I am researching a Myrtle E. Kendall, now deceased background. She is my blood relative. Her brother Les was my dad. Myrtle has used many names over her lifetime. She had a daughter named Arlene, I believe using the name of Donovan. Myrtle married a McGray, had a daughter,Shirley. I cannot track down anything on Arlene's parentage. My aunt married several times and possibly a few relationships outside of marriage. The time period sounds right and that is why I am writing this info to you. I hope I get good info back. GREENE is her maiden name. Thanks, Marlene Greene Roberge

I posted the above 2 years ago and thought I should add to it. There is some evidence that the father of John Frank Donovan was Gen. Thomas Donovan was originally from Kentucky and was married to Margaret Hanna, but that is very shaky. John Frank was born in Covington, KY in 1826 according to the 1880 census, and his father in KY, but that is all. Any help on Thomas would be greatly appreciated.

From the Chatsworth Plaindealer
Chatsworth,Livingston,Illinois

JOHN W. DONOVAN
APRIL 16, 1925

John W. Donovan died at his home a mile west and about 2 1/2 miles south of Chatsworth Tuesday (April 14), death being attributed to pneumonia with complications. He had been in poor health for several months but had been bedfast about ten days. Due to infected gums he had had a number of teeth extracted recently. The poison seemed to spread to his entire system and later developed into the dread disease pneumonia. His condition was not considered alarming at first but gradually grew worse until the end.
Funeral services were held this forenoon at 10 o'clock at the Catholic church and was largely attended by relatives and friends. The Knights of Columbus and Modern Woodmen lodges to which he was affiliated attended in a body and acted as an escort to and from the church. The burial was in St. Patrick's cemetery near his home.
Deceased was born in Knox county, Illinois, December 3, 1868, making him 57 years, 4 months and 19 days old. The family came to Livingston county in 1870 and settled in Charlotte township.
He was united in marriage in 1893 to Miss Anna O'Connor at LaSalle. For almost a quarter of a century they have resided on the farm where death claimed him and reared a large family and established many friendships that will endure.
The widow and the following children survive: Mrs. Elizabeth Haberkorn, Daniel, James, John, and Thomas, of this vicinity and Sister Annlee of St. Mary's, Notre Dame, Indiana.
Just a suggestion.... in 1910 My grandfather "Daniel" Donovan was listed under Daniil Donovan.... that same census list my Father "Paul" as Pavl.... looking at the records it is easyenough to see they were transposed incorrctly, as Grandfather Grandmother Aunt Uncle and Father were correct in the census.... But when I looked Up Daniel in 1910 he was not listed.... but DANIIL was!
maybe trying another spelling will help you.
Good Luck!
I am still here and my search continues. I will have to get my hands on this Rossa's book to see if my family is mentioned or not. My great grandmother Honora Twomey, whose mother was Catherine (O'Donovan) moved to Philadelphia around 1896 and lived with relatives, she was married there to my Great Grandfather Jeremiah O'Riordan. I am trying to get access to that marriage record to see if there was a listed address for Honora. Again, trying to show how my great great grandmother Catherine was related to JODR. Any help here would be grateful of course. Happy searching

Have a great day!

Dan O'Riordan

Goodness, after 6 years I hope you're still checking in here! In "Rossa's Recollections" he states that one his mother's sisters was Mrs. Bridget Murray of No. 11 Callowhill St. in Philadelphia. She gave him a list of his maternal side: the mother of his grandfather (Conn O'Driscoll) was Ellen White; the mother of his grandmother (Annie O'Leary) was Ellen MacKennedy. Conn's brother, Denis, married Mary O'Donovan-Dheeil.

He also says that the mother of the wife of Henry Hughes (an Alderman of New York) was an O'Donovan Rossa, and a cousin of his.His cousins ranged across the country, according to him. The chapter on genealogy is mind-boggling.

Thanks for your reply. The name Timothy does run in my Donovan line. I had originally thought that Daniel's fathers' name was Timothy. Daniel and Catherine had a son Timothy and my great grandmother (Mary Donovan) named a son Timothy. We don't know where the name Timothy comes from. Catherine's father was named Patrick. There could be a connection since I don't know why Daniel moved to Glamorgan. But it sounds more like cousins than a direct line. I will check out Bantry since I also don't know where in Cork that Daniel was born. Thanks for the information.

This is probably not a match because dates would make it difficult, but my g-grandfather Timothy Donovan was born in Bantry, Cork, Ireland, in about 1827. According to my late father who learnt it from his father, Timothy and his father Daniel moved from Cork to England in about 1851 to see the Great Exhibition. Timothy eventually settled in Devon and Cornwall, marrying near Plymouth.
He lived in Cardiff for a while after retiring then moved to Prtsmouth where he died in 1901.
I have never found anything more about Daniel.

John Donovan

I can find only one record for a Daniel Donovan born in 1880 in Kinsale.

Daniel Donovan Bap. 2 Jan 1880. Father John Donovan. Mother Margaret Mahoney. Any use? This is the Baptismal Record for the church in Kinsale.

I may also have found a record of his birth with the place listed as Farrangalway, Co. Cork. Farrangalway is a townland near Kinsale, actually very close to where my own William lived.
Hello, I am trying to find relations of William Donovan born to Hugh Donovan and Catherine Crowley in Kinsale Co. Cork, Ireland in 1841. He had at least one brother (Hugh) and one sister (Sarah).

Hugh (William's father)Married Catherine Crowley in Kinsale, Co. Cork, Ireland on the 31 January 1836. Hugh and Catherine had 7 children. Jeremiah, John, Hester, Hugh, William, Hugh(2) and Sarah.

I am also interested in the fate of William's son (Alfred Charles Donovan) born in 1880 in Galway, Ireland (mother was Bridget Hurley of Skibereen, Co. Cork). Alfred appears in the 1901 census described as a post office clerk but had disappeared, possibly to Pittsburgh, by 1911. He was never heard of again. Though his name was Alfred Charles, he appears as 'Aly' in the 1901 census and seems to have been known as 'Charles' in the family.

My grandmother was Ellen O'Hea, her mother was an O'Driscol. As children we were told we were related to O'Donovan Rossa and in 1832 I have Jerimia's brother Denis marrying Nellie O'Driscoll. I am loocing for the connection between Denis and my grandmother Anne O'Driscoll who married Michael O"Hea. I do know that in 1928 my grandmother Ellen O"Hea Jenkins took in Dennis and Corneilus O'Driscol and Jerimia and Daniel Crowly as they got off the boat. I understood that all four were getting away from the English...not unlike O'Donovan Rossa.

There are too many Mary Donovans that were born in NJ about this time and I don't have enough info to figure out which one is her. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Chris Mulligan

Searching for Edward Donovan

Edward Donovan/O'Donovan was born in ireland (year unknown), moved to wales and fathered William Edward Donovan in 1864. William immigrated to Iowa,USA, and married Nora Whipple, creating many family lines throughout Canada and the USA. My search is for Edward, his parents and siblings if any. Our family story goes that while William came to North America, the rest of his family went to South Africa. Any ideas would be welcome :)
