I would be very interested to find out as well. My last name is Dossett and I know my family has a lot of roots in Dale County. I believe I remember hearing the name Hiram a long time ago when i was a kid. My father, William Micheal Dossett, son of John William Dossett (married to Retha Hutto). I know the 'William' part has been handed down for at least 9 generations before me to the first born son as well. I don't know if this helps. Let me know what you find out.

Shawn William Dossett
Poetrykrowe@hotmail.com

Dossett family of Dale County, Alabama

I am researching the Dossett family of Echo, Alabama in Dale County. William James Dossett was a civil war veteran who and he had a brother named Hiram Elbert Dossett. I am trying to find out the name of their father. Their father may have moved over to Henry County, Alabama (now Dale County)from Stewart, Georgia. Their name may have been spelled Dossette when they lived in Georgia. I would like to see if these Dossett's are related to the families in Orange, North Carolina. ceciliaharlan@yahoo.com

Sources linking Francis Dossett of PG Co. MD to Orange Co. NC - Maybe

I am posting here a number of records which I have found in Prince George Co. MD, which I believe point to our Francis Dossett of Orange co. NC as having migrated from Maryland to NC no later than 1762, when the land grant from Lord Granville was finalized. I would love to know what Orange Co. NC Dossett researchers think of this data!

From: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~chafinmars...
Thomas Andrew(5) Swearingen III, born 08 Apr 1708 in Queen Anne Parish, St. Barnabas Church, Prince
Georges, MD; died 1760 in Sheperdstown, VA. He married Sarah Dorsett; born 1722 in Harper's Ferry,
WVA; died 1799 in Sheperdstown, VA. She was probably born in Prince George Co. MD, not Harper’s Ferry!
Notes for Thomas Andrew Swearingen III:
Licensed to operate Ferry, 1755
May, 1755, 28th George II, Chap 12, An act for appointing several new Ferries.
Sect. 2, paragraph 2: "from the land of Thomas Swearingen, in the county of Frederick, over the Patomack river, to the land opposite thereto in the province of Maryland, the price for a man, three pence three farthings, and for an horse the same." and..
"And for the transportation of wheel carriages, tobacco, cattle, and other beasts, at any of the places aforesaid, the ferry keepers may demand and take the following rates, to wit, For every coach, chariot or waggon, and the driver thereof, the same as for six horses: For every cart, or four wheel chaise, and the driver thereof, as for four horses: For every two wheeled chaise or chair, as for two horses: For every hogshead of tobacco, as for one horse: For every head of nett cattle, as for one horse: For every sheep,
goat, or lamb, one fifth part of the ferriage of one horse: And for every hog, one fourth part of the ferriage of one horse; according to the prices herein before settled at such ferries, respectively, and no more.

Notes for Sarah Dosett Swearingen:
Will abst. (book 3, p7) 1799, Sheperdstown, VA
Sarah Swearengen, dated June 7, 1783; prob. date @1799:
Names daus. Drucilla Morgan and Eleanor Israel. Execs. Joseph and Benjamin Swearingen. Wits: Abel
Morgan, Abraham Morgan, George Morgan and Henry Noll

LDS: Sarah Dorsett, christened 3 Apr. 1718, West Wycombe, Buckingham, Eng. Father, Edward Dorsett, mother Joan
(Patricia's note: This can’t be the Sarah, sister to Francis Dossett, as she was bearing children in Maryland as early as 1710)

Frederick Co., Virginia Wills, Inv./Adm. by King:
Dossett, Henry Will 20 May 1750. 7 August, 1759:
Legatees: Brother Francis Dossett; Aunt Sarah Swearingen, wife of Capt Thomas, etc.
(Patricia's note: the fact that Henry willed his property to a brother and Aunt instead of children, indicate that he had no children. If this is the Henry of PG Co. MD, then he was born in 1728 and only 31 years old when he died. This will definitely links Henry Dossett of Frederick Co. VA with a brother Francis, and Sarah Swearingen's presence in the will ties both of them to Prince George Co. MD.)
--------------------------------
From: http://files.usgwarchives.net/md/princegeorge/vitals/marriag...
US Genweb Marriages and Births, Queen Anne’s Parish, Prince George Co. MD at the same time as Francis Dossett. Could this be a possible indication of where James Forrest, original immigrant to Orange Co.
Hello, Helen,
Thank you for your informative post. I am particularly interested to know how you came up with the list of children for your 1st generation Francis Dossett. Can you identify the source of that info, and give us some background about exactly what is contained in that source?

I am posting today on this family board additional information on the Francis Dossetts in Prince George Co. MD, whom I believe are highly likely the same family who immigrated to Orange Co.NC prior to 1762 when their land deed was finalized by Lord Granville.

Please see this posting and please let us know what you think of all this.

Re: Chesley Dossett: Orange Co. NC

I am also looking for Robert Chesely Dossett. I have come across the Philip Dossett line and found some pictures of Dossetts from Late 1800s. This line of Dossetts carries the same family resemblace as mine. The shape of the face the forhead and long face. The ears that stick out on the sides. I am wondering if anyone has been able to locate the parents of Robert Chesley? Or suspect he may come from this line. Thanks Anna

Appears in "The Wapanucka Press" 10 September 1903, Wapanucak, Johnston County, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma

WANTED IN TENNESSEE

A Man Who Murdered His Brother-in-law Found at Jones City

Oklahoma City: Sheriff Mike O'Brien received a telegram from the Tennessee authorities stating that a sheriff would reach Oklahoma City shortly to secure Thomas Dossett, now in jail here, awaiting removal to Tennessee, for trial on the charge of murdering his brother-in-law at LaFollette, Tennessee, several years ago.

Dossett, who has been living in Oklahoma for some time under the assumed name of Clark, was arrested by Deputy Sheriff Cokel at Jones City where he was employed in a distillery.

Dossett admitted the killing to the officers, but protests it was done in self-defense.

A man from the same neighborhood in Tennessee, where Dossett lived recently came here and recognized him. Returning to Tennessee he told the authorities where they could find Dossett and his arrest is the consequence.

not related - for your info only

Dossett, Cecil W.

CECIL W. DOSSETT "Cec" as he was fondly called by his friends, a long time Highland resident, passed away on June 1, 2007, at age 91, at the Veterans' Hospital in Loma Linda. He was born in Twin Falls, Idaho, an only child, but spent his early years helping on his parent's farm, and enjoying fun times with his four beloved cousins, who lived nearby. His college years were spent in Caldwell, Idaho, and he subsequently moved to Seattle, W ashington, and obtained his Master's Degree in Social Services from Washington State University. "Cec" loved people, had great respect for his friends, was always available if help was needed and was an animal lover. Back in Idaho he held positions in his field of social work, one with a blind institution and as County Supervision for the State of Idaho, Dept. of Public Assistance. He loved the sea and sailing, moved to Seattle again from where he volunteered with the U.S. Coastguard, served in the Pacifi c Islands during WWII, and retired with the rank of CDR. He met & married Joan McEwan in 1956, and they spent many happy times sailing, dancing, camping, trips to Europe and subsequently moved to San Bernardino where he took the position of Director of Social Services at the "old" S.B. County Hospital, retiring in Sept. 1977. He was preceded in death by his parents, two of his cousins and their wives. Survived by his loving wife, Joan; nieces, nephews, and many close family members in the U.K. Interment will be private.
Published in the San Bernardino Sun on 6/12/2007.
Madelen,
The George Dossett that I have has Christian County, KY listed as his birth place on his death certificate, but his father is shown as having been born in TN. There could be a connection here. I only know of one child that George had named Charles, but I am sure there were others. Documentation is hard to find on the Dossett clan. Do you know what your great-grandmother's name was, as that would determine even better if we have a connection here. I have access to 2 websites that show the Dossett lineage & will give you access to both is we find a connection here.

Doshua Dossett / Levy Noblet

I'm beginning to assist my mil in her family research. Her name is Imogene, her mother was Doshua Fae Dossett bd. 17 Sep 1898, Kay Co. OK, and her grand mother was Dochia Dossett bd. 18 Oct 1877. Doshua Fae married Levy Allen Noblet bd. 30 Sep 1892, (?) Heartford, Ark (?). Beyond that I haven't much info except the elder Dochia was born while in route from Iowa to Kansas, possibly in Nebraska.

I look forward to any help you may be able to offer.
BJ Leavitt
