Hi my name is Mollie and John O'Driscoll was my maternal grandfather and Hilda my grandmother. They lived in Limerick (Bengal Terrace) after John left the Army. They had ten children in all - Cecilia, Madge, Frank, John, Billy, Michael, Hilda, Kathleen (my mother), Marie. The other son Paddy died from peritonitis when he was a teenager.
This keeps coming to my mailbox even though I am not on the thread. My Patrick died in Ireland prior to 1850. His sons Cornelius (my ancestor) brought his wife Bridget and his brothers Michael and Patrick with him (sisters unknown). They came through Quebec, across Lake Erie to Erie, PA and moved east. This Patrick Driscoll (Driskel, Driscol) lived in Mildred, PA, (wife Anna) had about 10 children and is buried in St. Francis of Assisi Cemetery in Mildred, PA. He was a coal miner.

That is so cool! My grandmother Tessie Gordon, daughter of Catherine Finn, wrote her own family history and story for my sisters and I back in the early 90's when she was declining in health so we would have information on her family and life. My father has it stored somewhere I will have to ask him for it but I remember it having information on Minnie Finn. Most of the information i have is from Chasing Rainbows though. I'll check that and get back to you! By the way my name is Nicole :)

Hi Nice to meet you! Yes i do have the Chasing Rainbows book. That is where i got a LOT of my information from.
My grandmother was Mary (nee Crotty) Ryan, Madeleine's (margaret was her real name) sister. I read the book, it's very fascinating to read about their childhood, and growing up and stuff in Jersey City around that time.
I tried to go back further to see if i can find any more informationa bout Minnie, but i can't find anything. The only thing i know about her, was that she came over here from county cork in steerage around the time of the great potato famine. I can't find out much else, from any of the records in Ireland, I even tried looking up Bridget, I do know aobut Bridget being on the Titanic and surviving, which i also find fascinating!
If you have any other information regarding them or the rest of the family, I would be very interested, and we could compare notes.

I am the great-great grandaughter of Minnie Finn as well, her daughter Catherine was my great grandmother. My father met Bridget as a young child, apparently she lived in Jersey City her whole life. Do you have a copy of Sister Madeleine's book "Chasing Rainbows"? She was the daughter of Mary Ellen Finn (daughter of Minnie) and she documented a good deal of the family history in the first few chapters, you can find it at any library.

If I recall, there was a Catherine Driscoll(or maybe it was Mrs) who came to America on board with a Mrs. Dunn in the 1700's---Dunns were in Pa by the Rev. War, Driscolls were in n. Ky. with them by early 1800's around Carroll co. I had other family there and was contacted early in my research by a Harry Hollingsworth about Fosters or Dunns. It has been a long time ago, but you might check in n. Ky. areas.
Roslyn

There were so many Driscoll and McCarthy links, I am still wading through them. If I come up with something I shall get back to you. Can you find out any info on the London connection? I am attempting to work back to the area in Cork that my John (abt 1832-4) was born in. Also his parents Daniel (1802) and Ann (1804) approx. There is the Irish Genealogy site for parish records you could try, but you may need more info. My ancestors moved during the famine and ended up in the London Dock area, mainly in Rotherhithe, but there were many Driscoll's and a lot of them would have been related.

Seeking information on a Mary Crowley who married a Driscoll. I know Mary was still alive in Feb. 1920 per her brother Robert Crowley's obit. Roberts wife was a Bridget Maloney. Also lists another sister married to a Edward Cooney from West Springfield, Mass. Don't know who Mary's parents are? Any knowledge of this family?

Thanks,
Karen Mahon Forker
forkaren@aol.com
Driscolls of Garranebeg, Caheragh, Cork Ireland 1820's

Hello,

- Wondering if anybody else is researching the family of Dan Driscoll and Margaret Loony. I have no marriage record for them. Their known children were all baptized in Caheragh R.C. Parish:

Patrick (1820), Ellen (1822), Florence (1825), Mary (1827), Daniel (1829), Ellen (1830 - my gg-grandmother), Margaret (1833), James (1835), Johanna (1838 - Joha may be indexed as Tim), Timothy (1842 - may be indexed as John)

(The records are extremely difficult to read around this time.)

The Driscoll children had seven Regan baptism sponsors. I'm still trying to figure out which side of the family the Regans were on.

-- Mary Driscoll married Andrew Maguire also of Garrane, Caheragh. I think they were married in 1846. The children I have found so far were:

Timothy (1853), Patrick (1855), John (1856), Andrew (1858), Jude (1859), Michael (1861), Timothy (1863), Thomas (1865), James (1867), Jeremiah (1870).

-- Johanna Driscoll married Denis McCarthy of Dromore, Caheragh, in Jan 1864. At the moment I cannot find a marriage in the church records, but I have seen it in civil registration, and her father was Dan in Garrane. Denis McC might be a Crimeen. Their known children were:

Jeremiah (1864), Mary (1866), Daniel 1867, Denis 1869, John 1870, Patrick & Margaret (1873), Helena (1875), Julia (1876)

-- Ellen Driscoll married Michael Collins of Lissane Lower, Caheragh in 1854. I have lots of details about the Collins family.

-- Margaret Driscoll married Tim Cadigan of Skibbereen in 1858. They lived at times in Rosnagoose, Drisheen, and eventually Bridgetown Skibbereen. Their known children were Mary (1858), Julia (1861), Ellen (1862), Honora (1865), Margaret (1871), and Julia (1874).

Margaret Loony witnessed the baptisms of Patrick Maguire in 1855, Humphrey Michael Collins in 1858, and Timothy Cadogan also 1858.

I don't know anything about the sons of Dan Driscoll = Margaret Looney! I would be happy to find somebody who knew and even better yet a direct Driscoll descendant cousin! :)

Hi Dan, I have another piece of information that gives her mother as Anna, but I had seen Etta on the census. Also, I have not found Marjorie's obit anywhere in Mass. I've checked a couple of Boston newspapers since they seemed to be the most important papers of that time, but obits are available easily or cheaply. If you know of a way to check Peabody obits, I'd love a hint. Thanks and Happy New Year.

BEv

You asked about , Marjorie J. Driscoll Hayes . The 1910 census shows her ; and her mother is listed as ETTA M. DRISCOLL ; not Anna. If you were able to find Marjorie Hayes death in ( hopefully ) Peabody,Ma you may learn who her parents were....

POLAND –James Francis Driscoll died peacefully Friday evening at his home.

“Jim” was born Nov. 25, 1935, in Brookline (Boston), Mass., the eldest son of James Francis and Anne Katholing Driscoll, both deceased.
In his early years, the family moved to Flossmoore (Chicago), Illinois.

Jim attended Mt. Carmel High School and the University of Notre Dame, graduating in 1957.

Jim married Mary Katherine Meyer on Sept. 12, 1959.
They gave birth to four children before moving to Youngstown, Ohio where they gave birth to two more children.

Jim is survived by his wife and children, James F. Driscoll of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, Culeen (Francis) Carey of Lakewood, Ohio, Julia (Doug) Elmore of Hinsdale, Ill., Patrick T. (Brenda) Driscoll of Denver, Denis “Duffy” (Molly) Driscoll of New Albany and Megan (Stephen) McGrath of Dublin, Ireland.
He is also survived by three brothers, Michael (Susan) Driscoll of Memphis, Tenn., Charles (Barbara) Driscoll of Williamsburg, Va. and Dennis (Gale) Driscoll of Denver.

In his teen years, he distinguished himself as a sportsman and was an outstanding golfer: he had two hole-in-ones, a double eagle and was named Flossmoor Country Club Junior Club Champion. This competitive spirit continued throughout his life. He pursued golf, squash and tennis competitively and taught all of them to his children. He was a “regular” at the YMCA, believing that a daily dose of garlic and exercise would stave off most ailments!

And did Jim like to cook (and eat)! From their early days in Youngstown, he and Mary embraced the ethnic fabric of Youngstown, making recipes given to them by their Lebanese, Italian, and Jewish friends. With their friends, they established the “Galloping Gourmets” dinner club. Many would agree that his best dishes were of his own creation.

Jim loved to learn and he was all about the “experience,” whether through travel, art, or the classroom. He was an avid collector and passed that love onto his children. He involved himself at Butler Institute of American Art and served on the board of Friends of American Art.

Jim was well known for his “green thumb” harvesting more vegetables than his family could consume.

Jim moved his family to Youngstown after a short time in Chicago, where he worked for five years at Commercial Sheering before beginning his career with the Equitable Life Assurance Company.
He was an agent and district manager before retiring in 1995.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Poland Chapel.

Prayers will begin Wednesday 10:30 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Poland Chapel followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 11 a.m. at the Holy Family Church.

In lieu of flowers, tributes may take the form of donations to the Butler Institute of American Art
William was married to Kate (Catherine) around 1860 in Cork and then emigrated to England. They had other children John, Daniel, Kate in Rotherhithe. He had moved to work in the Surrey Docks. I believe Dennis settled in Massachusetts, was married to 'Julia' who may also have been born in Ireland. Trying to find their Irish roots.

I have a County Cork Driscoll/Lynch connection which is tenuous, to put it mildly, but I'll throw it in here in case it rings any bells. Bantry is some distance from Macroom, but they're both in County Cork.

Ellen (Nell) Driscoll was born about 1816 in Ireland. She married Henry Haniford on 25 April 1836 at Kilmichael Parish Church, Macroom, County Cork, Ireland; they lived in Deshure Township, Macroom, Co Cork and had four children that I know of:
Nelly, baptised 11 November 1842 in Kilmichael Parish Church
Thomas, baptised 4 March 1845 in Kilmichael Parish Church
Timothy, baptised 25 March 1848 in Kilmichael Parish Church
Johanna, baptised 11 August 1849 in Kilmichael Parish Church.

Timothy Haniford went to America and I couldn't tell you what happened to him there.

Henry and Nell took Thomas and Johanna to England -- specifically to Gravesend in Kent.

While this was going on, John Lynch and his wife Margaret, maiden name unknown, also went from Macroom to England -- in their case, to Highgate, London with their son Thomas (born about 1851 and possibly their daughter Eliza, born about 1852.

Johanna Haniford and Thomas Lynch were in their early teens when they moved to England, but I have to assume the families knew each other because on 5 June 1877 they married at St John's Roman Catholic Chapel, Gravesend, Kent, England. Immediately after the marriage, they went to Highgate, London to live. They had six children:
Ellen, born 7 December 1878 at 10, Alexandra Terrace, Islington, London
John, born 2 November 1880 at 10, Alexandra Terrace, Islington, London
Thomas, born 13 November 1881 at 10, Alexandra Terrace, Islington, London
Margaret, born 17 June 1883 at 31, Duncombe Road, Islington, London
Henry, born 31 January 1887 at 4 Calverley Grove, Islington, London
Jane, born 2 August 1888 at 28, Vorley Road, Islington, London

John was my great grandfather.

If anyone sees a link here, please contact me.

John Lynch

I have a William born in Cork 1841 married a Catherine, but a son who goes by the name of Dennis b 1862 (but could be William) was recorded as being born in 'Bantyre', which is probably Bantry. He went to America around the 1880's and settled in Massachusetts after being in Rotherhithe, London area from the late 1860's. His sister Hannah 1867, was my Great Grandmother and there were siblings Daniel,,John, Kate, Ellen. Trying to make connections.

Re: Update on Bridget Driscoll Harris - Kerry, Ireland

I have new information on Bridget O'Driscoll Harris, born abt 1847, and her three daughters from Derrymore West, Kerry. Bridget took the two youngest daughters, Mary and Bridget, to America in Sept 1883. That leads me to believe her husband, Love Harris, died earlier that year. We don't know what happened to the oldest girl, Margaret Harris, born 1865, but Mary Harris got married in Springfield, Ohio, in 1884. Other Harris relatives had connections with Springfield, so that may be why Mary ended up there. Still searching for further info on the mother, Bridget O'Driscoll Harris and the youngest daughter, Bridget Harris, born abt 1869. The loss of the 1890 U.S. Census leaves a big gap in the records.

Mary O'Donnell Mulcahy

I am trying to track my G.Grandmother's Kin. Her name was Johanna and she was living in Rotherhithe, Surrey around the early 1900's. Her father was William, born 1841, possibly in this area. There is a William recorded for that year, who's mother was Johanna(Regan) and father Daniel, and they were recorded on Parish records for this area as living at Currihy (Curriheven?). Daniel and Johanna also had a Dennis (1843) and probably others, but hard to be sure. Names such as Honora, Jas, John, Cors,Catherine (1837)are recorded as witnesses on various parish records. Can anyone assist me?

Re: Dennis Driscoll - Skull, County Cork > Norwich, CT

My gggrandparents, John and Mary (Haes ?sp Hayes) McCarthy, lived in Skull and their son, Jeremiah, born 1836, had a Timothy Driscoll and a Mary Daly for Baptismal sponsors. I wonder if this Timothy Driscoll could be the son of your Dennis and Ellen.
Jeremiah came to the US about 1852 or 1854 with a brother Daniel. He came through the port of NY and settle in Boston.
I was in Skull two years ago and went through the old cemetery to try and find John and Mary McCarthy's grave but I had no luck as many of the stones are unreadable.
I was able to see my gggrandfather's Baptismal record in St. Mary's Church. I also took some notes on other family's because I thought they might help me in my search. Maybe this will help you. I found a Michael, son of Denis McCarthy and Mary Driscoll, sponsors were Michael McCarthy and Ellen Minahane, born June 28, 1834.
Hope this helps you.
