Dowdings of Somerset/Dorset and Air Chief Marshal Hugh Dowding

I am researching the Dowdings of Cucklington, Stoke Trister, Kington Magna, Sturminster Newton etc to see which families might be related. I am also trying to see if Air Chief Marshal Hugh Caswall Tremenheere Dowding of WWII fame might be related as I have traced his line back to Gillingham in Dorset.

Hello Krystle,

I really know where to access information. I'm in the initial phase of gathering or trying to gather information. My husband and I have decided to eventually go to Barbados and try to find information that way.

Barbados is a very small island therefore almost anyone with the same last name is more than likely related.

My grandfather Frederick Edgerton Dowding went to Guyana in South America probably in the late 1920's. My mother thinks that he was around 18 years old at the time. He went there alone, so there aren't any other relatives that went there with him.

Anyway I hope that we could stay in touch and share information.

Thank you for responding.

Hi,

I too am trying to research my family tree. My name is Krystle Dowding, both my father Ronald Dowding was born in Barbados and my Granmother Joan Dowding also. They immigrated here from Barbados in the 1930'2 or 1940's i believe. Do you know where you can begin searching these records, I have had a real problem locating any borth records for Barbados, apparently they keep detail in parishs over there which are not published?

be good to hear from you

Herbert Stanley Dowding or Elizabeth Brine - want to know anything

Hi! My grandfather was semi-adopted by Reuben and Agnes Parsons - we want to know his history before he joined that family. He thought his birth father was also named Herbert Stanley Dowding and that his birth mother may have been named Betty, Bessie or Elizabeth Brine. He was born in August of 1896 (don't know if that is accurate, but close) in Bath, Somerset, England. His cival parish was Penderyn, Esscles parish was St. Llewrwg in the town of Hirwaun, co Glamorgan in Wales. He attended an all boy school in Hirwaun. The Parson's immigrated to Western Canada in the early 1900's. He is listed as a "visitor" in the 1901 census when he was 5 at Parson's home at 45 and 44 Station St. If anyone has ANY information on anyone named Herbert Stanley Dowding or Elizabeth Brine in the Somerset area of England, please write to ejheather@gmail.com Thank you so much! We want to know what happened to his parents, etc.
Hi Sarah,
I don't have an address for William Dowding's family. However I'm now almost certain that Charles Dowding and Susannah Rodd were his parents.Susannah was born in Wandsworth in 1877 but Charles was born in Poplar, maybe that's why these Dowding's are not known to you as they may have originated from Poplar.
Best wishes,
Jenny.

I am out of credit for the 1911 census at the moment. My family were living in Crescent Road at that time.

Take care
Sarah

Hello Sarah,

I am also trying to trace my Dowding family. I have managed to trace back as far as James Dowding b1813 in Cookham, Berkshire.

His father is James Dowding mother Catherine (surname unknown). His fathers birth place is unknown but i know he was a servant. He did not come from Berkshire as i have been to the records office there and there are no other Dowdings listed.

Do you have any details on George b1813 parents? I see a similarity of names with my Dowding ancestors who settled in London in the 1840`s.

My James had a George in 1840, John 1840, Thomas 1843, Julius 1847,Catherine 1849, Alfred 1851, James William 1853-7.Elizabeth born 1856. All were born in London/Middlesex.

I know it is a long shot but you never know. Anyway good luck in tracing your Dowdings.
Regards
Sarah

I'm researching a James Albert Roberts born in England about 1865, who married a Lillie D. Ratcliffe in Feb. 1884 in Marengo, Iowa Co., Iowa. They had one daughter: Bessie. Was James Jr. known as J A Dowding and did he live in Marengo, Iowa Co., Iowa in the 1880s? I believe that J A married Emma Roberts, who I believe is a sister to James Albert Roberts.

Stan, I just called your house and left my phone no.254-785-2355. No, I don't have any info. or program, etc. Just what I know about my immediate siblings. I just got a computer about a month ago. I don't know how to send emails yet. I can look them up but am having trouble figuring out how to send mail. I don't know why it's so complicated at my mail site.... Dumb me I guess. I live in country outside of town called Hico, Tx. We run a bulldozer company. I also have dogs. 13 puppies at the moment! I know, that's crazy. Hope to find them good homes, they are 1/2 lab, 1/2 border collie. Really cute! I fish a lot, we have stocked ponds. Mostly fish for catfish but if we don't get some rain my ponds and fish are going to dry up. My husband's mother is 91 and in a assisted living home and as I told you my "mom" that raised me has alzheimers and is in a home about an hour away from where I live so I stay busy with them. My girls, Tammy, schoolteacher in Boston, MA., Danie'l is a nurse in Jacksonville, Tx., and Jordan works for a Dr. in Sacremento, Ca., she met her husband while stationed in Italy in Navy. We have 6 grandkids, 5 girls and 1 boy. I guess everyone of them are doing ok. What about y'all do you have kids? I'm rambling, I'll close, look forward to hearing from Patricia and you.
First, what is your email address. We are communicating through Ancestry and they don't let the email address out.

Second: Tony Sherville #202, 103 E. Washington St., Appleton, WI 54911.

He just wrote to me a couple of months ago. I did get to meet him a couple of times when Gramma Dowding, your mothers mother was still alive. She raised Tony after your mother ran off. If I have the story correct. a

Third: If you share your phone number my wife would like to call you. She is not much for typing on the computor.

You never did answer, do you have a program you use for geneology, or just in your head. I can try and print off some things for you and send snail mail.

Stan
That would be great! I'm sorry about Patricia's mother being sick. My mother that raised me is in an alzheimer's care facility. It's very sad. Yes, please forward my information to all who would like to correspond. It's easier to do this by email or phone. I don't have any ancestor information anywhere. All I have is my birth certificate. I was born on Jan. 19, 1953 so I am just a little older than Patricia. She and Jorene are close in age. I think Jorene was born in 1954 or 55, not sure. Nora is 10 years younger than me. Thanks for writing me back. Do you know where Tony is now? He went to Jorene's one time but I've never met him. I think she said he had gotten a divorce but am not certain. How many cousins are there? How many brothers and sisters did Margarite have? I'm curious.Write me back ok. Melody

Sorry about the delay on getting back to you. Sometimes Ancestry is good about notifing when I have a response to threads, I must have missed your reply. I will work at getting your information processed. Do you have a geneology program that you use? If so, I could make a ged con file of my information on the Dowdings and send to you. I will try and get more information for you. Your mother sister-in-law, my mother-in-law is one of the last surviving Dowdings. She is presently in the hospital with many physical ailments and the onset of Alzhimers. Delores passed away just this last fall/spring. She was the last of that generation of your mothers siblings. Her children would be very interested in writing and talking with you. They also hold a Dowding Reunion every August, I believe around the second weekend. If it all right I will forward your email address to them?

I found Margarite when I was 20. I had contacted the Postmaster in some town in Illinois and asked did he have any people living in Chana with the last name Dowding. I got that information off my birth certificate because I was never legally adopted. His wife wrote me back and told me about an Abraham and gave me a phone no. He was an uncle. I called and talked to him and he told me that my mother was living in Huntsville, Tx. They also told me that I had a brother name Tony. Since that time I met siblings, Jorene, Nora, Jerry. I also have a brother named Johnny, and Jorene had one name William. My father was J.H. Cooper (deceased) she married him in Calif. They came back to Texas and she left went back to Calif. and that's when she had Jorene and William. She gave them up for adoption. Then she met Charles Hairston, he was in service, and had Nora and Jerry. I was raised by my father's sister and my brother was raised by my father. It's a long story. Anyway I know that Tony's last name was Sherville, and he has a daughter named Amanda and I think a son name Jimmy??? not to sure about that. I was in contact with some of her family in Illinois, (Delores maybe?) It's been several years ago and I can't remember. anyway. It would kind of be interesting to know some of the medical on that side of family, etc.

Hello Melody,

I have Margarite married to a Sherville and Hairston. The only son I have is a Tony Sherville. But, she left the family very early after reaching the age of maturity, so anything is possible. If you know of family information. Margarite had many brothers and sisters. Her Fathers' name was Abraham and mother, Edith. They came from the Buda, Illinois area and most of the children were born in Chana, Illinois. I have an extensive geneology of the Dowdings. I am married to Patricia (Dowding) Brandon. She is the daughter of Abraham J. Dowding Jr. son of Abraham Dowding son of Charles Dowding (Born in England) son of James son of William from Wales England. Do you her birth date, place of birth, marriages or any other information. I could compare to my files and let you know. Or, you can check on Ancestry.com (mmfwaic1) Dowding and check the lineage yourself. Look forward to hear from you again. Even if you are not directly related to my wife maybe I can steer you in the right direction.

Hello, I think we may be related. My mother was Margarite Dowding. I was born in Texas but not raised by her. There were 8 of us and she left all but Nora and Jerry. I just recently heard that she died. Anyway, we are probably cousins. I just went on computer and saw the Dowding name and you don't see it much in Texas. I met a cousin a few years ago that lived in Las Vegas. She was very nice. Write back if any of this makes sense. Melody

Hi again Tom,

My wife would be very greatful for whatever you would be willing to send. We are willing to reimburse any of your costs. I have pictures of the Myers/Dowding family plots in Michigan, which includes Eliza Jane Myers Dowding and Peter J. Myers. Now that I realize how this service works, I feel a little more comfortable with it and am willing to share with you my current eMail address rather than give you the runaround as I did in a previous response. My active eMail account that I check everyday is kc8mld@lighthouse.net.

We are also able to do a little traveling and would consider making a trip down to see you in person depending upon your location. I have a laptop that I can bring, and large external drive, and a flat bed scanner that I could also bring.

Thankyou so much for responding.

Sincerely as we are:

Marvin L. / Charlene B. Meyers De Witt
Rudyard, MI

Tom,

Yes, my wife is very interested in getting this information. She is the Dowding. Peter Moyer was her Great Great Grandfather and Eliza Jane her Great Grandmother.

I am going to give you the bit of a run around. Please send me an eMail at marv729@netscape.net. From that eMail I will send you one from my everyday eMail address for exchange of information.

This type of correspondance is a bit new to me and I want to be sure that our identity is protected the best that we can. This will also help to filter out any unwanted eMails.

Your consideration would be greatly appreciated.

Thanking you in advance as we are sincerely,

Marv/Charlene De Witt
Rudyard, MI

Hi!

Yes I have quite a bit of information on Rose and her siblings as well as her own family. Her brothers were:
Joseph Jackson, William Curtiss, Arizona, and Montana Myers/Meyers/Moyers.
Joe was born Nov. 13, 1864 in OH and died Jan. 28, 1941 in MI.
William Curtis (Curt) was born Feb 6, 1869 and died Aug. 31, 1950
Arizona (Zone) was born Dec. 7, 1875 in MI and died July 12, 1950 in OH
Montana (Mont) was my grandfather and he was born May 6, 1878 in MI and died Apr. 30, 1942.

I am pretty certain that there was another brother named Simon that died as a toddler. This is info that I've found from census records.

All of these children were born to Peter Jackson Moyer and his wife Catherine Holmes. Peter served in the Civil War in Sherman's Army and fought in several famed battles including the Battle of the Clouds in Chattanooga, TN. (I've been there and it's quite an interesting place).

Peter was one of 4 children born to Joseph Moyer and his wife Jane VanOsdoll. I've traced Jane's family back to Belgium of the 1500s. Joseph was born in 1803 in PA to Abraham and Elizabeth. He died in 1891 in MI.

I have 34 page genealogy on hand of the family of Peter Jackson Moyer and Catherine Holmes that I'd be happy to copy you on. I also have loads of pictures including one great one of Peter that I could scan for you as well (but I'd need some time to dig these all up).
