Hi there all, remember the fact that there were no women at Jamestowne in the beginning and there was alot of women in the Native American villages. The "proper" English would not have accepted or recognized the copulation of "mixed marriages" or even acknowledged the fact that they were going on.... Unless, Like in Pocahontas, sold out by other Native Americans for the cost of a copper pot/tea kettle, kidnapped, held for ransom for almost a year,
"Christanized" and baptized, married off to a middle class up and comer, [who by the way did what the Virginia Company needed him to do]. Then when she traveled to England and contracted Tuberculosis {sp}, or poisoned by the same Virginia Company officials, who really did not want her to return to Virginia to report what she had seen.
Anyone who was a commoner, was of such little importance to the powers that they would only acknowledge him and his family when he was only one of three to survive till the 1624 Muster of Colonist. Interesting, since John Dods came as a Laborer and made it, when all the Gentlemen and the skilled did not. Family for thought Jan

Exactly--many records were burned during the Civil War. If John Dodds' married a person of color (American Indian), it would not have been recorded, most likely. Pocahontas was an exception as a "princess."

And please notice the apostrophe--which indicates an abbreviation or contraction, as in it's for it is.

I don't believe I am of this Dodson line...I don't believe many of us have been able to find primary source documents back to 1607, in light of wars, and burned court records, and just the lack of records recorded in that time. I did run across this last night though, and wanted to post it for those who may need the information on John Dod's, Jamestown Colony.

From:

"The Living in Virginia - 1623"
John Dod's and wife, Mrs. Dod's

'The Original Lists of persons of quality; emigrants; religious exiles; political rebels; serving......'
p 202 "Musters of the Inhabitants of America"
in "Neck of Land-Corporation of Charles City"
The Muster of the Inhabitants of the Neck of Land in
the Corporation of Charles Cittie in Va., taken the
24th of January 1624.; The Muster of John Dod's
John Dod's aged 36 years in the Susan Constant
April 1607
Jane his wife aged 40 years

p 267 "Patents Granted" "The Corporation of Charles
Cittie"

John Dod's 50 Acres Note: 50 A of land was being
granted to settlers at the rate of 50A per head,
indicating that John Dod's arrived in America alone,
and probably married here.

Hope this helps someone.

Linda

Thanks for writing everyone. My family changed Dodson to Dotson in Kentucky or a bit before--they go by both. My brother, first son back 5 generations that we know, did the DNA test and it came out border country between Scotland and England and then connect to Virginia Dodsons of Richmond. All the 1st sons are named Wm. and then vary middle names. John Dodds' is the 1607 laborer/carpenter on the Susan Constant. John Smith mentions him in his journals, later on, as a soldier. He was no gentleman. He survived the first excusion, and when he married, I doubt it would be recorded. No unions between Native people and English were recorded. For that matter, Crazy Horse's parents' union was not recorded, yet we know from oral history exactly who his parents were. I met a descendant of Boston Custer, by the way, the only surviving Custer brother, who said their family had a Shawnee grandmother. More on this in my book Ghost Stories of the New West (Woodley, 2010). He said that was oral tradition, but I looked up western MD where he said she was from, and sure enough, there had been a Shawnee town there. Wish it were all nailed down for us in documents, but it isn't.

John Dodd (sp?) illiterate Scottish carpenter probably from Northumbria came to Jamestown on Susan B Constant in 1607. "Son" on end of name added later. One of only 50 colonists out of 230 to survive first year. Married the sister of Pocahontas (Nickotek(sp)or Jane Eagle Plume and est. a plantation in Virginia. I am 13th generation Dodson. This is an old family story passed down from father to son. Also, every male given E as middle name...Edward, Edwin, Eugene, etc. for at least 5 generations. Coincidence?

My great-grandmother, Emma Lee Dodson, was born abt 1865 in Tennessee. Her father was supposedly Rolla Dodson, wife Mary? I have found an 1870 US Census showing her & family living in Dunklin Co., MO but nothing before or after. She married my ggrandfather Perry Alonzo Clark in 1883 or so in Graves Co., KY & moved w/him to Weslaco, Hidalgo Co., TX (Lower Rio Grande Valley) in 1919. I have been up against this brick wall for well over a year now & would appreciate any insight you could give me. Email me at suehmosser@yahoo.com, reference Emma Lee Dodson. Thanks for your time. Sue

My name is Johnny Dodson and thanks to ancestry.com and other researchers I have learned a lot about my roots.
My father, Fred was raised by his mother's parents, William A. Morrow and Minnie A. Morrow. I have found lots on the Dodson line, but when it comes to my grandmother Ada George Morrow - Dodson, I haven't had any luck.

If anyone can help me, I would appreciate it. I know there are relatives on both sides that I would love to meet.

And I'm really interested in any pictures or documents that you may have.

A special thanks to Jackie Dodson for his input and information on Ignatious Dodson.

I have been able to get to John Dodson Sr.

My Grandfather was John William Dodson of Magnolia, Arkansas.

Thanks inn advance.
Hi, It's been awhile since I've been on this site. But I'm the poster. I can't remember, but are you on Facebook? I just hooked my Mom up on Facebook, and I thought if you could hook up with her, she could share some family stories with you. (shes 82...I think) She's the daughter of Ivan Elmer Edwards. Ivan was the son of William, and brother to Hiram, Bill, Helen, and Hazel. I'm on Facebook (deb staudt Wandolowski). If your on, contact me, and I'll let Mom know who you are, and to add you. You two can probably share some fun stories. Especially about Her Grandpa...He sounds like he was hysterical.

Looking for anyone connected to the family of William A. & Mary Gallagher Dodson, who are buried in Poplar Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, Ware Shoals, Laurens Co., SC. Mary Gallagher Dodson was born in Philadelphia. She was my adoptive mom's younger sister. Uncle Bill & Aunt Mary had one child, Linda Louise Dodson. I found their burial information on FindAGrave. I know there are several Dodsons buried in the same cemetery, but I don't know if/how they might be related. Any help would be appreciated.
Barb Selletti

No, Janet, I haven't talked with Marge or Frannie, but would love to. The lines you are describing all are familiar, so I know these are being researched too. These are also lines that we hope will tie in with further DNA testing.

It would be great to compare all the information on the Dodsons that we each have, and see if it helps to tie us all together. I'm sure you remember the dilemma with the given names of William, Thomas and John when researching. There were so many of each, it was hard to untangle them all. All our research can be found at the url I posted. There is also an email link on each page for contact.

Do you have a way to contact Marge and Frannie?

Linda

Linda, I haven't looked at your site yet, but have some info for you. Have you ever been in contact with Marge Dodson Lingenfelter or Frannie Schragen-Petras? Both of them have lots of research. Marge is connected to the ones who were in Cambria Co. I believe her ancestor was William, one of the brothers of Michael and John (I think I have that straight). My Thomas was in Bedford Co., Greenfield Twp. near Michael and his family in the 1800 census. I don't remember if I looked for him in 1790 or not, but he probably would have been in the area of Gettysburg then. His wife was supposed to have been Molly Seabrook, and his son was Joseph Seabrook Dodson, b ca 1792 in Chambersburg or Gettysburg (I've seen it both ways). Thomas (and Joseph later, listed as "of Thomas") were in the tax records for Greenfield Twp. A couple of Joseph's daughters married Lingenfelters. His oldest daughter was my ggg-gm, Dorothy, who married Jacob Shaffer, whose family was in Bedford Co. I have a big file on Dodsons, but haven't done much with it in the last couple of years.

Thanks for the suggestion...you know, I think I'll try to get through to him tomorrow. I had forgotten that a Dodson was a mayor in Hollidaysburg, so thank you for jogging my memory. That's a great idea.

I'm curious too...did your Thomas show in a Cumberland County census at one point...memory is slipping on what year..early 1800s maybe? Also, have you found his ancestral line? We've embarked on this overwhelming task of who all the Dodsons we've found in Pa., and at least Frederick County, Md. were, and how they connect (if they connect). He was a mystery to us still.

I'd like to share our site with you...maybe you would have some time to look it over. We tracked Michael of Thomas and Mary, and because of wills of John Evans and William Evans are sure that the Michael in Frederick, Md. was the Michael of Thomas Dodson in Chester. So, we definitely agree there. There were several who moved from Frederick to Bedford, and wound up in different counties as new counties formed. Several allied families from Frederick also moved into Bedford and Fayette Counties with the Dodsons, i.e. Farquhars, Lingenfelters, Justices, Brightwell, and some others.

Thanks again, Janet. Here's the url to the site: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wvpioneers...

Linda

Linda, it is likely that the Michael Dodson living in MD was the son of Thomas and Mary Prigg. He is also probably the Michael Dodson who ended up in the area of East Freedom, Blair Co., PA. My own ancestor, Thomas Dodson, was from the Gettysburg area, and he moved to the East Freedom area himself a few years after Michael, so it is likely they were related, but how is not known. There are still lots of Dodsons in Blair Co., including the mayor of Hollidaysburg. Perhaps if he joined the DNA project the connection between the ones in Blair Co. and the ones further east could be verified. Just a suggestion.

Richard Dodson, b. 1731 and (John) William Dodson, b. 1729 Chester Co., Pa.

Are there any Dodson family members who have proven their line back to either Richard Dodson or his brother, (John) William Dodson, sons of Thomas and Mary Prigg Dodson of Chester County, Pennsylvania? Recently, several descendants of Richard Dodson, Sr., b. 10/23/1752 in Frederick Co., Va. participated in DNA testing, and results have shown that they are genetically linked to Michael Dodson (Doddson, etc.) who lived in Frederick County, Md. We have found significant information to believe that Michael actually was the son of Thomas and Mary Prigg Dodson of Chester Co., Pa., and so brother to Richard and (John) William.

Have any male lineal descendants from either Richard or William Dodson of Chester Co., Pa. participated in DNA studies? Is anyone of those lines considering DNA studies?

Please post. We have a very strong theory, after 30 years of searching, as to who the father of Richard of Frederick Co., Virginia was; however with the records having been destroyed in wars, we are hoping there may be a Chester Co. Dodson, known to be sons of Thomas and Mary Prigg Dodson, who has been or is considering participation in the DNA studies. The DNA study requires that the participant be from an unbroken line of male ancestors of the surname.

It's past time to tie all these Dodsons together if possible. Please post.

Thank you,
Linda Surrett-Johnson

My g-g-g-grandmother was Mary Emily Ann Thorp (1822-aft. 1880), who is listed as the daughter of William Goodhope Thorp (ca. 1795-1869) and Candis Dodson. Candis was born, according to cemetery records, on July 4, 1809, and married to W. G. Thorp in 1821. I suppose that this is not impossible, but it seems highly unlikely. Does anyone have any way of confirming or refuting any of this? They were from Giles Co., TN.

Years ago while researching at the library at the University of New Mexico, I came across a book regarding those rich men who funded the trading companies in Virginia. There was a reference to a Sir (something) Dodson as being a partner in at least one ship that sailed to Virginia. I cannot find my notes now - it has been so long - but if anyone else is curious, maybe looking at who funded the Virginia Trading Company and others that helped pay for that adventure to the New World. Go ahead, see what you can find on that.

I hope you have had an answer to this post before now, yes the Dodson line was and is in Pittsylvania,Va The link to John Dodd of Jamestown has not been proven without a doubt. The Dodson's were in the area very early and that is sourced.

As to slaves it depended on the family member, their wealth and occupation. Some of my line did hold slaves and did not. Some fought on the Union side and others on the South so a general sweeping statement can not be made. Keep looking, lots of info is out there for the Pitt. Dodsons.

Try this link for information on the Dodsons. Lots of information there. The Richmond Dodsons were on it, but it seems Betty may have taken it down. Trust me...she still has it. Her email is at bottom of each page.

We always thought we descended from the Richmond (Charles) Dodsons also. DNA proved that we are genetically linked to Michael Dodson of Maryland. Just do not trust things you find on the internet for your family history UNLESS it is sourced...from other than Ancestry, Family History trees, and even many of those posted online. To be sure of who you are, we all have to make certain everything in our line is sourced/documented/referenced. BTW, we have uncovered what appears to be some serious flaws in Reverend Ege's book. If that's a source, check further for yourself.

Linda Surrett-Johnson http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wvpioneers...

My great grandmother was Emma Lee Dodson, supposedly daughter of Rolla or Rolly Dodson. She was born in Tennessee in 1865 or 1869. She married Perry Alonzo Clark in Graves County, KY, then they moved to TX (Hidalgo Co.) in 1919. She died there in 1932. The only trace I've found is 1870 census for Rolla & Mary Dodson, living in Clay, Dunklin Co., MO with 6 children, one of whom was Emma, age 5. Do any of these names sound familiar? The family appeared to have moved around a lot, as alternating children were born in Tenn., then Missouri, then Tenn., etc.
