in Accomack Virginia, but am not positive. I believe her father was Thomas Metcalf, but am wanting to confirm. Would appreciate any information on this family.

I found a Revolutionary War Bounty Record for Thomas Metcalf that listed him as deceased, but that Isaac Dix was his heir because of a marriage to Thomas' daughter.

Hello, Richard

Bernie Guymer has done extensive research on the GUYMER surname in the Norfolk region. Take a look at his Web page:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~guymer/

My GUYMERs are mostly from the Catton - Norwich area. Many of them worked for Coleman's as did the DIXes.

Regards
Ros
