Just received a very interesting email from Thomas Driver a direct descendant of John Driver a son of Giles Driver IV. His recent Y-DNA test result shows him a member of haplogroup I1. Mine is R1b with subclade L21. We are definitely not related. My fifth great grandfather was Shaw Driver Sr. from Franklin County, NC. Thomas and I had hoped the test would connect our lines. Now I have more questions than before and much more work to do to discover where my Driver's came from.

I think that there was more than one connection to native Americans. I was told several times when growing up that there is Indian blood in the Driver family. I have information on one such marriage. Benjamin Driver ca. 1788, NC -d ca. 1860 TN was the first Driver to come to TN. His wife Nancy Avon was of Cherokke descent.

Dorcas

I have also part of the Virginia line of Drivers and have recently received my Y-DNA results. It places our line in the I grouping. It appears that additional test results are pending to identify the subgroups under this grouping. According to part of the Haplogroup I (Y-DNA). For more information in this grouping, visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haplogroup_I_%28Y-DNA%29

If your ancestors were English, then the origin of the Drivers is from Benselin De Dive from the town of Dive in Normandy France, a knight who came over with the conqueror. We have Battle rolls in England and Companion to the Conqueror rolls. The Drivers being Norman were part Scandinavian and part French. Normans - Northmen. The male Drivers have blue eyes in my family not brown. Some Victorian Driver wrote down the history and from an English history point of view it is very interesting. They were lords of the manor in Leicrster Gloustershire and Northampton and Norfolk.

There are at least two Canadian Drivers male maybe three that married native American wives. If you can access Ancestry and look under male female Drivers living in Canada in the 19th century. I just mentioned it in my ancestry but took no details. My G Uncle who was one of my late Fathers' brothers who fought in a canadian regiment in the first world war and joined the RCMP afterwards. He married a French Canadian lady. Thats how I came across the info about the native American ladies.

Have you gotten the information you were looking for? On a Memorial site it has John Thomas Driver b. 1857 Henry Co. GA d. Sept. 21,1924 Clayton Co. Ga m. Arminita Frances Scott Driver 1873-1917. On the 1910 census record that I saw at another site shows him to be 36 in that year. He would be older if born in 1857.

In Smith Co., TN during the 1830 census there are several Driver men listed so I don't know which one could possibly be Jacob's father.

Also, if Nancy Doss was Abe's first wife she must not have lived long cause he married Louisa when she was around 17 and he was around 27. Did Abe and Nancy Doss have any children? What would be your source on this? I have seen if on several sites but haven't found anything to prove it.

Abe is my ggg grandfather.

The Giles I am investigating is Giles Driver V, the son of Giles Driver IV and Olive Wright. There is information on him located at the Library of Virginia of which I am going to acquire copies. If he turns out to be a dead end then I will look elsewhere. The father of Shaw Sr. knew and interacted with the Driver's living in Nash, and Johnston Counties, of this I have no doubt. Since there were several Driver's from Virginia who owned land in North Carolina and traveled between the two colonies I have no doubt my Giles was one of them. I will keep you informed.

My line of Driver's is traceable to Giles Driver of 1757 Granville County, NC. I have had my Y-DNA tested through Genebase. If there are any male Driver's having connections to North Carolina or Virginia, I am very interested in comparing DNA results. Paper trails are great but DNA gets right down to the truth. Contact me if you are interested so we can post the results here on Ancestry.com.

Father of Shaw Driver Sr.

Page 54 of North Carolina Taxpayers 1679-1790 there is an entry under Driver which reads "Giles and s Shaw". The remainder of this book shows entries which prove this small "s" to be an abbreviation for the word Son. This entry for Giles and son Shaw was taken from tax records for Bute County, NC for the year 1766. In my mind there is no more proof needed on the question as to who was the father of Shaw Driver Sr.

I am searching for information on these families in Pennsylvania. My great grandfather, Roy Lewis Beatty was a child of Susannah Beatty who married Edward Wasson. In his memorial book, it has several names from the Wasson, Driver families. I also have a few notes in my grandmas address book about a few cousins. I have some pictures that I can't identify, and I believe they may be from one of these families. I have a picture that reads, "for the Beatty's birthday part, from Bobby Marshall"

A tale of Two Robert Drivers from Beer, Devon, England

I've been researching my Driver ancestors for a number of years now, and like many other 'Driver' delvers, I've made an assumption about one of my forebears which I've now discovered to be wrong! However, now that I've unravelled what I think are the correct relationships I'm left with a new conundrum, so I wonder if any other 'Driver' researchers out there might be able to help me....

It goes like this. There are two Robert Drivers in my tree, both born in 1817 or 1818. One moved to London, the other spent his life in Beer. If you look at my public 'Driver' family tree you'll find them identified as Robert (1.1) and Robert (2.1).

Most research that I've seen favours the opinion that Robert (2.1) is the son of another Robert Driver [Robert (1.0) in my tree]. Robert (2.1) is the guy who moved to London - he died in 1877.

However, I recently found two baptism records on IGI, both for Robert Driver. One happened in 1817 and the other in 1818. The 1817 Robert was the child of William and Susannah, the 1818 Robert was the child of Robert and Maria.

Now fast-forward to the 1881 census records for Beer (I'm missing out a lot of trivia here) and we find Robert Driver's widow, Louisa, who has a Robert Driver born in 1791 listed as her father-in-law. That matches Robert (1.0) in my tree which means the 1818 baptism must be Robert (1.1), because he married Louisa. Robert (1.1) died in 1866. With me so far?

OK, so that means the Robert baptised in 1817 must be Robert (2.1) who moved to London. So his parents must be William and Susannah. Still with me?

Robert (1.0) begat Robert (1.1) who married Louisa and spent all his life in Beer

William begat Robert (2.1) who moved to London and married Matilda.

Perfick - except that according to FreeBMD, and confirmed by several census entries, in 1831 Robert (1.0) begat ANOTHER Robert [Robert (1.2) in my tree]. So how do you explain that then? TWO sons named Robert?

Answers here please, rather than on a postcard!

Rod Shipley

I do have a little bit of my grandmothers family tree mostly from her side, but, thats all I know at this point and I have been searching myself for more information. I hope this helps .

Sincerely,
Dan Driver
