this is long. My Aunt Betty is looking for Rebecca Jane Dobson Fields family.
I have found Martha J or I "Mattie" Dobson Davis' death certificate and her granddaughter who has hit the same wall as I have.

The death cert lists father as Frank Dobson and mother as ?? Love. There are several Frank, Francis,Franklin plus others with a middle name of Frank.

I can not find a Dobson - Love connection except a Joseph Y Love was bondsman for Catherine Dobson Guinn. She wanted to know why the father John Dobson didn't do this?
Rebecca, Martha and Salina Dobson were living in the hh of Rebecca Self. 1880 Martha was listed as a cousin to John R Self. Agnes Dobson married Jesse Self and her father is John Dobson.

Mary Carson said a Becky Dobson is pictured in Richard Doughty's Greeneville 100 year Portrait (1775 - 1875) with Rev. Joseph Dobson's daughter. Mary thought that Rebecca was Rev. Joseph's niece. Tennie Dobson married J Lyons. Aunt Betty had the Lyon Family book and Tennie Lyons moved to FL. like Betty's father. Both were in the printing business.

Salina Dobson also lived with her sister in law, Jenny Whitney and her daughter Mary. Jenny Dobson married Benjamin Whitney. Jenny, Mary and Benjamin are all buried in Oak Grove Cemetery as were Rebecca and her son Harry.
Rev Joseph's brother David M had a son Franklin and a daughter Jane C "Jennie" but their dates don't match. His brother Isaac doesn't have any children with the right names

Aunt Betty remembers a Clyde Dobson in FL. I found Jason Clyde Dobson that lived in the right place. He died in 1956 according to the SS death list. Someone said his father was James F s/o Azariah s/o Samuel & Margaret Copeland s/o Joseph & Mary Getty Dobson. Margaret Copeland wasn't married to Samuel but Silas. Not sure about the Azariah data.

Mary Carson said Rev Joseph was the grandson of Joseph and Mary Getty Dobson.

Hello,

Thanks for the reply - sorry it's taken so long to respond!! This William's grandparents were Myles Dobson (originally probably from Ulverstone, later lived in Luton) and Francys Stebbings. I have the line confirmed through wills, parish registers and other documents, so unfortunately this isn't the same family, although undoubtedly they will have been related to Richard and Isabel somehow. I've not yet worked out who Myles's parents were, although he had a brother, William, who worked for Queen Elizabeth, and a sister, Margaret.

Kind regards
RFJ

Nothing on the Indian blood, I've got plenty in other lines, but none in the Dobson line. Concerning Ellen Vinson/Vincent. I have seen her name, just the other day, but it was Vincent not Vinson. OK, no wonder why she was a mystery for me. Did she die in Kings Co. CA 1954? Was her mom and dad, George and Mary? Let me do a little looking, the name change makes a big difference. See, this was my mistake, held me up for some time. Just your message made the door open.

OK. Carroll's parents were: John Dobson and Mary Noble, m in KY. When John died Mary remarried to Vineyard, thats where Vineyard comes in. John recieved a grant of land for his service in the war of 1812. He faught on the Canadian boarder. There 2 sources for this: 1. There is a BLM land patent where it was sold by Mary Vineyard in MO. 2. There is a claim he filed due to loosing his horse, and claimed the gov owed him an amount of money. The sale of land was in the late 1830 or early 1840, I forget exactly. Wondering why the moving around so much, or how they end up where they do? 1850 St. Francois Co. MO census shows Mary Vineyard and the boys, Jefferson and Carroll. What most don't realize is next door is Nancy with Lewis McCoy and family.

If you look at the 1850 and 1860 census for Wm P. Witt, I don't think there is any question. Have you reviewed my tree on Ancestry? It has all of that info. I have sent emails to Betty Stewart, Lola Martin and June Johnson with no responses. I am particularly interested in Carroll's Probate file. I am unaware of such a doc. Also, Malinda remarried a John Carroll in the 1890, in Miller Co. I have found all of Carroll's children and followed them trough the census records. What line are you from or which child are you from?

Merlene

Here is the info I was looking for. I knew I saw it somewhere. When looking for Malinda Witt, many years ago, this is why I eliminated your Malinda. The following is a same of the 1860 Illinois census for Wm P. Witt.
------------------------------------------------------------

Here's the link for the image:
http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=View&r=an&dbid=...

Name: Wm P Witt
Age in 1860: 51
Birth Year: abt 1809
Birthplace: Illinois
Home in 1860: Eastern, Greene, Illinois
Gender: Male
Post Office: Carrollton
Value of real estate: View image
Household Members: Name Age
Wm P Witt 51
Marinda Witt 39
Nancy Witt 21
Rebecca Witt 19
Melinda Witt 17
Emily Witt 15
Matilda Witt 14
Marr E Witt 12
Laura D Witt 10
Kansas N Witt 6
Martha Witt 3
John M Aine 13
James Sap 10
James Brown 28
Patrick Cratrick 20
John Allen 33
Amanda Allen 30
Martha Allen 10
Mantha Allen 8
Nancy Allen 6
Sarah Allen 4
Eliza Allen 1

___________________________________________________________

As you can see in this census, Malinda is 17 yrs old, and unmarried, with her family in ILL. By this time my Malinda was married and had John Jefferson Dobson. I think this is undisputable in favor of Arthur Witt being Malinda's father.

Merlene, I can not find any docs that puts your Malinda in MO. All I have found is she never left Illinois. Here's another little tidbit.
___________________________________________________________

40. He died Unknown [1].
Freeman J Mains and Malinda Witt. She married Freeman J Mains. They were married on 25 Nov
1885 in Greene County, Illinois [1]. Marriage License in # 1754 [1]. They had no children.
____________________________________________________________

The Malinda in the preceding doc is William P. Witt's Malinda. This Malinda was born and died in Illinois.

My Malinda, after Carroll's death in 1889, married John Carroll in Miller Co. in the 1890, as documented in Miller Co. marriage records. Although I can't find John and Malinda in the 1900 census. All indications show them living out their life in Miller Co. Also, Carroll's Civil War Pension app shows Malinda having remarried to John Carroll.

Here are some of the arguements aginst William Penny Witt being Carroll Dobson's, Malinda Witt's father.
____________________________________________________________

William Penny Witt-7 (John Witt-6, Elijah Witt-5, Lavinia Harbour-4, Sarah Witt-3, Anne
Rogers-2, John Rogers-1) [1]. He was born on 23 Apr 1808 in Tennessee [1]. He died on 27 Dec
1869 in Rockbridge, Greene Co, Illinois

Notes for Rebecca Perry:
General Notes:
Peggy Perry Oliver says William Penny Witt had 6 children by his forst wife Rebecca Perry.
[Loftis.FTW]

Peggy Perry Oliver says William Penny Witt had 6 children by his fourth wife Rebecca Perry.

William Penny Witt and Rebecca Perry. He married Rebecca Perry. They were married on 20 Aug
1829 in Greene County, Illinois. Marriage License in # 310.

They had 9 children.
Malinda Witt [1]. She was born on 23 Apr 1843 [1]. She married Edward S.
Vallentine. They were married on 29 Mar 1867 in Greene County, Illinois. She
died on 19 Jun 1922 [1].

According to this report, there were no children born in Missouri, none ventured to Missouri. Most if not all siblings died in Illinois.

Considering the age of your Malinda as 1843 and the verified marriage of Carroll and Malinda in 1856 Miller Co. MO, she would have been 13 years old. I know they married young, but 13 is way young even for those times. Also the marriage certificate shows Malinda being older than 13.

Historical records show Arthur Gilbert Witt being in Missouri about 1843, as shown by the births of his children, and remained there throuh the 1880 census.
These are some of the arguements for Arthur Witt being the father of Carroll Dobson's wife, Malinda Witt.

Yes, Carroll, Colvin, and Hunsucker were in the same unit. I have Carroll's service record and pension app. While in Helena AR, Carroll was charged with disertion. That was due to his many trips and stays in the hospital, while in Helena. Typical of health issues at that time. Be very carefull of assuming unit battles with soldier partisipation. I would be very interested in information Lola martin may have with respect to Carroll's "PROBATE" file. At the time of his death, Carroll was in Paw Paw, Sequoyah Co. OK. As stated in his pension app, I will review it and see if he was resident there, if so what would MO probate have to do witth anything. BLM or GLO states he recieved a land grant for his service or puchased it. That certificate was soldafter his death. If you wish to discuss any of these issues, please reply or drop ma a line at, LBocoon@sbcglobal.net
Just looking over old messages, and came across this one. I feel, from my research this issue of Arthur Witt VS William Penny Witt, is pretty cut and dried. Arthur Witt is Malinda's father. There are too many facts which require streaching to fit.

It's been a long time since your post so this is a long shot. Any chance the photo is still available? Malinda Dobson Kennedy Armstrong was my great great grandfather's sister. I've been able to trace her line back to living relatives. I'd love a copy of it if it still exists, and I'd be happy to get it to her direct descendants.
Thanks,
Renmani Dobson
renmani at usa.net

Hi! Yes, we are certainly related. I have transcribed the parish registers of Kilbride Parish (officially, Enorily) near Arklow, Co Wicklow and have been struggling to connect all the rellies!
Alicia O'Neill's parents were Richard O'Neill & Ellen Prestege (spelt in many ways, but the same name & same family) and she married Thomas Dobson from whom you, Sue Hood, Dianne Payne & Elissa Nimmo are descended - Richard O'Neill's parents were Arthur O'Neill and Ellen Prestidge (I believe mother-in-law & daughter-in-law were aunt & niece.
I am descended from Alicia's brother Arthur O'Neill who married twice:
1. Susan Manley
2. Elizabeth (Eliza) Frances Stringer, daughter of James Stringer - who was certainly related to all the other Stringer!
Getting complicated? This is typically Irish!
The O'Neill's were members of the Church of Ireland and descended from the Great Hugh O'Neill of Ulster! Granny Massey used to trace it sitting by the fire, but nobody bothered writing it down!
To complicate matters even further my grandmothers were sisters - daughters of Arthur O'Neill and Eliza Stringer as above. Another sister, Elizabeth Frances married Thomas Dobson, nephew of Alicia O'Neill & Thomas Dobson. Later there daughter Sarah married Johnny Prestage a direct descendant of the two Prestage ladies a few generations back!!!
I have the peculiarity of being related to every Protestant family that was in Arklow and the surrounding area. As my parents did not speak of the past - for all sorts of reasons! - my eight sisters, two brothers & I grew up not knowiing our relatives other than those of Mum & Dad's brother & sisters and the Dobsons who still live at Ballinacor.
My grandmothers' only brother emigrated to New Zealand in mysterious circumstances and died at Matamata so the O'Neills appear to have died out - but greatgranddad and Susan Manley had two children who were ostracised by the 2nd wife (not unusual) and were never spoken of - they probably have descendants!
I am now trying to match those parish records I have not yet connected up and adding the information I have gleaned from you and others.
I am married to a retired dairy farmer who isn't really retired and am an Anglican priest of the Church of Ireland. This family tree gets attention sporadically.
Barbara Fryday
Hi Julie,
Glad to see you back on board, same as me. Regarding Dobson, Aunty Alice said that Mary definately was born in Tasmania but her grandmother Alice Catherine and the others would say they were New Zealanders, (may be because of the stigma) also there was a lot of travel along the coastlines and to New Zealand with the sealers and maori's were brought back to Tasmania. My brother has uncovered that John William Dobson's real name is Jobson and went by the names John or William Dobson/Jobson. Heidelberg Primitive Methodist Mission is where Ledgerwood children were placed by Charles after Mary died. There's articles on the Web. Watery Gully (now Wattle Glen) is where they lived. One daughter Louisa was blind and died in a "lunatic Asylum" according to birth certif. My 2 aunties remember quote a lot. All the best ... Pauline Howell
Regards. Pauline Howell....

Barbara,

I think you are related to my wife but I'm not positive from reading the posted narratives so far... My wife has an ancestor, Robert Dobson from Wicklow, who emigrated to the United States (Greenwich, Connecticut)with his wife Sarah Anne O'Neil (also in records a Nieal and O'Neill) in about 1870. Their daughter Eleanor was born in in 1868 in Ireland and they left at when she was age 2 ... Their other children, (Alicia - 1871, Thomas - 1873, Robert - 1876, William - 1878) were born in the States. There has also always been great confusion about religion. Supposedly one was catholic and one protestant, she was supposedly from a wealthier family, and he worked for her parents, and that was part of the reasons for emigration...

I am researching this connection to your narratives after being contacted by Sue Hood in New Zeeland who has given us information that makes us sure that there has to be a connection but we are not yet sure how it really fits.

Sue believes that our Robert Dobson (USA) is the brother of her Thomas Dobson (NZ) both sons of Alicia Dobson nee (?)... This is a timeline that works, and the family names of children and grandchildren feel right...

Can you help ?

Bob Nimmo

Hi,
Have you come across Bettie Dobson?
b.16Oct1872
m.16Nov1890 George Warren Sanders
d.31May1938

She married George W. Therefore, I think that 1872 is more accurate, marrying 1 month after her 18th birthday.

I can't figure out who her parents are.
If you can help, I'd really appreciate it!

Ruth (ziarefnew)
Joseph DOBSON m. to Sarah

searching for the line of a Joseph DOBSON son of Capt DOBSON and Mary MCKAY. Joseph was to have m a Sarah. At this time I have been unable to locate a last name for her. Hoping someone out there might know of this union.
My line is through their son Joseph Green DOBSON who was m, to Mary Simmons PLEDGER.
Often wondered if Green might be his mother's maiden name.
Thank you for any help with this line.
kim

Referencing Ida Violet Small Speicher

I am a grandson of Ida Small. I hail from the Speicher side of this. My father, Donald Leroy was about 2 yrs old (born in 1933)when his mother Violet died. He had no recollection of his mother.

This info was never shared by my father. I am not sure if he knew. This is quite surprising.

I also visited the "Find a Grave" site that was posted and found it very educational.

Feel free to email me. pspike36@aol.com.
Dobson's of Miller Co. Missouri

OK Dobson people and etc.... As previously mentioned, I am about to take a knife to my wrists over the 1850-60-70 and census of Miller Co. The Dobson's are so fragmented. It appears we have 5 or 6 seperate families, maybe more, ultimately moving into the Miller Co. area. Some of the families are obviously related, traceable ie Davidson, Scott, and Witt. But there are others such as Nichols, with Dobson's living within the family with no obvious connection. Also there are Dobson's such as Elizabeth who is single and older, 65 or so with no connection. So, I'am starting my own little project. I am going to connect these people. Hopefully the Aztec's are wrong leaving me with plenty of time.

Re: Jefferson and Carroll Dobson

Hello all you Dobson people. I've been away for, what seems forever. In "09" I fell and damaged my worthless legs. I have just began to walk, all be it poorly. Anyway I see someone confirmed what I thought all along, good job. John was Mary's husband and the father of Nancy, Jefferson, John Jr. Carroll and Martha. If you follow this family's 1st male was allways names John, which confirms my thoughts.

To Joseph: In a message you wrote, concerning Nancy Dobson, Carroll's sister, you stated that Nancy married an SM Church. I also spent a large amount of time looking for this line. You stated Nancy md Church in 1846. This is not possible due to the 1850 St. Francois Co. census shows Nancy and Lewis McCoy present, and 1860 Jefferson Co. I'll check for marriage after 1860. Just my observation.

Hi
I don't have a James that I know of. My Dobson's started out in Langdale, Westmorland with Wilson Rawes Dobson b 1846. I havent been able to find out much about him. I have his marraige cert which states his father was Richard Rawes Dobson whom i've never been able to prove. I have some census results which place him in an institution (workhouse) with another dobson William which I think could be his brother???? He married a Mary Lloyd in Liverpool in 1874. They had 2 children Isabella and Joseph.
