Margaret A (DRUM) (ROOT) SPENCER, Daughter of Capt. Thomas DRUM

MARGARET A. SPENCER.
46th Congress 2d Session
House of Representatives
Report No. 859

Mr. Whiteaker, from the Committee on Pensions, submitted the following
REPORT:
[To accompany hill H. R. 428.]

The Committee on Revolutionary Pensions and War of 1812, to whom was referred the bill (H. R. 428) granting a pension to Margaret A. Spencer, widow of Chester Root, captain of the Third Regiment of Artillery, United States Army, war of 1812, having had the same under consideration, respectfully submit the following report:

It is in evidence from information obtained from the office of the Adjutant-General, United States Army, that the said Chester Root was confirmed by the Senate as second lieutenant Third Artillery, April 25,1812: that be was commissioned as such to rank from July 6, 1812, and promoted first lieutenant March 13, 1813, and that he was retained in the reorganization of 1815 as first lieutenant Corps of Artillery, with rank from March 13, 1813; promoted captain March 5, 1819, and disbanded in June, 1821.

As the widow of said officer, which fact is established by competent testimony, she would, under existing laws of the United States, be entitled to a pension. But it is also in evidence that after the death of the said Chester Root, which occurred at Mobile, Ala., in the year 1854, she was again married, to wit, on or about the 3d day of October, 1855, to Richard Spencer, formerly a member of Congress from the State of Maryland.

It is in evidence from the affidavit of the claimant that upon the death of her second husband, Richard Spencer, which occurred in the year 1868, she was left in very dependent circumstances, and is now aged, infirm, childless, and without means of support.

It is also in evidence, from the affidavit of Hon. Patrick Byrns, who was probate judge of Baldwin County, Alabama, from the year 1822 to 1855, that she is the daughter of Capt. Thomas Drum, with whom he states he was personally acquainted, who was massacred by the Indians, at Fort Mims, in the "Creek Indian war," while serving in the line of his duty as an officer of volunteers United States Army. Also that the said Thomas Drum was possessed of considerable wealth in horses, sheep, and cattle, valued at several thousands of dollars, which, together with all of the buildings of his farm, were destroyed during the said Indian war, and for which his heirs have received no compensation.

While on general principles the committee are opposed to legislation of this character, as tending to unduly enlarge and increase the pension list, yet, in view of the foregoing facts, of the long service of her first husband, the loss of her father in the Indian war while in the military service of the United States, and the destruction of his entire fortune in said war, for which no remuneration has ever been granted by the government to his heirs, and, also, in view of her age, infirmity, and destitute condition, the committee are of the opinion that she is entitled to relief, and therefore return the bill to the House, and recommend the passage of the same with an amendment.

Book: Index to the Reports of Committees of the House of Representatives for the First and Second Sessions of the Forty-Sixth Congress (Google eBook); James Aarons; Page 1- 2
Thanks Dan I will take a look. I also have "Drum Family Tree" I do not know how to invite you to the tree, but it is public so I assume you can get to it.

I have been tracking mostly from my group of Drums which originated with Johann Drum & his son Philip Drum both from NC. Philip I believe may be the father of your Cyrus. If that is true there is some information in my tree you may want to look at. I believe Cyrus had among others brothers named Thomas and Hiram, may have had different mothers. Take a look. If you uncover any information about Thomas or Hiram I would be interested. Thanks again!

Dear Dan,

I have just invited you to my family tree "Drum-Moser". You may find some of the information useful. I haven't fully researched it all so check it yourself to insure accuracy. When I first joined Ancestry I was like a drunken sailor, clicking on anything and everything as if it were all true. Made a mistake on Nancy Davis Drum and ended up with pirates and a greek slave girl, all wrong! So be careful.... If you have any information on Nancy Davis Drum (wife of Cyrus) I'd love to know about her family. To share your family with me you just go to your family tree "Drum Roots" then click on tree pages. It will have a drop down menu and select share your tree, then select username (threed3d) and invite me. Deb

I am a descendant of their son, Adolphus Drum> Charles Edward Drum Sr> C.E.(Charlie)Drum, Jr> Deborah Drum Davidson (me). I would appreciate any information that you have especially on Nancy Davis (wife of Cyrus).
Sorry, I can't help you with any earlier Drums. As I said, Elnora was my mother's caretaker when she was a child in Ashley, PA. Elnora was the landlady to my mother's grandparents and lived next door to them on Hartford St. Being a spinster lady, she agreed to board my mother there while my grandmother, who was divorced, moved to upstate NY to find work. My great grandparents house became overcrowded when my grandmother's sister became widowed at the age of 31 with 5 children, so my mother was "jettisoned" out to the landlady. However, my mother was familiar with all of Miss Drum's family.

His son, Jacob, born 1730 in Germany probably immigrated with him and was killed by Indians 1774, wf Catherine Strauss being kidnapped & never heard from again.
Mae DRUM m Harry KIMBALL, widowed in 1920

I'm looking for information about May Drum who married Harry Kimball in abt. 1904-5. She had a daughter, Elizabeth Nestling b. 1904. Together they had a daughter, Pearl Kimball born abt.1907. In 1910 Mae is living with Harry in Clay, AR. in 1920 she is back in Northumberland washing clothes for work with both children, Harry is still in Arkansas and died in late 1920. Elizabeth Nestling is born in PA and Pearl was born in Ohio according to both census records and family rumor is that Pearl married a Zimmerman and moved towards Harrisburg. The Kimball/Kimble family was originally from Northumberland County via Hunterdon NJ. with Harry changing the spelling from Kimble to Kimball. His first marriage was to Laura Wilson in Hamilton Co, Indiana. He has a wanderlust and moved around a great deal. The family story is after he was living with his son in Arkansas for a bit he traveled back up to Pennsylvania, met and married May (Mae) and brought her and step daughter and daughter back down to Arkansas. Mae didn't stay long headed back north. I assume that May was from the Northumberland area. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking for more information on his side. My father's mother was his mother's sister. We have more info. on the Novacks that I have dug up this past year. For years my father knew very little about his parents - he was raised by an aunt from age 8 on, his mom died when he was 3.
