Brandy, my name is Jim and my mother is a Draper. I have
a book that traces the Draper's to Thomas Draper and Lucy
Coleman. You have to understand that Phillip married 4 times and info is very sketchy. There is a John Draper
and Coleman Draper mentioned amoung other sibleys. But no
mention of there marriages or chidren. The above info
was provided by Mrs. H. M. Wright a granddaughter in 1931.
Maybe this helps a little. Best of luck.

Re: Alton Draper

Alton Draper was my great grandfather who passed away in 1983 in Clearfield,PA His funeral service was held in Philadelphia. He indeed married Letitia White who died in 1929 from whooping cough. They had (3) children together (Alton Jr., Clifford, and Marian) Alton Jr passed away in 1995 and was living in Collingwood NJ. Alton Jr. had 2 children (Buzz and Janet) Buzz died in 1985 as he was hit by a car and the culprit was never caught. Clifford died around the age of 2 from whooping cough. Marian is my grandmother and is still alive in the Clearfield,PA area last check. She is 83 years old. After the passing of his 1st wife Alton Draper then re-married. I only knew this woman as "Nanna" and I believe they had 2 more girls together (Carol & I'm not sure of the 2nd girls name) The 2 younger girls were kept in the dark about Alton's first marriage and this created a riff in the family when they were adults and this info was finally revealed. I have vivid memories of my G-grandfather Alton Sr as he lived with my grandmother Marian in Clearfield when I visited as a child. He had quite the mouth, loved to smoke a pipe, and sip on 6.5 oz of Pabst Blue Ribbon or Rolling Rock. We used to listen to Phillies games on the radio and I believe when the Phils won the World Series in 1980, he could finally find some peace. He loved to play practical jokes and had quite the sense of humor with a foul mouth to boot. Alton was a trolley conductor in Wilmington in the late 20's early 30's and I know his family was from the Caroline,MD area. Altons father was George Fletcher Draper and his mother maiden name was Angie N. Urry. I hope that this info is helpful and let me know if I can provide any further assistance in filling in those family tree branches. I can be reached @ Rromanhero3@verizon.net if further info is needed.

Rich Buchanan

Draper Ancestry

Many years ago my mother who is the great grand dauther
of Ridley Draper, gave me a copy of "Draper
Families in America". Published in 1964 by the Parthenon
Press, Nashville, Tennessee. Compiled by Mrs. Ethel Nichols
Anderson, Mrs. Willie Howard Draper Huddleston, Mrs. Christine Spivey Jones, Mrs. Eleanor Drake Mitchell, and
Mrs. Mildred Draper Summers. This 500 page book can trace
many Drapers and other surname ancestry back to Thomas
Draper, born 1725 who had 11 children. If anyone is interested in my help tracing many surname ancestry
please e-mail me at jlaudereau@aol.com

Remember that no words, names included, had a "correct" spelling before the mid-1800s. Most people didn't know (or, probably, care) how their name was spelled. Clerks wrote down what they heard. So Ingles became Engle over the years.

Do you happen to be kin to the Engles of California--Kern County has a bunch of them--including the late Clair Engle, late US senator.

Jim

I am a decendent of Mary Draper Ingles. The spelling of the last name changes along the line from Ingles to Engle. My great grandmother's madien name was Engle. Her parents were James Elmer Engle and Ethel Emma Price. James Elmer Engle's parents were Fean James Engle and Mary M Stroud. Fean's parents were James Lewis Engle Minerva A Clifton. James' parents were William Ingle and Elizabeth Hall. And William's parents were John Ingles and Margret Crockett. John's parents were William Ingles and Mary Draper.

I'm not sure why the spelling changed though. It would be interesting to find out.

Re: The James Draper Family

James was b. in 1786 in Dutchess Co., NY, to John Draper and his 2nd wife, Elizabeth Lane. James marr. Molenda McCall/McNall in 1808 in St. Andrews, Quebec. They had 9 children, the last 7 b. in East Settlement, QC. After Molenda's death ca. 1830, he remarr. Olive Tucker and had 5 more children, all b. in East Settlement. James d. 1864 in Bowmanville, ON, and is bur. in Bowmanville Cem.

While some of his descendants remained in Ontario or Quebec, others moved on to IL, KS, TX, MI, and Vancouver, BC. The only ones I find moving to Michigan descend through James' son, John (1828-1916). But in 1881, John and family are listed in Wallaceburg, Kent Co., ON. He d. in ON, but is bur. in Detroit's Woodmere Cem. All of his 7 children were b. in ON, mostly in Bowmanville.

At least one child, John Wesley, moved to Detroit. He marr. Louisa Meech and had 2 children before divorcing her and marrying Margaret.

There are other Draper families who migrated to the Detroit area from Canada, NY, and OH, so they may not be closely related.

Lots more detail can be found on my website, the Draper-Tree. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~drapertree

They had a daughter named Margaret, who married George Green. After James' death, America married Robert Rose, and one of their children, a girl, was named Sarah Isabelle Rose, who became my great grandmother.

I do Not know the background of James Ingles, just what I found on a marriage certificate when America, a widow, married widower Robert Rose. It was only when you mentioned that Lillian was True's daughter that the light went on.

Since looking up Farrell "Rusty", Sam C, Bertram, and especially since seeng that Bert's father, the earlier Sam C (for Copeland), came out of New York, I'm more certain than ever that they were not part of our Thomas Draper's family.

The New York Drapers and the New England Drapers are not kin to our Virginia Drapers, who are not kin to other Virginia Drapers or to the Carolina and Georgia Drapers.

Maybe someone else will have a comment on this.

Jim

I was told that Rusty, had wanted Lillian's brother Bill Draper to go on the road with him, when he started out. And that they were cousins. Lillian's father was True Draper, his father was Jesse Lee. I have also , been told that "no" they weren't related at all. So, I am just working on the puzzle and appreciate the names. It gives me somewhere to start looking

If Alford Draper was Farrell's grandfather, and he almost certainly was, then he would have been Lillian's grandfather, too, if she and Farrell were first cousins.

Alford B Draper: his death certificate says Alfred Bertran Draper, born 19 Jan 1875, Adair County, Missouri, died 18 Sep 1953, Kirksville, Adair County, son of Samuel C Draper and Mary Parsons, deceased wife's name Carrie Belle Newman; he was known as Bert and gave info for other death certificates, including Carrie's. He was the Bertrand A Draper, born about 1875, found in Salt River, Adair County, Missouri, in 1880, son of Samuel C Draper, born about 1830, New York, and Mary F Draper, born about 1840, Ohio. The father's name and the location both point to this earlier Samuel C being Farrell "Rusty" Draper's great-grandfather. In addition to Bertrand A (age 5), other children in this family included (in 1880) Lewis C (19), Theron (10), and Mamie A (3).

Theron and Mamie died in Adair County, as did a John D Draper and Emmett L Draper, who may also be related.

Lillian, if a cousin, but not a first cousin, of Rusty, should connect to some of these family members. Or perhaps you can find others in this family whose names ring a bell. If not, she is beyond a second cousin in relationship and I wonder if it is worth pursuing further.

Ferrell H Draper (recorded as Ferold), born about 1923, was recorded in Clay, Adair Co, Missouri, in the 1930 census, the son of Sam C and Della Draper. Ferrell had a sister, Phyllis, born about 1926. S C Draper gave permission for his son Ferrell to marry at age 19 in 1942.
Sam, born about 1900, Missouri, married at 19; Della was born about 1898, Missouri. Both of their fathers were born in Missouri; both of their mothers in Illinois. Sam, in 1930, was a merchant/grocery store.
A Samuel C Draper, born about 1901, was recorded in Salt River, Adair Co, Missouri in 1910. He was the son of Alford B and Carrie S Draper, Alford born in Missouri but Carrie born in Kentucky. Another son in this family, age not legible, was "Feryl" Draper. There was also a daughter Wilma, 7. It is my opinion that this was Sam C's family.

I'm looking for the parent of Rusty Draper who was born 25 January 1923, in Kirksville, Missouri( also found yr listed as 1920) and died 28 March 2003, in Bellevue, Washington. I am trying to find the connection to my mother-in-law, Lillian Draper Morey. Family says he is a cousin, but can't find the connection. Any help will be appreciated.
