Hi Joan,

I believe I have found the David that Merilla married. His name was David Ward Belknap (and was an older brother of Josiah who married Julia Ann Douglas).

According to the 1850 census in Dryden, Tompkins, New York, David was married to a Candace [Yates] and had three children. Amos, aged 18, George, aged 14, and Aurilla, aged 1. Candace is likely the mother of Aurilla, but was young when Amos was born (she would have been 16). Another possibility is that Aurilla is Marilla's daughter and that Marilla may have died as a complication from childbirth.

We know that Merilla and David had a son named Amos, and also that she is buried in Slaterville (Caroline, Tompkins, New York) having died in 1849. I believe that this David fits with the David that married Merilla.

I'm also still looking at Eliza, but I do believe she married Justin, not Jesse. More research is needed to verify that either way though.

Gem Hambler

Hi All,

This line of Douglass are my direct line. For the time period that you are referring to-- early 1800's they are living in Wayne County Pa. North Eastern Pa. John Douglas and Sybil Merrill, son Robbins are my ancestors. The connection between the Belknap and Douglas family, I believe goes like this:
Julia Douglas married Josiah Belknap
Eliza Douglas married Jesse Belknap
Marilla Douglas married David Belknap.

My "source": History of Wayne Pike and Monroe County Pennsylvania, Alfred Mathews 1886. Pages 622-623.

You could also contact the Wayne County Historical Society in Honesdale Pa. for further verification.

Hope this helps,

Joan

I LOVE that book, lol!

my Douglases are on page 166, Gilbert Denison Douglas, where the info is pretty much correct.

At one time, I was bored and figured I would do his siblings and started with the oldest one, Edmund, p163. That one they were off! they totally left off some of the older children, including one that was a doctor but had passed away in 1831, before the book was published. So I would say, if your info says it was Eliza and not Merilla, then go with that.

you might try findagrave too - I've been putting all Douglases I can find on there, including the females, PA, NY, RI, etc.. If I find a webpage or book I'll load them on there :-)

Julie in Calif

Hi Julie.

The only reference I've found for the places of birth for John Douglas' children was in a book called "A collection of family records : with biographical sketches, and other memoranda of various families and individuals bearing the name Douglas or allied families of that name" by Charles Henry James Douglas.

He shows the following:
born at Pawlet, Rutland County, Vermont, United States
NANCY: b. Oct 23, 1799 d. Mar 9, 1814
ROBBINS: b. Feb 21, 1801 m. Hannah Bolkcom
ELECTA: b. Aug 14, 1802. m1. Jacob Stalker, m2. ? Mitchell
FANNY: b. May 9 1804. d. July 24, 1825
ELIZA: b. Jul 20, 1806. d. Sep 6, 1837
HENRY POOLE: b. Nov 22, 1808. d. Mar 29, 1814
MERILLA: b. Jul 4, 1810. m. ? Belknap ***

born at Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, United States
CLARISSA: b. Jul 16, 1812. m. Seth Yale
NANCY: b. Apr 4, 1815. m. John Rutledge
JULIA ANN: b. Oct 31, 1816. m. Josiah Belknap d. (s.p.) Jul 22, 1837.

*** I am currently trying to discern whether it was Merilla or Eliza Ann that married Justin Belknap. All the research i have seen shows it to be Eliza Ann but this one reference shows it to be Merilla.

G Hambler

And Tioga co, PA is next to Chautauqua cou, NY

G. - which county in Rutland County, VT? Mine was in Tinmouth & Wallingord in between CT and Chautauqua Co, NY. I rented a film 944196 on Tinmouth, and only found my Gilbert's marriage and a Calvin Douglass' death, maybe he is yours?

(0944196_1_bk2_p256) 1814 – Oct 4 – Calvin DOUGLAFS AE 12 years. Eliza's sister Julia Ann married Justin's brother, Josiah Belknap.

I'm still working on verifying all information, but this is the information I have so far:

Eliza was born 20 Jul 1806 in Rutland County, Vermont and died 6 Sep 1837 in Tompkins, New York. Justin was born 1896-1900 in New York and he died 27 Jun 1865 in Jackson, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. (Justin had two other wives, Nancy Morgan and Catherine Wrought).

Julia Ann was born 31 Oct 1816 in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania and died 22 Jul 1837 in Lebanon Township, Wayne County.
Hi Olice,
It is always a pleasure to find a new cousin. There are still gaps in information about Sarah Douglass, but after she, her mother and stepfather left Arkansas and moved to NE Texas I believe she had a happier life for several years. Sarah married Simpson Barrow in 1853 in Fannin County and they had four children--Simpson Edward, Agness, Nancy, and Mary Ann. Simpson Edward is my great grandfather. Then came the Civil War. Simpson died in 1862 while in the military. In the 1870 census Nancy is with Agness Womack Waller, who was widowed. I can't find the other children although they may have been with the Barrows. I have searched for my Barrow family during that time, but don't find them until the 1900 census when Simpson Edward reappears with a family of his own. Agness and Mary Ann survived, married, and had families. Nancy V. may have survived, but I have been unable to track her. The 1870 census mortality schedule indicates Sarah Douglass Marks Barrow died in August 1869 in Fannin County. I have searched cemetery and other records, but can find nothing about where she was buried.

Sadly, I don't have a picture of Sarah, but I have one of Simpson Edward.

I hope this information is helpful. I live on the Arkansas/Texas border and did research in courthouses and libraries in Hunt, Fannin and Cooke Counties in Texas, searched LDS microfilm and, of course, used Ancestry.com and other websites. Most of my information came from those sources.

I look forward to hearing from you again.
Hello Sandra, it so good to hear from you. Sarah Douglas was my 2nd great-grandmother. Her son Junus Douglass Marks was my great-grandfather. I know very little about her, all I know seems so very sad. I would to know about her life after the divorce, her second family, where she is buried and I wish I could just see one photo of her. I am sitting here with tears because this would mean so very much to me.
The part that I know a little about seems so very unfair to me, mem had so much power in those days and women were sometimes treated so very badly.I wish she could know how much my cousin and I talk about her and all want to know anything we can about. I am a 71 year old lady and am so excited that you would share with me.
My email is oliced@wmconnect.com, I live in NE Texas.
Olice

Sarah E. Douglass is my 2nd great grandmother. I am a descendent of her "second family", and have done a lot of research on the family. Sarah is one of my favorite ancestors as her life story is so compelling. What information do you need? Is the information from your cousin about the Marks family or her second marriage? I look forward to hearing from you.

Where have you looked?
Conneticut has great records!!
Try googling Barbour - and you will find a lot of webpages - if you are looking for originals then the County Clerk's office of whichever county will have them.
If they got married there, it should be easy to find.

I am seeking more information on Jane Douglass, b. 15 Nov 1833, d. 26 Aug 1878, m. Ebenezer Fitch. Her father, I believe, was Edmund Douglass, b. 1 Sep 1805, d. 27 Nov 1835, m. Saran Hinman. I believe Edmund's father was David Douglass, Rev War Vet who served in Connecticut Militia. He was born 2 May 1758, d. 7 Jul 1851 in Verona, NY.

Any information you have confirming these relationships would be very much appreciated.
You might consider checking out the Henrietta, TX area to see if any Douglass family members settled near the widowed Katie Douglass Lowry. John Lowry died a couple of months before Katie gave birth to their 10th child. At the time of John's death their oldest child was 16. According to family, John would have had siblings living in the Henrietta, TX area at the turn of the century; so, if there were no Douglass kin near Katie, she would most likely have remained close to the Lowry/Lowery families. Some of John's siblings were Maude Caroline Brite, Emily Darnell, Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzie" Campbell, George A., Will P., Eula 1/2 sister, Henry 1/2 brother, and Laura Trout-George.

I received information from my aunt today showing John W. Lowry b. 3/13/1860 married Katie L. Douglass b.9/8/1865. I don't know where either were born. They are said to have married on 1/1/1883 (or 1884). Both are buried in Bluegrove, TX. They had 10 children. Their 10 children are: Essie b. 1885 in Grayson Co.; Amy (Amie) b. 1886 in Collin Co; Oscar b. 1887 (Hunt? Co.); Monroe b. 1890 in Collin Co.; Roy b. 1893 in Collin Co; Nizzie b.1895 in ?; Watie b. 1897 in ?; Johnny b. 1899 in ?; Andy b. 1900 in ?; Johnnie b. 1902 in Clay Co. All 10 children appear to have been born in TX.

I hope this information might be of some help to you. My family tie is to the Lowry/Lowery family, and Katie Douglass is the only Douglass name I have.

The photo of the two little girls and two boys is interesting. I know Sarah had a second family after she left Arkansas. Her mother Agness Womack Douglas had married a second time when Sarah was abt 4 years old. This was to Joseph Waller of Shelby Co, Tenn. I have this info from a cousin who has done much research and written several books on Marks/Douglas families.

This is my line. John Voorheese Douglass's daughter Marian was my great-grandmother. Kate Slinkard Douglass is buried at Greenwood in Ft. Worth in a family plot that is still in use. You can find her on Find-A-Grave as Catherine Charity Slinkard Douglas. I am Laura1814 there so you can contact me that way. I've been trying to connect all the Douglasses there.

I can also be reached at laura at chinet dot com.

I too am stuck with John Douglass Sr. My best guess is that he came to Indiana as one of a group of Irish immigrants who were brought in to work on the Wabash Canal project, which ran through Green County not far from Newberry, where Kate's family lived. I have not even managed to verify his naturalization to confirm that he came from Ireland.

I have a free account here that only allows me to read and post forum messages, but not to view anything else substantive, or even to send private messages. I would love to hear from any of you. Thanks!

It appears that I am a direct decedent of Conrad Rutter/Bacher.

Do you by chance have any information regarding Conrad Rutter/Bacher being married to Jane/Margaret Douglass? In reading the "Annals of Lancaster County" it indicates that they were married and that she (Jane) was a direct descendent (possibly sister) of Archibald Douglass.

Any information would be most helpful.

Thank You,

Michele Pineda

Douglass family of Halifax, Co, VA

My 4th great grandfather was Larkin Douglas, b ca 1785 in Halifax Co, VA, married Susan Clardy in Halifax 1807, moved to Smith Co, TN in 1820, then was in Allen Co, Ky in 1822. Smith Co at the time was on the border with Allen Co. Larkin and George Douglass sold their land on the same day in Halifax and in the 1820 Smith Co TN census, there is a George Douglas as well as Larkin. Is this Larkin's brother? There is also a Susannah Douglas, age over 45. I believe she is their mother. Alexander Douglass died in 1809 in Halifax Co and his wife was Susannah (per the estate settlement, a deed of George's, and a deed she signed with Alexander). In 1806 personal property tax lists, George and Larkin appear in their own names as male tithables (no property) with Alexander Douglass. (same day) Alexander Douglass Jr. appeared in an earlier tax list with Alexander Sr. Also, Alexander Sr. had 2, 3 then 4 male tithables on his tax list prior to these dates which leads me to believe that Alexander Douglass Sr. was the father of Larkin, George and Alexander Jr. Alexander Sr. was the son of Mary Douglass Dixon (named in her will) and Mary was the sister of William Douglass, Anne Douglass Dixon and possibly Jane Douglass Jones. Who was their father? There are so many Johns, Williams, and Thomases in Halifax that I get really confused! Are these Douglasses connected to the Douglass family in Lancaster Co, PA?

William George Douglass, b. 1768, Lincolnshire, England

Has anyone who has this person in their tree realised that William's mother, Mary, was born in 1763 and his father, William, was born in 1755?
Makes them a little young to have a son born in 1768.
I am in the same position, so will have to start again and look for the correct parents of William and his siblings.
If anyone has the correct data to solve this problem, a copy of it would be appreciated.

Sorry to spoil a large number of family trees

Sharyn

I'm not related to this family line but whilst researching my own family have collected a lot of info about the Sutherin family, and have over 800 people on file, at least 340 ( including spouses and children of female Sutherins )connected into a family tree. If you would like to E-mail me at CSotheran@aol.com and let me know if there is anything specific you want to know I will pass on what I have.

Catherine

May be a long shot but I just stumbled upon this message. Wondering if we could trade information on the Sutherins from Northumberland. My 4th great grandfather was James Sutherin (married to Elizabeth Hayes). His son, William, immigrated to the US and he is my 3rd great grandfather. I see that you come from James' brother. Would love to know if you have any more information on James, William, their siblings, parents, etc.
