Hi .. Timothy's Brother, John Downey (b. 1870), was my g-grandfather. He lived in Mt. Morris, which is where my mother grew up. If I'm reading this thread correctly, it looks like they were Downing when living in Ireland. That sounds logical since I've never been able to trace the Downey family in Ireland. As an aside, my mother remembers hearing her grandfather say they came from a town near Skibbereen, County Cork.

I am trying to find the parents/information of a relative named Katherine M. Downey who was born in St. Louis in 1877. Her parents are Dennis and Mary (maiden name unknown) Downey. There are several couples with this name in the census records who had daughters named Katherine and I cannot find out which one she is. The only other information I have on her is that both of her parents immigrated from Ireland and that Katherine was in a convent as a young woman to become a nun and that she fled the convent after she went to the 1904 Worlds Fair and met a man (Edward Mansfield) and fell in love with him and later married him. That is the family story at least. .

Lewis Downey - Ireland to Ontario

I am looking for more information on my husband's 3rd great grandfather, Lewis Downey. He is listed in the 1901 Canadian Census as having been born in Ireland in 1825 and immigrating to Canada in 1831. In birth/marriage records for his children, his wife's name is found listed as Agnes Amelia Jewett/Jewitt/Jenett; she died before the 1901 census as Lewis is listed as widowed. I haven't found Lewis in the 1911 census so I'm assuming he died before then.

Children of Lewis Downey and Agnes Amelia Jewett:
Joseph E. Downey m. Elizabeth F. Dangler
William Albert Downey b.1864 in Canada d.1943 m. Elizabeth Cavanaugh
Agnes Downey b.1871 m. John Malane
Catherine Downey b.1880 m. John Campbell

I have more information on the descendants of William Albert. Please let me know if you recognize this line.

I have found a lot of info on the ancestors of Betty/Bessie Virginia Downey. I do believe they are the same person. She is called Bessie in the 1920 census but is Betty in her birth record and Voter registration records. I have posted what I have found on Rootsweb World Connect in my genealogy file database: burgess_kimes

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

Parents of Katie/Catherine Mae Smith were George W. Smith and Cleopatra/Cleo Powell.

George W. Smith was the son of Samuel Smith and Eliza J. [--?--]. Eliza J. may be Eliza J. Hicks but this is not proved.

Samuel Smith is the son of Arthur Smith and Christiana Snyder/Snider.

All the sources and research info are in my file.

Hi, thanks for posting that. I think we have corresponded before. My Downey family come from the parish of Galloon Co. Fermanagh and I noticed on a few of those ancestors you had them from Leitrim or Femanagh. There are rumours that ours originally came from Leitrim but I've never been able to prove that. Our family names are John, George, James, Edward, William and Henry. It would be interesting to see if there is a link between this family and mine.
Regards Cas

DOWNEY PATRICK, MY GGGRAND-FATHER was PATRICK(1790?) married to Mary Maguire(1790?). Their sons, James(1813-1838) came in 1838 to St-Sylvestre, near Quebec City. He died. His brother Patrick Downey (1813-1885) m. to Mary McCauley(1812-1894) came here in 1842. This Patrick had to obtain a power of attorney to sell his brother's property. A letter was sent to his father Patrick in Kilbarron, Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal in 1844. The answer assures me of their living and location, at the time.
Anyone wishing to contact us for information or early oral tradition is welcome to reach us at: hellewdowney@yahoo.ca
I have a long research to share. I am in touch with descendents of a Patrick Downey from Cashelard/Ballyshannon and Derrykillew.
Very close contact but to be confirmed yet. Thank you for the help, Lewis Downey

Hi, Susan, thanks for writing. The only definitive thing I have is a "Certificate of Vital Record" of my father's birth. It lists Bessie Virginia Downey as his mother. My dad was born April 22, 1925, and lists Bessie's age as 17. I, too cannot locate any confirmation that Bessie and my g'father (Newton Hartland Wyatt) were in fact married, although she stayed with my father until he was around 6 years old. I also can't find indication of divorce. But my skills in genealogy are sadly lacking. Pretty much all other info I have comes from experts such as yourself. I do have a picture of Bessie, and if I can figure out how to get it scanned, I promised to send a copy to Alex.

I did find this: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/s/c/o/Starla-K-Sc... (scroll down to #162) and http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/s/c/o/Starla-K-Sc..., but for all I know maybe you're the one who made these!

If it turns out that my Bessie and Alex's Betty are the same person, you'd be my... second cousin? Cousin once removed? Wow!

I just finished talking with my uncle, Alex Brill, who I believe you have been in contact with regarding his mother, Betty Virginia Downey. I am the genealogy obsessed in my family. It does sound like your father's mother was probably the mother of Alex as well. If she was 17 in 1925 then her birth date is probably 1907 which is the birth date of Alex's mother.

California Birth Index, 1905-1995 about Betty V Downey
Name: Betty V Downey
Birth Date: 7 Oct 1907
Gender: Female
Mother's Maiden Name: Smith
Birth County: Sonoma

Do you know for a fact Hartland Wyatt and Betsey Downey were married? I to have had trouble finding any information on Alexander Brill and his wife Betty Virginia Downey.

Susan Kimes Burgess
suekbee@comcast.net

Joseph Downey/Elizabeth Whitfield

I recently joined Ancestry.Com, and while checking my ancestors lineage, I found 34 entries for my Joseph Downey. These entries had the wife of Joseph listed as Elizabeth Whitfield, b. ca 1766, d. aft 1860, Cherokee Co., AL.

I have never know the maiden name of Elizabeth. I sent a couple of msgs to several individuals to find a paper trail to the maiden name Whitfield, but the return msgs stated that the maiden name came from other trees in Ancestry.

Does anyone have a paper trail to the maiden name of Elizabeth? Is there a family Bible? or other sourced material? I would love to post this info, but I always try to provide a source, or give the credit to an individual who furnished me the info, before I enter the data in my files.

My e-mail address is NKCorum@aol.com

Thanks

Nelindra Ann Corum

I checked the Griffiths Valuation and found only one Murphy (Edmund) in the civil parish of Killeenagarriff (where my folks came from) in County Limerick in that time period of 1847-1864. That was in the townland of Carrowkeel; there were no Minihans in that townland. So I can not find a Murphy connection with my Minihan lineage.

My great great grandmother was Ellen Brigid Minihan who married Mathew Murphy and lived near O'Briens Bridge and Castleconnell Ireland. They came to the US in 1870. I really know nothing about the Minihan family. Have you ran across a connection of Murphy in Ireland. One of the Baptismal sponsors was named Patrick Minihan. Larry

Downey (Male) Family Tree DNA Project

Hello,

My name is Damian Downie and I am the coordinator of the Downey Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) project relating to our surname at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/downey/default.aspx. The FTDNA project is great for those people who have hit a brick wall in tracing their family line.

The FTDNA project now has a number of Downey, Downie, Mcildowney and McEldowney male yDNA. While the sample size is still very small and not statistically significant there are certain trends that are developing but not proven, including a number of families from unique genetic families/backgrounds:

• Downie males from the east coast and borders of Scotland
• Downie males from the west coast of Scotland
• Downey/Downie males from Ireland
• Downey males from Southern Ireland
• Downey, McIldowney and McEldowney males from Ulster
• Downie and Downey males from Ireland and Scotland most probably descended from Vikings.

So, if you family trail has gone cold and you wish to go further back in time the FTDNA project would be perfect for you. If you require information please contact me at damiandowniednaproject@gmail.com.au or go to the Downie surname site for Western Scotland and Northern Ireland at http://downiesurname.yolasite.com/ .

Regards,

Damian Downie
