Hi Beverley,

I am also looking for information on Harry Gillette Duke and Edna May Stanert, my connection is from the Stanert side. I am currently searching through the 1930 US Census images to try and locate them, searches have drawn a blank.

Edna May (Mae) Stanert's mother was Esther Maugham Stanert, she was born in Oldham, Lancashire, England in 1866. She came over to the USA with her father John Maugham and mother Hannah Kershaw Maugham in 1873.

John Maugham is an ancestor of mine. I look forward tio hearing from you.

Pete

Consider joining the Duke yDNA study at Family Tree DNA (ftDNA). The study already has some Maryland Duke family members who have been tested, as well as many many Virginia origin test subjects. You may not match them, but if so that in itself would be important information that would save you from many false leads.

I have been doing this for about a year now and have run four lines of my family all the way to Europe, England, France, Norway. I am now working on the Dukes surname which is on my mothers side. I have got my grandfather and great grandfather but it stops there. He said he was born in Ohio and his father in Maryland. If you have any suggestions I am open to them.

i have a great ancestor my GGGG Grandfather named James Dukes born 1832/33, he had a sister named Julia she was about 11 years younger and thier mother was also Julia born in ?? The father was Mathew C.Dukes 1805 in NC. Mathew and Jullia moved to GA. Had James and 7 other kids including Julia all were born in Ga. Later James and his brother Mathew M.Dukes went to Russle county AL. best I can tell Mathew married Mary/Mary Ann. Jullia could have followed her brothers to AL. I do not know the name of Mathew C. Dukes' parents (working on that now) but Mathew C. was born 1805 NC. I wonder if your Julia is my Julia that could be the sister. They all 3 men were in civil war. Mathew C. being 59 in 1864 joined up. Mathew M. was listed as killed in 1862 but turned up later. My (James)was killed at age 29 from combat wounds in 1861 in Chicago. Thankfully, his son Jhon (my GGG grandfather) was born in 1855 or I would not be here today.
Hope it Helps, would be neet if your Julia is my
GGGG Aunt .
Beth Dukes Mincey, FL

The Joseph Dukes who lived in the Cattle Creek area and whose dates are sometimes given as those you list died by about 1768, before the Revolution. I don't think anyone knows where he was buried, although it is surely in the Cattle Creek area. The Cattle Creek campground is reached by driving east on Cattle Creek Rd. from Hwy. 21 between Rowesville and Branchville. The cemetery you mention is probably either the Archie Dukes cemetery or the Thomas Edmund Dukes cemetery. Joseph's sons Thomas and George Alexander Dukes fought in the Revolution, but not with Gen. Francis Marion. For more information on this family see http://bellsouthpwp.net/t/e/teague_l/Index.htm.

Hello, I am the great grand daughter of frances mae Williamson who was a full blooded Cherokee indian and lived in alabama. She married another Indian but I don't have his info. I will contact my aunt who would know. They had a child who was my grandmother Lula mae who settled in livings ton Alabama. At some point, the son was taken off of the williamson. Rumor was it was done to distinguish and try to eliminate slavery associations. Lula married a black man and they had 12 children of which on was my mother.
