Zaccheus Dorton b circa 1813 in NJ

I am working on my best friend's family tree for her and have hit a road block with her ancestor Zaccheus Dorton. I know he married a woman named Elizabeth and they had two maybe three children: William b circa 1847 in Hamilton Twp, Atlantic Co, NJ; Phebe b. May 1850 in Hamilton Twp married Charles R Coulter; possibly another son born 19 Feb 1855 in Mays Landing, Atlantic Co, NJ. Can anyone help me out?

Thanks
Robb

I'm not sure if it's the same one, but it's all mapped out here.

http://www.familyorigins.com/users/b/a/r/Glenn-W-Barnett/FAM...

Hi, I have been reading the dorton posts because I have been trying to find any info on the Indian line..my husband's mother is a Dorton..I did find that the Dorton surname is common among the Melungeon tribe. My husband's cousin's, also a Dorton, wife has researched back 5 generations which the 4 & 5 were William Dorton, Sr & Jr. The one married to an Elizabeth from what she understands, was the daughter of a half-blood cherokee named Benge. Do you know anything on that? If you have not read anything about the Melungeons might I suggest that you do. It is quite interesting and they are from the area from which the Dorton's came from and I have seen many of the Dorton names on the lineage

Hi, I am descended from Joseph H Dorton and his first wife, who died shortly after giving birth to my G Grandmother, Mary L Dorton. His first wife's name was Mary Letitia Miller. Joseph was born in VA around 1846. After Mary L Miller died, he remarried Emily C. 13 yrs younger than he. My great-grandmother was born in TN around 1876; she had in the 1880 census, sisters: Martha A, 8 yrs, Lillie J E, 6 yrs of age. this census was taken in Powell Dist, Scott Co, VA. My grandmother (Bess Jane Kidd) said Joseph Dorton, her grandfather, was buried in either Pridemore or Gobble Cemtery, near Clinchport VA. do you have any information on this family.

Hi

My family is from Nova Scotia and I believe we are the only Dorton's in this area. My father was Ernest Edward Leo Dorton of Port Hawksbury. His father was Edward Dorton and his mother was Christine (Cummings) Dorton. We are the only family of Dorton's in Nova Scotia. I have searched the internet and there seems to be a lot in the U.S. I was told by a relative that the origin was "Dalton" and was changed through the years.

I would like to know if anyone has more info as to where or how we came to be

Hi Robert,

I must have overooked it before but I notice that you have Nancy as the name of Charley Newman's mother. Everything that I find indicates her name was Lucy. Do you know if this is a middle name that she went by? In the North Carolina Birth Records it shows that James Newman and Lucy Shell are the parents of Charles Newman b. 1887. Let me know your thoughts.

Thank you,
Debbie

Tiffany, I believe there must be two Joel Dortons. The Joel listed here doesn't fit with the information I have for Sarah's father. However I have also found her in the marriage register with her last name is spelled Deston. She is listed in the annotated census as being Sarah Dorton. If you look back at some of the earlier posting you'll see the Wiley connection. I'm related to Jenny Sellards Wiley about three different ways. Bubby Rowe

Iris, thank you. I wonder if Martha is Sarah's mother and not Haley. All I have to go on is the annotated census for Wayne co. WV. I'm not sure right now if it was the 1860 or 1880 census. My mind is so mixed up here lately. But whichever one it was they have Sarah's parents listed as Joel and Haley Dorton. And if memory serves me there's another place se is listed a Deston. It is amazing how things get so mixed up. You are probably correct in what you found, and I thank you for your help.

In all of your Dorton information do you have listed a Lewis Dorton? He is in the 1800, 1810 and 1820 Census for Shelby County, Kentucky. I believe he is the father of my George Dorton who moved to Callaway County, MO abt. 1827-1830. Any information or leads would be appreciated. I have posted on this board in the past regarding Lewis but have received no information as yet about him. Thanks in advance for your answer.

There are two sources that you might want to try (if you haven't already - due to the time lag):
1. Cumberland County's First Hunders Years by
Helen Bullard and Joseph marshall Krechniak.
2. Tales of the Civil War Era by
Mrs. Stella Mowbray Harvey.

The latter is a compilation published by the Chronical publishing of Crossville Inc. in 1963.

Both sources mention the murder of Moses during the civil war.

Lewis Dorton, Shelby County KY, circa 1800

Hello Dorton relatives!

I am still searching for information on Lewis Dorton who lived in Shelby County in the early 1800's. I periodically re-post in order to try and catch anyone who has joined recently. I am really stuck here so any help would be appreciated!!

This branch of the Dorton family is my brick wall. I am still trying to locate my grandmother's family. She was a Dorton from a family that came from Virginia to Shelby County , Kentucky around 1800. I am still trying to find information on the family before 1800. Here is a brief overview. Any help would be appreciated, especially if you have seen a Lewis Dorton listed in any of your research.

I am looking for information on Lewis Dorton who lived in Shelby County Kentucky from circa 1800-1830. He had a son George and a daughter Elizabeth and possibly other children unknown to me. Elizabeth married Hiram Shakelford Dec 15, 1817. George married Nancy Clatterbuck Aug 14, 1816 in Shelby County, KY. Lewis is listed as paying the bond for a number of marriages including Ducker, Vories, Garrett, Moses, Adams, Williams, Wells, Riddle, Dearinger, and is listed as the cousin of Elizabeth Feuell at her marriage to William Hunley April 20, 1813 and paid the bond. He also is noted as putting up the bond for the founding of the town of Graefenburg, Shelby County, Kentucky. I am interested in where he came from, his wife's name and any other children he may have had. I would also like to know if he died in Kentucky or if he came to Callaway County Missouri with his son George Dorton when he moved in 1830. Any help would be appreciated.
Later generations of the Dorton family in Missouri carry the names of William, Reuben, Oliver, Benjamin, Beauregard, Bertha, and Matilda among others.

Thanks again for any help you can give!

Cindy Blankenship
Dorton family from Virginia to Shelby County KY to Callaway County MO

This branch of the Dorton family is my brick wall. I am still trying to locate my grandmother's family. She was a Dorton from a family that came from Virginia to Shelby County , Kentucky around 1800. I am still trying to find information on the family before 1800. Here is a brief overview. Any help would be appreciated, especially if you have seen a Lewis Dorton listed in any of your research.

I am looking for information on Lewis Dorton who lived in Shelby County Kentucky from circa 1800-1830. He had a son George and a daughter Elizabeth.

I have been researching this DORTON line for a while and I have never seen William DORTON, Sr., referred to as "William F.".

Could anyone tell me what the documented reference is for both his middle initial and his wife's name, Elizabeth WATTS?

I have seen other Internet references to the couple, but the "source" of the information is always given as an individual, rather than a public document, i.e., a pension, a will, or a land record.

I would like to add this information to my work, but I am wary since the source has not been documented.

Any reference is appreciated.

I'm looking for information on my family member, ELIZABETH WATTS BENGE, who married WILLIAM F. DORTON, SR. An approximate date range for her is 1734 to 1790. I am told she was from North Carolina and lived in Virginia after marrying William. Our family oral history indicates that she was either full or part Cherokee Indian. Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!

DORTON family members

Hello Dorton family members. I have been watching your correspondence about the Dorton family and would like to ask a favor. My ggggGrandmother was Sarah Dorton, b. 1780/90 in Russell Co., Va., daughter of William Dorton Jr.. She marrlied JOHN RAMSEY in Russell sometime during the year 1803. My John Ramsey does not appear in any records in Russell Co. until the 1802 Property Tax List. He also appears on the 1803 Tax List. He and Sarah leave Russell Co. sometime during the year 1803 and have their first born child, a son, William Ramsey, b. 1804 Ga. This couple is in GA. and SC. for a period of three years. They then return to Russell Co., Va. where they live from 1807 through 1818. During the year 1819 the family moves to Wayne Co., Ky. Evidently this move was made with one of Sarah Dorton's sisters, Priscilla Dorton Brown. Priscilla Dorton married Thomas Brown in Russell. What I have been trying to find for more than ten years now is the parents of JOHN RAMSEY. John Ramsey was born in VA.during the year 1777. His father will probably be a William, and his mother probably an Elizabeth. All my years of research have led me to the idea that the early DORTON family and RAMSEY family new each other. Do any of you have any Ramsey and Dorton marriages other than the ones I have mentioned ?, or can any of you shed any light on the early Dorton Ramsey relationship ? A sincere thank you is extended.

Bill Ramsey sbramz@centurytel.net
