If you are referring to Duncan C. Dow who was in Thurman NY in 1880, there wouldn't be anything to help in The Book of Dow, since Duncan's father William shows a father b. Scotland.

The Book of Dow has nothing on him. Its focus is on Dows descended from early immigrant's - 1600s.

I have a copy of the book and would be glad to check it for specific individuals. If you have a spouse name, that helps narrow it down. Any dates or locations are also helpful.

The book is on HeritageQuest which is available in many places through your local library. I can access it from home through my county library system, and so I can search it that way, also.

Most of the book concerns descendants from 2 immigrant Dows: Henry in Watertown MA by 1637 and Thomas in Newbury MA by 1639. These two Dows were not related.

The Book of Dow is a collection of genealogies compiled by Robert Piercy Dow. The collection is based on the work of about 6 different genealogists but Robert assembled them into a fairly coherent collection. It focuses on Dow families the immigrated during Colonial times. As I recall there are about 7 "lines" of different Dows listed.

The book is still available for purchase despite it's 1929 publishing date. There are many extracts with an internet search on the title.

I don't see any connection between the Doyle and Dow names. Irving Luce Dow can supposedly be traced back to immigrant ancestor Henry Dow, who came to Watertown MA from England in 1637.

Irving Luce Dow married Beatrice Patrick. Her mother was Katie Doyle. So a Dow had a Doyle as mother-in-law.

The census record didn't show any relationship between Connolly and the Doyles. Not sure how that can be tracked down unless he appears in another census with relatives. I didn't look at that at all. I also didn't look for Katie's parents beyond the one census. Since she was in an orphanage on the next census, I assumed they were deceased, or at least no longer in the area.

I didn't check for death records of her parents.

Interesting....so Dow was derived from Doyle (or so it seems). I'm wondering, what relation was John Connolly to the Doyle family? During my lengthy researching last night, I noticed that that family name (Connolly) seemed to crop up quite a bit during the 1870 (and before) years.
I did see most of that when searching through Ancestry's records last night. I do thank you for that information though. I'll have to print it all out and let my father look at it, he would know the names of most of his relatives on that side and could confirm who's who within the family.

I was hoping to really find more information regarding Abner W. & Carrie Harris, Patrick & Katherine Stewart & Fred Everett Dow. I don't think my father knows much regarding them and haven't been able to find much in regards to them (unless another family member has that information and it isn't listed on Ancestry.com).
I checked in the "Keystone Kuzzins" database located in the Erie County Genealogy Society website. Plugged in the name "Dow", and it came up with quite a few, but no marriage listed for William Little Dow. In fact, it didn't list anything (tax records/death/cemetery) for him. Interesting!

Carolyn

I'd be happy to supply the address of a site with pages from the book for most of the Dow line leading up to William Little Dow. I also have downloaded a few pages from the book (it's on Heritage Quest) to go with the online information and can email those to you as PDF files. I'd need an e-mail address to send the info to.

You can contact me directly at florence@gargaro.com if interested.
Possible answer is Lydia Dow was daughter of William Little Dow and Betsy Kimball Reynolds.

I found a site - not sure it is correct, but may be worth checking.

http://www.kykinfolk.com/breathitt/databases/robertreynolds_...

It has information on the Reynolds surname and gives the marriage of William Little Dow to Betsey Kimball Reynolds.

I have copied and pasted it at the end of this reply.

Census records show Lydia Dow in PA with William L Dow and Betsy Dow. I am assuming husband, wife and daughter. The name Lydia could be for Betsy's mother, Lydia Pressy.

Book of Dow has William Little Dow b. 1818. It says he evidently died without issue - but if he moved to PA, then that could explain the reason the book's author did not know he married and had children. I can provide more on the Dow line as given in The Book of Dow if you think that is the correct line.

Here's the section on Betsy and her parents:

1335. Jonathan Reynolds was born on 28 Jan 1791 and died on 29 Jul 1873 in Erie, PA at age 82. Another name for Jonathan was Jonathan Runnells.

General Notes: Ben Myers; Runnells GenForum; Mar 20, 2001; Jonathan b 1791 d 1873,son of Joseph & Joanna Farnum Runnells. Jonathan migrated to PA. sometime after 1836.All 12 children were born New Hampshire. He married Lydia Pressy in 1812.

Sue Luhman; Runnells GenForum; Jun 29, 2001; I am desended from Jo ha th an Runnells and Lydia Pressy. They had a daughter named Betsy Kimball Runnells born: April 10, 1813 Merrimack, Concord, N.H. died: unkown, mo st like ly Erie, PA? married: William Little Dow Jan. 8, 1844, Eri e, PA

Jonathan married Lydia Pressy in 1812. Lydia was born about 1795.

The child from this marriage was:

2048 F i. Betsy Kimball Reynolds was born on 10 Apr 1813 in Concord, NH. Another name for Betsy was Betsy Kimball Runnells.

Betsy married William Little Dow on 8 Jan 1844 in Erie, PA.

F_Gargaro-

Actually I was wrong, you are right!!!! Her names is Lydia. After looking up more info, I just realized this. I only knew her as a possible "Elizabeth" from word of the mouth through older family members. After looking into it, it is the same Elton, because his mother and father are the same, as it would have been for "Elizabeth". Thank you!! I'm hoping now that I have her correct name, I will be able to trace her back further.

What is the source of your information that Elton Thompson had a wife named Elizabeth Dow? Did that source give an age for her?

There was an Elton Thompson in PA with wife Lydia in the 1880 census. Is he the same Elton Thompson?

Kayla,

My Rebecca would have been probably 2 generations back as she was born 5/11/1803. I too have come up without answers about her parents or siblings. But in the 1820 census in Erie County, PA there were other Dows living quite close to my 3rd great grandfather and Rebecca. I keep hoping one day someone will make the connection and will contact me after they see my tree on Ancestry.

Carolyn

I just wish I could trace her back and find out who her parents were, because I'm almost sure she is probably part of your Dow family. This research gets very confusing sometimes...lol

My great-grandfather was George A. Dow of Laconia, NH. His son, my grandfather, was Guy A. Dow Sr. He married Edna (Dow) and they had 6 children, my mother Esther being one of them. Their eldest son was named Guy A. Dow Jr. Then my grandparents divorced and he remarried a woman named Eileen, and had more children, but the only name I know for sure is Guy A. Dow Jr. (he named a son from his 2nd marriage the same as one of his sons from his 1st marriage. I believe the Eileen you are looking for is the sister of the 2nd Guy A. Dow Jr. This may cause some confusion when doing a tree. Both my grandparents were deceased before I was born. Feel free to view my tree. Hope this helps.

I can access the pages through Heritage Quest.

If you email me directly I will fill you in on the details. The book has Levi as son of Tristram Dow and Rachel Fowler.

Tristram is listed as the son of Zaccheus Dow and wife Janna. The line traces back to immigrant ancestor Henry Dow.

It has Abbie C. married George G Small and had 9 children, but no details are given.

Florence

However, I have found some things that might help with the Thompson line.

1860 Census has Elton with likely parents.
Name: Caleb Thompson
Age in 1860: 34
Birthplace: Pennsylvania
Home in 1860: Union, Erie, Pennsylvania
Name Age
Caleb Thompson 34
Lucy Ann Thompson 30
Elton Thompson 8
Flora Thompson 4
Hatten Thompson 27

1850 has Caleb with likely parents:
Name: Caleb Thompson
Age: 25
Birthplace: Pennsylvania
Home in 1850: Union, Erie, Pennsylvania
Gender: Male
Family Number: 75
Household Members:
Name Age
Joel Thompson 63
Mary Thompson 55
Caleb Thompson 25
John Thompson 22
Joel H Thompson 17
Lucilla Thompson 15
Charles Thompson 12

Rootsweb search for Caleb with wife Lucy brought up a number of World Connect files with info that might help. Had Lucy as Lucy Ann Harris, and Joel's wife as Mary Mulvin.

Unfortunately the 1870 census on Ancestry fails to locate anyone in Erie Co. PA. Not sure why that is.

The 1880 census shows an Elton Thompson in Union, Erie Co. Pa with son William, but wife is Lydia, not Elizabeth.
Hello! Yes, William Dexter Thompson was born on feb 27 1877 in PA. I have information that he died on May 28 1956. He is my great great grandfather. He married Mary Melinda Perry from PA, and had 3 children that I am aware of. Russell Alonzo Thompson, Adelaide Thompson, and Kenneth Perry Thompson. Kenneth Perry Thompson is my great grandfather. Kenneth Perry Thompson went on to marry Hazel Mae Murphy and had children, one of which was Kenneth David Thompson, my grandfather. Could this be the same William Dexter Thompson? I don't know if the dates are exact...but they are approximate. Thank you!!!

Thank you so much!

Tammy, my name is Mike. Along the Mason-Dow line. Aunt Faye, as known to me, was my Grandmother(Helen Esther Mason)'s sister. My Mother's Aunt. Aunt Faye was a very kind, wonderful woman. My memory of Bill Penny was only in childhood. My mother or my Aunt may have some answers to your questions. You can contact me at mu4ic@aol.com

thank you for a quick reply. Yes we need more research as those are not the parents I was looking for . I also have a note from an elderly relative that she believed "my" Archibald had married a madge Dodson. but i cant find that either !

The scottish system of naming boys after their grandfathers can often mean cousins having the same name form a common grandfather. That could be the case here?

thanks for your help Ken

The only information I have is:
Archibald Wilson married Isabella Dow Dec 26, 1913, Falkirk
They had at least 2 children that I'm aware of:
Phoebe Wilson born abt 1915 Falkirk
Francis Dow Wilson born abt 1922 Falkirk died 1985 Falkirk.
and Francis Dow Wilson married Jessie Cunningham McLean 1951 in Falkirk.
I just found a note and I have the parents of Archibald Wilson as David Wilson and Catherine Brown. I can't verify this is correct right now. More research to be done.
Is this helpful?
Bob

Hi,
I am researching the Wilon family from Falkirk and have John Wilson born about 1863 married to Agnes Monteith on 22 August 1883. They had a son called Archibald born sometime after that. The rest of the family lived in the Larter area and being in the iron industry may have worked in Carron

Looks a very possible connection with your Archibald marrying Isabella Dow What do you think?
Ken

James Dow of Aberdeen

All I can find is he lived at Gardeners' Hill in Kildrammy, Aberdeen in 1839. I am told he was hung for stealing a sheep, but I can't find any proof he was hung, other than the court documents saying he stold a sheep. Any one have any idea if he would even have a death cert if he was hung......?
