I don't know if you are still looking for Doings but your note caught my eye because of the name DeForest. My boyfriend's greatgrandfather was Daniel DeForest Doing born 25Apr1865 in Ripley NY-died 1936 in Warren OH. Any connection?

Shirley,
This is most interesting! The John Doyne/Doying I mentioned before was a grandson of Francis Doyne/Doyen whose father was also a Francis. There are many descendants with the name of Francis. The above John's mother was a Mary, he had a sister, Mary, but his birth is found: Extractions of Vital Records of Vermont, Book M. 1, page 223. Rygate. (FHC Film # 027534). Name spelled DOYNE and DOYEN. Birth 8 Dec 1807 in Ryegate, Vermont. I just looked at the 1850 census for your John Doing, Nancy and son Francis, and see that it gives his birth as New York. So the places and dates don't really match.

I do have another John Doying who was born abt 1813 in Canada, but the birth of his second child Sarah Jane Doying (both children were daughters) is recorded as follows: Birth and bapt. - La Societe de Genealogy des Cantons de l'est Inc. Anglican Church, Sherbrooke [Quebec], says: daughter of John (deceased) and Allis Potter, Kingsey QC". So he is out because he had died previous to your John on the tax rolls and census.

Perhaps we are just grasping at straws, but I have often wondered if the "Doing" names I find are related. Following hunches sometimes results in a good outcome. If nothing else, we might elimanate the possibility of a relationship between the families.

Good luck!
Barbara

Shirley,
I have a John Doyen who was born 8 Dec 1807 in Ryegate, Caledonia, Vermont. He was a nephew of my husbands ancestor James. The "History of Ryegate, Vermont", states: John m. a Miss White at Burlington; removed to Canada, later to Indiana. Serveral children. I have been unable to find any more information about him. However, I know that one of his brothers and two of his sisters that were in Canada for a while, have records in Canada by the name "Doying". And I have seen records for Doying and Doyen with many spelling also - Doin, Dawin, for instance. Another spelling was Doyne.

I think it is possible that this John wound up in Bradford County, PA. What dates do you find John there on the tax lists? Do you know the names of his children? Perhaps there are some family names that I recognize.

Barbara

Barbara, I do not know if there were other spellings for the name Doing, but think there were some variations. Doing/Dowing/Dewing/ were some that I have seen. Someone else who was researching Doing lines thought they may have come from Vermont, but I don't have any proof of that. I do know the first place I can find my Doing line was in Bradford County, Pa. I found my John Doing and David Doing in the tax lists there, and also in the census records. The next place I found them was in Crawford County, Pa. in Cussewago Twp. They were listed in tax lists there, and John Doing is buried there in a small town called Crossingville. I have not been able to trace this line back any further than to Bradford Co., Pa. If you ever find any connection, please let me know.

Shirley

Sorry for not giving the rest of the information that I have. Just caught up in the excitement of the moment. Somewhere in the line of the Doing Family is my Uncle Raymond Doing. I believe he is my father's brother. And if I remember correctly he was married to Lois Doing. They lived South of Painesville and they had two children. Their names slip my memory. Please if anyone has any information email me. Thank You DeForest

Hello, In reply to your Doing message, I am sorry that I have no information that would help you at this point. I have just recently found the father of my "Francis Doing" in Crawford County, Pa. His name is John Doing and he is buried in a tiny cemetery (deserted) in Crossingville, Pa. The 1850 Census confirms this family. Good luck with your search.
