Re: John Stephen Duchman lived in Pennsylvanina 1775

The original Johann Stephan was from Gundershoffen, in Alsace, and emigrated to America as a single man in 1767. His ancestry can be traced back into the late 1500s in several lines, and his family shares part of the ancestry of Dr Albert Schweitzer. He was the son of Joh Jacob Duchmann, citizen and farmer (1707-1782) and his first wife, Anna Maria Teutsch (1712-c1756), and the grandson of Hans Peter Duchmann (1663-1722), innkeeper and Stabhalter at GH, and his wife Anna Dorothea Dameron (1680-1751). The Dameron are interesting, as they descend from a leftover English mercenary soldier of the 30 Years War who stayed in the region after the war.

It seems reasonably certain that Mettler, the family of his wife, was also from Gundershoffen. Joh Georg Mettler, born 1725 at GH (the bp record does not include his name), married there in 1750, to Maria Elisabeth Becht (from Zinswiller) and disappears afterward. There is a PA arrival record in the name of a Joh Georg Mettler, and the mark is similar to that which Georg Mettler made on his marriage record. These Mettler trace back to a late 17th century immigrant from Blumenstein, in Kanton Bern.

In May 1767 Stephan Duchmann was named as the father of an illegitimate child born to Magdalena Reymann, from Schirlenhoff (a farming estate near Gundershoffen). He had no doubt already started on his way to America by then. The mother died a few days after the child's birth, and the infant about five months later.

I found out who the Duchmann's were! Bridget's daughter , Henrietta Harriet, married John J. Duchmann. So, Mrs. J. J. Duchmann is Henrietta Harriet. Alma is the a daughter of Henrietta and John. I'm still trying to figure out who Clarence is. From what I've found so far, Clarence is not a son of Henrietta and John.

If the name sound familiar, please email me
sixrwe@charter.net

Duchmann in New Orleans, LA

I've just begun to research my families history and found some Duchmann burried in a Conner tomb in New Orleans. The tomb is for the Conner family, but has two Duchmann interred. They are

Mrs. J. J. Duchmann burried 11 AUG 1911

Alma Duchmann burried 18 JAN 1914

Clarence Duchmann burried 21 FEB 1934

I do not know how or if they are related. The tomb was purchased by Mrs. Widow Richard Conner in 1893. I think her name was Bridget Mullins Conner.

Any help would be appreciated.

sixrwe@cox.net

Hans Peter Duchmann's first wife was Anna Barbara Gortner. They were married on January 14, 1727 in Gundershoffen, and she died about 1743. Their children, as far as I've been told, were:

Johann Wilhelm (b. 1727)
Catharina Dorothea
Barbara (b. 1733)
Anna Margaretha (b. 1735)
Peter (b. 1738)
Maria Salome (b. 1739) m. William Nagel/Nail (these are my ancestors)
Hans Peter (b. 1741)

Anna Barbara Gortner's parents were Christian Gortner and Anna Barbara Sutter, m. February 19, 1697 in Gundershoffen. Christian's father was Hans Gortner; Anna's father was Hans Sutter.

Maria Salome Duchmann married William Nagel/Nail on June 12, 1759 in Philadelphia. They settled in Shenandoah (now Page) Co., Virginia.

Hi,

DUCHMANN Jean Georges, b 26 Jun 1794 at Gundershoffen, Bas-Rhin, son of DUCHMANN Hans Georg (1769-bef 1802) and DUCHMANN Maria Salome (1765-1823). Married there, 11 Oct 1813, to

DUCHMANN Marguerite Elisabeth, b 15 Nov 1796, dau of DUCHMANN Johann Stephan (b 1775; sergeant in the French Revolutionary army) and DUCHMANN Maria Magdalena (b 1772).

I haven't yet researched this family in the births at Gundershoffen but it appears to be the same you are looking for. I have 6 children, born at Gundershoffen, though I don't have a Frederic, b 1834 (I have the others you name, incl Madeleine, b 1836). All of these children are listed in the IGI. My note just says "none of Jean Georges' children in the GH mariages." I had supposed they moved away but did not know to where, nor did I have any idea who were the DUCHMANN in New Orleans,so this is very nice to know!

Please contact me directly if you'd like further info; I have a good bit more on this group of families though nothing else on this particular line of descendants.

Best,
Rick Toothman

My family (TOOTHMAN in America and DUCHMANN in Europe) are from Niedermodern, Bas-Rhin, and have been there since about 1576. However, they do not appear to be native to that region and there is at least a suggestion that they came from Franconia, although it is not explicitly said so.

I would be most interested in knowing more about the DUCHMANN in Florsheim and whether my family in Niedermodern (from whom all, it seems, of the Alsatian DUCHMANN are descended) might be a stray family of the same clan. Please e-mail me ( my address is rduchmann@yahoo.com).
Hi Wilelm. my gggggrandfather was Johannes Diederich Duchmann. Somewhere along the line our last name was changed to Toothman. I'm not sure yet, but I believe his father's name was Johannes Adam Duchmann. They lived in Alsace-Lorraine France, then in 1749 Johannes Dederich came to America, where he married Anna Maria Husser. All Toothman's come from Christman Duchmann. Do you have Johann Adam in your line? I think my line originally came from Germany, then went France, but of that I'm not sure. Thank you, Debi

Duchmann's

I was born in Boston, MA. My father was
Gereald Joseph Duchmann, JR. He was born
and raised in New Orleans. My Grandfather
was Gerald Joseph Duchmann. We called his
mother Granny and her husband Papa. I was
really young, but I remember them having
little dogs in the house. I was wondering
if there are any people out there that might
be related. I am now 28 and am living in
California with my two daughters.
