I'm looking for any information on a Betty Duffield from New Jersey. I have very little information.

She was my grandmothers birth mother. I believe she was born in the mid 1920s as my grandmother was born in 1946. Betty left her in Bridgeton hospital in Bridgeton, NJ (Cumberland county). Around 1946, Betty lived in Cohansey, NJ. She may have had a relationship with a Harry Bennett around 1945 also.

If anyone has any information, i'd greatly appreciate it. Sorry i don't have more info on her.

There is now available a 20 page index to the booklet "The Duffield Family: Sketch of William Duffield of Venango County, PA", 75 pages, published in 1905 and previously unindexed.

If you would like a copy emailed, please contact me at pwrand (at) gmail.com. If you would like a printed, bound copy mailed to you, the cost will be $32.00.

I have used this booklet for many years, and have always been frustrated that there was no index. I index regularly for libraries and historical societies, and took on this book to make things easier for myself. It is 20 pages, double-sided, two columns. It lists Duffield descendants, with maiden and married names of women, all spouses and their parents if given.

I am a descendant of William's son John. Please contact me if you would like to exchange information.

Hi Charles.

I made my posting many months ago and had dispaired of ever getting a response, so it is really good to hear from you.

Charles was my Great Uncle, but he died long before I was born, but I do remember (just) my Great Grandfather TWG , or Little Grandpa as he was known.

I have lots more information on his adventurous life and a pair of non prismatic binoculars presented to him by the President of USA for his part in a rescue of US sailors.

If you can find the Wilson Line book there is a photo of him with his Italian order and the binoculars.

If you can find the book and scan that photo and others of him in there I'd appreciate it. I have seen, but do not have a copy.

Your Great Grandfather's obitury is in a scrapbook that TWG kept and has pencilled comments on the side by him.

The mystery is Cd's involvement in the 'sinking ' of the first German U Boat in WW1 and the consequent award of 'Pearsons Prize', upon which I have so far only come up with conflicting records on the first and a blank on the second.

Any help you can give would be good.

If you send an email address I will send you the obit. Eventually we may be able to exchange more records.

Thanks for the contact.

M John Reynolds

I'd be very keen to have a copy of Capt Charles Duffill's obituary.

I am also "Charles Duffill" (born 1940), a grandson of his, my father being yet another Charles Duffill (1911-1964)... My father's Uncle Thomas (TWG Duffill) was a legendary figure in our family mythology - see my post of 2008 - but I never met him.

The only memento of my grandfather which I have is his Great War service medal. My cousin John Charles Manchester has several documents, including his WW1 Commission. Apart from that, I have no knowledge whatever.

He is married and living in McHenry County IL in 1860 and then moves his family to Chariton County MO.

I found a Josiah Duffield(b. abt 1799) living in Gloucester in the 1830, 1840, and 1850 census records. He has a son that could be the Josiah I am looking for. Just wondering if anyone has information on this family and can tell me if Josiah (b. 1830) married an Ellen Beam from NY.

Duffields were Quakers who came to Philadelphia and were there at the time of Penn

The original Quaker burying ground was underneath what is now Penn Station. It was originally the Duffield farm. Gloucester Co Duffields are probaby closely related as many Quakers had businesses in Philadellphia and commuted back to their peaceful country abodes in Gloucester Co- in winter they could take an ice ferry over the frozen river, and other times they could take small sailing skiffs or canal boats which were made by the Morgan family, for one.

Edward S Duffield shows in the 1850 PA census. He would have been about 23 years old at the time and his mother's name was Margaret (Glass or Dyke) Duffield--prior to her marrying into the Duffields she was married to an Adam Seits(z)--his fathers name was George Duffield. From what I have found of Margaret she was born in PA and so was George. Edward S Duffield would have been my great-great-great grandfather. The middle name of Milton shows in my family line in my great-great grandfather's name which was James Milton Duffield, then in one of my great uncles John Milton. I don't know whether this information is of any help at all but that is what I have to share with you!

I have seen references to a Benjamin Duffield from Bourbon County, KY who was the son of a Robert Duffield on the internet who married an Elizabeth Shock in 1791 and moved to Illinois. I have also seen a reference to this same Benjamin, son of Robert, who married Susannah Wilson. Elizabeth (Shock) Duffield was supposedly still alive after 1832 when he died.

This Benjamin Duffield married Susannah Wilson on 15 Oct 1798 in Bourbon County so they can't be the same one unless someone has confused the two in some way. He was involved with my Edward Wilson and his brother William Wilson.

I am interested because I feel that Susannah Wilson was related to "my" Wilsons, descendants of John and Jane/Jean (__) Wilson of Berkeley Co., VA(now WV). John in 1783 and left a will naming 14 children most of whom moved in Kentucky and then later spread out to Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, etc.

Edward Wilson, William Wilson and Benjamin Duffield were witnesses to George Naylor's will in Montgomery County, Kentucky (Mt Sterling). All three lived in Clark County, Kentucky (adjoining county). Edward and William were brothers. Edward had a daughter named Susannah but she was married to George Bath/Beethe. William (at least according to his will) did not have a daughter named Susannah. Edward and William did have seven other brothers - James, John, Thomas, Jacob, Jeremiah, Daniel and Isaac Wilson. Was she the daughter of one of them?

What was George Naylor's relationship to the Wilsons?

Montgomery County, Kentucky Will Book A (1796-1821)
Written 25 March 1805 Probated 6 May 1805

Will of George Nailer
In the name of God, Amen. I, George Nailer, of Montomery County and commonwealth of Kentucky, being sick and weak of body, but of sound and perfect mind and memory, thanks be given unto God and called to mind the mortality of my body and that it is appointed for all men once to die, I do constitute and appoint this to be my last will and estament in manner and form as follows:

First and principally I dedicate my soul to God and my body to the dust to be buried in a decent and Christian manner not doubting but I shall receive the form again by the mighty power of God and as for what worldly goods, it has pleased God to help me with in this life, I will and dispose of in manner and form as follows:

It is my will and desire that all my just debts and funeral charges be first paid. I will and bequeath to my beloved wife all my household furniture and stock during her life and not to make way with any part to any one child more to one than another as it is my desire that my two daughters Rebeckah Poor and Mary Lynch shall get all my invoicable Estate after the decease of my wife. I will and bequeath to my two sons, Samuel and Paul Nailer, two hundred and fifty acres of land, the division of the land to be as follows; beginning as follows, beginning at the mouth of Paul's Spring branch where it empties into a small crick from thence a straight line to a large walnut standing by the side of a fence thence west to the line of the deed all the land on the South side of the afore mentioned creck to belong to Samuel Nailer, that on the north to belong my son, Paul. One horse to be excepted (?) a sorrel horse to be taken out of my stock after the decease of my wife to beling equally to my two sons. I do hereby revoke and disannul all former wills made by me ratifying and confirming this to be my last will and testament. In
witness whereof I have hearewith set my hand and seal this twenty fifth day of March One thousand eight hundred and five.

Signed sealed & delivered George Naylor (Seal)
in the presence of us who signs in the presence of each other -
EDWARD WILSON
BENJAMIN DUFFIELD
WILLIAM WILSON
---------------------------
EDWARD WILSON vs. JOHN HUME
Box 28, 1801 and Box 207 1819
Kentucky State Archives, Frankfort, KY
“Clark County, Kentucky to Wit:……………………………......
“The Commonwealth of Kentucky to the Sheriff of Clark, Greeting. We command you to summon HENRY INLOWS, BENJAMIN DUFFIELD, and JOHN WILSON to appear before the Justices of Court of Quarter Sessions at the Court House on the 4th Tuesday in this month to testify and the truth to say in behalf of EDWARD WILSON in a certain matter of controversy in our said court depending and undetermined between sd WILSON pltff, and John Hume, Deft. And this they shall in no wise omit under the penalty of 100 lbs And have then there this writ witness David Bullock, Clerk of our said Court this 15th day of June 1799 and 8th year of the Commonwealth.
Signed: D. Bullock”
Memo: This is an action in the case for an injury done by the Deft to the Pltf in obstructing a stream running through his land whereby his mill spring and c are overflowed.
Exd James D. Sudduth
Bledsoe for Pltf
DS for Collins

Any help with Benjamin Duffield and Susannah Wilson appreciated.

UPDATE 4-16-2011: I just discovered the marriage bond of Susannah Wilson and Benjamin Duffield in Bourbon County, Kentucky as follows:

Marriage bond for Susannah Wilson to Benjamin Duffield dated 5 Sept 1797 in Bourbon County, KY. Bondsman was Robert Duffield. Cosent of Jeremiah Wilson given 6 Sept 1797 for the marriage of “Mr. Benj. Duffield and my daughter Susannah Wilson”. Attest: Abraham Duffield, Robert Grant. Marriage date not given. Rec’d in 1798 1st BC Marriage Register, p. 36.

So this answers part of my question at least. Susannah Wilson was the daughter of Jeremiah Wilson. Edward Wilson had a brother Jeremiah and a son Jeremiah. It seems likely that this Jeremiah would have been Edward's brother, and thus Susannah (Wilson) Duffield would have been a niece. However, depending on ages, it could also be that Jeremiah was the one who was the son of Edward making her Edward's granddaughter. Will keep digging to figure out which one.

I have a Mary Jane Duffield born April 1, 1849 and married a James Murphy. They lived in Saltzburg, Indiana County PA and were married in the 1863 timeframe. Does this Edward Duffield show on any census for 1850? The Duffields of this area are quite elusive. Mary Jane should show on an 1850 1860 census somewhere! Mary Jane and James Murphy are burried in Union Cemetary in New Alexandria. It's wierd to see that "Milton" middle name in this line, because I have Kelly's from that area and I have a Charles Milton Kelly whose descendent marrys into the Murphy line. Edwards son's are listed in this thread but who knows abaout his daughters and where abouts prior to him moving to Ohio?

A family document showed Simon Duffield m. 1st Jane Bell and had Huston b. 1803 Franklin County, PA (or out of wedlock) before he had sons, Pharez & Arthur with 2nd wife, Jane Charitan.

I need proof that Simon was Huston's father. Huston moved to Preble, Ohio, same as Arthur.

What I have been unable to find out is how they are brothers as my research only shows Thomas as having John H and George as brothers.

Thomas did not emigrate, he died in Clerkenwell in 1950.
He may well have been at sea when the censuses were made, and his wife else where with family.

I have a vauge memory of seeing him at my grandparents house in Taunton Somerset when I was about 4 years old!

His daughter Lilly Sanderson Duffill married Gordon Reynolds, they were my grandparents on my Fathers side.
I (and my brother)have quite a collection of memorabilia for TWG D

Nicole,
Here is everything that I can tell you concerning Edward S. Duffield, George Duffield, and Margaret (Dyke or Glass).

Edward was born in 1827 in Indiana County, Pennsylvania.
I have heard that he died in Wiener, Arkansas in 1910. However, Arkansas death records only go back to 1914, so I could not find a death certificate. I went to Weiner, Arkansas and found James Milton Duffield's and Mary Melissa Thomas Duffield's graves, but no grave for Edward S. Duffield. There were some unmarked graves so it is possible that he is there, but I have no proof.
Edward was the son of George and Margaret Duffield proven by the 1850 Federal Census of Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. George was born in Pennsylvania in about 1795. He is living in Indiana County, Pennsylvania before the 1830 Federal Census. he married Margaret, a widow, before 1827 peoven in Probate Records for Indiana County, PA relating to the estate of Adam Sides (Sietz), who died in 1822. The record mentions that Margaret Sides is now Mrs. Duffield. Margaret and George only have one known child, Edward. However, Margaret and Adam Sides had atleast 4 children.
Margaret was born in 1792 in Pennsylvania and died after 1860, as she appears living with edward in the 1860 Census of Westmoreland County, PA. George must have died before 1860.
In 1861, the family moves to Ohio. Edward's first wife Barbara Swab (married 1850) died before 1859. His second wife, Barbara Weygandt, is the mother of Daniel Sirventhune Duffield, born before the 1860 Census.
Back to George, as mentioned George is living in Indiana County, Pennsylvania before 1830. I have found 2 other Duffield's, who lived there at the same time.
the first is Dr. Samuel Duffield who died in 1828. In the 1830 census there is a Samuel Duffield, who I believe to be the son of Dr. Samuel Duffield. It is possible that George is another son of Dr. Samuel Duffield. However, I have not proven this and at this point it is pure speculation.

hope this gives you a starting point,
mike

I cannot seem to get any further information on George Duffield and Margaret Glass (Dyke). It's like a wall!

Have you found anything as of recent?! I have been in contact with some people in Pennsylvania and I am hoping they can shed some light for me.

Hope to hear from you!!

She was the widow of Adam Sides (Sietz). She had 3 or 4 children with Adam Sides (d. 1822). She married George about 1826. Their only child was Edward Sirventhune Duffield.

2nd Generation
Edward Sirventhune Duffield b 1827 in PA. Died abt 1910 in AR. Married (1850) first Barbara Swab (d. before 1860).
Children James Milton, Thomas Alven, George William, and John C.
Edward married (1860) Barbara Weygandt(d. abt 1872).
Children Daniel Sirventhune, Edward Macetus, Charles Henry, Mary Margaret.
Edward married Lydia Kistler
One child Morris Sylvester.
Edward's last wife was Margaret S. Davis.
No children.
Edward went to Arkansas with James Milton and is said to have died there. I have located James Milton's grave but never Edward's. There were several unmarked graves in Wiener Arkansas so it is possible he is buried there.

RE: Anderson Thacker

I found an Anderson,b. about 1817. Listed in 1870 Census. Living in Amherst, Virginia. I think he is my gggrandfather. My grandfather was Edward Elijah Thacker and his father was listed as Jeff Thacker. Anderson had a son, Jefferson L., which would fit the timeline for my grandfather,born,1883,. Mother Esther Bond Thacker. Any info on either Jeff or Esther would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Priscilla Duffield (b. 1837 to Simon & Mary Penn Duffield, Gloucester Cty NJ)

Priscilla Duffield was born in 1837 to Simon Duffield and Mary Penn, in Gloucester County, New Jersey. As far as I know, she was their only child.

The 1880 census has her mother living with a granddaughter, Mamie Simmerman [see 1880 US census, New Jersey, Gloucester County, Glassboro Township, microfilm series T9, film 781, supervisor's district 3, enumeration district 94, page 386A = 37 handwritten]. I have found Jacob and Priscilla Simmerman in the 1860 - 1880 censuses--in 1860 and 1870, with a daughter Mary (the right age to be Mamie), and in 1880 with a son Wilbur.

I therefore suspect that Priscilla Duffield married Jacob Simmerman and had at least those two children.

Can anyone confirm (or disconfirm) that guess? Can anyone supply any more information?

(My interest is primarily because of Mary Penn Duffield, daughter of my great x 3 grandparents Abraham and Catharine (Boqua) Penn. But I'm interested in all their descendents; contact me for more information.)

Thanks,

Harry
