Hello Tammy,

My name is Cletis Dolen, son of Samuel Cletis "Pete" Dolen, Pete being the son of Leonard Basil Dolen and Mary Esther Nida. Leonard being the son of Bulford Willard Dolen and Sarah Ellen Cardwell. Bulford being the son of James Dolen and Parthenia Hensley, which is as much as I know, so far. I have only recently began searching my family line, probably because I'll be turning 50 on May 20th. I'll be in Huntington for 4th July weekend if you want to meet and share information.
Contact me via email dolenfamily@verizon.net or call cell 571-334-2519. If you do not want to make contact, I guess I'll understand...even my own half-brothers avoid contact with me.

The Civil War Diary of Samuel Tibbetts Dolen is housed in the history archives at the University of North Carolina.

Following is the library information:

The Southern Historical Collection at the Louis Round Wilson Special Collections Library
Collection Number: 05190-z
Collection Title: Samuel T. Dolen Diary, 1862-1865
This is a description of archival material held in the Wilson Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Unless otherwise noted, the materials described below are physically available in our reading room, and not digitally available through the World Wide Web.

Abstract
Samuel T. Dolen, born 9 January 1831, in Nicholsville, Ohio, was a private in the 89th Ohio Infantry Regiment, Company F, during the Civil War. Dolen began and ended his time in the service at Camp Dennison, Ohio. He worked as a carpenter and on the Brigade Ambulance Train and saw action in Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, and North Carolina. Samuel T. Dolen's pocket diary covers his service in the 89th Ohio Infantry Regiment from the time he volunteered in August 1862 until he was mustered out in June 1865. Included are almost daily entries documenting the distances he traveled and areas through which he traveled. Although Dolen's regiment missed the battle at Fort Donelson, Tenn., in February 1863, he arrived shortly afterwards and described the dead on the battlefield. He briefly described the burning of Atlanta, Ga., and the Battle of Jonesboro, Ga. After the regiment traveled to Savannah, Ga., it headed to North Carolina where Dolen was involved in skirmishes from Goldsboro to Raleigh. In May 1865, his regiment headed to Washington, D.C., for the Grand Review of the Armies. Dolen wrote about visiting several sites while there. Although most of Dolen's diary concerns the advancement of his regiment, he sometimes briefly mentioned aspects of military life. Also included are song lyrics; what seem to be accounts for Dolen's work as a carpenter; lists of officers and soldiers; and a clothing account. A card of distances, showing distances by railroad between several cities, was enclosed with the diary.
Creator
Dolen, Samuel T., b. 1831.
This has been awhile ago, I think I found it on Heritage Quest and that is a webpage that I think you can only get if your local public library has access to it. In our town our library has a subscription to Heritag Quest so I go to the libraries webpage and find their on line index and then you just use your barcode on your library card to have access to Heritage Quest, that also has many books, plus Rev War information, and census records. Hope this helps.

Then remarried to a Matthews and they also lived in New Mexico. My daddy Donald Dolen does not remember who she married, and I am unanle to find any records.

In the Willard Record (New Mexico), 24 June 1920, Vol. XIII, Issue No. 29:
"Mrs. E. A. Dolen was attacked by a cow one day last week at her home about three miles north of town. According to the best information, we learn that she went to the pasture and started to drive the animal towards the house, at the same time trying to carry a calf just born, which the cow did not seem to like, and dashed against Mrs. Dolen bruising and mauling her about the body causing painful injuries. It is said that the children had teased the cow just before it attacked Mrs. Dolen, but escaped uninjured. Mr. Dolen was away when this happened."

Oren's brother, Levi, settled in Johnson Co, IN, as did another brother, Daniel Emmett Dolen. Their father was Samuel Tibbetts Dolen, author of a famous Civil War diary. They grew up in Clermont Co, Ohio.

For more information, just go to Ancestry.com and look up Samuel Tibbetts Dolen. The family's history is well documented back to its origins in Maine and New Hampshire, and back to England.

My aunt Stella Stone had made a long list of family history which I have, though not as complete or good as I would have liked. Oren had lots of siblings, the oldest born about 1848. The brother (John) had a mine in Mexico. Oren worked in the mines in Colorado where Stella and Bessie were born. I do not have time to provide more at this time, but feel free to email me (be careful on the numbers in the addr). I would be interested in knowing which of the children you descend from.

Where was this bible found? Samuel Tibbetts Dolen had a daughter named Ines, who may have become a Riley. Emmett Daniel (Dan) Dolen, son of Samuel T. Dolen, also named a daughter Ines (by his second marriage in California). Here is pertinent information:
Father: Samuel Tibbetts Dolen, b. 9 Jan 1831, Clermont Co, Ohio
Mother: Caroline Elizabeth Slye, b. 1838, Ohio

Emmett Daniel (Dan) Dolen was born in Clermont Co, OH. Dan married Sallie Freelove Taylor, and they lived near Freelove's parents, in Mooresville, IN. Dan Dolen and his cousin, Wm. Herman Dolen (son of Levi Dolen), married sisters, (Sallie) Freelove and (Viola) Grace Taylor. Levi Dolen had migrated from Clermont Co, Ohio to Johnson Co, Indiana.

Children:
1. Samuel Kenneth Dolen, b. 1892, Mooresville, IN (ancestor, this line)
2. Roy Dolen, b. abt. 1894, Mooresville, IN
3. William Dolen, b. 1900, Mooresville, IN; d. 1902

Dan's wife, Freelove, died at age 30, just months after the death of her baby, William. Sam and Roy were sent to live with Aunt Grace and Uncle Herman, on a farm in Mooresville, IN.

Sometime after Freelove's death at age 30, Dan moved to Yukaipa, in San Bernardino Co, CA, where he owned and operated a grocery store for several years. His two sons, Sam and Roy, were reared by his cousin Herman Dolen and Freelove's sister, Grace Taylor Dolen, who had three children of their own.

In California, Dan remarried and had three children from the second marriage, (all listed in the 1930 CA census):
1. Inez Dolen (named for his sister, Ines Dolen)
2. Carolyne Dolen (named for his mother, Elizabeth Caroline Slye Dolen)
3. William Dolen (named for his brother and his infant son, who died)

Dan's first wife, Sally Freelove Taylor Dolen, died at age 30 - tragic story, well documented.

Caroline Slye, etc. - all documented in my genealogy records.

Please let me know how to get in touch with you.
I was beginning to panic as I could not remember where I had put the copies of these pages and then remembered I had not saved them since it has been over a year since I posted, so then I had to remember where I found the info and thank goodness it came to me. These are just excerpts from a gal who was doing DAR work. I found then on Heritage Quest.com but you either have to have a membership or see if your library has one and it they do then you can use Heritage at home with just your local library number. I would be glad to try to scan them to you if I can figure out how to use my new scanner or if you prefer I can make copies and snail mail them to you.
My home email flden@crestviewcable.com

Peggy, A Celia Fleming copied from the original dairy in 1968 and also extracted this from an old bible with the name "Ines" stamped on its front cover. Births: Samuel T Dolen b. 9th Jan. 1831, Elizabeth C Dolan b. 19th March 1838, formerly Caroline Slye daughter of Wm Slye, born near Williamsburg, Ohio. It lists 5 names with the last name of Riley all born in Ohio. I have been trying to figure out why the Riley name. One boy was named Edwin Dolen Riley born in Bethel, Ohio 8 Feb 1909 so this must all be family. I just happened to run across this looking for some family of mine and found it so interesting that I made copies of it hoping someone would be interested in it..

my grandfather is dying and he is searching for his roots through me, his granddaughter. All we know is his father's name and date of birth..John Francis Xavier Dolen b. 1885... maybe from Iowa or Nebraska..my granfathers father forbid anyone to contact his family and he died in 1963 with the secret of his roots with him. I do know that his wife (Mary Albina Rose ) contacted his mother and John found the letter and burned it and threatened her never to do it again and that was the end of it...We beleive Johns father may have been Nelson, Albert, and he had a sister he talked of named Elsie...my grandfather has had another stroke and we beleive not long for this world..it is his sincerest desire to know his roots..I have been searrching for 3 years to no avail. Any help or info would be great..Tx.

I have been trying to trace my greatgrandfather's family for quite some time, but I can't seem to get any farthey than him and some of his siblings. His name was Oren Dolen born in Ohio in 1870. He married Marhta Beaman 3/6/1895 in Victor, El Paso County, Colorado. He died in an automobile accident 10/23/1941 in Twin Falls Idaho. He had a brother named Levi and two sisters, Sue and Belle. I think he had another brother who owned a mine in Colorado, but I don't know his name. Levi never married and neither did Belle.
Oren and Martha had four daughters and an adopted son. The third daughter died at age 8 days in Mason City, Nebraska.
If anyone knows more about the family prior ot Oren, I would appreciate the information. Thanks
