Hello Mr. Smith,

I am searching for information related to my great great grandfather Herman C Drexel and his German ancestors. The census and naturalization records indicate he immigrated from Saxony, specifically Leipzig, around 1854. I don't suppose you also have records for the surname Drexel?

Thank you for your time,
Kathy Dickerson
spikad@hotmail.com

Wish we could have stayed longer, as we wanted to research my mother's family which came to the US from Selb in approx 1870-80. We spent most of that time searching for gravestones for my family.

I'll have a look at your yahoo groups page to see if you have any resources which might help me track down relatives in Selb.
Katherine Drexel

I am aware of the Katherine Drexel story and your search. I was not aware that Mother Katherine came to Nebraska and married there. There are a number of Drexel's that settle in Omaha in the Mid to late 1800's. They all seem to be related but I cannot find the exact tie.

There are 2 Fred Drexel's. One come and first settles in Virginia and then moves onto Nebraska and becomes very prominent in the early history of Omaha. He is active in early government and begins a company called Drexel and Foll. They were stone masons. Christian comes next around 1881 and Fred Drexel follows in 1884. On the marriage certificate of the 2nd Fred, the father of the groom is listed as Christian Drexel. I finally have a relative who remembers "Uncle Christ". I can now tie them together as brothers. However,I do not know anything about the "Old" Fred Drexel other than the fact that Fred works for Fred, names his children the same names as the other, and "Old Fred" lists Wurtenburg as his origins.

In all of the census and other research work I have done I have never seen the name Katherine Drexel in the Nebraska files. I have also not seen the name Francis however, I have seen F Drexel noted in Sarpy county Nebraska. Since the part of Doulgas county that Fred lived in is blocks away from Sarpy County I thought that they were referring to Fred or one of his sons.

Let me know how Katherine ended up in Nebraska when I thought she was raised on the eastern side of the USA.

Sandy

Drexel Name

The name Drexel, at least in the Austrian Tyrol, originated as a Roman Name, Draxl, which was a trade name. Other variations of the Drexel name are Drachal, Drachsl, Drechsel. Draxl in the Roman trade was the maker of the parts of the chair that was done on a lathe, the turnings. This information was given to me by an archivist in the Vorarlberg area of the Austrian Tyrol. According to the “Gedenkblaetter der Familie Lorinser” (Commenrative Leaves[pages of history] of the Lorinser Family) by Friedrich Wilhelm Lorinser, Vienna 1868 which traces the Drexel coat of arms far back to old times to a family named Draxl - Drechsel in Tschagguns. The Drexel coat of arms is contained in the collection (1925/36) “Buerger-und Adelswappen Vorarlbergs” (Coat of Arms of Vorarlberg Citizens and Nobility) Part 1, Page 9. by Parson G. W. GUNZ in Tisis.
