Christine and Peg, daughters of John Fredrick Dovey.
ancestry.com had another freebie and I looked at a census
and discovered that my grandmother (your great grandmother) Teresa Cane or Kain's mother was born in French Canada. Please if you want to contact me my email address is gemdov1228@aol.com because from the previous information we've shared I know we are first cousins once removed. Happy 2012. I hope to hear from you. Grace Dovey

Hello, I think we may have already made some contact a few months ago. I am Gerard Dovey, a descendant of Charles Dovey who emigrated to Australia. He was my great grandfather. I have just found you list of his siblings which I have found very informative. What an enormous family! I am wondering how many of his siblings lived long lives. I suspect one can deduce fairly easily the pressures that lead to great grandad picking up his family and leaving for the other side of the world.

Hello Liz, Further to my earlier note.
I have found some notes on the back of an old photograph my great uncle Jack Eaton took, and it shows a relationship between (Charles) Harry Dovey and a Dorothy Dovey. I was wondering if he married Dorothy (who I remember as "Aunty Dot") or if she may have been his sister? Also, did my grandfather have another (Australian) Brother "Thomas". My email address is gegedovey1@yahoo.com.au, I would LOVE to get more information. I am also wondering if our Dovey line is connected at all with the Dovey line that includes Margaret Dovey who married (later) Prime Minister Gough Whitlam, and was the daughter of Justice Dovey, a great Australian High court judge of around the 40s. This is a great family myth in my family, and I would love to verify or discount it.

Dear Liz,
Thank you so very much for your reply and your invaluable information. I have just started this quest for my roots, so found what you offered very useful indeed.
I remember now my "aunty" (in fact great aunt) Elsie. She was a very kind woman, and I suspect she may have been married to Jack (John) Eaton, a quite important photographer in 1920s 30s Melbourne and Victoria. I have a number of his photographs in my home, and he is well represented in Australian national and victorian collections. There was an Aunty "Bob" when I was a child. I am wondering if she was Elsie's sister? I am VERY interested in getting more information, especially about earlier English connections. Can I help you with any filling in of gaps in your knowledge of the Australian journey of the Dovey name?

Hi,my name is Liz and I have heaps of info on your line of the Dovey family.
The family travelled from Antwerp, Belgium to Melbourne via the "Salier" arriving in Melbourne on the 21st December 1888.
The Public Record Office Victoria has the family listed as "Dovay" on the Index of Inward Passenger Lists for British, Foreign and NZ Ports but when you read the actual transcript it seems to be spelt as "Dovey".
The family is listed as
Charles Dovey, 38, Painter, English
Fanny Dovey, 37, English
Harry Dovey, 10, English
Elise Dovey, 8, English
Rosie Dovey, 2, English

Fanny's maiden name was Baker and she was born in New Romney, Kent. Harry is my great grandfather Charles Henry (Harry). Elise is actually Elsie. Sydney wasn't born until after they were in Australia. I have been researching the Dovey's for 28 years and can send you plenty of info back to their early years in Birmingham. Regards, Liz
Hello, I am a Dovey from Melbourne, Australia. I come from a family of 5 children born here to Colin Thomas Dovey, who was the son of Sydney Thomas Dovey, farmer of Gippsland Victoria, who earlier in his life lived in Camberwell, Victoria. I am seaking information on his ancestry, and how my lineage came to be in Australia from England. I have heard that the family arrived possibly in the 1880s.

My name is Dovey but I don't think I'm from the same branch as your family but there was a Grace Dovey in Fulton, NY. I know as that is my name and so uncommon in the US that we were the only 2 Grace Doveys in this country. With the power of the Internet I found Grace Dovey in Fulton, NY and saw that she passed away a few years ago. She would have been over a hundred if she had lived. So that must be an ancestor of yours. I'm sorry I don't have any more information to help you. My branch of the Dovey family came from Birmingham, England. My grandfather was Samuel Dovey and he immigrated to Brooklyn, NY.

Sorry it's taken me so long to respond to your post but I don't belong to ancestry.com and only can get on during free trials. Yes it was your uncle Jerry that my cousin Alice saw in California. Alice lived in Studio City and her husband was a TV producer Charles Larson. He produced the FBI Series, Trapper John and Cade's County among other shows. Yes Howard and Arthur moved to Sun City Arizona. Howard's ashes are in the Grand Canyon. His grandson was a pilot and spread them over the Canyon. I would love to hear more about you so please if you want to email me I welcome it. gemdov1228@aol.com. I've lived in the NYC area all my life being born in Queens, growing up in Jersey and now back in Queens. I work in advertising but I'm semi retired. I'm finishing up a gig at BBDO Ad agency. I'm fascinated by the show Who Do You Think You Are and now with extra time on my hands I would love to find out more about the Dovey line. I only go back as far as Samuel Dovey and Teresa Cane. It's interesting that the one part of the Dovey family that I did not know was Fred and now I'm in touch with his grand daughters. Grace Dovey

Hi, just a little bit more information to add from my sisters post. Fred Dovey moved to Atlanta, Georgia and passed away in 1959. I and my siblings never met Fred or anyone from the Dovey side of the family other than my Dad's (John Frederick Dovey) brother Jerry and sister Charlotte of whom we were quite fond. Sadly, my Aunt Charlotte just passed away two weeks ago, being the last of her immediate family. I had lived in Long Beach, California in the 70's and my Uncle Jerry also lived there and I do remember him going to visit Alice. I think she lived on Long Beach Blvd. Uncle Jerry and Aunt Charlotte then lived out most of the rest of their days in Scottsdale, Arizona. I remember Uncle Jerry saying that Arthur and Howard lived somewhere in Arizona, I'm not sure about that though.

Yes it seems that we are cousins. The way I'm reading this your father John would have been my first cousin as your grandfather Fred was my uncle. I didn't know him. I knew Arthur, Howard,George and Alice. Beatrice passed away before I was born. My dad was Clifford. All the aunts and uncles have passed and only my cousins Ronnie and Betty daughters of Alice are alive. My dad and Alice were the extra dividends of Samuel and Theresa (your great grandparents) and they were a lot younger than the other siblings. I think I remember that your grandfather Fred moved out West and passed either in the late 50's or early 60's. My cousin Alice who was Howard's daughter would be a wealth of family information but she passed away last year. I do remember her saying she saw your father I think in LA. Also I knew Fred had a daughter Charlotte. I always wondered what happened to my cousins from Uncle Fred. I have also seen Theresa Cain spelled Kane and also the Irish spelling Teresa. I thought she (my grandmother;your great grandmother) was born in the USA but Alice shared with me before she passed that Theresa came over with a sister from Ireland. Not sure if my email address will come up but you are welcome to contact me - gemdov1228@aol.com. I live in New York. My sister had found information that did include Theresa Cain (also spelled Kane) as our great grandmother.
I am hoping that you will see this post and reply, as we are surely related.

Hello - I'm looking to find any descendents of the Nebraskan born actress, Alice Dovey, who died in Tarzana LA, California. (Aug 1884 - 12 Jan 1969).

I'm an academic, researching the life of the author P.G. Wodehouse, and I gather that he was a great admirer of hers. If anyone who is related to Alice Dovey might be able to help, I'd be most grateful to hear from you.
Dovey

Dovey is a very uncommon name in the US. I'm a descendent of Samuel Dovey born in Birmingham, England probably about 1870. I believe his ancestors came from Wales. There is a Dovey river and Aberdovey there. My cousin who is a research librarian said that the Welsh "cowboys" would herd their cattle to Birningham for sale and somewhere along the line my ancestors settled in Birmingham. My grandfather eventually came to live in Brooklyn, New York and married Theresa Cain an orphan and had 7 children - Howard, Arthur, Fred, George, Beatrice, Alice and my father Clifford. Any information that anyone has regarding the Dovey family line would be appreciated. It's a common name in England, but not in the USA. And it's pronounced with the long O (as in the past tense of dive with a Y), not lovey dovey. I'm assuming that is how everyone else pronounces the name.

Jan:

My Great Grandmother was George Edward Dovey's daughter. I am confused by your line. You state that a Dovey married a Sarah in England with children Issac, Edward George, William, Dick and Sarah E. Dovey. The IGI from familysearch.org records William Dovey married Eilenor or Ellenor (Ellen) Rogers 1/20/1818 in Wolstanton, Stafford, England with children Edward George (Chr 1/3/1819), Ann (Chr 4/1/1821), William (Chr 8/1/1824), Mary Ann (Chr 11/5/1826), Richard (Chr 11/1/1829), Isaac (Chr 5/26/1833) all born in Wolstanton Wesleyan, Tunstall by Stoke Upon Trent, Stafford, England; and Francis (Chr 7/2/1837) born Bethesda Chapel Albion Street-Methodist New Connexion, Shelton, Stafford, England. Edward George married Jane Ann Johnson (Born 1827). They had the following children George Edward Dovey (Born 10/21/1854 in Nashville, TN), Oliver Cromwell Dovey (Born 1856 in Nashville, TN), Horatio Nelson Dovey (Born 1863 in Nashville, TN). Edward George and Jane Ann Dovey moved to Plattsmouth, NE in 1862. Could you give me more information on Sarah E. and her birth information? I am wondering if perhaps Sarah was born to another wife of William Dovey or if she was a cousin. I also do not have any information on Isaac or Richard or their descendants. Apparently the Dovey family is in some way related to the Lloyd George family in England (the prime minister) but I have been unable to put that together yet. Look forward to hearing back from you!
Hi, I've just added a little data to the fledgling http://www.dovey.co.uk/ - mainly relating to a particular branch of Doveys from the Worcester area (UK).

These are descendents of (John) Thomas Dovey who died in Worcester in 1860. I think one branch settled around Johnstown, Fulton, New York, United States, and that another moved to the Wolverhampton area (UK).

If any of this rings a bell then I'd love to hear from you.
My husband is a descendent of William M. Dovey, born in Bleadon, Somerset, England, (per English 1871 census for Wedmore), lived in Iowa. He was born December 27, 1839. Have his obit. He had a sister named Caroline Dovey, who was postmistress in a small town in Australia. I'm wondering if your Caroline, could be a relative. There are several other children in this family, John born about 1837, lived in Nebraska, his first wife was barried in the Hazel Green Cemetery, Etna Township, Hardin county, Iowa. There also was Betsy, Henry, Mary, Sarah, Sophia. Not sure how much of that information is corrrect. Parents were William M. Dovey and Mary Palmer. Do you have anymore information that would be a help to me. Thank You in Advance.
