My G Grandfather was James Doon, from Co Armough, Ireland, b
7-1837. I believe that they lived in Northern Armough, probably around Lurgan. His Mother and Father were killed by the Orange Men in 1841, he and his Grand Father were the only ones in the home not killed. ( I believe his the Grandfathers name was James) They then lived with an Aunt Catherine Doon (last name Ravey. They were weavers, and emigrated to US about 1851 to Underhill VT. James married Ellen Fay and had 6 children. They moved to Nebraska in 1880.I have 2 great pictures and some wonderful
Irish fairy tales told by him. If you have any info on the the family town of origin, I would be very interested as we are traveling to N Ireland soon.Do you think that this is a relative? I would be interested in a family reunion if so. Shirley Chavanu chavanusa@aol.com

Annie Cecilia Doon (1876-96)

Hello Doons,
I scanned my grandmother’s large photo album of unmarked photos and found a burial memorial card for Annie Cecilia Doon,
daughter of John and Mary Doon.
born: 1 May 1876 / died: May 6, 1896

Annie must have been a acquaintance or relative of my grandmother’s parents or grandparents as my grandmother was not born until 1896 in New Brunswick. Their last names were: McShane & Hinchy –Irish, Canadian and Costello & O’Brion -Irish, American (Maine).

I’ll attach the scan to this message in case anyone is interested. I no longer have access to the album. It’s a shame the photos were unmarked as they are in excellent condition.
Best Regards,
Daniel
Isabella Doon

I am looking for any info or connection to my gt gt gt gm Isabella Doon. I know absolutely nothing about her apart from she was married to a miner called John Dixon and had a son called William b. abt 1845 somewhere in England. William's parents are recorded on both his marriage and death certificates (scotland). William married a Mary Ann McCawley in 1881 in Larkhall Evangelist Church. He was 36 at this time and is shown just before this in the 1881 census as a lodger of a Tom Duff in Ferniegair, Lanark. I can find nothing earlier for William. There is no record of a marriage for a John Dixon and an Isabella Doon, and too many Williams to make a decent search elsewhere for a birth certificate. There is no record of a death for an Isabella Doon in Scotland or England, nor Ireland! Family myth stated that William was American/Canadian. Although he stated he was born in England not everyone told the truth (particularly if they thought they might get deported!). It is possible that he had at least spent some time in (probably) Canada or US. Any info on Isabella or any pointers would be welcome.

There has been speculation that the Doone family about whom Blackmore wrote in his novel Lorna Doone was based on a real family.
I notice one of the replies to your Message mentions someone who uses the spelling with the 'e' at the end. To identify a tie up you would need to go back to 17th century Somerset England. Intriguing though!
DNJ

Hi, looking for information on my namesake relative, Naylor Family. Have info that Charles M. Naylor, born in 1858, married a Margaret Doon. They lived in Ct. and had at least one child, Charles Jr., who in turn had one daughter, Evelyn, who married a Dan Ryan, who went on to become a champion skater but died tragically in a plane crash on the way to Olympics or Olympic trials in Belgium. The whole team was killed.

My grandmother was Aileen Doon, her father
was Henry George Doon, her mother was Elsie May Lamb. They lived in Utah. Henry was born 4/19/1853 in probably Vermont or Mass. He died 12/9/1881 in Ogden, Utah. He and Elsie had 6 children. Claude James, Rita, Coe, Lester, Chester, and Agnes Aileen, my grandmother. Henry's father was John Doon and his mother was Catherine (Barrett?). Elsie's mother was Mary Gifford and her father was James Lamb. Elsie was born in Lafyette, Indiana on 8/21/1859.
I would dearly like to know more info
about the Doon's. Rita had a daughter Vivian
that I have no idea where her where-abouts are. Jim had only one son who died as a child, Coe had 2 sons, Jim and Jack. This family I have knowledge of. Chester had 2
daughters, Aileen and Lorna, but I have no
info on them. Coe, Lester and Henry all died
in 1918, within 3 months of each other. My
grandmother did not keep in touch with any
of the family except for Coe's sons.
If anyone can help me with this, I would
really appreciate it. Thanks!

John, Thank you for your reply! I would
love to call you. I am in Oregon, so we
have a 3 hour time difference. How late
can I call? My email is karenlee@hoodriver.
net. I had thought Henry Doon had been born
in Underhill, Vermont, but when I wrote them
for a record of his birth, all I got was the
record of the death of his brother, who was
named Henry also, as the first Henry died at
age 13, 3 days before Henry George was born.
They had no record of the birth of Henry George. I have a copy of John Doon's family,
who was the father of Henry G. Doon. It was
hand written by Emma L Doone in 1962. I have
no idea who Emma Doone is or was. You might
find it interesting, if you don't already have this info. Thanks!
