I too am descended from James McVinnie and Margaret Smith. Their daughter Agnes (James's older sister) was my great great grandmother. She moved down to Birmingham where she married William Douglas from Kirkcowan in Wigtownshire. Has anyone traced the McVinnie line further back? I can share a bit more information if you are interested.

I am descended from Martha McVinnie. She married another scottish man, who had "emigrated" down to Liverpool, his name is Walter Grieve. They lived in Liverpool, Walter was in the Liverpool Police. Did you know that Agnes had an elder daughter called Emily, born in the Union workhouse in 1900 and died aged 2. John Rylance was not the father listed on the birth cert - there wasnt one mentioned. It took some finding, I can say, as when Agnes married, she was registered as Mac Vinnie, rather that McVinnie. Interestingly when Emily died in 1902, after Agnes married John, she listed the name on the death cert as Emily McVinney Rylance. So maybe she was illiterate. Hope this isnt too shocking for you. Do you have any family stories about Agnes? Any photos etc? Martha McVinnie Grieve was a very kind person and as they were well off locally, made bread and gave food to her neighbours. But was very discrete, and would deliver food to the needy via the back alleys, so no one would see her. Obviously, all this changed after the police strike...
Hope to hear back from you.
Christine
I would love to hear about anything.

I had traced James' father James McVinnie born 1811 Borgue but did not know Margaret's surname. Which daughter are you related from?

Kevin

I know it is a long time since you posted your message, but I am a direct descendant of James McVinnie, who moved to Halstead Hall and consequently his parents, James b. 1811 Borgue and, I have, Margaret Smith b 1814 New Abbey. James married Martha Jump in Whiston and had 11 children, I am descended from one of his daughters.

Hi Marc,

Only just got around to looking at your email.

I believe my ancestor James McVinnie had an older brother Joseph McVinnie who born 1845 in Lochrutton, Kirkcudbrightshire, Dumfries, Scotland.
Could this be your Joseph? If so they had father James b.1811 Borgue and mother Margret b.1814 New Abbey (both Kirkcudbrightshire).

Joseph appears on the 1851 Census
1851
Name: McVINNIE , Joseph
Address: Barlea(875)
Parish: Lochrutton
Relationship: son of James McVinnie
Marital Status:
Occupation:
Age: 6
Born: born Lochrutton Kbt
Household No: 1/35

You are correct in thinking the name in quite uncommon around Lancs and across the UK as well.

My James moved from Scotland to Lancashire to work on the estate of the Willis Family at Halsnead Hall.

Hope this is useful? Give me a shout if you need anything else.

Cheers

Kev

Hi Kev, I'm also researching my McVinney roots. Seems like I had a Joshua McVinney (GG GF) born in Devon but moved to Leigh, Lancs presumably for the mines. His father was Joseph McVinney born in Scotland, but living in Devon when Joshua was born. The census records vary the name to either McVinney or McVenie so its tough tracking people down. i'm assuming that there aren't that many McV's in Lancs? Cheers, Marc

McCOURTIE, McCOURTY, McLACHLAN, McDONALD

I'm still searching for John McCourtie, born ca. 1746 probably in Kirkcudbrightshire; married December 23, 1773, probably in Dumfriesshire according to their family Bible. John died September 10, 1814 in Halfmoon Town (now Clifton Park Town), Saratoga County, New York and was buried in Clifton Park Center Baptist Church Cemetery, Clifton Park Town "in his 69th year". His wife was Jane McLachlan [spelled Jeannie McClawcline in the family Bible] . She was born ca. 1745/1746 in Scotland and died May 18, 1812 in Halfmoon Town (now Clifton Park Town), Saratoga County, New York "in her 67th year". The Bible was last seen in 1908 with a family in Schenectady, New York.

John and Jane McCourtie had three children: Peggy (born in Scotland in 1774); William (born 1776 in Scotland or New York State); and James (my ancestor, born 1777 in New York State).

John McCourtie's will mentions his "sister-in-law" Jane McDonald who also lived in New York State, but I have found no other information about her.

Richard Welch

In reviewing the post message dated May 21 2002, I realize that the John Mcknight and Catherine Grierson are my great great great grandparents. I have a document which is dated 1918 from a Scottish law firm which lists their children and their decendants as inheritors of the estate of their son Archibald and daughter Jane. Andrew and his decendants are among the recipients of the estate. Their son John was my great great grandfather. The family lived at South Glen farm as shown in the 1841 Buittle census. John's son Dougald was my great grandfather and Dougald's son William was my grandfather. My father is named Hugh Dougald Mcknight and he is 86 years old and lives in the greater Vancouver area. I would be interested if Linda Watson has any other information on the family.

Huguenot graves in Dumfries

Hello to all from the US!

I got a bit of a gem in my family research this morning regarding Huguenot (French Protestant) Graves in a cemetery in Dumfries. I do not know how many cemeteries there are in Dumfries.

My maiden surname is Junk. My grandfather claimed that the name of Junk is Scot-Irish and that it was once McJunkin, then McJunk, then Junk. Preposterious, I though, Junk is a German name.

Well, years later I started tracing my family roots and found that my immigrant ancestor did indeed come from County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, being born there in 1790 and that he was Presbyterian. Then I found a James Junk that was deported from Leath, Scotland in 1685, for being a Covenanter, and landed in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, USA.

How did the surname of Junk wind up in Scotland? It is a very uncommon name in Scotland, Ireland, and in the US. Then a Junk from Northern Ireland told me that his line can be traced to the French Huguenots.

The logical question then is how did French Huguenots wind up in Scotland in the 1600's and what is the tie between the Huguenots and the Presbyterians?

Over this past weekend I learned that Knox studied under Calvin in Switzerland in the 1500's. My understanding is, and correct me please if I am in error, that Knox is considered the founder of Presbyterianism in Scotland, and Calvin was the spearhead of the French Huguenot Protestant people during the Reformation in Europe.

Looking at the map of the Alsace and Lorraine area of France, I noticed many German names, and Geneva, Switzerland is very close by.

My query and humble request is: If any that subscribe to this mailing list and live in Dumfries, Scotland and have been to any of the cemeteries or cemetery, and have noticed any unusual names of Covenanters or Huguenots could you please jot down what you see and kindly email me?

Bless you!
Sincerely, Diane Junk Riley

kirk session records

I found the description by Sandy of Kirk Session Records very helpful.I am sure like many others new to family history and not researching from Scotland any help given is greatly appreciated.

When I started aprox 2 years ago I visited Irongray churchyard -and call it beginers luck - I discovered the headstone of my ggg grandfather James Mcknight ( wife Sarah Smith) I also took details of two other headstones near by - my gggg granfather Dougald Mcknight ( wife Mary
Milligan) and I believe his grandson Andrew Mcknight (wife Elizabeth Smith). I have recently obtained the death certificate for Andrew and as I hoped it states that his father was Andrew Mcknight , but it also states that he was illegitimate and his mother is given as Agnes Caven. I understand that this was the type of issue which would have been given attention and minuted in the records. -iis there anyway that I can find out if and for what periods such records may have been deposited at Edinburgh prior to a visit?

The book listing Monumental Inscriptions also shows that my other ggg granparents John Mcknight & Catherine Grierson also have a headstone at Irongray although I failed to see this on my visit. I would very much like to purchase the book by Moira Aitken as it sounds as though it may give further information on this part of my family. I didn't receive a list of publications with my last DGFHS newsletter and I have been unable to trace it on the website. Can you please confirm the title and weight in order that I may order it by post.

Thankyou
