Wrong information posted

I see that in the FAmily Trees that terrible wrong information has been posted by ONE person and many have picked it up as being correct. James Dougherty that died in 1819 NEVER had a daughter Eliza.
You are confusing 2 James Dougherty's. Here is the proof:
PORTRAIT AND BIOGRAPHICAL ALBUM pg 748, 751 MRS. ELIZA MACCRACKEN. Students of philosophy tell us that “rays of light are colorless when unbroken,” and students of human nature learn that the deepest characters, the strongest minds, are formed not by unbroken happiness, but by the varied senses of grief and joy, trials and disappointments. To only few is it allotted to attain to the great age of fourscore years, and among the list of octogenarians of Greene County, very considerable mention belongs to Mrs. MACCRACKEN, who is a most intelligent, and in many respects remarkable character, and who entered upon her eightieth year November 22, 1889. She possesses an excellent memory, and is justly proud of her children, who occupy prominent positions in life. Many years ago she was a teacher, and numbers among her former pupils some who are now filling eminent stations in life. As a friend and neighbor she is helpful and kind. As a Christian she is faithful and devoted. Jefferson County, Ohio, was the birthplace of Mrs. MCCRACKEN, and the date of her birth November 22, 1810. Her parents, James and Mary (HAWKINS) DOUGHERTY, were natives respectively of Maryland and Pennsylvania, and were both of Scotch-Irish extraction. They gave their daughter what was in those days a very fine education, and which she afterward supplemented by a thorough course of reading. She attended the Steubenville Female Seminary, of which Dr. BEATTY was President. That institution is the alma mater of hundreds of women who have blessed and elevated society with their presence. Early in life she commenced the vocation of teaching, and the results of her faithful work are apparent even now. The first marriage of our subject occurred September 16, 1833, when she became the wife of the Rev. Johnson WELCH, who was a recognized power in the pulpit, and in many respects a remarkable man. He was a graduate of the Allegheny Seminary, a theological institution of high order among the United Presbyterians. Mr. and Mrs. WELCH became the parents of two children—James and Eliza. James followed in his father’s footsteps, and is now preaching in Troy, Davis County, Iowa. Eliza is the wife of Andrew M. BROOKS, and is now Principal of the Bettie STUART Institute, of Springfield, Ill. While yet in the prime of life, and after only four years of married life, the Rev. Johnson WELCH passed away, April 17, 1837. A few years after the death of her husband MRS. WELCH was again married, the Rev. J. S. MACCRACKEN becoming her husband, and the ceremony which united them being performed November 11, 1839. MR. MACCRACKEN was the son of John and Martha (WILSON) MACCRACKEN, natives of Pennsylvania, and early settlers of Brown County, Ohio. Their son, John S., was born in Butler County, Ohio, April 6, 1804, and died April 1, 1863. He and his wife had a family of five children, the record of whom is as follows: Henry is now Principal of New York City University; John Joseph died in infancy; George is an attorney-at-law in Urbana, this State; Anna M. is at home, and is a teacher in a classical school in the old Xenia College Building; another child

READ CAREFULLY!!!!!!!!

Hiram Daugherty/Dougherty of Wythe County, Virginia 1804

I am searching for a link from Hiram Daugherty, born 1804 in Wythe County, Va and died aft 1860 in Pike County, KY) to a Daugherty/Dougherty family in Wythe County, Virginia. I can place Hiram with a fair degree of certainty in Wythe County in th 1830 Census living near a James Daugherty and a Scarlett Daugherty(male). All three were about 25 to 30 years of age. Hiram then moves to Smyth County in the 1840 Census near his wife Kezziah Whitehead's family (DeBords and Whiteheads/Whiteds). He moved to Pike County Kentucky after the death of his wife's family and got a land grant where he lived until he died between 1860 and 1878 when his wife Kizziah died. Can anyone help with who Hiram's parents were?

My Great Aunt Mary Dougherty(nee McNellis or McNelis)emigrated to Chicago from Doonalt, Glencolmkille, Ireland. She was born about 1884 and had a sister Anne who married Patrick Bateson and they had a daughter, Patricia who married John Zielinski and had 3 children. I don't know if Mary had any children. Mary had a bother, Con, my Grandfather who emigrated to Scotland and a further brother and sister who remained in Ireland and who didn't marry. I would be grateful for any information about the family and would like to contact deccendants of Mary and Anne.

Brian Reilly

My dad was born James P. Viola in Jan 5 1910. His father was John Viola, I have no information on his mother. By 1920 he was James P. Dougherty and lived with Dover and Anna Bailey at 391 Gladstone Street. Through tidbits I know he was adopted possibly by an uncle. Next door to this address (390 Gladstone) was a Daniel and Rose Dougherty.
If this rings any bells with anyone please contact me.

(I was born late in my dad's life so family history wasn't a big priority when I was young.)

i am looking for information on a Dougherty family that I found in the 1860 census-Corneluis and Rebecca Dougherty were the parents-born in Ireland around 1810 or 1811 --they have 8 children living with them in 1860--one daughter that I am sure of was married by 1860 -that would be Margaret who married a Robert McCullen--trying to find any connection out there with this family and other brothers and sisters-they were Matilda, William, Frances, Cornelius, John and Rebecca-looks like all the children were born in phila- between 1835 and 1862--any further info would be appreciated-thanks Ann
I am tracing my grandmother's family --her maiden name was Katharine Theresa Dougherty, born 1880 in Ireland to John (or Charles) Dougherty and Mary Burns/Byrne. I would love to connect with anyone else researching these families. I am especially interested in verifying my grandmother's parents. These tidbits were handed down from elderly relatives who are no longer here to question.

Her father died in the UK about 1883 and the mother and Katharine came to the U.S. to meet up with Katharine's older siblings who were working in Philadelphia:
1. Bridget, b. 1864, d. 1917, married to John O'Hara, who worked as a stevedore and was killed when he fell into the hold of a ship. They had 6 children: John, Charles, James, Mary, Annie and Billy (who died in 1980, one daughter). Bridget bought a home on Mifflin Street near 15th Street in South Philadelphia. Bridget was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Phila.

2. Maria, born 1866 married Charles Rudolph, a German immigrant and baker, had 5 children: Charles, John, Mary, Annie, Henrietta. May have lived in Wilmington. Maria died in childbirth about 1910.

3. Julia, b. 1865, unmarried seamstress. Family matriarch and decisionmaker.

4. Ellen, b. bef. 1875. died at age 22 of pneumonia.

5. Patrick, b. 1875, d. 1965, plumber, married Rose, had 4 children: John, Julia, Charles and Mary. Julia had Down syndrome. Daughter Mary married Edward Millison.

6. Katharine, b. 1880, mar. 1st ? Graham, a printer/calligrapher who died by 1907, mar. 2nd Edgar Carey about 1907(lived with aunt Mary Rehr in Philly, she also ran rooming house in Atlantic City.) They had 4 children: Edward, Helen, Anna, Florence.

PLEASE NOTE, THIS WAS POSTED FOR REFERENCE ONLY. I AM NOT RELATED TO, NOR AM I RESEARCHING THIS FAMILY, I’VE ONLY DONE A COPY AND PASTE FROM OUR LOCAL NEWSPAPER FYI.

THIS INFO HAS BEEN POSTED WITH THE PERMISSION OF THE EDITOR OF THE COLUMBIA BASIN HERALD.
May Ethel Dougherty
Posted: Wednesday, May 14, 2008 - 04:39:08 pm PDT
COLUMBIA BASIN HERALD, MOSES LAKE, WASHINGTON STATE

May Ethel Dougherty, 90, longtime Moses Lake resident, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family on May 9, 2008.

May, better known to her family and friends as Grandma May, was bom on March 26, 1918, in Seattle, to Olav Torseth and Gurid (Einarsen) Torseth. May was the oldest of four daughters born to the couple. She graduated from Monroe High School after returning from Norway in 1936, where her family spent two years following her father's death. The family moved back to Washington state to their farm between Snohomish and Monroe. She married the love of her life, George Elmer Dougherty on Oct. 25, 1941, at their home in Snohomish, Wash.

May and her husband moved to Moses Lake in 1946 after the birth of their first daughter, Cheryl. May worked as a secretary for her husband while he worked for the Grant County Department of Emergency Services. Then in 1948 they had their second daughter, Patricia. May continued to work by her husband's side until his death in 1976. May loved to hunt and fish and go camping with her husband and after his death, she continued to be very involved with her children and their activities. May was a 4-H leader and she was a volunteer firewoman for Grant County 5 in her younger years. May continued to live in Moses Lake to be near her daughters and their families. She lived next door to her youngest daughter Patricia and later in life moved in and stayed with Patricia and her husband until her passing.

May loved to volunteer for her community. She was an active member of the Columbia Basin Sons of Norway since 1978, an active member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary 209 for 60 years, an active member of the Moses Lake Grange until it dissolved in 2001, a member of the Grant County Historical Society, and a lifelong member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Moses Lake. Among things May loved to do, she especially loved to drive the pony cart around the block and take her grandchildren for rides. She also took the pony cart to Longview Elementary and gave rides to her grandchildren's classmates every year she had a grandchild at Longview. May had a passion for playing the piano, violin, accordion and especially the guitar. She attended church every Sunday to play the guitar with her daughter Patricia and together they led the Opening for the Sunday school classes. Another passion of May's was knitting. She could always be found with a knitting bag and some ongoing project, whether it be mending clothing or using plastic garbage sacks to create coasters.

May is survived by her daughters Cheryl Walker and her husband Dale; and Patricia Carpenter and her husband Richard; her sisters, Louise Torseth; Orva Anderson; Eloise Pilichowski and her husband, Art; her eight grandchildren, Phillip Walker and his wife, Katie; Rod Walker and his wife, Nicky; Ron Walker; Emily Burke and her husband, Todd; Jamie Carpenter and her fianc/ Samuel Casteel; Laura Carpenter (and Jesse Laramore); Thomas Carpenter; and Stephanie Johnson; and 18 and a half great-grandchildren; and family friends Phyllis LaMear and Evelyn Erichsen. May was preceded in death by her husband George and her parents.

There will be no service at May's request.

We will always love you, Grandma May, and forever keep you in our hearts.
Gov. Haskell refused a pardon for Roy Dougherty a member of the Dalton Gang

Appears in "The Ravia Herald" 25 April 1908, Ravia, Johnston County, Oklahoma

Gov. Haskell has refused a pardon to Roy Dougherty, now serving a fifty year sentence for murder connected with the bank robbery at Ingalls fifteen years ago. Dougherty was a member of the famous Dalton gang who gave battle to a posse of deputy marshals. The recommendation upon which the application was based was the good prison record of Dougherty. Governor Haskell in refusing the pardon said: "I am trying to catch bank robbers and not turn them loose."

I am looking for descendents of James Calvin Dougherty (07/25/1904MT - 11/20/1980 San Fran) and Thelma Daphne Kenney (12/18/1905WA-06/15/1983 San Fran). They were married about 1934?. Their son Hugh was born in 1935.

Actually I'm researching all the Doughertys who were descended from John Doherty and Hannah O'Donnell of Donegal Ireland. They had nine children. James Calvin would have been their grandchild through the second marriage of James Raymond and Georgia Hill of Sandpoint Idaho.

Any info or questions please contact me!

He was born circa 1877, the son of John and Annie (Middleton) Dougherty of Stamford Township, now part of the city of Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. He had 4 siblings: George (b.c1870), Martha//Mattie (b.c.1872, married John Jenny of Niagara Falls, New York), Sarah Alma (b.c.1879, probably did not survive childhood), and Mabel Carrie (b.c. 1886).

I believe John, the son of Samuel and Mary Dougherty, to be my great-great uncle so I am interested in what became of Hollous and his siblings.

I am hoping that someone will recognize this very unusual given name and will contact me as I have Dougherty information to share.

Sharon
Welland, Ontario, Canada

Dockerty/Dougherty

My great mother's name was Mary Dougherty. She married great grand father Nathaniel (Abrahams) Braham in 1898 in Huddersfield, England. I have found her family listed in the 1881 and 1891 England Census but under the name Dockerty. Her father's name was Andrew and mother's name Selina. She had 3 brothers listed on the 1881 Census, Patrick, Thomas and John. I know on the 1891 census there was a brother listed Andrew and a few other children but no Selina. Can anyone help me find more information out on this family? Until Friday of last week, I could not find anything on this family. Any help would and is appreciated.

Marcellus Milsted Dougherty born 1862

I am researching Marcellus Dougherty's mother, Patience (Anita, Annie, Patina) Daugherty Milsted Dougherty. Patience married George Milsted in 1858 in Washington county, Alabama - Marcellus was their son - then they moved to Texas. George Milsted ?died and Patience married Edward Dougherty in 1868 in Cameron county, Texas - Marcellus was listed on census records as having the surname of Dougherty - he must have been adopted by his stepfather. Marcellus Dougherty married Emma ?surname in Texas. He served as deputy sheriff in Hidalgo county at the turn of the century. Then in 1910, he is a prisoner in the Cameron county, Texas jail. Does anyone know of this family? Thanks.

I just found out that these are my great-great-grandparents, and I was wondering if anyone else out there has a connection. So far all I have are their names and places of birth: James Dougherty was born in Ireland and Jane Gill was born in Bucks County, PA. Their son James Jr. (1871 - 1939) was my grandfather; his son Eugene Thomas (1898 - 1964) was my grandfather. Most of my Dougherty ancestors lived in Philadelphia, PA. Thanks!

Dougherty Family of Spencer Co. Indiana & Daviess Co. Kentucky

My great-grandmother was Amanda J. Dougherty, born March 1863, in Indiana, to Moses Dougherty, born in Indiana, and Amelia Anna Hester, born in Kentucky. I have only recently been able to determine (hopefully) that Amanda did have brothers, James, b. abt 1864, William, b. abt 1868, Leander, b. abt 1872, and Robert, b. abt 1876, and at least one sister, Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie", born abt. 1884. Dates are based on the 1880 Spencer Co. Indiana census, and on Lizzie's marriage record.

Moses Dougherty died between 1876 and 1879, as Anna remarried in January, 1880, to Paul Kromel/Kramel. Anna died in June 1882 in Spencer Co., and her 6 month old daughter, Katie, died in July, 1882.

The two girls were not on the 1880 cenus and are believed to have already crossed the river into Daviess County, KY.

Mary Elizabeth Dougherty, born in Spencer Co. IN , living in Owensboro, Daviess County, KY married Julius R. Hollingsworth, of Daviess Co. KY., son of James R. and Cynthia M. Hollingsworth, on 10 July 1882, in Spencer County, Indiana. Amanda Jane Dougherty, married her first husband, Walter Hester, in 1888, and divorced in 1896. She married her second, James Duke, in 1896, both the marriages and the divorce was in Daviess Co. Kentucky.

According to Amanda's obituary, in May 1924, her brother, William, and sister, Lizzie Bartlett, was still alive and both living in Rockport, Spencer Co., Indiana.

I would like to find out what happened to the children of Moses and Anna Dougherty and where Moses and Anna were married and buried. I have not found a license for Moses and Anna in either Spencer Co., In. or Daviess County, KY, but I feel they spent their married life in Spencer County.
I could have totally missed the license while searching.

Any help on this family would truly be appreciated. I know I have Dougherty cousins out there somewhere.

Thanks, Linda J.

Dougherty marries a Doherty

A little confusion here since a Doherty married a Dougherty. My grandfather John Michael was born around 1905 in Brooklyn NY. To add to the confusion he took the Dougherty spelling and others in the family took the Doherty spelling. Again, not sure of which! He had brothers named Edward, Charlie, Neil, plus another brother, and a couple sisters. Barrett was the married name of one of the sisters. (Mary I believe!) The mother was a Rose Doherty or Dougherty. They owned a bar in Brooklyn. Other family names attached were McLaughlin and Peil. Charlie settled in California and I believe Edward left with him. John died around 1959. Any help or connections would be great! Thanks Bob

Dougherty family in CA

William Patrick Dougherty and his wife Jane O'Connor had two children James and Elizabeth.. I believe they were in the Santa Cruz area of CA, and William supposedly was a very weatlhy man in the lumber business I think.

I would very much like to learn more about James and Elizabeth. Who did they marry? Where and when? Are there any decendents out there now-if so who? where?
'
William also had two brothers I think Phillip and either James or Charles that were living with William, Jane and the children, at some point. I'D like to try to find out who they married, where, when and if they had any children-who they may be.

Jane O'Connor(William Patrick wife) was the sister of
Matthew and Patrick O'Connor (and Elizabeth, Thomas,
Catherine, Margaret, and Anastasia(annie))
Matthew and Patrick married Bradley sisters Mary and Margaret and had large families. Mary and Margaret were my grandfathers sisters, . His name was Patrick Bradley(1864-1931) and he had stayed in Boston after immigrated about 1894 or so. He married MaryAnn O'Donnell and had 6 children.
The O'Connor childre Jane(and all her siblings) were born in eastern Canadan somewhere. I think William Patrick Dougherty may have been born in Scotland or England.

I would appreciate any help with James and Elizabeth Dougherty here though. and/or Phillip and James or Charles.

Dates escape me but I think around 1870 or so .
I cannot access census records, nor can I read them as I'm legally blind so if inf is found there, if you can, please type and e-mail to us at Nsambradley@aol.com

Thank you
D

Doherty--Tawnyinah, Co. Mayo to Philadelphia, PA

I am descended from Bridget Doherty, who married Thomas Halligan of Tawnyinah (Tavneena), County Mayo, Ireland. My ancestor was Bridget's son Hugh (b. 1891), who came to the US (into NY in 1915) with two of his cousins, James (b. 1891) and Michael (b. 1896). Hugh went to stay with his "Cousin Molly Doherty" in Philadelphia (Tacoma St. in Germantown). James and Michael went to stay with their sister "Kate Doherty" in Philadelphia (Burbridge St.). Hugh's older sister Mary (b. 1883) came to Philadelphia in 1904 with two Doherty girls--Mary and Molly--and Ellen McLoughlin, all from the same area. All four of the girls were picked up by "Aunt Kate Maher", of Tacoma St. in Philadelphia. It appears that the Molly that immigrated with the two Marys was the same one who picked up Hugh 9 years later. Her address is listed on the ship manifest as the same as their aunt's (Kate Maher) address 9 year earlier. All of this immigration information comes from the ship manifests.

I have only recently learned about the Doherty cousins coming to the US and I am trying to find out as much as possible about them and also about the "Aunt Kate Maher". I would greatly appreciate any help.

Thanks,

L.
