Seeking inf on Lewis Benjamin Dorcas b 1867 NY res WV

Very interested in family stories on this interesting man named Lewis Benjamin DORCAS. He was born in 1867 in New York, of African descent, in 1891 he marrried Mary E. HEDRICK at Harman, early I think in this area for an inter racial marriage. Probably because he was one of the smartest men around! They had the following children: Frederick D., Hubert & Hubbert, Lewis B., by 1886 Lewis was a Roalsburg WV barber, in 1887 he was the first colored juror to serve in Tucker County, highly educated, one of finest pen men in the state, first barber on Dry Fork at Horton, resided St. George, Tucker County. The source is http://pioneerindex.com/query110307.html for specifics on the references. Would like to delve into his story more, assistance requested. Thankyou.

Re: Simon Dorcas of Pennsylvania mid-1800's Update

Simon Dorcas did not come from PA. He was born in Georgia before the Civil War. His mother's family owned a plantation with slaves. His mother made him work alongside the slaves and he objected and ran away when he was 10 or 11. Census records show his birth year between 1847-1850, so he may have run away to join the army...don't know which side! Plantation was rumored to have been in DeKalb County GA...still researching that area. Census also states Simon's father born in Wales and mother born in Georgia. No clue as to mother's maiden name. His wife Laura Wanamaker was born in PA, they were divorced as some point after Charles Edgar Dorcas was born, and she remarried a Magee. .
