Descendents of John Donnelly from Westmeath, Ireland, who married Margaret Sweeney

Seeking information on the parents of John Donnelly (1844-after 1911), born in Collinstown or Castlepollard in Westmeath, Ireland. John married Margaret Sweeney in 1872 in Castlepollard and had 8 children, all born in the Castlepollard & Collinstown area: Catherine 1873-?; Mary 1874-?; John 1875-?; Margaret 1878-?; Eliza 1881-?; Ellen 1883-?; Mathew 1886-?; and James 1888-?. Some or all may have emigrated to North America or England. Any information on the Donnelly's would be much appreciated.

I recently sent for a copy of the death certificate of Frank Donnelly from the NYC Dept of Records. Unfortunately, this particular Frank Donnelly is not my ancestor. Maybe someone else out there is looking for this particular individual.

Frank Donnelly, age 47, died 24 September 1889. Born in Ireland about 1842. Father's name is Phelin, mother's name is Catherine (no maiden name given). Came to the U.S. about 1857. He was living on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Address listed is 64 Oliver Street. Occupation: laborer.

Patrick Donnelly-Margaret Coleman

I'm seeking information regarding the parents and descendants of Patrick Donnelly and Margaret Coleman (married) both from Roscommon, Ireland and born in the 1850's. They had a son, Peter J Donnelly, born in 1874 in Iowa. Peter married Bridget Mawe around 1899. Peter and Bridget had 3 children: Mary born in 1902, Marguerite (Margaret) born in 1905 and Joseph born in 1907. Peter died in Omaha, NE on March 20, 1911.

Joanna, your ggfather, patrick callaghan was brother in law to my ggfather, john donnelly, who married anne callaghan on dec 29,1863, so we are related.patricks parents died in fort edward in new york. he in1895, aged76, she in sept 5, ? at age 83. Peter.

Thanks for your message.

Yes, I know the lay of the land of Harrison/East Newark/Newark. I did not grow up there, but my father did, and I have visited.

I don't, yet, have a good date of death for William L Donnelly - it is between 1930 and 1938, and I'm hoping to narrow it a bit before I request a search of all those years. I suspect he died before July 1932, but I do not yet have absolute proof.

I have him in numerous City Directory listings, but I don't have any concrete proof of siblings. He was a butcher, and there were other Donnelly butchers in Harrison.

William L Donnelly was definitely born in Ireland; my grandfather, William Aloysius Luke Donnelly, was born in Harrison in 1893, and my father, William Aloysius Donnelly Jr, in Harrison, in 1921. I have Church baptismal and marriage records for Sr and Jr.

William L appears to have been married twice. My great-grandmother (2nd wife) was Catherine McGarrity. I have fairly good evidence that she came from Carrickmore, Omagh in County Tyrone.

my G-Grandfather was John Donnelly 1840-1902. born in Northern Ireland. Emigrated circa 1861 to Newark, NJ. His parents are James Donnelly and Mary Monahan.
He married Rose Colgan 1842-1904. Rose also came from No. Ireland.
I have never proven what county or townland they came from but I do believe they knew each other in Ireland.
I have never found any siblings of my GGrandfather.

Ann, I don't know how familiar you are with the Newark-Harrison area of NJ but there is only a river seperating them and Harrison is almost within walking distance to the part of Newark my GGrandfather lived. I only have one William Donnelly in my line and he was born in Newark circa 1870.
Have you worked the 1880-1900 census for your William D.?
If you have a good death date for him you can send to Trenton, NJ for his death record. Being his death date is past 1900 there are restrictions for security reasons but a direct relative can obtain the record. Hopefully it will give his parents names.

Looking for any info on Mary Dorothy donnelly born abt. 1785 and came to Canada with her husband William Shores- born 1777- circa 1820 and settled in Quebec.
Mary's father was a heavyweight boxing champion so it has been said and William Shores raised a raced horses in England, Ireland and France.
They were both born in Belfast but that might not be the exact place of birth.
Any info will be greatly appreciated.

My g-grandfather was William L Donnelly, who came from Ireland first to New York and then to Harrison, Hudson County, New Jersey.

I have not been able to uncover any details of siblings or parents, nor place or origin in Ireland.

William arrived between 1870-1880, b about 1860, and died in the 1930s. Does that fit your family timeline?

My ggrandfather was William L Donnelly, from Co. Tyrone, born about 1860, arrived US between 1872 and 1880. Married Catherine McGarrity (probably also from Co. Tyrone, and previously married to Thomas Nelis). My grandfather, William Aloysius Donnelly, and most of his siblings were born in Harrison NJ between 1893 and 1905. My grandfather married Margaret Frances Hughes in Harrison NJ in 1920, at Holy Cross Catholic Church (Jersey Street).

I have pretty good detail from the time they arrived in the US, but absolutely nothing in Ireland.

He is said to have had 5 brothers and 2 sisters come to the states from Ireland but I have not been able to track any down.

Brothers: John & Michael Donnelly said tohave been in New York City

Brother Thomas said to have been in Philly

And brothers Patrick (Peoria) and Frank (Chicago) said to have moved to IL with Miles

There were also said tohave been two sisters - one may have been Elizabeth but I am not sure.

Don't know if it is the same person...but what can it hurt?
I have a Thomas Donally in Pa. I know he died abt. 1802 in Pa. and his wife was Elanor and son was William Donnally, b. 1779. One of his children, John, b. 1806, started spelling it Donnelly. I sure hope this is the same family. It would break down a huge brick wall I have hit.

My grandfather was the George Donnelly you have mentioned but their deceased fathers name was Francis who was born in India. I Know George lived in Birmingham for some time but little else, I wonder if there is any connection.

Looking for any info on Michael Donley (Donnelly). Born in Ireland around 1895. Married Susan or Suzanna Maloney, settled in Pgh, PA. Had 2 sons. Susan(Suzanna) passed away in Pgh around 1943 and Michael left the children at the gravesite. His children never saw him again.

This is my family. I am Rosemarie's (Jamaes)McAnally nee McGinty's daughter. Her mother was Edna nee Donnelly. Her father was Thomas Aquinas McGinty. They also had Bernice McGinty, Isabel (Charles)Smith nee McGinty and Thomas Aquinas ( Patricia nee Mink) McGinty Jr.

Edward donnelly married Emma nee Fitzroy
William Donnelly married Anna nee Leach they had William and Joan Crocker nee Donnelly.
Raymond Donnelly never married and lived with William's wife Anna until his death.

I am trying to find a connection between a Mary Donnelly and a Michael McGarvey. Supposedly she was the mother of my great-grandfather Patrick McGarvey born 1844 in the townland of Altaglushan County Tyrone. The information my grandfather left was that Michaels wife was a Sarah Mullin, but records seem to point to Mary, at least at some point. Possible she died and my g.g.grandfather remarried. You may already have it, but you can see the full death certificate on www.familysearch.org, including full DOB and Date of death, as well as cemetery name.

Margaret/Marguerite and William Donnelly are also names from my family, but I don't know of a connection. The age is right for my William to be a brother of your Marguerite.

My William (great-grandfather) arrived in NYC about 1880, moved to NJ about 1891 and lived until 1931.

Sorry, my Donnelleys came over in the 1800's to Boston so it's hard to make a connection. Been in similar situation. I'd suggest you branch out to the siblings of your direct line ancestors to find other family members doing research. Leave messages with the list of sibling names and where they're from. Also post on locational boards in PA. Local researchers might reach out with some help. Good luck!

James Donnelly's parents were Daniel Donnelly and Lillie Ann Wark. He was born in Andover Parish, Victoria County, NB. One of his sisters, Joanna (Donnelly) Miller, is my great great grandmother. I have lots more information if you are still looking.

My g grandfather William L (possibly Luke) Donnelly was born in Ireland about 1860 and arrived in New York before 1880, then moved to Harrison, Hudson County, New Jersey between 1890 and 1893.

Name of first wife unknown. Daughter Anna born about 1885. Married 2nd wife, Catherine McGarrity, about 1889. She had a daughter, Mary Ann Nelis, father Thomas Nelis. One presumes a previous marriage for each, but no confirmation found.

Children of William Donnelly and Catherine McGarrity
Thomas (born NY and died in a skating accident in NJ in 1901)
The remaining children were all born in Harrison, Hudson, NJ
William Aloysius (my grandfather)
Catherine Margaret
Patrick James
Sarah
Margaret
Paul
Margaret

I have birth dates and confirmation records for the children born in Harrison, from researching Church microfilms.

Our family has dwindled - many members never married and many who married had no children. I am extremely interested in locating the possible lines descending from siblings of my great-grandfather, William L Donnelly.

I have Donnelley's, but no Doran's, in Mayo. You might try the Hugh Doran name in Mayo Census info. Chances are his name was passed down and it's not too common a first name. Maybe you can narrow down where you think they might be from. You might try posting on the Doran surname message board and some of the Mayo locational websites with your info.

Sorry, I just got this message as I had to re-up my membership. My GG-Grandmother , Mary E. Doran, born to Hugh Doran and ?Catherine(it's a guess) and had a brother Bernard. I think Hugh was married and widowed in Ireland and he and the kids came over to America. They settled in Andover, NY in Alleghany County. I have the death notice from the Hornell newspaper. Mary married Martin Donnelly and lived in Steuben County. Still tracing the Donnelly side but it would be nice to find MAry's roots as she is my only actual link to somewhere

My family can trace its roots to 1840;s in Humphrey County Tennessee, USA and we found a Bridgett in England around 1850 with our unique spelling but we can not find a record of our spelling in Ireland or establish the link from Ireland to England. We assume Donnely is our related clan. Found it interesting John Wesley delivered a sermon at Ballydonnelly since we are Methodist. My grandfather was a Methodist minister in Tennessee

I cannot tie my Donley/Donnelly line to any other family except I keep running into a John, and I have seen the name Peter a few times, too. I am looking for Donnelly's from Pomeroy, Tyrone. My ggrandfather, Daniel Joseph Donnelly was born there in 1857. He married Jane Quinn in Stranolar and they left via Liverpool on the S.S. Prince in 1889 and settled in Philadelphia. Daniel's parents were Patrick Donnelly and Bridget McCann. I'm hoping someone might have some info about them. Thank you!

The father of Catherine's McGarrity's oldest child was Thomas Nelis. I still do not know if Thomas and Catherine married in Ireland, before immigrating, or after arrival in the USA. In fact, I do not for sure that they married.

Mary Ann "Mamie" Nelis was born in New York (probably 1889) and married James Heathwood in Harrison, Hudson, New Jersey on 5 October 1914. Aunt Mamie died 12 June 1947, in New Jersey.
