hello. I am a decendant of Martin Donato through my mawmaw. She was a Jack used to be spelled jacques and her grandmother was a lachappale. Any who, my aunt retired and put together a book. it had the following names in it, nanette st laurant, martin donato, jeane tallifer and many other names. it also includes bio's. The Donato brothers moved to st.landry which is now opelousas and ville platte. They were creoles of color that moved here with other creoles the lemelles and the Semiens. she took it all the way back to slavery. My brother and I were talking about getting in contact with our Donato family and if there have been any family reunions than we would like information on the up and coming reunion. Sorry it has taken me so long to reply, but I had to go back and do some more digging before I responded. What I have found is that Gustave is the uncle of Harry(my grandfather) and Theresa(Harry sister) Dumas. Theresa married a Prudhomme. I got this information from my grandfather's obituary and family members.

My grandfather surname was Donato on my mom's side. My parents came to Toronto back in 1959 from Sicily. My grandpa had 9 children and lived in Marsala Sicily and all but 2 are in Toronto.

My grandpa's parents lived and died in Sicily. That's all I know.

Christie, this is Lenora Gobert, Hilery Gobert's cousin, who originally posted the message and am now replying. Sorry it's taken SO ridiculously long to reply to you.

Therese Prudhomme is one of 17 children born to Melitia Prudhomme and Marie Josephe Simien. Info we have in our family database is that Therese was born 15 Oct 1895 in Iota, Acadia parish. Theresa's sister, Merciolamphe Prudhomme, was the 3rd born of the 17 siblings. Merciolamphe is my great grandmother.

Was Gustav Donato Theresa's husband?

According to my mother, Emelda Salazar Salvador Donato,my grandmother came from Bacolod. My grandmother's name is Francisca Salazar and his only brother is Luisito Salazar, a former Philippine Constabulary officer. My mother is 25% spanish and so my granny is 50% spanish and 50% Pinoy.

My father, Vicente Donato Jr., came from San Isidro, Nueva Ecija. We thought that it was our province but one day one of my professor in college asked me if i am related to the Donato's in Ilocos and I replied no. Then I asked my father about it and he tells us some story. He was a salesman of Serg's product when one time he was assigned in Ilocos. His fellow salesman call him to show something in the municipal building. To the surprise of my father, he saw his portrait in that building only older because he is 40 plus years old that time. I dont remember the name but the portaits name was Don (first name) Donato. Don Donato is one of the 12 pictures in that gallery. According to some person they inquired, Donato's was one of the richest and influential family in that place. When my father got home, he asked his mother regarding it and she said, her great grandfather was the youngest in 12 or 13 siblings of Donato's. When his parents died he stowed away for a reason. He never came back to Ilocos after that although his brothers and sisters look for him.
Maybe this is the reason why I was fascinated to visit Ilocos region. maybe we really hail from this palce but I dont have a lead anymore.
So guys, if you have any information regarding this story, kindly help me.

The only Scerbo I know of is my 3rd great-grandmother, Caterina Scerbo. She was married to Domenico Perri. I know that they had three children. Two died young, Carmine and Maria. They had another child, Giovanni Perri (my 2nd great-grandfather). He was born in Gagliano. I am not sure where Domenico or Caterina were born.

I came across your posting on the "Donato Family" message board. I am a great, great granddaughter of Vesta Donato, who raised my mother (in Northern California, after the family moved to the Lodi area in the 1940's?). As I am approaching my 40th birthday, I have begun to research my family heritage but it has not been easy since so many of our family members (in California) have passed. My mother, sister and I were ecstatic to read your posting on Ancestry.com (and others' postings) about the Donato family! We have all seen the large framed portrait of Donato Bello that has been passed from family member to family member out in California--however, the younger generation has not known the full story of Donato Bello until now!

I would be so grateful for any information you (or anyone) may have on Vesta - her parents, grandparents and spouse (Emile Chevis). I have downloaded through Google e-books the book you recommended: Creoles of Color in the Bayou Country, and finished the fascinating chapter on the Donato-Bello clan.

I look very forward to any information anyone may have to share about Vesta.

my grandmother's name was Joella Lyons her father was Choctaw/Cherokee she was born in Opelousas, La. in the 1890's, She married a Donato who later changed his last name to Watson (after a murder he committed)and the moved North from Louisiana,Texas,Rhode Island and finally New York. I believe her mothers name may have been Cora Lee(last name ?)her mother was black.

My paternal grandfather was a Donato who fathered 13 children from a choctaw/cherokee black woman in Louisiana after the turn of the century, sound familiar. Also his father Louis Donato, had children by two sisters, one he was married to the other he was not.

My great great grandmother was named Maria Guiseppa Trapasso (she married Giovanni Fabiano) who is supposed to have immigrated to Niagara Falls. Her daughter was my great grandmother Maria Teresa Fabiano. I am wondering if this is related to the Maria Guiseppa you mention. They were from Gimigliano, Italy

Marcel, I am also trying to make Donato connections to my Prudhomme ancestors. My ggrandmother was a Prudhomme (not Natchitoches, Opelousas)and HER grandmother was Eugenie Donato. I've tried figuring out how Eugenie fits into the Donato clan but cannot find out how. Eugenie's husband was William Prudhomme, according to Hebert's citation but also Hebert and census records indicate she was married to Leon Manso/Manse, and common law then married to Charles/Carlos Sonnier. I have information that Eugenie's father was August Donato and her mother was Sylvanie but Sylvanie doesn't show up in Creoles of Color by Brasseaux or anywhere else that I have uncovered.

My mother Doris Comeaux Donato, her father was William Comeaux (his dad Paul Comeaux)and her mother was Emily Dorritt McNicoll from Washington and Opelousas, La. Her grandfather was John McNicoll who was a blacksmith in Washington. I have hit a wall researching my ancestry on mom's side. She had a siter Josie (Josephine) Comeaux who married a Malveaux. They are my great-great-great grandparents. My dad Gustave Donato in Opelousas, La.,(dec'd 03/2003)had a picture of Martin Donato Bello hanging in his home and I'm not sure who has it now. If I find it I will have to take a picture of it because it is a very large picture. Wish me luck.

My family is from Sicily, also. I had an Uncle Bennie. His real name was Epiphanio. He as the youngest of 10 kids. The family moved to Philly in the early part of the 20th century. I know one of my grandparents was from Spadafora in Sicily. Most of that generation is gone now, but I do have to aunts that are in their late 80's, eary 90's.

My mother (Santa "Sally" Donato) had cousin John who was in the Navy, and stationed in VA for part of his service. I believe he had two sons and, perhaps one daughter (not sure). I met John , his wife and children when I was very young. As a child, I understood that John and his wife gave up their children for adoption. John was the son of my great uncle (Dominic) who lived in Cambridge, MA. My great uncle had 3 children with his first wife (Carmela, Tony, and John; Tony is deceased, but Carmela is very much alive and lives in MA - Stoneham, I THINK). My great uncle married a second time, when his first wife died, and had a daughter Joann and 5/6 sons. I can put you in touch with a family member who can provide you with more information.

Rosaria was my husbands grandmother. She was born in Terranova da Libari,Cosenza,Italy - 23 Jan. 1873. Her parents were - Salvatore Donato and Guiseppina Peraino.
She arrived in NYC on the ship - Citta di Torino, 4 June 1904.
Married Michele Oliva 14 Jan 1905 in Paterson,NJ. He was from the same town in Italy.
Does anyone know about her family in Italy ie. siblings, church attended, relatives etc. Anything you may have will be helpful.

I too am a descendant of Marie Tallifer, she is my ggggg and my gggggg- grandmother, her son Martin is my ggggg grandfather and her daughter Celeste (Martin's full sister) is my gggg grandmother (Martin's granddaughter married Celeste's, son).
My sister said Father Hebert's records have Martin Donato Bello marrying Marie Taillifer in New Orleans. Her 3 children, Martin, Celeste and Victoire are his. She did remarty after Martin remarried, but I saw no record of children from that union.

Would this mean anything? My great grandmother was born Salvatora "Donato) born in Barcelona Pozzi deGotto, Messina, Sicily in 1854.
Her (Salvatora) mother and father were Francesco and Carmela DONATO.

Salvatora "DONATO" married Salvatore (MAIO) MAGGIO from Meri, Messina Sicily, and later moved to Santa Lucia del Mela, Messina Sicily, where they used the "MAGGIO" instead of the MIAO name.

Salvatore MAGGIO, and some of his sons later came to the US in 1899, men first, wives and children later between 1900 and 1903. They settled in Ybor City, Tampa Florida, after working in Hillsborough and Polk County (Lakeland, FL)
